:01:05. > :01:15.And there may be some rain around this evening but a better day is on
:01:15. > :01:17.the way tomorrow. I'll have the details shortly. Food tests by
:01:17. > :01:21.Queen's University for BBC Newsline have revealed that while beef
:01:21. > :01:26.samples were found to be free from horse meat, there is an issue with
:01:26. > :01:32.some fish products being sold locally. Items sold and priced as
:01:32. > :01:36.being cod were actually not that species at all. That has prompted an
:01:36. > :01:41.expert to say it is another example of the integrity of the food chain
:01:41. > :01:49.being shown to be sub-standard. Our business correspondent has been
:01:49. > :01:52.looking at all this. Should we be worried? Let's say straightaway the
:01:52. > :01:55.tests we asked Queen's to carry out did not raise any food safety issue
:01:55. > :02:00.whatsoever. We want to be absolutely clear about that. No safety food
:02:00. > :02:08.issue. What we ran here was a simple snapshot consumer test, prompted by
:02:08. > :02:14.the headlines and fall-out from the horse meat scandal. We thought we'd
:02:14. > :02:18.try to gauge the bone fides of what was on some of our shelves. The
:02:18. > :02:24.sample size in our survey was relatively small, but the results
:02:24. > :02:29.did pose some big questions. This is one of the food labs at Queens
:02:29. > :02:35.University. It is where we had scientists running a series of
:02:35. > :02:41.tests. First, we wanted to know about beef. We bought ten different
:02:41. > :02:45.products, like mints and burgers, at random from different supermarkets
:02:45. > :02:53.and smaller shops, and asked Queens to check for any traces of coarse
:02:53. > :02:59.meet. We found absolutely no trace of contamination. In consultation
:02:59. > :03:05.with experts, we also decided to examine processed lamb for any cross
:03:05. > :03:12.contamination with pork. Again, it was all clear. But when we tested
:03:12. > :03:18.the card, the results were more eye-catching. -- tested cod. Again,
:03:18. > :03:25.we had purchased ten different items at random. Each packet was clearly
:03:25. > :03:31.labeled as a cod. But tests found that two of our ten samples
:03:31. > :03:38.contained no cod. The first ting people ask for, does it have an
:03:38. > :03:44.impact on safety? It does not. -- the first things. You are getting a
:03:44. > :03:49.little value fish. The whole industry has to take this area
:03:49. > :03:56.seriously, because it is another example of the integrity of the food
:03:56. > :04:01.supply chain being shown to be substandard. We shared our results
:04:01. > :04:07.with the representative of many of the larger shops, who have upped
:04:07. > :04:13.their testing regimes in the wake of the horse meat scandal. Anything
:04:13. > :04:18.that is a food labeling issue concerns me. Can people be assured
:04:18. > :04:22.that tests have been done on fish products just like I have been done
:04:22. > :04:28.on beef products? Are you only reacting after evidence
:04:28. > :04:32.materializes? We have a series of testing, otherwise he would not be
:04:32. > :04:35.able to tell the consumer what species of fish they are buying. If
:04:35. > :04:40.you are telling me there are problems that have been identified,
:04:40. > :04:46.that is where we will stand up to the plate. We'll try and restore
:04:46. > :04:50.that consumer confidence. What we find is supported by more
:04:50. > :04:53.comprehensive research studies worldwide. It is being referred to
:04:53. > :05:03.as fish fraud, and it is a global issue which has landed on our
:05:03. > :05:05.
:05:05. > :05:15.shores. With me is Gerry McCurdy from the Foods Standards Agency. How
:05:15. > :05:15.
:05:15. > :05:19.alarmed are you about these tests? would not use the word alarmed. I am
:05:19. > :05:23.surprised that the suppliers have not been able to demonstrate the
:05:23. > :05:30.authenticity of the products that they have put on the market and
:05:30. > :05:39.consumers are being misled once again. Do you call it fish fraud?
:05:39. > :05:45.Anything that misleads the consumer can be called a fraudulent activity.
:05:45. > :05:54.It is unacceptable. How often do you test fish products? Let's be clear
:05:54. > :06:01.about to does the testing and who does the enforcing on this. District
:06:01. > :06:06.councils have a sampling programme, and around 2500 samples of food are
:06:06. > :06:11.sampled each year. Not all of them are fish, but a proportion of them
:06:11. > :06:15.are. On occasions, we do get evidence of substitution, and the
:06:15. > :06:20.District Council and environmental health departments follow up on
:06:20. > :06:26.that. Do you think the checking out is rigorous enough? The Foods
:06:26. > :06:30.Standards Agency will monitor the system along with police, but it is
:06:30. > :06:35.the responsibility of the business operators to ensure that the
:06:35. > :06:42.products they put on the market are safe, packaged and labeled
:06:42. > :06:49.properly, said that consumers are not misled. -- so that consumers are
:06:49. > :06:52.not misled. Thank you for joining us this evening. A controversial peace
:06:52. > :06:59.and conflict resolution centre at the former Maze Prison site has been
:06:59. > :07:02.given the go ahead by planners. There have been years of political

:07:08. > :07:13.the DUP saying they will have a veto on what will be seen at the centre.
:07:13. > :07:18.The walls came down at the Maze at some time ago. Now, the 350 acres of

:07:48. > :07:53.was granted today. It is a significant milestone, but it is not
:07:53. > :07:58.the end of the political wrangling. Questions remain. Exactly how will
:07:58. > :08:08.the H block be presented? What about tourists who will be involved? What

:08:30. > :08:37.have always said that those who are making history with us, those people

:08:42. > :08:47.are clear that what ever happens, it will not be about Laura fighting

:09:21. > :09:27.it would be a good thing. We are French and we just know a little.
:09:27. > :09:31.would be a good thing. Anything that can result conflict is a good thing.
:09:31. > :09:36.There seems to be little doubt that people want to come to the Maze.
:09:36. > :09:42.What we do not know is exactly what they will see. As the political
:09:42. > :09:48.wrangling enough to scupper the whole project? In theory, it yes. We
:09:48. > :09:55.remember what happened to the Mesa Stadium project. The pieces system
:09:55. > :10:00.-- centre is more advanced but there is still more to work out. The DUP
:10:00. > :10:03.and Sinn Fein have been arguing on the airwaves all day. Tonight, a
:10:03. > :10:07.statement trying to calm everyone down from the First Minister saying
:10:08. > :10:13.that it would be all right on the night. My sense is that it probably

:10:28. > :10:30.
:10:30. > :10:34.poison the relationships? It is almost political deja vu. Here we
:10:35. > :10:41.are, ten years after the prison closed, and we are still talking
:10:41. > :10:44.about this. A former DUP election candidate who admitted being
:10:45. > :10:47.involved in a racist pipe-bomb attack has been sent to jail. John
:10:48. > :10:54.Smyth Jr from Rockfield Heights near Ballymena will spend three years in

:12:26. > :12:30.The judge said that in giving his sentence it must reflect the fact
