:00:21. > :00:25.Good evening. The headlines on BBC Newsline. A bomb close to a police

:00:26. > :00:29.officer's home in Omagh - it's described as crude but viable. A

:00:29. > :00:33.burned-out car in South Armagh - a possible link to the murder of a

:00:33. > :00:39.Garda detective. Not in Northern Ireland - nationalists block a new

:00:39. > :00:45.agency labelled the British FBI. The deaths of three family members

:00:45. > :00:53.in a slurry pit - a sister gives evidence at the inquest. Also on

:00:53. > :00:56.the programme tonight. A triumphant homecoming - Liam Neeson receives

:00:56. > :01:02.the freedom of Ballymena. Cliftonville's footballers win

:01:02. > :01:05.their first trophy of the season - but how many more to come? And a

:01:05. > :01:15.bit milder through the next 24 hours but there's more wet and

:01:15. > :01:18.

:01:18. > :01:23.Detectives are still trying to establish who left a pipebomb close

:01:23. > :01:26.to the home of a police officer in Omagh on Friday. It's thought

:01:26. > :01:28.dissident republicans are just one of their lines of inquiry. The bomb

:01:28. > :01:33.was discovered after the officer, who saw two people acting

:01:33. > :01:39.suspiciously, fired a shot at his house on Kevlin Road. Julian Fowler

:01:39. > :01:47.reports from Omagh. A quiet residential area of Omagh on a wet

:01:47. > :01:50.Monday morning. Little appeared out of the ordinary today. But the

:01:50. > :01:53.events of the weekend have sent shockwaves through this community.

:01:53. > :01:56.On Friday night a police officer fired shots during an incident at

:01:56. > :01:59.his home. It has been reported that the officer saw two men acting

:01:59. > :02:02.suspiciously at the back of his house. During follow-up searches on

:02:02. > :02:08.Saturday a pipebomb, described by the police as a crude viable

:02:08. > :02:15.explosive device, was found close to the house. Neighbours were

:02:16. > :02:20.evacuated while it was made safe. It is understood the officer was no

:02:20. > :02:26.longer living in the house but had returned to carry out repairs. That

:02:26. > :02:30.has led to concerns that he was being specifically targeted. I was

:02:30. > :02:36.considering perhaps returning to that house and the situation was he

:02:36. > :02:38.was in that house in September and somebody was targeting him.

:02:38. > :02:41.police have not released any details about what happened. But

:02:41. > :02:44.they have appealed for anyone who saw suspicious activity in the

:02:44. > :02:47.Kevlin Road area between 8:00pm and midnight on Friday night to contact

:02:47. > :02:52.them. It is understood detectives are keeping an open mind about who

:02:52. > :02:58.may have been responsible. Dissident republicans are thought

:02:58. > :03:00.to be just one of a number of lines of inquiry. Gardai suspect a cross-

:03:00. > :03:05.border gang was involved in killing Detective Adrian Donohoe in County

:03:06. > :03:09.Louth on Friday. A burnt-out car which they may have used is being

:03:09. > :03:12.examined near Keady in South Armagh. Detective Donohoe was shot in the

:03:12. > :03:15.head as he and a colleague waited to escort a cash delivery from a

:03:15. > :03:25.Credit Union at Bellurgan near Dundalk. Gordon Adair has the

:03:25. > :03:27.

:03:27. > :03:30.latest on the murder investigation. Is this remote forest were a gang

:03:31. > :03:37.of killers fled to on Friday evening? The police think so and

:03:37. > :03:45.that this was the getaway car. It is too early to say just who made

:03:45. > :03:51.up this kind. Idea out on to prejudge but this is an act by a

:03:51. > :03:55.group of criminal terrorists flying the tricolour for convenience or is

:03:55. > :04:01.this a group of organised or disorganised criminals hell-bent on

:04:01. > :04:05.financial gain. Thus more credit union is probably something like

:04:05. > :04:09.half a mile further down this road and I have just driven from it and

:04:09. > :04:14.on either side of the road you can see whether hedges had been pulled

:04:14. > :04:21.out by Garda search teams hunting for clues. We know a little more

:04:21. > :04:26.about what happened on Friday night. It seems detective will Donna Hay

:04:26. > :04:30.and his colleague were collecting cash. When they arrived at the

:04:30. > :04:33.Credit Union, the answer to the car-park was blocked by a vehicle.

:04:33. > :04:38.Detective Donoghoe got out to see what was happening and without

:04:38. > :04:43.warning, was shot in the head. We know that the gang was at least

:04:43. > :04:46.five strong and they were armed with a shotgun, had gone, hammers

:04:46. > :04:52.and were masked and wearing tracksuits. It is understood the

:04:52. > :04:59.gang escaped with something like 4000 Euro but left behind as much

:04:59. > :05:04.as 40,000. Today, the detective, a member of his local GAA club, was

:05:04. > :05:10.hailed as a hero who died protecting neighbours. He could not

:05:10. > :05:15.even describe it. It has been like this since the news broke on Friday.

:05:15. > :05:20.It is just... There are no worse. There never will be. Adrian one

:05:20. > :05:24.never be forgotten her. Trying to come to terms with it. You have

:05:24. > :05:30.children that he coached and mentored and you're trying to tell

:05:30. > :05:34.the child what is going on when you don't understand yourself. We will

:05:34. > :05:40.remember him, we will have fond memories of him and what he did

:05:40. > :05:49.with his precious time. The this evening, Gardai are expected to

:05:49. > :05:52.interview his colleague and staff from the Credit Union. A new

:05:52. > :05:56.policing agency described as the British FBI won't be able to

:05:56. > :05:59.operate in Northern Ireland in the same way as the rest of the UK.

:05:59. > :06:02.Sinn Fein and the SDLP have blocked a move to give the National Crime

:06:02. > :06:04.Agency the powers to carry out police operations and recruit

:06:04. > :06:14.agents. The Justice Minister says the move is a mistake. Vincent

:06:14. > :06:21.Kearney reports. Dutch police prepared to carry out a raid on a

:06:21. > :06:26.flat in Amsterdam. A man insiders British and local police are

:06:26. > :06:31.working with the British serious organised crime agency. That agency

:06:31. > :06:35.is being replaced with the more powerful new body, the National

:06:35. > :06:39.Crime Agency. Described as the British equivalent of the FBI, it

:06:39. > :06:45.will target gangs operating across local, national and international

:06:45. > :06:49.borders. Its head, Keith Bristow, is seen here with the Home

:06:49. > :06:54.Secretary. He will be directly accountable to her for the agency's

:06:54. > :06:59.actions. Not to the Chief Constable of the PSNI, the Policing Board or

:06:59. > :07:02.the Police Ombudsman. Many of the powers being given have been

:07:02. > :07:07.devolved to the Assembly, so it has to agree to give Westminster

:07:07. > :07:12.authority to exercise those powers. They include officers being given

:07:12. > :07:17.the powers of a police constable in Northern Ireland. The authority to

:07:17. > :07:22.carry out searches and make arrests and the ability to crew docked --

:07:22. > :07:26.conduct surveillance and recruit informers. The agency would also be

:07:26. > :07:30.responsible for recovering assets from criminals. But Sinn Fein and

:07:30. > :07:35.the SDLP have refused to support the move, which means the powers

:07:35. > :07:39.will not be extended to Northern Ireland. Justice Minister David

:07:39. > :07:44.Ford says he believes blocking the legislation is a mistake that could

:07:44. > :07:48.have serious implications for the police. There is a real danger that

:07:48. > :07:52.if this does not go ahead, there will be a significant cost to the

:07:52. > :07:56.police and terms of time and finances and we will have an

:07:56. > :08:00.inferior response to the serious crime that we face. Sinn Fein says

:08:00. > :08:04.approving legislation would undermine devolved policing and

:08:04. > :08:09.justice powers. But the DUP has accused the party of playing

:08:09. > :08:15.politics with policing. National Crime Agency was set up to

:08:15. > :08:19.do with pornography, sex crimes, the transit of prostitutes, the

:08:19. > :08:23.transit of illegal fuel, to deal with international aid based

:08:23. > :08:29.criminality. Why would anyone want to be on the wrong side of that

:08:29. > :08:33.argument and stop Corporation across this island? It is right to

:08:33. > :08:38.block this because we have gone through arduous my decisions to

:08:38. > :08:43.have Policing and Justice powers devolved here. Westminster are

:08:43. > :08:48.trying to take his powers away now, when what we want is to assert the

:08:48. > :08:51.primacy of the Executive and assembly. The police are understood

:08:51. > :08:56.to share the concerns of David Ford about the implications of this

:08:56. > :08:59.decision. The PSNI has warned repeatedly that Northern Ireland is

:08:59. > :09:04.increasingly being targeted by international crime gangs operating

:09:04. > :09:08.on a global scale. Police co- operation with the NCA, they

:09:08. > :09:11.believe, is essential to combat those activities. An inquest has

:09:11. > :09:13.been told of the desperate attempts made to save three members of the

:09:13. > :09:17.Spence family who died in an underground slurry pit last

:09:17. > :09:23.September. The father and two sons were killed after one of them tried

:09:23. > :09:25.to rescue a dog on their farm near Hillsborough. A sister of the

:09:25. > :09:29.brothers has been giving evidence at today's hearing, as Claire

:09:29. > :09:31.Savage reports. On that fateful Saturday evening on the 15th of

:09:31. > :09:37.September, just after 6:00pm, farmer Noel Spence, who had been

:09:37. > :09:40.spreading slurry that day, said a dog had gone into the slurry tank.

:09:40. > :09:47.His eldest son, Graham, went down a ladder, through a manhole into the

:09:47. > :09:50.pit, which was four foot deep in slurry. He briefly called for the

:09:50. > :09:59.dog, an old Collie called Jill, and as he went back up the ladder, near

:09:59. > :10:02.the top, he lost consciousness and fell into the tank. Nevin went in

:10:02. > :10:07.after him and was also succumbed by the slurry fumes. Noel tried to

:10:07. > :10:10.save his two sons but he same fate befell him. The emergency services

:10:10. > :10:16.were called and friends, neighbours and family members, including

:10:16. > :10:20.Noel's wife, Essie, all tried to get the men out of the tank. Emma

:10:20. > :10:23.then went into the pit and managed to pull her father out. She then

:10:23. > :10:27.went back in and passed out holding onto her brother, Graham. A

:10:27. > :10:33.neighbour rescued her. Noel and Nevin were pronounced dead at the

:10:33. > :10:41.scene and Graham at the hospital. After Emma's statement was read out,

:10:41. > :10:45.the coroner, John Leckey, asked her how her health was. She said she

:10:45. > :10:48.suffered pains but as her father used to say, they are far from her

:10:48. > :10:51.heart. He asked her did she realise how dangerous her actions were. She

:10:51. > :10:54.replied yes. But when it comes to the love of your family. Emma's mum,

:10:54. > :10:56.Ismy, sister, Laura, and Graham's wife, Andrea, were there for the

:10:57. > :11:02.hearing, which also heard evidence from members of the emergency

:11:02. > :11:12.services. Mr Leckey commended all those who tried to help save the

:11:12. > :11:12.

:11:12. > :11:19.men for their bravery. The inquest is due to finish tomorrow. Lots

:11:19. > :11:24.more to come on BBC Newsline this evening. A report from Ballymena...

:11:24. > :11:28.The red carpet has been rolled out in Ballymena for the visit of the

:11:28. > :11:34.town's most famous son. I will have all the details on this very

:11:34. > :11:40.special award later. It will soon be a decade since disability

:11:40. > :11:43.legislation came into force. But it appears it has failed to deliver

:11:43. > :11:45.all that was hoped for. While new buildings must incorporate

:11:45. > :11:52.wheelchair access, there are still many areas where people with a

:11:52. > :12:01.disability face great difficulties. Mervyn Jess has met a man in County

:12:01. > :12:06.Down trying to deal with something that for others is routine. Nobody

:12:06. > :12:11.likes going out in the wind and rain. But Michael Hohnen has little

:12:11. > :12:15.choice. He needs to lodge money in his local bank. But it's not that

:12:15. > :12:20.simple. Michael suffers from motor neurone disease and needs a

:12:20. > :12:25.wheelchair to get about. I would like to visit the branch today so I

:12:25. > :12:33.would like them to blot out the disabled ramp. His dearest bank has

:12:33. > :12:39.no prominent Major axis. 2pm will be fine. -- wheelchair access.

:12:39. > :12:42.has switched to another bank which involves a 26 mile round trip to

:12:42. > :12:47.for side and back. Today, after requesting the portable ramp be

:12:47. > :12:52.placed outside, he went along to the Saintfield branch three miles

:12:52. > :12:57.down the road but when he got there... No ramp. He had a similar

:12:57. > :13:02.experience in Maghera recently sold for the second time, he has to do

:13:02. > :13:06.is banking on the street. She just said they were not given the

:13:06. > :13:10.message that I was coming and she was happy to get the ramp out but

:13:10. > :13:15.it would be easier if I could write my details on the back and do the

:13:15. > :13:19.lodgment. Disability laws will Marquand decade on the statute

:13:19. > :13:23.books this year and there have been big improvements in certain areas

:13:23. > :13:28.but there is lot of work to do. example, if somebody without a

:13:28. > :13:31.disability did not think it was OK to come out the back door past the

:13:31. > :13:36.bends, therefore you should not ask someone with a disability to do

:13:36. > :13:41.that. Having experienced being fully active and being in a wager,

:13:41. > :13:45.I am determined that someone should here of the difficulties that we

:13:46. > :13:50.have. Danske Bank says it is committed to improving

:13:50. > :13:56.accessibility of its premises, stating the vast majority of badges

:13:56. > :13:59.and the head office or already compliant. However, the bank also

:13:59. > :14:02.points out that the work required to make each location wheelchair

:14:02. > :14:08.accessible varies from place to place and in some cases planning

:14:08. > :14:10.permission is required. Some other news in brief now. Police in

:14:10. > :14:19.Londonderry are investigating arson attacks on vans owned by the

:14:19. > :14:21.property maintenance company Omega. Three vehicles were burnt outside

:14:21. > :14:24.private homes after workers began removing graffiti from the Derry

:14:24. > :14:26.walls overlooking the Bogside. Sinn Fein claim dissident republicans

:14:26. > :14:31.threatened the workers. They've called on those responsible to

:14:31. > :14:34.explain their actions to the wider community. The actor Stephen Rea

:14:34. > :14:39.has carried the coffin of his ex- wife, Dolours Price, at her funeral

:14:39. > :14:44.in West Belfast. Price, who was jailed for her part in the IRA

:14:44. > :14:47.bombing of the Old Bailey in 1973, died on Wednesday. The police have

:14:47. > :14:53.been involved in a legal process in the United States to seize

:14:53. > :14:59.interviews she gave about her time in the IRA. Among the mourners

:14:59. > :15:03.today was the prominent dissident republican Colin Duffy. Last week

:15:03. > :15:09.on the programme we introduced you to David Haddock, who has had seven

:15:09. > :15:12.operations cancelled in seven months. When he was a child, a

:15:12. > :15:16.house fire which killed his mother and grandmother left the Belfast

:15:16. > :15:20.man severely burned. He also has learning difficulties. There were

:15:20. > :15:30.developments after his story was broadcast on Newsline. Marie-Louise

:15:30. > :15:34.Connolly has the update. David Haddock's hospital bag has been

:15:34. > :15:37.packed and ready to go since August. But since then his operation has

:15:37. > :15:41.been cancelled seven times after more urgent cases were given his

:15:41. > :15:51.hospital bed. But after the BBC broadcast his story on Thursday,

:15:51. > :15:53.

:15:53. > :16:03.the following day the operation was rescheduled for a week's time.

:16:03. > :16:06.

:16:06. > :16:08.was good news. I had a phone call Last week the family revealed

:16:08. > :16:17.numerous letters from the Belfast Trust which scheduled operations

:16:17. > :16:21.and were later cancelled. David has had a hard time. When he was three

:16:21. > :16:23.years old he was involved in a house fire which killed his mum,

:16:23. > :16:26.granny and left him severely burned and disfigured. As well as

:16:26. > :16:35.reshaping his face, he's hoping the operation will ease some of his

:16:36. > :16:38.pain. My nose and my lips and my cheek. While some members of the

:16:38. > :16:47.family welcome the news, others remain sceptical that it will

:16:47. > :16:51.actually go ahead on Thursday. though the hospital has reassured

:16:51. > :16:55.may that this isn't going to happen because this was ordered by the

:16:55. > :16:58.management, I still have the back of my mind that the call welcome.

:16:58. > :17:00.While the Health Board says the number of operations cancelled last

:17:00. > :17:03.year represents around 1.4% of all operations performed here,

:17:03. > :17:05.according to David's family, no one, let alone someone with learning

:17:05. > :17:15.difficulties, should have to experience that disappointment

:17:15. > :17:15.

:17:15. > :17:19.seven times. We'll let you know how David gets on. Now to Liam Neeson,

:17:19. > :17:24.a man used to receiving international movie awards. Today

:17:24. > :17:29.he received an unusual honour. I don't know if he has any sheep but

:17:29. > :17:32.he's now allowed to drive a flock through his hometown of Ballymena.

:17:32. > :17:37.It's one of the privileges bestowed on him today along with the freedom

:17:37. > :17:39.of the town. And, as you would expect with a Hollywood star, there

:17:39. > :17:46.was plenty of flash photography at the ceremony. Our reporter Natasha

:17:46. > :17:51.Sayee was there for BBC Newsline. The centre is buzzing at the town's

:17:51. > :17:57.most famous son celebrates his award. He says he is privileged and

:17:57. > :18:00.will always be mad to 9.9% Ballymena. That comment will have

:18:01. > :18:06.thrilled the hundreds of fans who gathered outside in the cold to

:18:06. > :18:11.catch a glimpse of the actor known fondly as the big man. They queued

:18:11. > :18:17.from early this morning to see that Ballymena boy turned superstar.

:18:17. > :18:23.This is a chance to get to see him. We have been in Ballymena sense 8

:18:23. > :18:31.o'clock in the morning. We would have been here no match of the

:18:31. > :18:37.weather. The Oscar nominee known best for his roles as Oscar show

:18:37. > :18:42.under, Rob Roy and the action hero in the taken movies has inspired

:18:42. > :18:46.actors around the world, not least those from his old school.

:18:46. > :18:50.naturalism he brings to characters and high real he can get into the

:18:51. > :18:57.character, you know the difference between him and the actor -- and

:18:57. > :19:03.the character. He came from such a small town and to become so just --

:19:03. > :19:06.such a big star, that is amazing. A-day and celebration and the

:19:06. > :19:11.stature as Liam Neeson received the accolade from his former bus at the

:19:11. > :19:15.Guinness factory where he wants worked. Another wonderful day for

:19:15. > :19:21.Ballymena, one that has focused the eyes of the world's media on us for

:19:21. > :19:26.the right reasons. We applaud too, be where she continued success and

:19:26. > :19:31.they will enjoy watching you grow from strength to strength and to

:19:31. > :19:35.quote a very well-known actor, may the Force be with you. Now a proud

:19:35. > :19:40.Freeman of the burner, he said he would use this to a bit to promote

:19:40. > :19:45.his home town. I am aware of the work the area has been doing.

:19:45. > :19:51.Coming out of the dark as, as we all have, and hopefully we have

:19:51. > :19:55.left that behind us. These are new days, New Times, and I am just

:19:55. > :20:00.privileged to receive this. In the past few weeks we have seen some

:20:01. > :20:06.pretty negative issues -- images of Northern Ireland. How do you feel?

:20:06. > :20:11.I have seen very little in the American press. The images I have

:20:11. > :20:20.seen, there are always a few cowboys and it seems to be very

:20:20. > :20:26.content. You know? The people of Northern Ireland's have voted 100%

:20:26. > :20:32.for pace and it is going to happen. What does it mean for the new free

:20:32. > :20:37.man to be born in Ballymena? In a very fundamental way, I have a work

:20:37. > :20:45.ethic that I got from Ballymena. From the people, from my teachers.

:20:45. > :20:47.PJ included. I am very proud of that. After accepting the award,

:20:47. > :20:52.the movie-star was treated to a special dinner which he enjoyed

:20:52. > :20:56.with local dignitaries, family and friends. As the celebrations wrap

:20:56. > :21:01.up, it is at clear Way and Liam Neeson a return home again. He has

:21:01. > :21:05.said he would like to go back to Belfast and tread the boards at the
