:04:20. > :04:24.McGuinness has said. Thank you. Next to education and the future of A
:04:24. > :04:27.levels and GCSEs. The Education Minister at Stormont, John O'Dowd,
:04:27. > :04:29.had commissioned a major review of the exams after changes were
:04:29. > :04:40.announced by his equivalent in England, Michael Gove. Today, the
:04:40. > :04:44.findings of that review were unveiled and it says there is no
:04:44. > :04:47.case for changing exams here in the near future. David Maxwell has this
:04:47. > :04:50.report. The review published today recommended evolution rather than
:04:50. > :04:54.revolution when it comes to our exams system. It was prompted by
:04:54. > :05:02.changes in England which will be phased in from autumn 2015. There,
:05:02. > :05:06.GCSE and A-level students will sit all examinations at the end of the
:05:06. > :05:08.two year course. But the local exams board, CCEA, who conducted the
:05:08. > :05:13.review, don't believe we should follow Michael Gove's direction and
:05:13. > :05:19.the Education Minister here agrees. We have consulted in preparation of
:05:19. > :05:24.this report and people say, letters examined the change but letters
:05:24. > :05:28.examined that carefully and make sure it is based on research and
:05:28. > :05:31.that we end up with a system we can be proud of and can transport across
:05:31. > :05:35.the world. So what does the review recommend? It says GCSEs and
:05:35. > :05:37.A-levels should be retained but there'll be discussions about
:05:37. > :05:42.possible name changes. It proposes a mixture of testing both during and
:05:42. > :05:45.at the end of courses. But the review says students should only
:05:45. > :05:52.have one opportunity to re-sit exams Internal assessments such as
:05:52. > :05:54.coursework will also stay. So while the overall structure remains the
:05:54. > :05:57.coursework will also stay. So while same, what could change? The review
:05:57. > :06:02.says consideration should be given to combining GCSE English and
:06:02. > :06:05.English language. A new GCSE mathematics exam should be
:06:05. > :06:10.considered and a more specialised IT qualification. At A-level, students
:06:10. > :06:15.will only be able to do re-sits in June. The review also recommends
:06:15. > :06:17.developing a new exams system in the longer term and potentially
:06:17. > :06:24.scrapping GCSEs further down the line. But reforms elsewhere mean the
:06:24. > :06:33.exams system is going to become much more fragmented within the UK and
:06:33. > :06:39.that's raised some concerns. We need to be absolutely sure that nothing
:06:39. > :06:43.is done that damages or limits the portability and transfer potential
:06:43. > :06:46.of exams in Northern Ireland when young people sick access to
:06:46. > :06:49.universities in other jurisdictions. But John O'Dowd says qualifications
:06:49. > :06:52.here will still carry equal weight. The review now goes out to
:06:52. > :06:58.consultation but it's already been broadly welcomed by schools. I
:06:58. > :07:02.welcome the fact that he believes that one size does not fit all. I
:07:03. > :07:09.strongly believe that Northern Ireland is very separate and should
:07:09. > :07:12.remain so and therefore, our pupils are good and our examination results
:07:12. > :07:16.are the best in the UK. What the Minister has put forward is
:07:16. > :07:20.something that allows the system to be adjusted rather than the radical
:07:20. > :07:25.change that Michael Gove has proposed. The idea of coursework is
:07:25. > :07:29.important and that allows students to develop a range of skills they
:07:29. > :07:32.don't learn from exams. The review published today has been described
:07:32. > :07:35.as cautious. It requires no immediate upheaval but it does call
:07:35. > :07:38.for a longer term review of GCSEs and A-levels and points to more
