:01:52. > :01:56.the BBC "This World" programme revealed that as a priest in 1975,
:01:56. > :02:00.Cardinal Brady was among a small group of people given the names and
:02:00. > :02:05.addresses of children being abused or at risk of abuse, but did not
:02:05. > :02:08.notified their parents. Cardno Brady says he was part of what he
:02:09. > :02:16.accepts was an unhelpful culture of deference and silence. -- Cardinal
:02:16. > :02:22.Sean Brady but he said under church rolls, he had no authority over
:02:22. > :02:27.Father Brendan Smyth. Even though he had been molesting
:02:27. > :02:35.boys and girls and all sides of the border, for 40 years. One of his
:02:35. > :02:43.victims was a teenage altar boy. He told the Church what was happening
:02:43. > :02:45.back in 1975. It was already known one of those he taught to became a
:02:45. > :02:50.Catholic Primate of All Ireland. But what has now emerged is that
:02:50. > :02:55.the then Father Brady and to superiors had been given the names
:02:55. > :03:01.and addresses of five other children who either had been abused
:03:01. > :03:05.or who had been cut out risk. given him the names of the other
:03:05. > :03:12.children. I knew for a fight that he was abused and the other boy, he
:03:12. > :03:16.told me he was abused. -- new fund a fact. One other boy was
:03:16. > :03:21.interviewed by none of that children's families were told. The
:03:21. > :03:25.BBC documentary team traced the children, one of them to Belfast.
:03:25. > :03:33.Nobody came to our House are should have came to her house and warned
:03:33. > :03:41.our family. My sister, from the years after that, she was abused.
:03:41. > :03:45.And then Cousins after that. "This World" showed documents. One
:03:45. > :03:50.is in Sean Brady's own handwriting in which he states he was
:03:50. > :03:54.dispatched to investigate a complaint. Even though in the
:03:54. > :04:03.church having insisted that his role was that of an not figure.
:04:03. > :04:07.When Cardno Brady was approach, he insisted his job had been done. He
:04:07. > :04:12.insisted his superiors at the time had attracted and in 19 Sunday five
:04:12. > :04:19.there were no church guidelines on how to handle child abuse. -- in
:04:19. > :04:26.1975. But the programme makers talked to an expert in charge loss.
:04:26. > :04:31.I did my duty, I followed orders. If he did not do it, he should have
:04:31. > :04:37.told the bishop and the other families needed to be notified. The
:04:38. > :04:43.man was not a robot. Cardinal Brady is now 72 and has said sorry many
:04:43. > :04:49.times before. Today brought another apology, but as with each time
:04:49. > :04:55.before, he also sees no reason to resign.
:04:55. > :04:59.This morning, Cardinal Brady issued a statement claiming the programme
:04:59. > :05:04.are exaggerated and misrepresented his role in the investigation into
:05:04. > :05:10.Father Brendan Smyth. He deeply regretted those with the authority
:05:10. > :05:19.and a spotty to deal with them fail to do so. -- and responsibility. He
:05:19. > :05:23.told RTE's Tommy Gorman that he had treated the Smith case seriously in
:05:23. > :05:29.19 Sunday five. I do not have the awareness that I now have of the
:05:29. > :05:35.impact that behaviour was having on those children, but I did gather up
:05:35. > :05:44.the notes and take them promptly to my bishop, confirmed by the
:05:44. > :05:50.evidence of one other a wetness. And brought these to their

:05:56. > :06:02.abuse could be stopped was to restrict the movement of Brendan

:06:19. > :06:29.up to 1988, did your stomach turn? Yes, definitely. I was devastated

:06:34. > :06:42.by that. Had she not followed it through? I do not think it was my
:06:42. > :06:48.role to follow through. I did my part. As a human being. I never
:06:48. > :06:56.doubted that it would not be followed through. I was so sure
:06:56. > :07:03.that it would be dealt with. I had no knowledge of Brendan Smyth's
:07:03. > :07:08.history before that are after that. Until the 1990s. Are you asking
:07:08. > :07:11.yourself in the circumstances because of what happened, not
:07:11. > :07:16.through my deliberate action or inaction, but because I was a party
:07:16. > :07:21.of what happened, that may be may be better for all concerned that I
:07:22. > :07:28.stepped aside? Has across your mind? Obviously, that has crossed
:07:28. > :07:33.my time. But at the sign time when I give an account of what I did, I
:07:33. > :07:39.did what I was expected to do at the best of my ability, promptly
:07:39. > :07:43.and effectively, then I do not think it is a resigning matter. --
:07:43. > :07:50.at the same time. He has also released a lengthy statement which

:07:53. > :07:56.clerical child abuse lie deeply painful stories. Our reporter met
:07:57. > :08:00.one woman today who was abused by Father Brendan Smyth just a couple
:08:00. > :08:04.of years after the church inquiry at the centre of the BBC
:08:04. > :08:14.documentary. She has spoken for the first sign of how she is still
:08:14. > :08:15.
:08:15. > :08:22.coming to terms with what happened 35 years ago. -- for the first time.
:08:22. > :08:26.I was brought on to his knee. You wore skirts because you were young.
:08:26. > :08:30.I do not remember leaving the room. I do not remember going back
:08:30. > :08:35.upstairs. A 44-year-old mother of five, this woman is still
:08:35. > :08:38.struggling to deal with the sexual abuse Father Brendan Smyth
:08:38. > :08:48.inflicted on her. It happened in the late 70s when she was 10 years
:08:48. > :08:49.
:08:49. > :08:59.old. It happened after the charge led inquiry in which father Brady
:08:59. > :09:05.participated. Lots of us would not have been victims if it had been
:09:05. > :09:10.dealt with. It would have been over. It should have been dealt with by
:09:10. > :09:13.the police that there and then. believes Cardno Brady should resign
:09:13. > :09:23.and she is ill coping with the legacy of what happened 35 years
:09:23. > :09:24.
:09:24. > :09:31.later. -- she is still. You want to deal with it and then you close it
:09:31. > :09:41.away with the -- calls it away again. But it keeps coming back.

:10:16. > :10:20.abuse by priests in the republic saying? What has the reaction been?
:10:20. > :10:24.There has been almost universal condemnation of Cardinal Sean Brady
:10:24. > :10:28.by the survivors are victims of child sex abuse by priests. One
:10:28. > :10:32.woman said that the panel's position as nothing to do with
:10:32. > :10:35.note-taking guidelines. She says that the programme last night made
:10:35. > :10:39.it clear that a 14-year-old boy knew the difference between right
:10:39. > :10:43.and wrong. She says the cardinal should have told the parents. She
:10:43. > :10:48.says the cardinal has a free will and conscience which she seems not
:10:48. > :10:54.have acted upon and is no position to continue in the position he is
:10:54. > :10:57.in the church. When this issue first arose two years ago, the
:10:57. > :11:04.cardinal said he would not stand down by Tea would lead the Church
:11:04. > :11:10.as a wounded leader or a pastor. But he has now told Ben that is an
:11:10. > :11:16.action and was unforgivable. He is a self-serving careerist and that
:11:16. > :11:21.is why he has kept his mouth shut for all the years Father Brendan

:11:35. > :11:41.and shocking and a tragedy for the victims. Enda Kenny has been very
:11:41. > :11:46.critical of the Catholic Church, notably last July in the wake of
:11:46. > :11:51.that report into child sex abuse by priests. This afternoon I asked
:11:51. > :11:55.Enda Kenny far his reaction to the programme last night and he began
:11:55. > :12:02.by saying that the whole issue of child sex abuse was a priority for
:12:02. > :12:09.his coalition Government, that is why he induced a Minister for
:12:10. > :12:15.children at Cabinet level. -- introduced.
:12:15. > :12:18.That is why it is important that every a organisation dealing with
:12:18. > :12:26.children, including religious our organisation to, play their full
:12:26. > :12:35.part in Government. Sort this can never happen again. Irrespective of
:12:35. > :12:41.Cardno Brady. That is his reaction. In Northern
:12:41. > :12:45.Ireland the First Minister has said he found the report very disturbing.

:16:42. > :16:46.suffered. If the head of the trust can't give us answers or if she
:16:46. > :16:51.can't take action to discipline somebody, she is not doing her job
:16:51. > :17:01.and she should resign. So far be Western Health Trust hasn't

:17:12. > :17:17.While three cases are identified in Craigavon, a report concludes the
:17:17. > :17:22.delay in diagnosis was not detrimental to their care. However,
:17:22. > :17:26.for the four patients, their treatment may have been delayed.

:18:04. > :18:09.support forced staff and better communication between hospitals and
:18:09. > :18:14.families. Their report doesn't address the issue of accountability.
:18:14. > :18:19.For our responsibility as a regulator is to undertake an
:18:19. > :18:24.inquiry of what happened and to do that from a perspective of being an
:18:24. > :18:29.inquiring organisation. The question of accountability and
:18:29. > :18:39.responsibility is outside the remit of the review. That rests with the
:18:39. > :18:51.
:18:51. > :18:55.Yet again another independent review into how health care is
:18:55. > :18:59.managed and it concludes that there were lost opportunities and lessons
:19:00. > :19:04.should be learned. The question still remains. When, by their

:21:10. > :21:15.they are and haven't interviewed any of them. Shauna Carberry is
