:00:24. > :00:30.Good evening. Tonight... 11 bandsmen accused of playing

:00:30. > :00:34.sectarian music outside a Catholic Church are rested. An attack on a

:00:34. > :00:38.family is being treated as a hate crime. The computer glitch which

:00:38. > :00:43.has led to dozens our primary schools having problems with

:00:43. > :00:48.assessment tests. The planned bridge which is one step closer to

:00:48. > :00:54.a reality. A another European journey begins for Ulster rugby

:00:54. > :01:04.tonight. And there will be some scope for getting outdoors this

:01:04. > :01:08.weekend, especially tomorrow. I 11 bandsmen accused the plane

:01:08. > :01:13.contentious music outside a Catholic Church have been arrested.

:01:27. > :01:33.The young volunteers are filmed playing contentious dunes outside

:01:33. > :01:38.the church on Donegal Street. They are aged between 15 and 42 and have

:01:38. > :01:42.been arrested on suspicion of provocative conduct. They have been

:01:42. > :01:48.detained in North Belfast. Three others turned up at police stations

:02:04. > :02:12.from walking past this church. All 14 men have been released, pending

:02:12. > :02:18.a report into the Public A woman and her three children have

:02:18. > :02:23.been rescued from a fire at their home in Newtownards. Police think

:02:23. > :02:32.it was started deliberately and the basic might have been sectarian. A

:02:32. > :02:36.woman has been arrested on At around 2 o'clock this morning, a

:02:36. > :02:41.burning object was pushed through this letterbox. The owner was

:02:41. > :02:48.asleep at the time with her children. Ate well and seven-year-

:02:48. > :02:52.old daughters and two year-old son. They were risky -- two daughters

:02:52. > :02:55.and a two-year old son. They were rescued by fire officers. The

:02:55. > :03:03.family is shocked and cannot understand why they have been

:03:03. > :03:06.targeted. Absolutely disgusted. My children could have died in there.

:03:06. > :03:14.I would have lost two nieces a nephew and a system. Devastated and

:03:14. > :03:21.disgusted. I cannot believe how shallow and low people can be.

:03:21. > :03:26.house has been targeted twice in two weeks. A painting had been made

:03:26. > :03:30.on the wall of the house and on 6th October we had criminal damage with

:03:30. > :03:35.the car being damaged with paint and a windows smashed and then the

:03:35. > :03:40.incident last night. We could have had four fatalities here. This is a

:03:40. > :03:48.serious incident. I would ask the people behind this too pleased

:03:48. > :03:54.assessed. Community workers -- to stop. Anti-social behaviour has

:03:54. > :03:59.been discussed in the community. have had a lot of incidents. In a

:03:59. > :04:05.separate house again, a window was smashed and a man and woman and a

:04:05. > :04:10.young daughter that keep themselves to themselves and are a Protestant

:04:10. > :04:15.family. I do not think it is sectarian. I do not know what is

:04:15. > :04:19.behind it. The police are treating this attack and previous incidents

:04:19. > :04:29.as hate crimes and are investigating a possible sectarian

:04:29. > :04:29.

:04:29. > :04:33.Inquiry. They want anybody with any A doctor that examined the toddler

:04:33. > :04:40.Millie Martin just before she died has told the murder trial that he

:04:40. > :04:44.did not see any bruising. The child was taken to surgery by Rachel

:04:44. > :04:49.Martin, who stands accused of allowing her daughter's death in

:04:49. > :04:53.2009. Dr Torsten Jentsch treated burns on the child's finger and had

:04:53. > :04:58.no other cause for concern and said he did not see any marks on her

:04:58. > :05:05.face, or chest. The mother's part there has been charged with

:05:05. > :05:09.sexually abusing and murdering the child. -- partner. Dozens of

:05:09. > :05:13.schools have had to abandon assessment tests because of a

:05:13. > :05:17.computer system problem. These tests are designed to identify

:05:17. > :05:23.strengths and weaknesses in literacy and numeracy and are part

:05:23. > :05:27.of a project that cost the education department 170 million.

:05:27. > :05:32.For three weeks, computers have been crashing and freezing and some

:05:32. > :05:37.head teachers have branded the system a shambles. There was a time

:05:37. > :05:43.when examinations meant a pencil, paper and a rubber. But computers

:05:43. > :05:48.have taken over. These people's now have to undergo a statutory

:05:48. > :05:53.literacy and numeracy computer tests. Some teachers say the system

:05:53. > :05:56.is not working. Children are getting upset doing these tests.

:05:56. > :06:01.Younger children in particular did not understand why it is not

:06:01. > :06:07.working for them. With the technical end of things going wrong,

:06:07. > :06:11.we are not having any fees in the results. We as principles and

:06:11. > :06:16.teachers and as professionals are just very concerned that the thing

:06:16. > :06:22.was not trial for long enough and is not giving us accurate results.

:06:22. > :06:28.It is part of a 170 million contract with the technology

:06:28. > :06:35.company, C2K. The assessment is costing 400,000 per year. The

:06:35. > :06:40.minister is urging schools not to give up. We have got about 180

:06:40. > :06:45.schools still facing problems. If you are facing problems with the

:06:45. > :06:52.system, close the system down. Do not put your students and staff

:06:52. > :06:57.through any stress. Just stop. We will get it sorted and move on.

:06:57. > :07:04.unions say it is a shambles. have had problems with practice

:07:04. > :07:08.areas. Children have got problems starting their tests. Sometimes the

:07:08. > :07:12.system had frozen and sometimes the screen and volume were not working.

:07:12. > :07:18.It is shambolic. Teachers are supposed to teach their class. They

:07:18. > :07:23.would not even have known what was happening. C2K said so far

:07:23. > :07:27.investigations have not been conclusive. The problems have not

:07:27. > :07:31.been replicated in the classrooms that they have visited earlier this

:07:31. > :07:39.week but they said they would examine the computer program and

:07:39. > :07:44.said it remains committed to These computer problems have been

:07:44. > :07:52.attracting a lot of comments from parents and students online on

:07:52. > :08:02.Facebook. Join the debate... Coming up... Rush-hour. Trying to cope

:08:02. > :08:08.with traffic problems in rural A 63-year-old man has been jailed

:08:08. > :08:13.for one year for sexually assaulting a girl in Londonderry.

:08:13. > :08:20.James Gallagher admitted touching be 15-year-old in a sexual manner

:08:20. > :08:25.in July last year. He was ordered to sign the sex offenders' register.

:08:25. > :08:29.The NSPCC said parents should not be anxious about reports that there

:08:29. > :08:34.were four suspicious approach is made to children in County Antrim

:08:34. > :08:38.last week. The police were told of an alleged incident in and around

:08:38. > :08:43.the Rathcoole Estate in Newtownabbey. Neil Anderson from

:08:43. > :08:46.the charity set children abductions are very rare. Of course it is

:08:46. > :08:54.frightening when the stories are reported. But abductions are

:08:54. > :08:58.extremely rare. Abductions usually involve people that are well known

:08:58. > :09:02.to be children. The stranger danger message is important to remember

:09:02. > :09:07.but people should not panic about strangers tried to harm their

:09:07. > :09:13.children. Edwin Poots has described the opening of the first private

:09:13. > :09:16.abortion clinic as a necessary. The Health Minister said the service

:09:16. > :09:22.provided by the organisation is adequate for providing terminations

:09:23. > :09:30.within strict guidelines. The clinic, run by Mary Stakes is due

:09:30. > :09:35.to open next week. We have got genuine reasons for these concerns

:09:35. > :09:41.and they will be dealt with very sensitively. They will receive an

:09:41. > :09:45.appropriate care and follow-up. We have to carry out abortions but

:09:45. > :09:50.also of a proper follow-up care. We do not want people picking up the

:09:50. > :10:00.pieces afterwards. And you can watch that interview in full on

:10:00. > :10:10.Sunday Politics at 11:15am on BBC One. This is Newsline. Coming up, a

:10:10. > :10:11.

:10:11. > :10:15.piece of maritime history in Last week, we reported on the

:10:15. > :10:20.commuter chaos caused by a combination of faulty traffic

:10:20. > :10:23.lights and the introduction of bus lanes in Belfast city centre. Many

:10:23. > :10:29.people complained that the usual 20 minute journey was taking more than

:10:29. > :10:34.one hour. But for rural communities, using the car is often the only way

:10:34. > :10:41.of getting to work. Many people travel long distances and it can

:10:41. > :10:47.mean very early start. Julian Fowler joined some early commuters.

:10:47. > :10:54.Hitting the road early. It is 5:30am and Martina is on 0 way to

:10:54. > :11:02.work at Craig and hospital. -- this hospital. She spends a total of 12

:11:02. > :11:07.hours in her car. It is a job in County Fermanagh. That is the first

:11:07. > :11:13.recent. The second reason is that my husband's Business closed down.

:11:13. > :11:19.I am the only person working at the moment. At this time of day she has

:11:19. > :11:23.been rude to herself. Rush hour can be just -- the road to herself.

:11:24. > :11:28.Rush hour can be a frustrating. People have been waiting for 50

:11:28. > :11:32.years for a bypass to be built. They are still waiting. The

:11:32. > :11:38.proposed location for a bridge has been identified. But they have not

:11:38. > :11:45.got any money to build it. Is the bus and alternative to the car?

:11:45. > :11:49.Around a dozen commuters use the park and ride in this location.

:11:49. > :11:56.used to drive around for 2.5 hours every day. At first it was

:11:56. > :12:01.expensive. It is much easier on the bus. I can sit and read and sleep.

:12:01. > :12:06.What if you do not live near a bus route? A community transport scheme

:12:06. > :12:15.in fair manner connect isolated rural communities -- in County

:12:15. > :12:22.Fermanagh. It is terrific. People do not use it enough. This man uses

:12:22. > :12:28.a rural it to get to work. The cost has doubled to 60. But he says he

:12:28. > :12:34.has little choice. Both of us work and this was an option that has

:12:34. > :12:40.come to me. I could probably do it cheaper by car but unfortunately

:12:40. > :12:45.that is not an option because we just have one. This Primary School

:12:45. > :12:50.teacher has got an alternative way of getting around. For him, two

:12:50. > :12:56.wheels are better than four, even for a 50 mile round trip to the

:12:56. > :13:03.supermarket. I would cycle to work every day and into Enniskillen at

:13:03. > :13:07.the weekend for shopping. Then maybe go elsewhere for the day.

:13:07. > :13:17.8000 commute on a sunny day but when it is raining, at -- a

:13:17. > :13:26.

:13:26. > :13:29.pleasant commuter but at least he The Environment Minister has

:13:29. > :13:32.granted permission for a new cross- border bridge. The planned link

:13:32. > :13:35.would be a single lane cable bridge between Narrow Water near

:13:35. > :13:38.Warrenpoint in County Down and land close to Omeath in County Louth.

:13:38. > :13:41.Francis Gorman has been getting reaction in the area to a project

:13:41. > :13:46.which will cost around 15 million. It's been just a dream for decades.

:13:46. > :13:49.Now a bridge at Narrow Water is one step closer to becoming a reality.

:13:49. > :13:57.The hope is that it will create jobs boost tourism and act as a

:13:57. > :14:02.gateway between the Mournes and the Cooley Mountains. Not only from the

:14:02. > :14:06.South but also for foreign visitors and people from the UK who go to

:14:06. > :14:12.Dublin airport and they have this link to come into the heart of the

:14:12. > :14:20.Mourne Mountains. The application to build the bridge was made by

:14:20. > :14:24.Louth County Council. It will be paid for by money from Europe.

:14:24. > :14:28.Tourist Board in Ireland have produced figures that indicates up

:14:28. > :14:32.to 250 jobs will be created around Carlingford Lough as a result of

:14:32. > :14:36.this and in addition, it will bring two committees that are

:14:36. > :14:42.geographically very close but separated by a the lough, they will

:14:42. > :14:47.be brought together. This link will mean they no longer will look

:14:47. > :14:51.across the water to each other. Abridge can only be built if

:14:51. > :14:53.planning permission is also granted in the south and today, the

:14:54. > :15:03.southern planning board said it will make an announcement in the

:15:03. > :15:07.coming days. It is a big night of sport and we will look forward to

:15:07. > :15:13.the soccer clash in Dublin but first, the Ulster rugby team have

:15:13. > :15:16.got French visitors tonight. Austin O'Callaghan? Ulster start a new

:15:16. > :15:21.Heineken Cup campaign tonight at home to Castres in their opening

:15:21. > :15:25.pool game of the prestigious European club competition. Last

:15:25. > :15:27.season, Ulster made the final only to lose to Leinster. But just 24

:15:27. > :15:32.hours after, our cameras captured these images of Stephen Ferris in

:15:32. > :15:35.pain during training. We understand there are doubts emerging that he

:15:35. > :15:43.will actually be fit to play in the number eight shirt at Ravenhill

:15:44. > :15:48.tonight. The starting lineup will be confirmed by 7pm. If we get

:15:48. > :15:50.confirmation, we will let you know. With or without Ferris, Mark

:15:50. > :15:53.Anscombe's side look well set for another challenge for the Heineken

:15:53. > :15:59.Cup. They approach tonight's match unbeaten in five domestic games.

:15:59. > :16:03.Gavin Andrews reports. It Paddy Jackson is averaging almost 10

:16:03. > :16:08.points each game this season, putting in extra hours of practice

:16:08. > :16:18.every week and that is paying off. And this is how accurate the

:16:18. > :16:18.

:16:18. > :16:23.This trick shot at training that even Ruan Pienaar could not

:16:23. > :16:26.replicate. One of the stars of the southern hemisphere is back from

:16:26. > :16:32.international duty. He joins up with the only undefeated team in

:16:32. > :16:38.the northern hemisphere this season. It is exciting. The boys are world

:16:38. > :16:44.class, we have seen that over the next -- last few years. They guys

:16:44. > :16:53.we have had have done a great job. We have been doing our homework on

:16:54. > :16:56.the opponents. At this stage of the Heineken Cup, it's certainly brings

:16:56. > :17:03.us to the biggest stage and a bigger challenge. One that

:17:03. > :17:08.everybody should be excited about. And the form this season has

:17:08. > :17:14.thrilled supporters. Add that to last year's Heineken Cup place and

:17:14. > :17:20.expectations are higher than ever. Tom IBO will be ecstatic!

:17:20. > :17:24.understand why people think we are in this match for progression. That

:17:24. > :17:29.is what they expect and that is grand. That is what we will try to

:17:29. > :17:33.do but it does not always work out that way. We have such a great

:17:33. > :17:37.competition and you need some luck as well as being a great team.

:17:37. > :17:42.a kicker that can do this, anything is possible. Live coverage is on

:17:42. > :17:45.BBC Radio Ulster medium wave from 7:30pm. To Dublin next, where the

:17:45. > :17:48.Republic of Ireland play Germany in a World Cup qualifier in one hour.

:17:48. > :17:58.The game is a sell-out. From the Aviva Stadium, here's Thomas

:17:58. > :18:00.

:18:00. > :18:05.Niblock. A Etihad the problems Giovanni Trappatoni has, you would

:18:05. > :18:08.be animated also. The key word is injury. Robbie Keane failed a

:18:09. > :18:16.fitness test yesterday and Richard Dunne is injured along with Kevin

:18:16. > :18:21.Doyle. James Maclean, injured. Sean St Leger, that's right, injured.

:18:21. > :18:25.Ken Whelan? You can catch my drift. It's not just the injuries that

:18:25. > :18:29.makes tonight's game seemed like mission impossible. It is also

:18:29. > :18:36.history because Germany have never lost a World Cup qualifier away

:18:36. > :18:40.from home, but there is always a first time. You have to believe. He

:18:40. > :18:48.has been in this game long enough to know that anything is possible

:18:48. > :18:51.in football. 11 against 11. We are not playing 11 supermen. It is 10

:18:51. > :18:58.years since Robbie Keane snatched his last-minute equaliser against

:18:58. > :19:02.the Germans. And tonight's captain, John O'Shea, believes a similar

:19:02. > :19:08.result is possible. It is tough against Germany, no matter what

:19:09. > :19:14.combination you play. But we have done good work this week. Everybody

:19:14. > :19:19.was disappointed after the euros. It was important to get that out of

:19:19. > :19:23.everybody's system. Those wins against Kazakhstan and a man, that

:19:23. > :19:29.was good for us so hopefully we can keep going and continue into this

:19:29. > :19:33.game against Germany. They have great players but you can never

:19:33. > :19:37.write us off. We will always have a chance. The star studded German

:19:37. > :19:44.team trained in Dublin last night and you get the feeling the

:19:44. > :19:49.Republic would settle for a score line similar to this. Northern

:19:49. > :19:53.Ireland do not play until Tuesday but Portugal have lost one - zero

:19:53. > :19:56.this afternoon to Russia. Donegal Celtic's new manager, Declan

:19:56. > :19:58.McGreevy, is in charge for the first time tomorrow in a crucial

:19:58. > :20:01.Irish Premiership bottom of the table clash with fellow strugglers

:20:01. > :20:04.Lisburn Distillery. The two sides currently prop up the table, adrift

:20:04. > :20:11.from the rest, but McGreevy insists the outlook is still positive for

:20:12. > :20:16.Celtic this season. I think our scored this season has been very

:20:16. > :20:22.unfortunate. They aren't a good team up and they have not had the

:20:22. > :20:26.luck of the green but they are a quality Premiership team. We play

:20:26. > :20:29.Portadown in our own park. We played Linfield for 30 minutes and

:20:29. > :20:35.had an injury to one of our key players and that disrupted us. It

:20:35. > :20:38.is just giving us believe that we can compete at this level. Each

:20:38. > :20:42.person is a Premier League footballer and that is my job, to

:20:42. > :20:48.make them believe that. Stay in Furness has definitely been ruled

:20:48. > :20:54.out of tonight's match against Castro. This place has been taken

:20:54. > :20:56.by Mike McComish. The search is underway for the BBC's Unsung Hero

:20:56. > :20:59.in Sport for 2012. It's an opportunity for you to nominate

:20:59. > :21:02.somebody you know who coaches, administers or organises clubs in

:21:02. > :21:06.their free time for no reward except the enjoyment of seeing

:21:07. > :21:11.sport flourish in their communities. Mark Sidebottom has more. The

:21:11. > :21:14.Olympic rower who has become a hero to many but Alan Campbell is quick

:21:14. > :21:19.to point out that performing on a global stage might not have

:21:19. > :21:25.happened had it not been for his own Unsung Hero, his first coach,

:21:25. > :21:30.Bobby Platt, now 93. When I met 10 he started to grow the passion for

:21:30. > :21:35.the sport inside me. All of us that were there. I just remember how

:21:35. > :21:39.exciting it was when I first started out, it taught me a lot

:21:39. > :21:43.about self discipline and determination and respect. A body

:21:43. > :21:49.was really instrumental in instilling those values in all of

:21:49. > :21:53.us. If it had not been for him at that point, I do not think I would

:21:53. > :22:00.be able to have taken the sport to the level I have. Does your club or

:22:00. > :22:06.a team have a similar person? They must administer or coach for no

:22:06. > :22:10.financial reward. Please nominate online. The closing date is the end

:22:10. > :22:13.of October. The winner will be invited to this year's BBC sports

:22:13. > :22:19.Personality of the Year Awards in December. I am sure there will be

:22:19. > :22:23.lots of candidates. Somebody who watches the kit or makes the tea?

:22:33. > :22:36.Campaigners have been savouring victory in a battle to keep an

:22:36. > :22:40.historic warship in Belfast. It had been feared HMS Caroline might

:22:40. > :22:43.leave these shores. But not any more, thanks to a heritage fund

:22:43. > :22:48.repair grant and an agreement with the National Museum of the Royal

:22:48. > :22:54.Navy. Julian O'Neill has the story. Rusting and out of sight, the
