:00:17. > :00:24.Good evening. This is BBC Newsline with Noel Thompson and Donna

:00:24. > :00:29.Traynor. The headlines this Tuesday evening: A gun attack in north

:00:29. > :00:32.Belfast leaves a father and daughter critically ill.

:00:32. > :00:36.The impartiality of the Historical Inquiries Team is questioned in a

:00:37. > :00:40.university report. Six people die within ten days at a nursing home

:00:40. > :00:50.in County Donegal. 95 consultants posts remain

:00:50. > :00:50.

:00:50. > :00:55.unfilled in local hospitals. And none of can Graeme McDowell

:00:55. > :00:59.become the first Irish golfer to win the Masters? Join me from a

:00:59. > :01:02.customer. After today's blast of winter, you

:01:02. > :01:11.may be wondering if we are in for a white Easter. Join me for the

:01:11. > :01:14.Good evening. The police say the father and

:01:14. > :01:16.teenage daughter who were shot in North Belfast this morning are

:01:16. > :01:19.lucky to be alive. Both are described as critically ill in

:01:19. > :01:22.hospital. It is believed two men were involved in the attack, which

:01:22. > :01:32.happened in Evelyn Gardens at 8.15am. Conor Macauley has been to

:01:32. > :01:37.the scene. It was a routine morning run. The 47-year-old father was

:01:37. > :01:41.taking his 18-year-old daughter to school when the gunman struck. He

:01:41. > :01:48.walked up wearing a balaclava and opened fire in the street outside

:01:48. > :01:53.the house. Demands is the in the chest., his doctor was shot in the

:01:53. > :01:59.stomach and hand. His injuries are life-threatening. She is described

:01:59. > :02:03.as critical but stable. Neighbours reported hearing a number of shops

:02:03. > :02:09.at about half past eight this morning. The mother, who was in the

:02:09. > :02:14.house at the time, came out just in time to see the small red van used

:02:14. > :02:18.by the gunman turn-off towards the Cavehill Road. It is believed that

:02:18. > :02:26.this is the vehicle used by the gunmen at his getaway driver. It

:02:26. > :02:30.was found burnt out in the Old Park. There has been much speculation

:02:30. > :02:36.about a Motors, but this afternoon the officer in charge of the

:02:36. > :02:40.investigation told reporters it was too early to say for sure. It is

:02:40. > :02:49.too early to discuss motives. There is a range of information that we

:02:49. > :02:54.are looking at. We're asking anyone in the area off Evelyn Gardens or

:02:54. > :03:00.Ballymoney Street to come forward to the police. This was a very

:03:00. > :03:09.brutal attack in a very quiet area, a residential area, a lot of very

:03:09. > :03:13.settled its people in the community. It is believed both shooting

:03:13. > :03:18.victims spent time in theatre this afternoon. Police have asked anyone

:03:18. > :03:22.who was close to the scene of the shooting or where the getaway

:03:22. > :03:26.vehicle was burnt out to get in touch with them.

:03:26. > :03:29.A woman believed to be in her mid- 60s has died in a house fire in

:03:29. > :03:31.Lisburn. Fire crews were called to the property in Maralin Avenue this

:03:31. > :03:34.morning. Care workers raised the alarm when they arrived at the

:03:34. > :03:37.bungalow, just before 10.00am. When firefighters entered the house they

:03:37. > :03:43.found the woman in the living room, where a small fire had burnt itself

:03:43. > :03:46.out. It is believed to have been accidental.

:03:46. > :03:48.A nursing home in County Donegal is at the centre of a health

:03:48. > :03:51.investigation following the deaths of six residents. It is understood

:03:51. > :04:00.the residents were all over 80. Teresa Craig reports from Fahan

:04:00. > :04:04.near Buncrana. The deaths happened at Nasa with

:04:04. > :04:08.nursing home, which provides residential care for older people.

:04:08. > :04:13.Six people are known to have died at their home in the last two weeks.

:04:13. > :04:18.It is understood that five of the debts were in the last five days.

:04:18. > :04:22.It is not yet known what caused the illness, although it is believed to

:04:23. > :04:26.have been other respiratory nature. I have spoken to some relatives of

:04:26. > :04:31.the residents who said they were anxious to know the cause of the

:04:31. > :04:35.debts. One local councillor has said that there is now concern

:04:36. > :04:40.about this close-knit community. is very, very sad. There are a lot

:04:40. > :04:46.of people affected. There is a question as to what happened and

:04:46. > :04:54.why it happened. There are still 27 other people sick who need to be

:04:54. > :04:59.looked after. We don't know what is the cause of the problem. Hopefully

:04:59. > :05:02.we will find that this evening. In a statement, the Sisters of

:05:02. > :05:06.Nazareth expressed their deepest condolences and said he would like

:05:06. > :05:09.to reassure the families of residents of their receiving a high

:05:09. > :05:14.standard of care and that they are working closely with the help the

:05:14. > :05:18.authorities to ensure that they have all the access and information

:05:18. > :05:22.that they need at this critical time. The Irish Health Service

:05:22. > :05:26.Executive said that all residents here are currently receiving either

:05:26. > :05:31.active or for vented of treatment and that all appropriate control

:05:31. > :05:36.measures have been put in place. Tests and swabs were taken

:05:36. > :05:42.yesterday evening attended a soap those results will be back some

:05:42. > :05:45.time today. The Health Service is making the

:05:45. > :05:48.headlines again. Yesterday the BBC learned that the Belfast Trust is

:05:48. > :05:50.investigating a second death at the Royal, now we discover that 95

:05:51. > :05:53.consultant posts, some in A&E, have not been filled. The British

:05:53. > :05:56.Medical Association says the authorities must plan ahead if they

:05:56. > :06:00.are to end the waiting list crisis. Our Health Correspondent, Marie-

:06:00. > :06:06.Louise Connolly has more details. How significant are 95 unfilled

:06:06. > :06:10.posts and what is the breakdown across the hospitals? While this

:06:10. > :06:15.figure represents around 10 % of the consultant workforce, we can

:06:15. > :06:20.only assume that so long as the posts remain open that management

:06:20. > :06:26.see these posts as being essential to the system. Let's look at how

:06:26. > :06:31.these figures breakdown. At the Royal Victoria there are 20

:06:32. > :06:38.unfilled consultant posts. Six in the Royal Belfast Hospital for six

:06:38. > :06:47.- for Sick children and the City Hospital has it. In Craigavon there

:06:47. > :06:54.are 12, Daisy Hill has seven. The Ulster Hospital has 10 posts.

:06:54. > :06:59.Altnagelvin hospital has 10. Into Northern Health Trust, there are

:06:59. > :07:07.six unfilled posts in the Antrim Area Hospital. Because in the

:07:07. > :07:12.Antrim area with the alarm was raised. De MLA for the area decided

:07:12. > :07:16.to ask the question. He has described the figure as shocking

:07:16. > :07:20.and accused the Northern Health Trust of not filling the posts in

:07:20. > :07:25.order to save money. These are the department's own figures. They

:07:25. > :07:29.should not have needed me or anyone else to ask the question to show

:07:29. > :07:34.the scale of the problem. They should be coming to terms with the

:07:34. > :07:42.realities of the vacancies that exist in trying to fill them.

:07:42. > :07:47.Northern Health Trust said the - said they are trying to fill the

:07:47. > :07:54.posts and depict this advert in the paper today. Over the course of the

:07:54. > :08:00.past 18 months we have filled 30 posts. Since 2007 the number of

:08:00. > :08:04.consultants has gone up by about 25 more staff. And I am not sure what

:08:04. > :08:12.the source of the information is, but to assure the public, it is not

:08:12. > :08:16.true. It the problem is not money, what is it? It seems to be down to

:08:16. > :08:20.workforce planning, planning ahead, planning for the future. The BMA

:08:20. > :08:26.says it is critical that the Department of Health plans not just

:08:26. > :08:31.for the next seven weeks, seven months but for the next seven years.

:08:31. > :08:34.They should be looking 10 years ahead. If that means looking at how

:08:34. > :08:40.their numbers in the intake of her students, they should look at that

:08:40. > :08:44.as well. We need to look at how the doctors will be trains and the

:08:44. > :08:49.services that will be required in the future and Taylor are were

:08:49. > :08:55.forced to the needs of the health service. There is a question mark

:08:55. > :08:59.over how be readily consultants work. I understand him one health

:08:59. > :09:03.trust that clings to one speciality, a consultant may only carry out a

:09:03. > :09:12.procedure wanted twice a month and this is not making any impact at

:09:12. > :09:15.all on waiting-lists. The independence of the Historical

:09:15. > :09:18.Enquiries Team has been called into question relating to killings by

:09:18. > :09:20.soldiers during the Troubles. A report from the University of

:09:20. > :09:22.Ulster claims that in their investigations soldiers are given

:09:22. > :09:27.favourable treatment. Our Home Affairs correspondent, Vincent

:09:27. > :09:32.Kearney, has this exclusive report. Soldiers based in this former

:09:33. > :09:37.church hall in Ballymurphy shot dead 11 civilians over a three-day

:09:37. > :09:42.period in August 1971. The Historical Enquiries Team his

:09:42. > :09:48.reviewing the circumstances of the killings and more than 140 others

:09:48. > :09:52.by soldiers between 1970 and 1973. All of the killings were originally

:09:52. > :09:58.investigated by the Royal Military Police but nine years ago a court

:09:58. > :10:00.ruled that those investigations had been inadequate. The Historical

:10:00. > :10:07.Enquiries Team set up an independent team of former police

:10:07. > :10:12.officers from outside Northern Ireland to re examine what happened.

:10:12. > :10:16.Dr Lundy is a senior lecturer at the University of Ulster and to

:10:16. > :10:21.spend more than two years reviewing how the cases are reinvestigated.

:10:21. > :10:25.don't believe that today's Independent. The evidence from the

:10:25. > :10:31.research suggested is not because the interviews are not impartial,

:10:31. > :10:34.affected or transparent. She claims the Historical Enquiries Team gives

:10:34. > :10:40.former soldiers special treatment by giving them much more pre-

:10:40. > :10:45.interview material than when the paramilitary killings are being

:10:45. > :10:50.investigated. A I have interviewed a number of solicitors and their

:10:50. > :10:53.indicated to me that in the cases were they represent suspects and

:10:53. > :10:59.paramilitary cases they do not get this very fulsome Prix interview

:10:59. > :11:04.disclosure. It seems to me there is a more generous approach taken to

:11:04. > :11:08.the military cases. This solicitor represents the families of those

:11:08. > :11:15.killed in Ballymurphy and a number of others, including the mother of

:11:15. > :11:20.Francis Rowntree, an 11-year-old killed by a plastic bullet. He

:11:20. > :11:23.shares the concerns raised in the report. I think that the best

:11:23. > :11:30.approach is to have a totally independent unit dealing with the

:11:30. > :11:32.British Army cases. At present it is not sufficiently independent.

:11:32. > :11:36.The Historical Enquiries Team rejects the criticism, pointing out

:11:36. > :11:44.that there had been a number of cases where families of victims of

:11:44. > :11:50.army - up army shootings welcomed apologies after the 8GT rejected

:11:50. > :11:58.the original military version of events. They include the family of

:11:58. > :12:02.this man, shot dead at this army checkpoint in February 1988. The

:12:02. > :12:07.soldier responsible claimed he fired his gun accidentally, but

:12:07. > :12:12.that claim was dismissed in a report published by the Historical

:12:12. > :12:16.Enquiries Team. It is directly accountable to the Chief Constable

:12:16. > :12:22.and Dr Lundy's report will be discussed by the police and border

:12:22. > :12:25.on Thursday. In a statement the PSNI said that the Chief Constable

:12:25. > :12:32.recognises that there have been some questions raised and he will

:12:32. > :12:38.address those issues. But he said he will also consider whether to

:12:38. > :12:42.commission an independent review of historical inquiries team processes.

:12:42. > :12:46.This is BBC Newsline and still to come on the programme: Titanic tat?

:12:46. > :12:51.The less tasteful end of the global brand born in Belfast We hear from

:12:51. > :12:59.the remarkable motorcyclist who survived this crash, and is riding

:12:59. > :13:02.An Ulster Unionist councillor believes a bomb left outside his

:13:02. > :13:08.home in County Fermanagh could be part of a sectarian campaign to

:13:08. > :13:11.force Protestants to move out of the area. The device, which the

:13:11. > :13:14.police have described as viable, was left near Harold Andrews' home

:13:14. > :13:22.in Rosslea. He's been speaking to our Fermanagh district journalist,

:13:22. > :13:27.Julian Fowler. The bomb was found in the lane

:13:27. > :13:30.leading to Harold Andrews's far. His family have lived you for four

:13:30. > :13:36.generations. The Ulster Unionist councillor says that following a

:13:36. > :13:42.number of recent incidents, some families from the bodies and

:13:42. > :13:46.community feel that their living under siege. It is intimidating for

:13:46. > :13:50.the small Protestant population in this area. During the height of the

:13:50. > :13:56.troubles there was quite a number of families who were forced out of

:13:56. > :14:01.the area. It would appear that there are certain individuals who

:14:01. > :14:08.don't want the peace process to be successful and they want to turn

:14:08. > :14:12.the clock back. Hopefully, they would be able to achieve their aim.

:14:12. > :14:20.Last year a gas launder connected to wires was left 50 yards down the

:14:20. > :14:26.road. It was a hoax, but the police say the pipe bomb found yesterday

:14:26. > :14:32.was viable. Harold Andrews says a victim of a recent incident in the

:14:32. > :14:36.area is also convinced that the motive is to force Protestants out.

:14:36. > :14:41.It would seem that this is something similar, to intimidate

:14:42. > :14:45.people to leave the area. I won't be leaving the area anyway.

:14:45. > :14:54.Dissident republicans are believed to be responsible. The police said

:14:54. > :14:58.they are keeping an open mind to the motor. - to the motives.

:14:58. > :15:01.It is difficult to ignore that we are in the middle of all things

:15:01. > :15:04.Titanic. The centenary of the sinking is in a couple of weeks,

:15:04. > :15:07.but we have already had the opening of the new visitor building,

:15:07. > :15:10.exhibitions, dramas and there is much more to come. It is also an

:15:10. > :15:14.opportunity for business to cash in on the attraction of what has

:15:14. > :15:18.become a global brand. Mervyn Jess reports.

:15:18. > :15:27.Putting the word Titanic on to something, anything, was a public

:15:27. > :15:31.fascination even before the liner sank her lip - sank a century ago.

:15:31. > :15:39.Harder facts here include this coveted invitation to the launch of

:15:39. > :15:49.the ship in Belfast. Decades later, Titanic is off the front page to

:15:49. > :15:50.

:15:50. > :15:58.the newspapers, and it is on the front page Hof a comic-book. The

:15:58. > :16:04.name has appeared on many items. is a great thing for local people

:16:04. > :16:12.and local businesses. It is something we can claim as a Rome.

:16:12. > :16:17.It is some international brands. The Titanic as a brand it as a bolt

:16:17. > :16:26.over the years. In the last 20 years they Titanic became something

:16:26. > :16:31.we started to feel proud of. Titanic is everywhere. There are no

:16:31. > :16:36.complaints from the businesses benefiting from the sales.

:16:36. > :16:45.whisky has been selling extremely well. We sold out over the weekend.

:16:45. > :16:49.It has been one to take on for the tourists. This is the Titanic suite.

:16:49. > :16:55.This used to be the hotels prestigious Clinton presidential

:16:55. > :17:02.suite. We call it the Titanic suite because it has got more meaning and

:17:02. > :17:07.more appeal worldwide. Titanic is here, forever, and it will be parts

:17:07. > :17:12.of us going forward. It is a huge brand. Like it or loathe it, there

:17:12. > :17:16.is no getting away from the Titanic Brent, at least not this year.

:17:16. > :17:24.Weather products of this time can sustain themselves in the years

:17:24. > :17:27.ahead, that is a matter of personal For much more on the Titanic,

:18:16. > :18:21.with the sport news. Mark. I could be doing with an anorak.

:18:21. > :18:29.The reason we are here is because this wee village is feeling the

:18:29. > :18:37.recession, so to restore some civic pride they have done this, giving

:18:37. > :18:42.the business is a facelift. The local famous sporting sons, Willie-

:18:51. > :18:54.of four contenders for the famous Green Jacket. Rory McIlroy, Darren

:18:54. > :18:56.Clarke, Padraig Harrington and Graeme McDowell have six Majors

:19:05. > :19:08.previous US Open triumph, as he has been telling Stephen Watson.

:19:08. > :19:15.Flying the flag for Northern Ireland at the Masters is something

:19:15. > :19:18.Graham Goodall is very proud of. This tournaments is a unique

:19:18. > :19:23.experience for players and fans alike and Graham Goodall is

:19:23. > :19:32.thrilled to be making another appearance. It just has that

:19:32. > :19:42.special edge to it. Players walk on eggshells at its. The tradition and

:19:42. > :19:44.

:19:44. > :19:50.the history, it has that special feeling that gives you goose bumps.

:19:51. > :19:54.He arrives here with his game in the best shape since his US Open

:19:54. > :20:00.triumph in 2010 and he is dreaming of winning another of the biggest

:20:00. > :20:04.prizes in golf. There would be nothing better than slipping on

:20:04. > :20:08.that green jackets. Maybe aside from the Open Championship, this is

:20:08. > :20:14.the one I would love to win. It hasn't been a happy hunting ground

:20:14. > :20:22.for me, but I feel if I can do certain things well, chip and putt,

:20:22. > :20:25.get my self doing well on a few tee-shots, you never know. Graham

:20:25. > :20:31.big toll is surrounded by family and friends and is hoping to

:20:31. > :20:36.deliver more major success. I think people in Northern Ireland are

:20:36. > :20:46.getting a bit impatient. It has been nearly eight months since he

:20:46. > :20:49.

:20:49. > :20:57.won a major! It must be my turn again. It has been an exciting few

:20:57. > :21:06.years. I think there is more to come. This is the most famous part

:21:06. > :21:10.of the course, Amen corner. No golfer from Ireland has ever won

:21:10. > :21:19.this prestigious tournament. Let's hope when the final round reaches

:21:19. > :21:24.here on Sunday one of the Irish quartet is in the next. - in their

:21:24. > :21:27.We will hear from Rory McIlroy later tonight at 10.30pm and

:21:27. > :21:31.Stephen will have a special feature on the Holywood star on tomorrow

:21:31. > :21:34.night's BBC Newsline. Now here in Toome is a man who is currently

:21:34. > :21:40.featuring, along with other local sports stars, on the walls of his

:21:41. > :21:47.hometown, but, in truth, he's very lucky to be with us at all. The man

:21:47. > :21:53.on his motorcycle has cheated death. This footage taken eight months ago

:21:53. > :21:58.shows John Laverty crash of 120 miles an hour. He broke his body

:21:58. > :22:06.from bottom to top. He smashed both ankles and feet, shattered his

:22:06. > :22:13.knees and pelvis, broke several ribs and dislocated both shoulders.

:22:13. > :22:18.His spine was intact and so began months of intensive rehabilitation.

:22:18. > :22:24.After extensive surgery came weeks in the hydro pool and then the gym.

:22:24. > :22:28.In his own words, the surgeons, nurses and physiotherapists at the

:22:29. > :22:37.World Victoria Hospital have put me back together again. Last week,

:22:37. > :22:45.with the help of this zero-gravity treadmill, she ran again. Next week

:22:46. > :22:53.he will get back on his motorbike. Brands Hatch, Monday. I have got to

:22:53. > :23:00.ask this, are you crazy? Numerous people have asked that. I suppose

:23:00. > :23:10.we have a different mindset as a racer. We just want to get back to

:23:10. > :23:12.

:23:12. > :23:18.what we're used to doing. What is it like to be on the wall of fame?

:23:18. > :23:24.Big civic pride and a big boost for you! It is a big honour to be on

:23:24. > :23:34.this wall. It is a privilege for us and it is great to see what the

:23:34. > :23:36.

:23:36. > :23:41.community has done. I want to take you back. I spent the day with you

:23:41. > :23:45.last week up the Royal Hospital. To see which you have come through in

:23:45. > :23:49.the last eight months, meeting your wife and little girl, then to

:23:49. > :23:59.contemplate that you are going to get back on a motorbike. But any

:24:00. > :24:10.pointer to contemplate quitting? Our mindset is if you're fit and

:24:10. > :24:12.

:24:12. > :24:19.able to go back, why not? We do push ourselves hard to get back. I

:24:19. > :24:29.am back to the kind of fitness for I can do it, so why not? We wish

:25:28. > :25:33.temperatures dropping away from the coast. He could get down to three

:25:33. > :25:41.degrees below freezing tonight. A lot of the roads and pavements
