:00:16. > :00:26.Welcome to BBC Newsline with Donna Traynor. The headlines this

:00:26. > :00:27.

:00:27. > :00:33.evening: He's back on top of the world - Rory gets his second major.

:00:33. > :00:38.I am live at Holywood Golf Club with all the reaction to Rory's

:00:38. > :00:44.record-breaking success. The boys are back in town and BBC

:00:44. > :00:47.Newsline is live at our Olympic medallists for the homecoming.

:00:47. > :00:56.A scathing report finds a culture of fear and mistrust in the Fire

:00:56. > :01:02.Service. It is back to normal - more

:01:02. > :01:05.unsettled weather coming this week. I'll have the forecast later.

:01:05. > :01:07.Hot on the heels of Northern Ireland's best ever medal tally at

:01:07. > :01:11.the Olympics, we're celebrating another home-grown success with

:01:11. > :01:17.Rory McIlroy. The 23 year-old from Holywood won the USPGA tournament,

:01:17. > :01:27.one of the sport's four majors and it was by a record-breaking margin.

:01:27. > :01:27.

:01:28. > :01:31.Stephen Watson is in Holywood for While any of us were watching the

:01:31. > :01:38.closing ceremony of the Olympics, this success there Rory McIlory

:01:38. > :01:42.caught us off guard last night? Absolutely. Apart from last hardy

:01:42. > :01:47.golf fans and everyone here at Holywood Golf Club, it seemed the

:01:47. > :01:50.world was good to the Spice girls and the final celebrations of the

:01:50. > :01:55.Olympians in London but many of us could not take her eyes of what was

:01:55. > :02:02.happening across the Atlantic at the golf course in South Carolina.

:02:02. > :02:09.Rory McIlory turned in a come cutely incredible performance. He

:02:09. > :02:14.lifted the famous trophy. He returned to Number One in the world.

:02:15. > :02:21.He secured his second major championship in emphatic style.

:02:21. > :02:31.Here is how he did it. Yet another winner's trophy for the

:02:31. > :02:46.

:02:46. > :02:53.Holywood golfer who has become a global sports star. Rory McIlory

:02:53. > :02:58.was simply untouchable in South Carolina. It dropped in and it was

:02:58. > :03:02.the perfect way to end the perfect day. Something just felt right. I

:03:02. > :03:06.came here, got to my locker room and looked at the window and

:03:06. > :03:11.thought, I like the feel of this place. I got onto the course and I

:03:11. > :03:18.liked what I saw, I loved greens and I thought it was some of the

:03:18. > :03:28.best services we have putted on. Everything just worked out. Rory

:03:28. > :03:33.

:03:33. > :03:38.McIlory made the game look easy. Holding the lead going into the

:03:38. > :03:44.final round, he hit six birdies to pull away from the rest of faint.

:03:44. > :03:48.He showed why he is the best golfer in the world. All I wanted to do

:03:48. > :03:53.was to go and and win the tournament and getting back to the

:03:53. > :03:57.world's number one was just a bonus. Being able to speak to Caroline and

:03:57. > :04:03.my mum back home as well and speak to the people that are very

:04:03. > :04:08.important to you, it is just great to be able to share this with them.

:04:08. > :04:12.He has made a seamless transition from a young prospect to major

:04:12. > :04:18.winner and is now being tipped to become one of golf's all-time

:04:19. > :04:22.greats. I never set out to try and set targets for myself or or decide

:04:22. > :04:27.how many tournaments I wanted to win but to get two tournaments so

:04:27. > :04:32.early on in my career is a huge achievement and it just makes you

:04:32. > :04:36.even hungrier to get more and do the best I can. I realise I am a

:04:36. > :04:41.role model and every time I am on a TV screen or playing on the golf

:04:41. > :04:45.course, I want to set a good example for people to look up to me.

:04:45. > :04:51.I hopefully do that the the most part. Sometimes I don't but mostly

:04:51. > :04:57.I try to do that and continue to try to do that. An extraordinary

:04:57. > :05:02.talent with maturity to match - at 23, the sky is the limit for Rory

:05:03. > :05:06.McIlory. Here at Holywood, people

:05:06. > :05:09.celebrating Rory's victory into the early hours. This is the club where

:05:09. > :05:19.his talent was first spotted and everyone is immensely proud of his

:05:19. > :05:20.

:05:20. > :05:23.latest achievement. To those who have known him all his

:05:23. > :05:28.life, it cannot be much of a surprise that this 10 year-old boy

:05:28. > :05:32.has become the best golfer in the world. Even at this age, he was

:05:32. > :05:37.hitting shots which were the envy of adults. The man who organises

:05:37. > :05:44.events for under 18 supper-club says Rory McIlory stood out. He was

:05:44. > :05:50.always very enthusiastic and very visible here at Holywood. I

:05:50. > :05:54.remember on the 18th fairway, watching him one afternoon, it was

:05:54. > :05:59.raining and the clubs in the bag were taller than him and he just

:05:59. > :06:04.loved it. That a dedication helped him win dozens of cups and

:06:04. > :06:08.championships as a teenager. At the international media noticed his

:06:08. > :06:11.exceptional promise. Those now famous pictures of our young Rory

:06:12. > :06:16.McIlory playing on this course and his amazing success since have had

:06:16. > :06:22.a big effect on the next generation of golfers who are being inspired

:06:22. > :06:26.to be the best they can be. He is amazing and I am really proud of

:06:26. > :06:33.him and he is a good inspiration for everybody will stop it is

:06:33. > :06:36.incredible, to win by eight shots is just incredible. Every time they

:06:36. > :06:41.go into the clubhouse, they are reminded of his achievements. Now

:06:41. > :06:45.the club will no doubt find space here to mark his second major win.

:06:45. > :06:49.Hollywood is making the most of being the home of one of the best

:06:49. > :06:58.known sports people on the planet. In this part of the world, you know

:06:58. > :07:03.you have done something special when you appear on a cake.

:07:03. > :07:09.Joining the is the general manager of Holywood Golf Club. A everyone

:07:09. > :07:14.keeps asking me today, is there an official homecoming this week, is

:07:14. > :07:21.to bring the trophy here? He is based out in America and he will

:07:21. > :07:25.probably stay at their. We're not expecting him home. Hope fully

:07:25. > :07:34.before Christmas, you may get the trophy Ikea to let everyone see.

:07:34. > :07:38.That would be fantastic. I know he was here a few weeks ago giving a

:07:38. > :07:42.golfer Nick clinic to all the young people here. It is a club which is

:07:42. > :07:46.still dear to his heart and he wanted to give a lot back. Yes he

:07:46. > :07:52.came a few weeks ago and did a golf clinic and had a corporate day here.

:07:52. > :07:56.He does continually support us and he has not tried to lose his

:07:56. > :08:00.connection with us. We're very proud of him. He doesn't just win

:08:00. > :08:04.majors, he winds them in record- breaking style - how impressed

:08:04. > :08:08.where were you with his performance? That is the second

:08:08. > :08:12.major he has won by eight shots. Guys struggle to win it and that

:08:12. > :08:16.says a lot about what he can do going forward and how many majors

:08:16. > :08:21.he can win. He has proved he can win more and when he can win them

:08:21. > :08:25.by eight shots, who knows how many more? He took a lot of criticism

:08:25. > :08:29.this year when he missed four cuts under five, especially defending

:08:29. > :08:35.the US Championship, does this might prove that people were harsh

:08:35. > :08:40.in judging him too early? He is only 23 years old and only five

:08:40. > :08:44.weeks ago he missed four cuts in a row. We were hearing all sorts of

:08:44. > :08:49.things, that he needed to change his coach or caddie, get rid of his

:08:49. > :08:53.girlfriend! You heard all sorts of stuff from experts but luckily he

:08:54. > :08:57.has the sense and majority not to listen to them. He takes his own

:08:57. > :09:06.counsel and has proved them all wrong and it is great. You have

:09:06. > :09:11.known him a long time for. He used to come in when he was playing here

:09:11. > :09:21.and he would be chopping -- chatting to me in between rounds.

:09:21. > :09:23.

:09:23. > :09:26.He used to love the scorecards of my counter and he would fill in the

:09:26. > :09:32.scorecards of incredible scores and then he would sign his name in the

:09:32. > :09:39.players' box and in the market was matchbox he would write Nick Faldo

:09:39. > :09:48.or Tiger Woods! Isn't it fantastic for the last

:09:48. > :09:53.three years, Northern Ireland has had a major golfing champion!

:09:53. > :09:57.You have just returned from London and use of Paddy Barnes and Michael

:09:57. > :10:01.Conlon get their medals, now you have come home and are reporting on

:10:01. > :10:09.more golfing success. Can you sum up for asked what this really means

:10:09. > :10:13.for local sport? I fully expected to be standing one lysed time in

:10:13. > :10:20.our studio outside the Olympic Park tonight, reflecting on what was a

:10:20. > :10:24.magical Olympic Games and a special one for Northern Ireland. Bringing

:10:24. > :10:27.five medals home. We will talk to a couple of our boxers later in the

:10:27. > :10:37.programme. The Coleraine rowers will have a homecoming on Wednesday

:10:37. > :10:39.

:10:39. > :10:43.but to top off, probably the best weeks in sport, just to remind us

:10:43. > :10:48.of how many top sportsmen and women be had in Northern Ireland.

:10:48. > :10:53.Remember, golf is being included in the Olympics in Rio in four years'

:10:53. > :10:56.time so we could have a couple of Olympic golf medallists as well.

:10:56. > :10:59.Still to come on the programme: A scathing report finds a culture of

:10:59. > :11:09.fear and mistrust in the Fire Serivce.

:11:09. > :11:11.

:11:11. > :11:14.How are we paying for our summer holidays this year?

:11:14. > :11:18.A scathing internal review of the Fire and Rescue Service has found

:11:18. > :11:20.that staff are working in a culture of fear and mistrust. The review

:11:20. > :11:25.which follows allegations by whistleblowers is highly critical

:11:25. > :11:29.of management and governance at the organisation. In a significant move,

:11:29. > :11:32.the job of running the service has now been split. An interim Chief

:11:32. > :11:42.Fire Officer will now share the role with an interim Chief

:11:42. > :11:49.

:11:49. > :11:53.Executive, brought in from Scotland. Fire-fighting is a high-risk job

:11:53. > :11:57.often causing tremendous stress for those on the front line. But it is

:11:57. > :12:01.not their actions that are under scrutiny, instead, and what it

:12:01. > :12:05.focuses on those at the very top of the organisation will stop after

:12:05. > :12:10.allegations made by two whistleblowers, the Department of

:12:10. > :12:15.Health carried out its own investigation. Seen by the BBC, it

:12:15. > :12:20.is a damning report which concludes that staff are working in a culture

:12:20. > :12:23.of fear and mistrust. Regarding the behaviour of senior staff, there is

:12:23. > :12:28.systemic problems exacerbated by a lack of strategic direction and

:12:28. > :12:33.guidance from the very top of the organisation. It questions the

:12:33. > :12:37.length of time it takes to develop and implement policies and

:12:37. > :12:41.describes at best a casual approach by some staff were to applying and

:12:41. > :12:47.adhering to existing policies will stop it says there is a culture of

:12:47. > :12:51.shifting blame. For instance, the BBC understands there are up

:12:51. > :12:55.outstanding grievances relating to alleged harassment against one

:12:55. > :13:00.person who continues working within the organisation. Up until recently,

:13:00. > :13:05.these allegations had not been acted upon, either by senior people

:13:05. > :13:10.within the fire service, or within the Department of Health. Last

:13:10. > :13:12.month an employee you received 20,000 compensation after she was

:13:12. > :13:17.suspended for reporting financial wrongdoing. Some of those

:13:17. > :13:21.allegations have been proven true, a separate investigation continues

:13:21. > :13:24.into a recruitment exercise last summer. We understand there are

:13:24. > :13:30.also questions about the authorisation of bonuses over a

:13:30. > :13:35.number of years. The organisation is hiding nothing. In the past two

:13:35. > :13:41.or three years, we have had three chairs, three cheats and a period

:13:41. > :13:45.of instability. That is why morale is low in headquarters because

:13:45. > :13:53.there was a big confidence blow when that initial gaffe happened

:13:53. > :13:57.and we have been working through. My board... What gas was that?

:13:57. > :14:02.Inappropriate payments to nonuniform directors. The auditor

:14:02. > :14:06.does not suggest public safety is being put at risk but it questions

:14:06. > :14:10.staff morale. People I have spoken to have described the atmosphere as

:14:10. > :14:16.toxic, a survival of the fittest, a rat race and an environment where

:14:16. > :14:19.the moral compass has gone askew. would describe it as a rat race. It

:14:19. > :14:24.felt like Dodge City, where you have people doing their own thing

:14:24. > :14:28.in their own way. This is the new entrant chief-executive and

:14:28. > :14:33.Scotland. In a fundamental change, the job of running the service has

:14:33. > :14:37.now been split between him as an Executive and the uniformed chief

:14:37. > :14:41.officer. This is all highly embarrassing, not only for the fire

:14:42. > :14:45.service but for the Department of Health. One it took to

:14:45. > :14:49.whistleblowers to expose what has been going on, it is now the

:14:49. > :14:54.responsibility of this new entrant chief-executive and ultimately the

:14:54. > :14:57.health minister to restore best practice behind closed doors.

:14:57. > :15:00.The County Antrim firm, Wrightbus, has secured a 41 million contract

:15:00. > :15:03.to supply 550 buses to south-east Asia. The vehicles will be produced

:15:03. > :15:09.as kits in the company's Ballymena plant and then assembled in

:15:09. > :15:12.Singapore. The firm will be the main supplier of the vehicles to

:15:12. > :15:22.SBS Transit and has already sold 450 buses to the Asian company

:15:22. > :15:23.

:15:23. > :15:29.since 2010. This is our third order from

:15:29. > :15:35.Singapore in as many years. We started in 2009 with an order for

:15:35. > :15:39.150. Follow that up with another order for 300 so there are four and

:15:39. > :15:43.50 Wrightbus double-deckers in Singapore today. This particular

:15:43. > :15:46.order was of a larger magnitude. The government in Singapore is

:15:46. > :15:49.increasing investment in public transport and we are clearly the

:15:49. > :15:52.beneficiary. A yacht club which was destroyed in

:15:52. > :15:55.an arson attack in Londonderry says its annual regatta on Lough Foyle

:15:55. > :15:58.will go ahead as planned later this month. There has been widespread

:15:58. > :16:01.condemnation of the attack on the clubhouse at Culmore Point which is

:16:01. > :16:05.believed to have been set alight by a gang on Friday night. The inside

:16:05. > :16:13.of the building has been destroyed and it will probably have to be

:16:13. > :16:17.demolished. This is a small club, limited

:16:17. > :16:21.resources and we have just been vandalised and burnt out - a

:16:21. > :16:24.pointless act. Where do we go from here? I am speechless.

:16:24. > :16:28.Our time, our place - it is a slogan that has been difficult to

:16:28. > :16:30.miss over the last six months. It is the name of the campaign to

:16:30. > :16:34.promote Northern Ireland as a must see visitor destination. New events

:16:34. > :16:37.like the MTV awards, the Irish Open and the new Titanic building were

:16:37. > :16:42.promoted as big draws but is it working? Throughout this week, Tara

:16:42. > :16:47.Mills is looking at different sides of the tourism story. This evening

:16:47. > :16:57.she has the results of a survey of 500 of our viewers. We asked them a

:16:57. > :16:57.

:16:57. > :17:02.range of questions including their holiday destination this year.

:17:02. > :17:07.Despite the recession, 45% of those we asked said they would be going

:17:07. > :17:11.abroad this year. The vast majority said they would not let the

:17:11. > :17:15.economic climate spoiling their choice of foreign holiday. How were

:17:15. > :17:20.they pay for it? Perhaps surprisingly, 37% said they had

:17:20. > :17:25.saved up all year to pay for their holiday while around 45% said it

:17:25. > :17:29.was a mixture of savings and credit. Sometimes savings and sometimes

:17:29. > :17:35.when the holiday needs to be taken and you don't have any money, you

:17:35. > :17:40.get the credit card out. Save up physically. I pay for it on my

:17:40. > :17:46.credit card but I make sure I have the money first. Just get the money

:17:46. > :17:51.and go for it. No point in saving. If you want to get out of Belfast,

:17:51. > :17:54.just pay the money and get out. What about those staying at home?

:17:55. > :17:59.15% said they were not going abroad because they simply could not

:18:00. > :18:06.afford it. For a variety of reasons, we decided to watch the pennies

:18:06. > :18:12.this year and stay at home in case we were needed. I have not

:18:12. > :18:17.regretted it at all. It has been great. Let's look at our home-grown

:18:17. > :18:26.a tourist attractions. We asked 500 people which once they had visited.

:18:26. > :18:32.The Giants Causeway came out as No. 1. The Ulster folk and Transport

:18:32. > :18:41.Museum and the Mourne mountains were joint second. It is heaven.

:18:41. > :18:46.The Irish, if their economy is bad, should not worry. It is gorgeous.

:18:46. > :18:51.It seems we are proud of where we come from. 81% said they would

:18:51. > :18:54.recommend Northern Ireland as a tourist destination. Edie 7% said

:18:54. > :18:59.they recognised there were factors that would put people off, not

:18:59. > :19:04.least the weather and the possibility of violence. A lot of

:19:04. > :19:10.foreign countries are not clean, this was very keen. People were

:19:10. > :19:14.friendly. I cannot say anything bad. Knowing about what has gone on in

:19:14. > :19:17.the past and the things we have seen on the news in years gone by,

:19:18. > :19:21.it was amazing to see there is nothing like that. The picture

:19:22. > :19:25.appears to be rosy for this year at least. Tomorrow night we will hear

:19:25. > :19:28.from foreign visitors on why they chose Northern Ireland for their

:19:28. > :19:31.holiday. For those who use Facebook, we have

:19:31. > :19:35.a special poll about how you pay for your holiday and we would like

:19:35. > :19:39.to hear your views. Tomorrow we try to find out how they can encourage

:19:39. > :19:42.those foreign tourists to return. The boxers glory at the Olympics

:19:42. > :19:47.continues a long tradition of Irish success in the ring, especially

:19:47. > :19:57.among Belfast's fighters. Mark Sidebottom is at tonight's

:19:57. > :19:58.

:19:58. > :20:03.homecoming celebration for Paddy Barnes and Michael Conlon.

:20:03. > :20:10.They have all gone boxing balmy here in Belfast. This is what they

:20:10. > :20:17.have turned out for, a big piece of boxing history. Paddy Barnes,

:20:17. > :20:23.double bronze and Michael Conlon. Paddy, what a homecoming? It is

:20:23. > :20:29.brilliant, I didn't expect so many people are to turn out. It is great

:20:29. > :20:34.to see the support. It is amazing. You might have had a late night

:20:34. > :20:39.last night but is this beyond your expectations? I thought the crowd

:20:39. > :20:44.outside was big and then I heard a big noise when it came in and it is

:20:44. > :20:47.unreal, the amount of people here. Let's take a look at you last night,

:20:47. > :20:57.the friend of using bolt to just about every other celebrity out

:20:57. > :20:59.

:20:59. > :21:05.there. Last night, I was on one of the sport staff's shoulders, it was

:21:06. > :21:12.great. Look at this silver medal, 60 years ago in Helsinki, how much

:21:12. > :21:20.have things changed? An awful lot. The boxers are now getting what is

:21:20. > :21:27.due to them. They are getting the chance to earn medals. Freddie, you

:21:27. > :21:33.are both from the same club, 56 years ago you won it. It is long

:21:33. > :21:43.overdue? Very much so. We always had a good crowd of boxers in our

:21:43. > :21:51.

:21:51. > :21:57.club. We had one voice. How good can Michael become? It depends on

:21:57. > :22:07.himself, to -- providing he looks after himself and it doesn't bother

:22:07. > :22:08.

:22:08. > :22:17.with girls! Stay away from the women! Until he becomes champion. I

:22:18. > :22:23.retired after that. Paddy, you are contemplating staying on for Rio,

:22:23. > :22:28.given that the Chinese man has taken a step that? Yes, I think he

:22:28. > :22:33.is too old and he will retire before the next Olympics. I created

:22:33. > :22:38.history by winning him to medals so I wanted to become the first to win
