:00:22. > :00:32.Good evening. The headlines on BBC Newsline.

:00:32. > :00:33.

:00:33. > :00:40.The key role played by our golfers in the Ryder Cup victory.

:00:40. > :00:43.The Orange Order says sorry after a bans man is pictured urinating

:00:43. > :00:46.upside a Catholic church. Still some showers around this

:00:46. > :00:50.evening and overnight. But will the dry up for the week ahead? Find out

:00:50. > :00:53.shortly. In an incredible final day at the

:00:53. > :00:55.Ryder Cup, Europe's golfers beat the US to retain the trophy with

:00:55. > :01:00.the contingent from Northern Ireland playing their part in the

:01:00. > :01:04.astonishing come-back. Although it took a police car to get one of

:01:04. > :01:07.them to the course, and just in the nick of time! If you're sensitive

:01:07. > :01:17.to flash photography, be advised that there is some in this report

:01:17. > :01:24.from Stephen Watson, who is in Illinois for BBC Newsline.

:01:24. > :01:32.Champagne celebrations in Chicago. Time for Rory McIlroy it to start

:01:32. > :01:37.the Ryder Cup party. A Yes! But the day of golfing drama could have

:01:37. > :01:42.been so different. The world's best player had to be rushed to the

:01:42. > :01:47.course in a police car after he made a mistake over his tee-off

:01:47. > :01:53.time. After his caddie and everybody else waited nervously,

:01:53. > :01:58.Rory McIlroy it made it with just minutes to spare. Sometimes maybe

:01:58. > :02:06.it is good not to get here and go through the worry, and to show up.

:02:06. > :02:14.The best part of this thing was the crowds, chanting, "central time-

:02:14. > :02:24.zone"! When he got his breath, the 23-year-old from Hollywood produced

:02:24. > :02:26.

:02:26. > :02:31.He beat his inform American opponent, Bradley. He kept Europe

:02:31. > :02:38.on course for an extraordinary comeback. And when German Martin

:02:38. > :02:44.claimed that eventually got the crucial part, an unforgettable

:02:44. > :02:49.Ryder Cup triumph was complete -- Martin Kaymer the. I was worried, I

:02:49. > :02:53.had 20 minutes to get there, usually it is half-an-hour. I got

:02:53. > :03:02.there with a few minutes to spare so it was fine. Obviously to

:03:02. > :03:09.contribute to this tally of 14, It is just an incredible

:03:09. > :03:15.performance. Disappointing for myself but it is a team effort at

:03:15. > :03:23.the end of the day, and just incredible scenes. 24 hours ago,

:03:23. > :03:30.this was all over. It is all over now. We will read this man wasn't

:03:30. > :03:36.going to turn up? -- were you worried? It did cross my mind!

:03:36. > :03:43.Obviously he got his time wrong. He does not need to warm up. Rolls

:03:43. > :03:50.Royces do not need any warming up! Actually, I did not have much time

:03:50. > :03:54.to think about it. I had a couple of putts and a way I went. I had a

:03:54. > :04:02.stretch in the back of the police car! When was the last time you

:04:03. > :04:10.were in one of those? Not for a long time. Not ever actually! It

:04:10. > :04:17.has been an unbelievable team effort this week.... Northern

:04:17. > :04:24.Ireland! LAUGHTER. The fans could not quite believe

:04:25. > :04:34.what they had witnessed. I flew my dad over from Ireland just to watch

:04:35. > :04:38.

:04:38. > :04:44.it! And there and there was another very proud Ulsterman at the heart

:04:44. > :04:49.of it all. He played very well, he is the number one. To watch him

:04:49. > :04:56.take on that rolled today and, I felt privileged to be walking right

:04:56. > :05:01.beside him today. So it Europe keep their hands on the Ryder Cup in the

:05:01. > :05:06.most spectacular fashion. It was sporting drama at its very best.

:05:06. > :05:10.The next Ryder Cup is in Gleneagles in Scotland in two years' time and

:05:10. > :05:15.there could be an Northern Ireland European team captain, as Darren

:05:15. > :05:18.Clarke is hotly tipped to fulfil that role.

:05:18. > :05:20.A senior member of the Orange Order today apologised to a Catholic

:05:20. > :05:29.priest and his parishioners after a bandsman was pictured urinating at

:05:29. > :05:31.the gates of the church. But there was no apology for widespread

:05:31. > :05:34.breaches of a Parades Commission determination, forbidding bands

:05:34. > :05:38.from playing anything but hymns during part of Saturday's Ulster

:05:38. > :05:45.Covenant rally. It was the biggest Orange gathering in Belfast for

:05:45. > :05:53.many years and passed without serious incident.

:05:53. > :05:59.This is a bird's-eye view of the covenant parade. Six miles long

:06:00. > :06:07.from City Hall to the grounds of Stormont, a celebration of the

:06:07. > :06:09.stand against home wrought a century ago. We still want to be

:06:09. > :06:16.part of the United Kingdom in Northern Ireland, Britishness is

:06:16. > :06:21.still a big part of who we are today. A big security operation was

:06:21. > :06:27.mounted, because of a national protest stage at a Catholic Church

:06:27. > :06:32.over the behaviour of loyalist fans earlier this year. 14 bands took

:06:32. > :06:36.part in this section of the march and they played hymns. The Parades

:06:36. > :06:42.Commission had outlawed anything else. But the way some bands acted

:06:43. > :06:47.attracted criticism. Some of them were a bit exuberant but the

:06:47. > :06:52.process was more respected than it had been before, but it can be

:06:52. > :06:57.sometimes interpreted by members of the community as insulting.

:06:57. > :07:07.Commission had also ruled him so the outside St Matthew's Catholic

:07:07. > :07:10.

:07:10. > :07:15.Church. -- hymns. It defied its legal determination for this leg of

:07:15. > :07:21.the parade. One bandsman was also photographed urinating at the

:07:21. > :07:26.church gate. We are disappointed that a bandsman was urinating

:07:27. > :07:31.through the church gates. I was disappointed to see that some of

:07:31. > :07:36.the bands that were passing and few were abating by the Parades

:07:36. > :07:42.Commission ruling were shouted at for not playing party tunes.

:07:42. > :07:48.Orange Order said sorry in person to the local priest. What exactly

:07:48. > :07:51.is it you were apologising for? behaviour of the bans man, what he

:07:51. > :08:00.did in public should not happen but particularly against a place of

:08:00. > :08:04.worship. It was wrong. Did you cover the conduct of the band and a

:08:04. > :08:09.kind of music it was playing? think there was a police

:08:09. > :08:14.investigation and I would not wish to prejudice any investigation.

:08:14. > :08:18.PSNI gathered video evidence. The PSNI it were not the only people

:08:18. > :08:24.here are observing what went on on Saturday. The Parades Commission

:08:24. > :08:30.had ears and eyes on the ground also, and its chairman says he is

:08:30. > :08:36.awaiting reports on what went wrong. Why there breaches of the

:08:36. > :08:41.determination? I have had some reports but I will not comment

:08:41. > :08:44.until we get police reports and other representation. I think

:08:44. > :08:49.people will draw their own conclusions to that but it is

:08:49. > :08:53.important we gather all of the evidence. Speaking on Saturday, the

:08:53. > :08:58.chief constable was pleased at how the day had gone. I have seen a lot

:08:58. > :09:02.of people with smiles on their face participating and going about their

:09:02. > :09:07.business and at the moment, it is a dignified parade and I am the very

:09:07. > :09:11.grateful for that. There was another act of vandalism at Clifton

:09:11. > :09:17.Street overnight. Paint was thrown on what the order said was a

:09:17. > :09:21.reaction to the parade on Saturday. In a few minutes, head-to-head in

:09:21. > :09:29.the debate over gay marriage. After Stormont rejects the idea, we hear

:09:29. > :09:32.from those in favour and those again here in the studio. -- and

:09:32. > :09:35.those against. Tributes have been paid to David

:09:35. > :09:40.Mills, the former Irish league footballer, who was murdered in

:09:40. > :09:43.Ballynahinch yesterday. The 47- year-old who used to be manager of

:09:43. > :09:52.his local team in Drumaness suffered head injuries in an

:09:52. > :09:58.assault. A 30-year-old man was arrested. Claire Savage reports.

:09:58. > :10:02.A hard-working, popular, likeable, well-loved character. That is how

:10:02. > :10:08.the Friends of David Mills have described him. He had a love of

:10:08. > :10:14.golf, cricket, darts and football. In their 80s and 90s he played

:10:14. > :10:20.football and was on the field when Portadown hosted a top flight

:10:20. > :10:25.Portuguese team. He made 150 appearances for them. He always

:10:25. > :10:31.gave 100%. He was a big player for us in the early years when we first

:10:31. > :10:36.did the double. It was important for us. He was respected on and off

:10:36. > :10:40.the pitch and everyone is in shock. This morning at the scene in

:10:40. > :10:44.Ballynahinch when he was attacked, a number of people left flowers and

:10:44. > :10:49.note to him and his family. A murder investigation is under way

:10:49. > :10:59.as the police try to find out what happened. One local councillor knew

:10:59. > :10:59.

:10:59. > :11:02.him., personal perspective, I know the family well. They are very well

:11:02. > :11:06.known in the Ballynahinch area and I would like to take this

:11:06. > :11:11.opportunity to extend my sympathy on behalf of the people, to the

:11:11. > :11:17.extended family and everybody, that it is a sad loss and a terrible

:11:17. > :11:24.tragedy. In his early years he played for Drumaness. Meanwhile,

:11:24. > :11:28.Drumaness Mills football club have said tributes have also been paid.

:11:28. > :11:33.The retail chain JJB Sports is to close ten of its 12 stores in

:11:33. > :11:37.Northern Ireland with the loss of 150 jobs. All three of its Belfast

:11:37. > :11:40.shops are to shut. One of the group's two Londonderry stores will

:11:40. > :11:45.remain open, along with shops in Antrim and Lisburn, securing 65

:11:45. > :11:50.jobs. The troubled retailer has sold 20 of its stores in Britain to

:11:51. > :11:59.Sports Direct. 133 stores across the UK will close with the loss of

:11:59. > :12:01.2,200. Jobs. The man who went up against Mike

:12:01. > :12:06.Nesbitt for the Ulster Unionist leadership has been stripped of his

:12:06. > :12:09.deputy leader's position. The move against the South Down MLA John

:12:09. > :12:16.McCallister follows a speech which criticised unionist unity. Mark

:12:16. > :12:20.Devenport is at Stormont. What led to this?

:12:20. > :12:26.It was a speech made by John McCallister on Saturday night, in

:12:26. > :12:30.which he said the Ulster Unionists were according to some sleepwalking

:12:30. > :12:34.towards Unionist unity. John McCallister spoke about recent show

:12:34. > :12:39.at events, statements and commemorations in relation to the

:12:39. > :12:43.Big Parade and the Ulster Covenant, involving the leaders of the two

:12:43. > :12:47.main Unionist parties, and he said they gave the impression that the

:12:47. > :12:52.Unionist unity train had left the station, with the Ulster Unionists

:12:52. > :12:56.in the passenger seat. Yesterday I spoke to John McCallister and he

:12:56. > :13:06.denied that his comments amounted to an assault on Mike Nesbitt's

:13:06. > :13:09.

:13:09. > :13:14.Most of these events were in the process of organising before Mike

:13:14. > :13:20.Nesbitt became leader, so it is not a criticism of that, it is a

:13:20. > :13:23.warning that we are saying, look, there is a perception out there and

:13:23. > :13:28.the perception with commentators is that we could be heading down a

:13:28. > :13:31.certain route, which we are not. Obviously Mike Nesbitt thinks it is

:13:31. > :13:38.an attack on him and that is why he's sacked him.

:13:38. > :13:41.Yes, he was very swift to take that action against John McCallister. He

:13:41. > :13:47.said the leader had taken many complaints about the phrase,

:13:47. > :13:50.sleepwalking towards Unionist unity. John McCallister says he is

:13:50. > :13:55.disappointed about what has happened but recognises that Mike

:13:55. > :13:58.Nesbitt has the right to remove him from his position. We understand

:13:58. > :14:02.that John McCallister is standing down as health spokesman for the

:14:02. > :14:05.party, an act which I think shows he is disappointed about the way

:14:05. > :14:09.things have turned out. Still to come on the programme:

:14:09. > :14:19.Plucked from obscurity. Find out how this bunch of would-be actors

:14:19. > :14:23.

:14:23. > :14:27.A gang locked into a men in the backyard of a Newry bar last night

:14:27. > :14:33.and then said the building on fire. Today, the police said the men

:14:33. > :14:37.could have been seriously injured, and the pub was badly damaged in

:14:37. > :14:42.the arson attack. When the Fire and Rescue Service

:14:42. > :14:47.arrived, the bar was well ablaze. The damage is extensive. The roof

:14:47. > :14:52.is off and the interior is gone. The fire was started around 11:30pm.

:14:52. > :14:57.Four men forced the owner and other staff into the backyard, sprinkled

:14:57. > :15:03.petrol around the place and set it alight. A gang fled, leaving the

:15:03. > :15:06.staff to fend for themselves. have fire crews were met with a

:15:06. > :15:10.well-developed fire. They tried to gain access to the front of the

:15:10. > :15:15.premises and tried to gain access to the rear. They discovered there

:15:15. > :15:18.were two people trapped in the backyard. The fire crews got an

:15:18. > :15:23.extension ladder and rescued them, and got on with tackling the fire.

:15:23. > :15:26.The police are trying to establish a motive for the attack, which came

:15:26. > :15:31.after an earlier altercation involving some people who had been

:15:31. > :15:34.drinking there. One man who was in the bar last night said shortly

:15:35. > :15:38.before the arson attack, a number of people who had been drinking in

:15:38. > :15:42.the premises were asked to leave. As they did so, they did minor

:15:42. > :15:46.damage. They smashed a television and broke the front windows of the

:15:46. > :15:54.bar as they went out. It is still not known whether that is linked to

:15:54. > :16:00.the more serious incident which followed. For people to almost lose

:16:00. > :16:05.their lives as well as their livelihood, it is out reached -- it

:16:05. > :16:12.has Ardgrange the local community. Detectives said the earlier

:16:12. > :16:15.incident is a primary line of inquiry. The this is arson with

:16:15. > :16:19.intent to endanger life. There was a possibility that the staff could

:16:19. > :16:21.have been injured as a result of this. The staff members were taken

:16:21. > :16:28.to hospital, where they were treated for smoke inhalation and

:16:28. > :16:32.shock. The Assembly has voted against

:16:32. > :16:36.allowing gay people to get married in Northern Ireland. Plans are well

:16:36. > :16:39.advanced to legalise gay marriage in England, Scotland and Wales, but

:16:39. > :16:48.a proposal put forward by the Green Party and Sinn Fein to allow the

:16:48. > :16:51.same thing Kabul who was defeated. The vote was taken on a vast --

:16:51. > :16:55.cross-community basis and with the vast majority of Unionists against

:16:55. > :17:00.it, it failed. Members of the gay community held a demonstration

:17:00. > :17:03.today. Among those taking part were Maurice Dixon and Paul Finlay. They

:17:04. > :17:08.are having a settled partnership ceremony next year. They said they

:17:08. > :17:15.would like to be able to get married. I just want to be treated

:17:15. > :17:18.equally. I have always been brought up in a Christian family, and I do

:17:19. > :17:22.not want to feel I'm being discriminated against. I want to

:17:22. > :17:29.have the same relationship that my mum and dad had.

:17:29. > :17:34.With me is Jim Allister and John O'Doherty, from the Rainbow Project.

:17:34. > :17:37.Jim Allister, putting religious belief to the site, how concerned

:17:37. > :17:42.argued that the perception in Northern Ireland is now at on a

:17:42. > :17:46.moral issue, people do not have equal rights? In is not an issue of

:17:46. > :17:50.equality. This is not about equality, this is about perversion

:17:50. > :17:56.of marriage. Marriage is hysterically and accurately the

:17:56. > :18:00.union of one man and one woman. -- historically. This is an assault on

:18:00. > :18:05.that, to say that two men or two women can married. The ultimate

:18:05. > :18:10.logic of that position, if it is an equality position, is that if a man

:18:10. > :18:15.says, there are two people I love, I want to have a polygamous

:18:15. > :18:21.marriage, are we to say, equality, we have to let them do that? It is

:18:21. > :18:26.an absurd proposition to be quit the marriage of a man at a woman to

:18:26. > :18:32.the relationship of two men of the same sex. Why do gay people want to

:18:32. > :18:37.get married? Civil partnerships, we have about 100 every year? Once

:18:37. > :18:41.again, it is really damaging dangerous language in relation to

:18:41. > :18:45.gay people. The same arguments we have been hearing today, we heard

:18:45. > :18:49.around the introduction of civil partnerships. We heard it would

:18:49. > :18:53.lead to polygamy and the legalisation of bestiality. None of

:18:53. > :18:57.those things are reality. Gay people want equal marriage.

:18:57. > :19:00.Everybody wants equal marriage, wants to be treated equally. If we

:19:00. > :19:04.are tax payers an important members of the society and we want to be

:19:04. > :19:10.treated equally. Are partnerships should not be recognised as any

:19:10. > :19:15.different from those as the heterosexual committee. The other

:19:15. > :19:19.point that Jim makes about marriage is not true. Divorce was something

:19:19. > :19:24.was -- that was not always available. He is a religion and

:19:24. > :19:27.moral issues not separate from equality under law? I absolutely

:19:27. > :19:31.and emotion is clear. The motion called for the introduction of

:19:31. > :19:34.civil marriage for everyone at included protections for faith

:19:34. > :19:38.based organisations and religious groups to decide whether or not to

:19:38. > :19:42.hold the partnerships. We are going to be left behind by Scotland,

:19:42. > :19:49.Wales and England. We are going to be left behind and different from

:19:49. > :19:52.the rest of the United Kingdom if we keep our objections to a gay

:19:52. > :19:55.marriage. Legislators have to legislate in accordance with the

:19:55. > :20:00.morals and standards of the area they legislate for. It is quite

:20:00. > :20:03.clear that in Northern Ireland there is no appetite to change the

:20:03. > :20:10.fundamental description of marriage. And indeed throughout the world, it

:20:10. > :20:15.is very much a minority that have any concept of same-sex marriage.

:20:15. > :20:20.The European Court of Human Rights has ruled that it is not a breach

:20:20. > :20:26.of human rights to deny the same- sex marriage. So, we are on the

:20:26. > :20:28.firmest possible ground, but the best ground to be on it is to

:20:28. > :20:32.acknowledge the historical and important position of marriage as a

:20:32. > :20:36.union between one man and one woman. Even if there was cross-community

:20:36. > :20:40.support, this would not have gone through in the Assembly today. The

:20:40. > :20:44.politicians are representing the electorate and they are saying no.

:20:44. > :20:51.That is the negative coming out of today. I prefer to focus on the

:20:51. > :20:53.positives. This is the first time that LGBT issues have been

:20:53. > :20:59.discussed in the Northern Ireland Assembly. Do you think it might

:20:59. > :21:04.change? Absolutely. Almost 50% of MLAs voting today supported the

:21:04. > :21:07.motion. Jim, what do you think? do not think people will change

:21:07. > :21:13.their mind about issues of conscience and principle. If they

:21:13. > :21:19.do, they haven't got much principle. The vote today was 50 against, 454.

:21:19. > :21:25.I would have liked to have seen a bigger margin. It was a victory to

:21:25. > :21:29.defeat an absurd proposition. Earlier in the programme we were

:21:29. > :21:33.reminded of the winning heroics of Europe's office in a Ryder Cup.

:21:33. > :21:42.They were not the only team snatching a late victory at the

:21:42. > :21:46.weekend. Now, more on the sport. Derry's camogie players are

:21:46. > :21:48.celebrating an All-Ireland title. It looked as if they are replayed

:21:48. > :21:53.final against Galway might be slipping away from them but in the

:21:53. > :21:58.closing moments of the match, this late Karen Kielt goal helped Derry

:21:58. > :22:04.to a dramatic one-point win, sparking a great scenes of

:22:04. > :22:09.celebration. Karen Qaeda's heroics earned warm praise from the captain.

:22:09. > :22:15.-- Karen Qaeda's heroics. She is a fantastic player. Today, she scored

:22:15. > :22:20.a goal when we needed it. She gave us the margin to get in front.

:22:20. > :22:28.It was a poignant weekend for another GAA team. The Lisnaskea M
