:00:14. > :00:20.Good evening. This is BBC Newsline with Noel Thomspon and Donna

:00:20. > :00:25.Traynor. The headlines this Tuesday evening:

:00:25. > :00:29.New police Dexter's showing rioters using a hijacked burning car to

:00:29. > :00:32.attack officers in Ardoyne. -- police pictures.

:00:32. > :00:36.Five men arrested in connection with the murder of Constable Ronan

:00:36. > :00:39.Kerr. An inquest hears how are Northern

:00:39. > :00:43.Ireland Army officer was killed by an Afghan soldier.

:00:43. > :00:49.If you have to pay more for alcohol, will you drink less?

:00:50. > :00:54.Two new faces, one will hand back in the northern Ireland squad.

:00:54. > :01:00.And if you enjoyed sizzling in the sunshine today, why ice-cream will

:01:00. > :01:03.still be on the men - I on the menu later this week.

:01:03. > :01:08.The police say dozens of people could have been killed or injured

:01:08. > :01:13.by rioters to try to use a burning car to attack officers in Ardoyne.

:01:13. > :01:16.Helicopter video pictures released show the car careering out of

:01:16. > :01:21.control through a large crowd before smashing into the wall of a

:01:21. > :01:24.house. The police will use the video to help identify Republican

:01:24. > :01:30.troublemakers, but they have rejected Sinn Fein claims they are

:01:30. > :01:35.taking a softly-softly approach in pursuing Lillis writers -- rioters.

:01:35. > :01:39.The moment rioters in the Ardoyne area had to run a car into at a

:01:39. > :01:44.rolling far ball. They tried to push it towards police lines. Some

:01:44. > :01:49.of those involved were children. But it quickly rolled out of

:01:49. > :01:54.control and crashed into the wall up a house. Undeterred, the rioters

:01:54. > :02:01.tried again. The police appealed for public help in catching those

:02:01. > :02:07.responsible and issued this morning. It could have exploded, there are

:02:07. > :02:10.at least 100 people. Decca could have gone up, the petrol tank

:02:10. > :02:15.exploded, anyone nearby could have been injured or killed by the

:02:15. > :02:25.recklessness of the people involved. 22 people have now been arrested

:02:25. > :02:29.and 17 charge. -- charged. 21 people have been arrested and 16 of

:02:29. > :02:33.them charged in connection with rioting orchestrated by the UVF in

:02:33. > :02:40.East Belfast last month. But there has not been a single arrest

:02:40. > :02:43.following serious rioting in Bali Clare, Newtownabbey and

:02:43. > :02:47.Carrickfergus on July 9th in which six police officers were injured.

:02:47. > :02:54.Loyalists blame the police for provoking the violence by removing

:02:54. > :03:00.flags, including the Union flag in Bali Clare. The police rejected

:03:00. > :03:04.acclaim. But the apologised for the way Mr fights were removed. They

:03:04. > :03:10.have been accused of double standards. The evidence shows that

:03:10. > :03:18.the PSNI are being proactive in arresting people and I am not

:03:18. > :03:22.arguing against people who are doing that, but they are taking an

:03:22. > :03:27.hands-off approach when it comes to the loyalist areas.

:03:27. > :03:31.investigation into the disturbances in East Belfast, they have already

:03:31. > :03:36.been 20 arrests, which is a similar level to the arrests I have carried

:03:36. > :03:41.out. Jimmy, it shows that there is an equal handed approach been taken.

:03:41. > :03:44.-- to me. The police may police photographs of individuals involved

:03:44. > :03:51.in writing in Ardoyne and East Belfast and ask the public to help

:03:51. > :03:55.identify them. They cannot be identified by other means.

:03:55. > :03:58.Five men have been arrested in a major security operation in

:03:58. > :04:04.connection with the murder of Constable Ronan Kerr in April.

:04:04. > :04:09.Police officers have been involved in searches in Toome, Bellaghy,

:04:09. > :04:14.Ballyronan and Coalisland. Louise Cullen is in Coalisland.

:04:14. > :04:17.These arrests are part of an operation which began early this

:04:17. > :04:24.morning and the search is still continuing. Seven searches in four

:04:24. > :04:27.areas across the counties following the five arrests. The police say

:04:27. > :04:31.evidence in the investigation is progressing. Around 200 officers

:04:31. > :04:39.are involved in this major search operation, stretching across three

:04:39. > :04:43.counties. In Toome, two men were arrested aged 27 and 46. At least

:04:43. > :04:48.three sedges are being carried out in Toome amid heavy police presence.

:04:48. > :04:53.One at a business on Hill Head Road, and another at houses in the town.

:04:53. > :04:57.In County Tyrone, forensic officers also remove items from a house in

:04:57. > :05:01.Coalisland, as well as a car. A 22- year-old man was arrested here.

:05:01. > :05:07.House was also searched in Ballyronan after 33-year-old man

:05:07. > :05:13.was arrested. In County Londonderry, in a lucky, another man was held.

:05:13. > :05:18.All five have been taking to Antrim police station. -- in Bellaghy.

:05:18. > :05:22.Ronan Kerr died when a bomb exploded under his car in April.

:05:22. > :05:25.Today's operations brings to 40 the number of searches in relation to

:05:25. > :05:30.this investigation. Four people have been arrested and one man

:05:30. > :05:34.charged. For possession guns, exposes and incendiaries. The

:05:35. > :05:38.police say today's activities are the latest stage in the ongoing

:05:39. > :05:48.murder investigation. They offend the public for their support and

:05:48. > :05:52.assistance -- they thank the public. In the matter of Ronan Kerr, a

:05:52. > :05:55.50,000 reward was offered for information leading to the rest at

:05:55. > :06:02.or condition of those involved in the killing. The police said today

:06:02. > :06:05.that rewards still stand. The family of a County Armagh

:06:05. > :06:10.soldier have been hearing details of how he was killed by a rogue

:06:10. > :06:18.Afghan soldier. That in an Neal Turkington was killed alongside two

:06:18. > :06:21.colleagues in Helmand last year. -- lieutenant Neal Turkington.

:06:21. > :06:30.Lieutenant Neal Turkington's father was a man those at the inquest

:06:30. > :06:34.today along with the parents of Major James Bowman. They were

:06:34. > :06:37.serving with the first Battalion Royal Gurkha Rifles, soldiers known

:06:37. > :06:41.for their toughness and loyalty. Like these British troops in

:06:41. > :06:44.Helmand, they had been patrolling and fighting alongside soldiers of

:06:44. > :06:50.the Afghan National Army when they were betrayed and murdered by a man

:06:50. > :06:55.they thought was an ally. The dead men were operating from a compound

:06:55. > :07:00.near Lashkar Gah. In the small hours of the morning, a rogue

:07:00. > :07:07.Afghan soldier shot major Bowman, wounded several others, then fired

:07:07. > :07:11.a rocket-propelled grenade into the operations centre. The man then

:07:12. > :07:16.fled in the darkness and confusion. James Bowman was 34 and had been in

:07:16. > :07:21.Afghanistan for three months. Neil care - I Neal Turkington was 26 and

:07:21. > :07:26.he was admired for his professionalism. He had also taught

:07:26. > :07:31.himself to speak the local language in an Irish accent. The other

:07:31. > :07:36.soldier had been in Afghanistan barely one month. The inquest heard

:07:36. > :07:40.from their commanding officer, who acknowledged there was a risk in

:07:40. > :07:46.partnering so closely with the Afghan national army, but to treat

:07:46. > :07:50.them as a potentially hostile would have caused resentment. He was that

:07:50. > :07:54.I Neal Turkington's family why lessons had not been learned from

:07:54. > :08:00.the Tessem 2009 of five British soldiers, gunned down by an Afghan

:08:00. > :08:03.policeman. The police and the army were very different organisations,

:08:03. > :08:09.he said. The Afghan army was much more professional and accountable

:08:09. > :08:13.than the police. The men's assailant is still a wanted man,

:08:13. > :08:17.and who has since claimed to have joined the Taliban.

:08:17. > :08:22.You're watching BBC Newsline, still to come on the programme: What

:08:22. > :08:27.medicine do our firms need to climb out of the recession?

:08:27. > :08:33.And going for gold, the latest in our series on a in the 20 told

:08:33. > :08:37.medal contenders. -- Olympic 2012 medal contenders.

:08:37. > :08:41.A brother of Gerry Adams has begun a legal challenge in the Republic

:08:41. > :08:47.against extradition to Northern Ireland. Liam Adams is facing

:08:47. > :08:53.charges of sexually abusing his daughter. Jennifer O'Leary was in

:08:53. > :08:58.court. What is the basis of Mr Adams a' case against extradition?

:08:58. > :09:02.Domain crux of his argument is, if he is extradited, he would not get

:09:02. > :09:07.a fair trial because of the media coverage he has been subjected to,

:09:07. > :09:17.and that unfairness has come punt - - is compounded by changes to the

:09:17. > :09:18.

:09:18. > :09:21.jury selection in Northern Ireland. There is specific reference made to

:09:21. > :09:27.a television documentary? That is right, a documentary that

:09:27. > :09:32.was broadcast in December 2009, it was around the time that Liam Adams

:09:32. > :09:36.had not turned up to a preliminary hearing him a Belfast court about

:09:36. > :09:42.the abuse allegations. The programme was broadcast, but his

:09:42. > :09:51.brother Gerry Adams was interviewed for the programme Antti stated, I

:09:51. > :09:56.believe. The M Adams's councillor said, people in the jury have high

:09:56. > :10:02.regard for Gerry Adams butter are likely to forget his own brother

:10:02. > :10:05.has announced he is guilty. They may think, what hope is there for

:10:05. > :10:09.impartiality? How long do we think this will

:10:09. > :10:14.last? In December 2009, Gerry Adams also

:10:14. > :10:22.released a statement which included, since the first day I spoke to her

:10:22. > :10:28.about the abuse, I believe her, she must get justice. The councillor

:10:28. > :10:31.for a Liam Adams spoke today. He said, let us be realistic, Gerry

:10:31. > :10:38.Adams has an excellent understanding of the media. He

:10:38. > :10:42.knows the law and he must have no he was driving a coach to the

:10:42. > :10:46.principle of a fair trial. He surmised that he was perhaps, there

:10:46. > :10:51.was perhaps the competing interests. The extradition hearing will

:10:51. > :10:56.continue on Thursday. The recession the officially be

:10:56. > :11:02.over, but the UK economy is still fragile. According to new figures,

:11:02. > :11:07.the growth was just 0.2% between April and June. Jim Fitzpatrick has

:11:07. > :11:12.been looking at what has been happening locally. Those figures,

:11:12. > :11:17.GDP, remind us what GDP is all about.

:11:17. > :11:21.GDP is the magic economic figure, it reduces everything to one

:11:21. > :11:27.statistic, and the GDP is above zero them it means we are growing.

:11:27. > :11:32.It covers everything from haircuts to highway construction. 0.2%, a UK

:11:32. > :11:36.economy is growing but only just. Still lagging behind Germany and

:11:36. > :11:41.the US. Northern Ireland is lagging behind the UK. We do not have

:11:41. > :11:46.regional GDP figures, but we do have other figures. Unethical --

:11:46. > :11:52.unofficial figures suggest Northern Ireland's economy will only grow by

:11:52. > :11:56.0.5% this year. Compared to a UK average expected of 1 by 3%.

:11:56. > :12:00.Why is our economy because? Northern Ireland is connected to

:12:00. > :12:04.the Republic's economy and we know things have not been good there.

:12:04. > :12:08.And they are highly reliant on the public sector, we have seen changes

:12:08. > :12:13.there as well. We have had a property crash, fewer consumers

:12:13. > :12:18.coming and spending their money from the South, and a relation to

:12:18. > :12:22.the public sector, that is stagnant and falling. -- our reliance on the

:12:22. > :12:27.public sector. People have less money to spend so less people are

:12:27. > :12:31.shopping from the South, and people in the North have less money. It is

:12:31. > :12:35.a tale of two sectors, on the one hand we have the service sector

:12:35. > :12:39.which is doing badly because there is little money, then they have a

:12:39. > :12:43.manufacturing sector which is doing quite well because people here are

:12:43. > :12:47.not shopping, but people elsewhere are buying some of our goods.

:12:47. > :12:51.Talking about companies like Almac, pages there that we can see, that

:12:51. > :12:54.company is doing rather well. Let us break that down.

:12:54. > :12:58.Let us go through those local figures.

:12:58. > :13:05.Manufacturing to start with. It has seen growth over three-quarters in

:13:05. > :13:09.a row. 7.5% in the year compared to the UK average of 2.7%. That is

:13:09. > :13:12.partly due to a boom in food prices but we are also seen decent

:13:12. > :13:17.recovery in our engineering companies, like Bombardier and

:13:17. > :13:24.Wrightbus. The service sector that -- sector is a different picture,

:13:24. > :13:30.it has been down the four quarters in a row. It has shrunk 5.5% over

:13:30. > :13:34.the year compared to the UK, one point for%. What these figures tell

:13:34. > :13:38.us is that people talk about the balance in the Northern Ireland

:13:38. > :13:41.economy, that sums it up. We need to rebalance away from those

:13:41. > :13:45.sectors which are falling back, less reliant on the public sector

:13:45. > :13:55.and try to get some more of those companies that can go and can give

:13:55. > :14:00.

:14:00. > :14:06.A 14 people were killed during the most recent 12 month period. The

:14:06. > :14:13.latest statistics have emerged after a man became critically ill

:14:13. > :14:18.after an injury at the JTI cigarette plant.

:14:18. > :14:23.This is one of Northern Ireland's biggest employers, owned by and

:14:23. > :14:29.Japanese company. The accident happened during maintenance work.

:14:29. > :14:34.It was being carried out on a robotic arm. Machinery is

:14:34. > :14:37.understood to have fallen on the workers. He was taken to a nearby

:14:38. > :14:41.hospital and then transferred to the Ulster Hospital.

:14:41. > :14:48.This happened after another industrial accident in which a

:14:48. > :14:52.worker died. It was at this recycling yard where he was trapped

:14:52. > :14:58.behind a lorry. The number of health and safety related deaths is

:14:58. > :15:05.on the vice. Two years ago, six people died. In the past year, this

:15:05. > :15:12.has more than doubled. Four months into the latest cycle, seven people

:15:12. > :15:18.have died already. Even when workers survive, their injuries can

:15:18. > :15:24.be a life-changing. Earlier this month, the factory was fined

:15:24. > :15:28.25,000. It was found guilty of breaking health and safety what --

:15:28. > :15:36.health and safety laws. They were curvier suffered permanent brain

:15:36. > :15:46.damage. The Health and Safety Executive

:15:46. > :15:50.want to know what happened and why? We are used to be price of alcohol

:15:50. > :15:54.going up on the Budget but across the board increases are on the

:15:54. > :15:59.cards if the executive said same minimum price. Ministers think it

:15:59. > :16:05.will help tackle excessive drinking and are hoping to put proposals to

:16:05. > :16:09.the Assembly after the summer holiday.

:16:09. > :16:13.Doctors, police and politicians say that Northern Ireland has a

:16:13. > :16:23.drinking problem. It is costing hundreds of millions of pounds

:16:23. > :16:23.

:16:23. > :16:30.every year. The price of a drink is too low, they say. The executive

:16:30. > :16:33.wants to raise the minimum cost of alcohol.

:16:33. > :16:38.The Chief Medical Officer is clear that this will save lives and will

:16:38. > :16:44.reduce the cost to the health system so on both counts, these are

:16:44. > :16:49.things I support. How to play can you buy alcohol? I

:16:49. > :16:55.have been to a supermarket and I managed to buy two bottles of cider

:16:55. > :17:01.and two bottles of white wine for 10. If the executive introduced a

:17:01. > :17:10.minimum price of 45p per unit of alcohol, this would topos may twice

:17:11. > :17:15.as much, 20. -- this would cost me twice as much.

:17:15. > :17:20.We understand the need to tackle alcohol abuse but we do not think

:17:21. > :17:25.minimum pricing is the right approach. This is a cultural issue.

:17:25. > :17:30.It is not based on the cost of alcohol and why should be

:17:30. > :17:34.responsible majority pay the price for the actions of a few?

:17:34. > :17:37.Our orders are for the plans and they denied they would gain at the

:17:37. > :17:42.expense of supermarkets. Whatever level of minimum price

:17:42. > :17:51.that is applied, the cost in the pub is so high that the prices

:17:51. > :17:54.would be no where near. We might see less people in the pub. It is

:17:54. > :18:01.about the moral lead -- moral responsibility to sell alcohol in a

:18:01. > :18:04.responsible way. The debate will go on as the

:18:04. > :18:12.executive makes its decision. A public consultation has just

:18:12. > :18:17.finished. Northern Ireland's football manager

:18:17. > :18:27.Nigel Worthington has announced the 23 man squad for next month's Euro

:18:27. > :18:32.

:18:32. > :18:37.20 twilit qualifier. -- 2012. This man has been overlooked for

:18:37. > :18:44.the past two internationals. His return comes as no great surprise

:18:44. > :18:54.though after an injury. All smiles for Nigel Worthington as

:18:54. > :18:56.

:18:56. > :19:03.he announced a squat task to with keeping the Euro campaign alive. --

:19:03. > :19:10.a squad tasked with. David will be in the Scot but like

:19:10. > :19:15.everyone else, he will be watched when we meet up and start training.

:19:15. > :19:18.James Maclean has been in good form and he is called into the squad for

:19:19. > :19:24.the first time. I have worked with James in the

:19:24. > :19:30.Milk Cup a couple of years ago. He has matured a little. He has been

:19:30. > :19:37.doing very well. Will he be involved in that the game? Probably

:19:37. > :19:47.not but it does give us the chance to look closely at him in training.

:19:47. > :19:49.

:19:49. > :19:59.Northern Ireland are hoping to go one better than the 1-1 draw last

:19:59. > :20:05.

:20:05. > :20:10.time. We move to the Milk Cup now.

:20:10. > :20:15.It is not often you see Stephen Carr son sitting on the bench. This

:20:15. > :20:20.week, the Irish League starts swapped the pleasure of playing for

:20:20. > :20:24.the pressure of management. It is nice and warm. Pass the ball

:20:24. > :20:30.and enjoy its... This is a different experience. I

:20:30. > :20:34.tried to pass on some knowledge to the kids. It is a good challenge,

:20:34. > :20:44.and hopefully in the future I will have learned a lot from my

:20:44. > :20:48.

:20:48. > :20:54.experiences of the Milk Cup. There is a wealth of talent playing

:20:54. > :21:00.in this tournament. He washed his young team lose 2-12

:21:00. > :21:06.Ipswich Town but they did grab a late consolation goal. It was

:21:06. > :21:12.another English side who frustrated County Armagh as they conceded a

:21:12. > :21:22.last-minute equaliser from Plymouth Argyle. The boys from County

:21:22. > :21:24.

:21:24. > :21:31.Fermanagh had to deal with the boys with the South American flair. But

:21:31. > :21:39.the Mexican side grabbed a late winner. These games will stand them

:21:39. > :21:44.in good stead for the future and that is what the Milk Cup is about.

:21:44. > :21:49.The London Olympics now. They are one year our way tomorrow. We will

:21:49. > :21:58.be looking at the best local hopes for gold medals next summer.

:21:58. > :22:05.Tonight we look at the remarkable trio of drawers from Coltrane. --

:22:05. > :22:09.rowers from Coleraine. This man's training regime is

:22:09. > :22:18.unconventional. He is one of the most committed athletes in the

:22:18. > :22:23.sport. All too often, he has missed out when it really matters.

:22:23. > :22:29.Can he is psychologically with 50 metres to go hold of this world

:22:29. > :22:35.class field? And he slips back into fourth place. An epic loss.

:22:35. > :22:42.He is now in his late 20s, at his peak and fully focused on London,

:22:42. > :22:49.his third Olympic Games. It is on the horizon, and when I

:22:49. > :22:52.think back to Beijing, it really was not that long ago. Everything

:22:52. > :22:57.we are doing is in preparation towards that and I would give up

:22:57. > :23:01.any number of World Cup wins and this year's World Tour

:23:01. > :23:07.Championships just to get on to the start line at London because it

:23:07. > :23:11.really is for us, the absolute pinnacle. Nothing else comes close.

:23:11. > :23:19.Everything will be to make sure I am the quickest I can become

:23:19. > :23:27.obsessed next year. That is my first thought when I wake up and

:23:27. > :23:32.last when I go to slip. That and My beautiful fiancee!
