:00:18. > :00:22.Good evening. This is BBC Newsline with Noel Thompson and Donna

:00:22. > :00:24.Traynor. The headlines this Tuesday evening. Storm force winds bring

:00:24. > :00:29.destruction, travel disruption and power cuts to tens of thousands of

:00:29. > :00:33.people. Today's storms will continue to ease this evening but a

:00:34. > :00:38.fresh batch of strong winds will develop tomorrow again. For parts

:00:38. > :00:40.of the west, heavy rain will bring a risk of flooding. Could an

:00:40. > :00:46.American college archive yield vital evidence relating to the

:00:46. > :00:49.murder 40 years ago of Jean McConville? The search intensifies

:00:49. > :00:52.for a County Antrim man who's been missing since Sunday after going

:00:52. > :01:01.out for a cycle ride. And how hundreds of battery hens have been

:01:01. > :01:08.given new life at a rescue centre in County Down. It is lovely to be

:01:08. > :01:13.able to do something to help them. Power cuts, damage to homes, fallen

:01:13. > :01:17.trees. We certainly bore the full brunt of last night's powerful

:01:17. > :01:20.winds with many reports of narrow escapes from falling debris. The

:01:20. > :01:25.winds were storm force in places. At Malin Head, Ireland's most

:01:25. > :01:27.northerly point, the winds briefly whipped up to hurricane level. Tens

:01:27. > :01:33.of thousands of homes and businesses were without electricity

:01:33. > :01:36.and this evening about 8,000 are still cut off. Our cameras have

:01:36. > :01:43.recorded the aftermath from Crom to Crossgar. But it's the North West

:01:43. > :01:47.first, and Keiron Tourish in Londonderry. An indication of the

:01:47. > :01:51.strength of the winds sweeping the north-west this morning. This tree

:01:51. > :01:56.was uprated and landed close to these homes at Broom Hill Avenue in

:01:56. > :02:01.the Waterside. One elderly couple say they were terrified. It is the

:02:01. > :02:07.second time actually has come down close to their home in nine months.

:02:07. > :02:14.Some of the branches hit the window so we were very lucky that the

:02:14. > :02:19.window did not go in with half of the house away with it. We were

:02:19. > :02:28.very fortunate. Although it's bad enough. It is something we have

:02:28. > :02:32.been dreading for some time. I and 88 years old and my wife is 72. We

:02:32. > :02:37.are pretty well on. We could do without this sort of trouble, very

:02:37. > :02:43.much so. Next door, Mark Hamilton fears that his car has been written

:02:43. > :02:51.off. He has concerns for the safety of his daughters, aged five, 13 and

:02:51. > :02:57.16, but they were unhurt. It was very close. You cannot complain.

:02:57. > :03:02.It's just after Christmas. OK... Body were about is the car. It

:03:02. > :03:08.could be worse. Residents say they have warned of the obvious dangers

:03:08. > :03:12.of the past and they want urgent action. Elsewhere in the City, part

:03:12. > :03:16.of Bishop Street was closed after slates and debris blew off the roof

:03:16. > :03:26.of the Masonic Hall and across the street, the local court sittings

:03:26. > :03:26.

:03:26. > :03:32.continued. In the Brandywell, a metal fence came down due to the

:03:32. > :03:36.force of the wind. The police said that they had been inundated with

:03:36. > :03:40.calls about fallen trees causing disruption across the north-west.

:03:40. > :03:45.Meanwhile, in I E engineers had to cut supplies to 2000 customers

:03:45. > :03:51.outside Derry to repair a major fault. Homes and businesses in

:03:51. > :04:01.Campsie, Carnmoney, Eglinton and at the Industrial Estate lost their

:04:01. > :04:01.

:04:01. > :04:06.power was the fault was repaired. The driver of this car escaped with

:04:06. > :04:10.hand injuries. When you consider the damage to the car, he is

:04:10. > :04:13.fortunate to be alive. The man who works for the Road Service is

:04:13. > :04:18.understood to have been on his way to the scene of another fallen tree

:04:18. > :04:23.when his car was set. Other modes of transport also find the high

:04:23. > :04:29.wind too much to handle. The storms which it Fermanagh this morning

:04:29. > :04:35.ripped off part of the riff from this store in Enniskillen.

:04:35. > :04:40.happened at around 6am, just really strong wind which blows incapacity

:04:40. > :04:45.across and hits this side of the Stalker and that caused severe

:04:45. > :04:49.damage and dislodged some of the rift. We hope to have it fully

:04:49. > :04:55.operational in the morning. Fallen trees blocked roads and brought

:04:55. > :04:59.down power and communication lines as well. 10,000 customers were

:04:59. > :05:04.without electricity, with the worst-hit areas being East Antrim,

:05:04. > :05:08.Ballymena, Ballymoney, Coleraine and Bangor. Everything was

:05:08. > :05:15.escalated this morning, the local centres, all 12 of them, and here

:05:15. > :05:19.in Craigavon, ready for the storm. Currently, we have 8500 customers

:05:19. > :05:24.without supply. Whilst the Met Office says the worst storms

:05:24. > :05:27.happened while you were asleep, in exposed areas, like here in the

:05:27. > :05:32.Craigantlet Hills, you can still feel the full force of the wind

:05:32. > :05:40.buffeting against you. Which is good news if you happen to be the

:05:40. > :05:45.owner of a wind turbine first stop this burkha. Most Sea ferry

:05:45. > :05:49.services have been operating on time but Stella has advised

:05:49. > :05:54.passengers to contact their telephone line before travelling.

:05:54. > :05:58.There was slight disruption to some fights today but not a lot. With

:05:58. > :06:05.some deciding just to sit it out. On the windswept city centre

:06:05. > :06:07.streets it was a struggle to keep things from taking off. Even for

:06:07. > :06:11.the long arm of the lough. The storms have bought the New Year in

:06:11. > :06:19.with a vengeance, blowing away any lingering remnants of the Christmas

:06:19. > :06:24.holiday period. All along the north coast there were spectacular sights

:06:24. > :06:27.as the high winds whipped up the surf. But a few miles inland, some

:06:27. > :06:35.houses were damaged by the storm. Chris Page spent the day in the

:06:35. > :06:42.area. His report begins in Portrush. Looking and sounding all Sun. The

:06:42. > :06:47.wind and the sea buffeted the north coast been fears fashion. The wind

:06:48. > :06:51.isn't as strong as it has been but it is still absolutely ferocious.

:06:51. > :06:55.It is a very special site, this stretch of coastline looks even

:06:55. > :07:00.more spectacular than usual, with the waves crashing against the

:07:00. > :07:08.class. Not many people are venturing outside to see this, most

:07:08. > :07:13.are heeding advice to stay indoors. A down the road in Coleraine, this

:07:13. > :07:18.site was not so pretty. At this farm, tiles came off the roof, the

:07:18. > :07:24.car was damaged and the wind ripped the satellite dish off. The family

:07:24. > :07:28.heard the storm starting early this morning and did not get much sleep.

:07:28. > :07:32.I was very worried, I thought you were going to lose some of the roof

:07:32. > :07:39.and it was swirling around, it was hard to know what direction it was

:07:39. > :07:44.coming from. Why time did you come out? We heard the banging whenever

:07:44. > :07:49.the masonry hit the car at about 6am. I was only glad I was not

:07:49. > :07:55.going to work at that time! She is thankful nobody was hurt by the

:07:55. > :08:00.flying debris. Despite the spectacle on the clifftops, people

:08:00. > :08:03.are relieved that the worst of the weather has passed. The high winds

:08:03. > :08:07.meant plans to transfer 54,000 tons of oil from a damaged oil tanker to

:08:07. > :08:09.another ship at the mouth of Belfast Lough were further delayed.

:08:09. > :08:16.The Genmar Companion has been anchored off the Copeland Islands

:08:16. > :08:19.since a crack developed in its upper deck on the 16th of December.

:08:19. > :08:23.Transfer of the cargo has been delayed from Saturday due to bad

:08:23. > :08:30.weather. The ship will enter Belfast Harbour for repairs as soon

:08:30. > :08:39.as the oil is taken off the vessel. Here's Cecilia Daly with a weather

:08:40. > :08:46.It was all about the wind earlier and a lot of people travelling back

:08:46. > :08:50.to work for the first time. It peaked at 7:00am this morning so

:08:50. > :08:57.what damage occurred was on the roads for people travelling. These

:08:57. > :09:01.are the peak winds, 105 mph at Malin Head. As we heard earlier, we

:09:01. > :09:06.had sustained winds for 10 minutes reaching hurricane force and these

:09:06. > :09:12.when's have now eased away and things are improving. You have been

:09:12. > :09:18.sending in pictures. This is Ballintoy. Absolutely fantastic

:09:18. > :09:23.picture. And many trees came down and this is one of them. Things

:09:23. > :09:32.looking quieter but I will have more on tomorrow later on. Still to

:09:32. > :09:37.come... May get you! Annually for battery hens rescued by a group of

:09:37. > :09:47.women in Moira. And the two men who plan to smash the speedboat record

:09:47. > :09:48.

:09:48. > :09:54.The police are investigating the death of a man whose body was found

:09:54. > :09:57.in a van on the Shore Road in Belfast. The police cordoned off a

:09:57. > :10:00.section of the road near the Gray's Lane junction this morning while a

:10:00. > :10:03.forensic team examined the scene. Local people claim the man's body

:10:03. > :10:05.was sitting in the van for several days before they realised he was

:10:06. > :10:08.dead. His name hasn't been released. US officials have received

:10:08. > :10:12.transcripts of interviews the former IRA member Dolours Price

:10:12. > :10:16.gave to an oral history project at Boston College. The move follows

:10:16. > :10:19.legal action in the United States on behalf of the PSNI. It's

:10:19. > :10:22.understood they want the material in relation to their investigation

:10:22. > :10:24.into the IRA abduction and murder of the Belfast mother-of-ten Jean

:10:24. > :10:26.McConville in 1972. Researchers on the project insist they won't

:10:26. > :10:32.cooperate with any police investigation, based on the

:10:33. > :10:42.interviews, which were given under a guarantee of anonymity. Here's

:10:43. > :10:43.

:10:43. > :10:48.Mark Devenport. Many paramilitaries have taken their secrets to their

:10:48. > :10:51.graves. But Boston College researchers persuaded some to tell

:10:51. > :10:57.all their promising their stories would only be released after their

:10:57. > :11:03.deaths. IRA man Brendan Hughes, seen carrying a coffin, died four

:11:03. > :11:07.years ago. Two years later, his account was broadcast on RTE E. It

:11:07. > :11:12.included sensational claims about the murder of the Belfast mother of

:11:12. > :11:15.him, Jean McConville. He claimed that Gerry Adams ordered the

:11:15. > :11:21.abduction, something the President of Sinn Fein denies. The special

:11:21. > :11:26.squad was brought in. Anybody who needed to be taken away, they did

:11:26. > :11:32.it. I had no control over the squad. Gerry had control over this

:11:32. > :11:35.particular squad. Last year, the PSNI triggered Liggett action in

:11:35. > :11:39.Postern, seeking the tapes. There were not just after the tapes of

:11:39. > :11:44.Brendan Hughes but also interviews recorded by another for I remember,

:11:44. > :11:47.Dolours Price. The researchers behind the project insist they will

:11:47. > :11:53.not help any future investigation based on their confidential

:11:53. > :12:00.recordings. We are determined to fight this all the way. If whoever

:12:00. > :12:05.has initiated this action, if they persist in any attempt to bring

:12:05. > :12:12.criminal charges, let me tell them, they can expect no co-operation

:12:12. > :12:19.from me or the interviewers. Loyalists All Star contributed and

:12:19. > :12:24.one is now asking Boston College for his interview back. This has

:12:24. > :12:31.widespread ramifications for the peace process. Storytelling by ex-

:12:31. > :12:39.prisoners and combat pants. -- combatants. This was a piece

:12:40. > :12:43.building exercise. People will refuse to operate. But ever happens

:12:44. > :12:48.to the tapes, the story shows once again that Northern Ireland's

:12:48. > :12:53.troubled past has plenty of potential to stir controversy when

:12:53. > :12:55.-- well into the future. The police are extremely concerned for a

:12:56. > :12:58.County Antrim cyclist who has been missing since Sunday. 49-year-old

:12:58. > :13:01.father-of-three Samuel Cambell hasn't been seen by his family

:13:01. > :13:05.since he left his home on the Kilgad Road in Kells for a bike

:13:05. > :13:15.ride. Now a major search is underway, taking in much of the

:13:15. > :13:16.

:13:16. > :13:21.countryside around Ballymena. This is Samuel Campbell. He is a

:13:21. > :13:26.keen cyclist and this picture taken from CCTV shows what he was wearing

:13:26. > :13:30.when he left home on Sunday afternoon. The police say it is

:13:31. > :13:35.unusual that he hasn't contacted his family. Detectives are scouring

:13:35. > :13:41.a huge area for signs of Mr Campbell who would have cycled

:13:41. > :13:47.between 20 and 30 miles in one go. Their search of country fields is

:13:47. > :13:52.taking in many places. Based no clue as to what has happened.

:13:52. > :13:57.For the potential is that he has come off his bicycle or taken ill.

:13:57. > :14:02.We need more information from the public. We would ask that

:14:02. > :14:06.landowners could check buildings on the ALF -- of chance that he has

:14:06. > :14:13.taken nearly one of those properties. This is one of the

:14:13. > :14:17.roads that he cycles in and there are many like this. That is why the

:14:17. > :14:23.police need the public's help. They want anyone who might have seen or

:14:23. > :14:27.heard from Mr Campbell to get in touch.

:14:27. > :14:32.A former its core principle is denying 15 charges of fraud

:14:32. > :14:40.relating to financial issues at his County Down primary school. Stanley

:14:40. > :14:42.Poots is a former president of one of the main teachers' unions and

:14:42. > :14:50.retired from primary school last year. It is understood the charges

:14:50. > :14:55.relate to alleged fraud over five years amounted to 73,000. He says

:14:55. > :15:00.he will contest the charges. The former principal was awarded an MBE

:15:00. > :15:05.last year to his services for education.

:15:05. > :15:13.Do you know what the initials TD stand for after a member of the

:15:13. > :15:21.Irish parliament? The Irish isTeachta Dala, member of the dale.

:15:21. > :15:29.It also means dishevelled. If the cut and thrust of politics

:15:29. > :15:34.in the aftermath of the December Budget. And the man whose job it is

:15:34. > :15:38.to regulate proceedings is the Speaker of the house. You either

:15:38. > :15:45.respect the chair or you don't. In future, if you don't, you will take

:15:45. > :15:49.a walk no matter who you are. I am serious about it. Sean Barrett is

:15:49. > :15:55.determined to bring shouting and roaring under control. He wants

:15:55. > :16:01.deputies to mind their language and to abide by a stricter dress code

:16:01. > :16:10.with proposals banning denim and saying that men should wear a shirt

:16:11. > :16:18.with a collar. Also on the new year wish list is

:16:18. > :16:26.the updated list of words deemed unparliamentary after a controversy

:16:26. > :16:33.on a word that I cannot say about septic tanks. Smart and a pure

:16:33. > :16:43.language and your appearance, the clear message in 2012. -- smarten

:16:43. > :16:48.

:16:48. > :16:52.Hundreds of battery hens have been given up a new lease of life and

:16:52. > :16:57.released from their cages where they were cooped up for more than a

:16:57. > :17:03.year. The hens were rescued from -- by a

:17:03. > :17:09.woman called Moira and given a new lease of life.

:17:09. > :17:15.Are you singing to me? Just a few hours ago, these hens were howls --

:17:15. > :17:21.housed in battery cages and part of an intensive egg producing industry.

:17:21. > :17:27.Now thanks to a group of volunteers, they are beginning a new life.

:17:27. > :17:34.at you, your personality is shining through. Her one by one, all of the

:17:34. > :17:39.300 hens get a health examination. They arrive from the farm in these

:17:39. > :17:43.crates but the hands and he are the lucky ones. Out of a flock of

:17:43. > :17:53.20,000 birds, the rescue centre volunteers can only find homes for

:17:53. > :17:55.

:17:55. > :18:02.a few hundred. Look at that. Myself and my husband are going to get

:18:02. > :18:06.another one today. It is good to help. For now, these luxurious nest

:18:06. > :18:12.boxes must seem strange but their plumage should recover and by

:18:12. > :18:18.Easter, many will lay eggs again for their new owners. I will take

:18:18. > :18:25.for because I have already got six. The woman behind the hen reserve

:18:25. > :18:29.says from small beginnings, the aim is to expand. Our slogan is, saving

:18:29. > :18:35.one hen may not change the world but it will change the world for

:18:35. > :18:38.that one hen. After what must have been a confusing day, the hands of

:18:38. > :18:44.settling-in for their first night sleeping on a bed of straw.

:18:44. > :18:50.Tomorrow, they will take their first steps outside. Already, their

:18:50. > :18:56.horizons are opening up. Northern Ireland's new football

:18:56. > :18:59.manager will be officially unveiled tomorrow.

:18:59. > :19:06.If Michael O'Neill will be introduced as the new manager of

:19:06. > :19:10.Northern Ireland football tomorrow. We will be live to bring his first

:19:10. > :19:18.interview in the job which he starts officially next month. One

:19:18. > :19:24.of the men he pipped to the post, Jim Magilton is picked to be the

:19:24. > :19:26.manager of Preston North End. He had hoped to attract him to the

:19:26. > :19:32.brandy well but they have turned their attention to other candidates

:19:32. > :19:35.including former Celtic footballer, Willie McStay.

:19:35. > :19:45.Cliftonville have issued pounds to six of the club's supporters in the

:19:45. > :19:49.

:19:50. > :19:54.wake of violence in North Belfast. The statement on the Cliftonville

:19:54. > :19:57.website adds that the club intends to issue further suspensions as

:19:57. > :20:01.investigations into the recent disturbances continued.

:20:01. > :20:06.After a busy festive period of local football action, Linfield

:20:06. > :20:13.have extended their lead at the top of the table. They are five points

:20:13. > :20:23.clear of Portadown who lost ground after a 2-1 defeat at Crusaders. If

:20:23. > :20:24.

:20:24. > :20:29.this was a perfect start to 2012. Portadown would have used this as a

:20:29. > :20:34.-- viewed this as an opportunity missed.

:20:34. > :20:39.They played without their captain who was forced off after 10 minutes.

:20:39. > :20:44.His replacement made an immediate impact scoring shortly after his

:20:44. > :20:49.introduction. For Portadown keeper, David, they

:20:49. > :20:57.would have been further ahead. The home side were level thanks to this

:20:57. > :21:00.goal. It was Crusaders who left with

:21:00. > :21:06.three points banked to this late winner.

:21:06. > :21:16.It is a massive three points today. Friday night, it will be a tough

:21:16. > :21:17.

:21:17. > :21:22.game. We will be well prepared for The game was built around the team

:21:22. > :21:31.structure and they were superb. They held great shape all day and

:21:31. > :21:38.worked incredibly hard. One of them has had a baby and has been up for

:21:38. > :21:43.48 hours. He came and played. It was tough. This time last year,

:21:43. > :21:46.Crusaders won 10 consecutive league games and will take something like

:21:46. > :21:51.that from one of Linfield's challengers to stop the title going

:21:51. > :21:55.to Windsor Park again this year. Robbie Keane is on the verge of

:21:55. > :22:01.making a return to the English Premier League with Aston Villa.

:22:01. > :22:07.The Republic of Ireland captain, whose club LA Galaxy are out of

:22:07. > :22:12.season, has agreed to join on loan for the next two months. He is

:22:12. > :22:16.working with Tottenham and is working on his fitness.

:22:16. > :22:20.Paddy Wallace is one of five Ireland international players to be

:22:20. > :22:26.recalled to the Ulster rugby squad for the Pro 12 trip to Edinburgh.

:22:26. > :22:31.He hasn't played since November because of injury. He returns with

:22:31. > :22:39.Stephen Ferris, Tom Court and others. According to the Ulster

:22:39. > :22:44.coach, the return of the International continued --

:22:45. > :22:48.continued his -- international contingent is timely. He always

:22:49. > :22:53.brings extra energy and the guys love to have him back. It changes

:22:53. > :23:00.the atmosphere. From that point of view, we have trained well this

:23:00. > :23:04.week. Hopefully it will put us in a positive frame of mind for Friday.

:23:04. > :23:08.Two men from here are planning to smash the record for travelling

:23:08. > :23:12.around the world in a speedboat. This speedboat. They have been
