:00:17. > :00:26.This is BBC Newsline. Tonight's top stories: Two men shot dead in just

:00:26. > :00:30.over 24 hours. Dissident Republicans are blamed. In North Belfast, a

:00:30. > :00:34.46-year-old man is found dead in a park lake. And this morning in

:00:34. > :00:36.Londonderry, a man is murdered at a city centre flat. All this as a

:00:36. > :00:41.Londonderry, a man is murdered at a major investment conference comes to

:00:41. > :00:43.Northern Ireland. I'm at that conference in

:00:43. > :00:47.Hillsborough - as investors gather to meet the First and Deputy First

:00:47. > :00:50.Minister. I'll be talking to Peter Robinson and Martin McGuinness

:00:50. > :00:54.shortly. And it's been chilly despite today's

:00:54. > :01:08.sunshine, and for some parts tonight is going to be a cold one.

:01:08. > :01:11.Two murders in just over 24 hours. Both killings are being blamed on

:01:11. > :01:13.dissident Republicans. That's the backdrop to the international trade

:01:13. > :01:18.conference beginning in Hillsborough this evening. A man in north Belfast

:01:18. > :01:22.was found shot dead in a park lake - and another man was murdered in

:01:22. > :01:25.Londonderry. We'll hear about the Belfast shooting in a moment. But

:01:25. > :01:32.first, our North West Reporter Keiron Tourish explains what

:01:32. > :01:36.happened in Derry this morning. The police say 35-year-old Barry

:01:36. > :01:39.McCrory was the victim of a brutal and horrific execution. He was at

:01:39. > :01:45.home with his girlfriend when he met his death. Police say his partner

:01:45. > :01:47.has been left traumatised. The shooting took place before 11

:01:47. > :01:54.o'clock this morning. Ambulances rushed to the scene. A flat in

:01:54. > :01:59.Shipquay Street. A gunmen dressed in a bomber jacket carrying a rucksack

:01:59. > :02:02.buzzed his way into the communal area before targeting the victim in

:02:02. > :02:05.his flat. His girlfriend was forced into another room before the killing

:02:05. > :02:08.his flat. His girlfriend was forced and then alerted police. There were

:02:08. > :02:14.emotional scenes as members of his family arrived in the city centre

:02:14. > :02:18.this morning. I am not prepared to discuss how many times he was shot.

:02:18. > :02:23.This was a brutal execution of an individual. No person has the right

:02:23. > :02:27.to be judge, jury and executioner and that is why we need to find this

:02:27. > :02:30.person. I have no information to suggest any organisation is to

:02:30. > :02:35.person. I have no information to blame, lines of inquiry will be

:02:35. > :02:38.considered. Detectives say there is nothing to link the murder to the

:02:38. > :02:42.considered. Detectives say there is death in north Belfast. People in

:02:42. > :02:48.the UK City of Culture row left stunned by the shooting. I am

:02:48. > :02:54.shocked. I just came up to go to the shops and you'd like to hear anyone

:02:54. > :02:57.getting shot. It is dreadful. I think it is doubtful that anyone

:02:57. > :03:07.would do that. In the middle of the city. Desperate. It should never

:03:07. > :03:11.happen. I am really shocked and saddened. The victim was known to

:03:11. > :03:17.police. They say nothing can justify his murder. Local politicians

:03:17. > :03:22.agreed. Shock and horror. Speaking to local people, they are really

:03:22. > :03:26.shocked to hear of this tragedy. The city has been vibrant in recent

:03:26. > :03:33.years. It has been nothing but good news stories. And this is the last

:03:33. > :03:39.news anyone wants to hear. Our thoughts are with those concerned

:03:39. > :03:43.and the families of those concerned. Deri was in a bubble in recent

:03:43. > :03:49.months. There was a sense of immense pride. We were doing everything we

:03:49. > :03:53.can to promote and market the city. -- Derry was any bubble. I do want

:03:53. > :03:58.to stand in front of you talking about this awful event. How dare

:03:59. > :04:00.they take anyone's life in the circumstances?

:04:00. > :04:02.Detectives have appealed for circumstances?

:04:03. > :04:05.witnesses to come forward. Dissident Republicans have also been

:04:05. > :04:08.blamed for what police have described as a "callous and

:04:08. > :04:13.cold-blooded murder" in north Belfast. The body of father-of-four

:04:14. > :04:19.Kevin Kearney was found in a lake in Alexandra Park yesterday. Our Home

:04:19. > :04:22.Affairs Correspondent Vincent Kearney has this report.

:04:22. > :04:27.Affairs Correspondent Vincent The park where Kevin Kearney died

:04:27. > :04:34.was sealed off to date as officers arrived to search for potential

:04:34. > :04:37.clues to help catch the killer. A dissident Republican group calling

:04:37. > :04:40.itself the IRA has told the Irish News it was responsible. The father

:04:40. > :04:46.of four had taken his children to school before going for a walk.

:04:46. > :04:49.Kevin Kearney's home was just a few yards from the side entrance in

:04:50. > :04:52.Alexandra Park. It is understood he came through this gate around nine

:04:52. > :04:56.o'clock on Tuesday morning to walk his dogs. He was reported missing

:04:56. > :05:00.o'clock on Tuesday morning to walk later that day after failing to

:05:00. > :05:05.return home. The police launched an immediate search and found his body

:05:05. > :05:11.in a Inbee Park yesterday afternoon. Police believe the 46-year-old was

:05:11. > :05:14.shot dead at 9:15am on duty morning. CCTV cameras at his home

:05:14. > :05:18.suggest him a have felt under threat and local sources say he may have

:05:18. > :05:23.been involved in low-level drug dealing. Sinn Fein has pointed the

:05:23. > :05:28.finger of blame at dissident Republicans and urged anyone with

:05:28. > :05:31.information to contact the police. There is no support within the

:05:31. > :05:40.community to bring death back into the community. People thought we had

:05:40. > :05:43.moved on. These people are sued or Republicans and there are people in

:05:43. > :05:51.the ranks who are taking bribes to allow them to continue. To continue

:05:51. > :05:55.dealing drugs to the community. Then they accuse other people of being

:05:55. > :05:58.drug dealers and decide to murder them. The officer leading the

:05:58. > :06:05.investigation confirmed that Kevin Kearney was known to the PS NI or

:06:05. > :06:06.criminal activity but can condemned those responsible for a cold-blooded

:06:06. > :06:13.murderer. No regardless of his those responsible for a cold-blooded

:06:13. > :06:17.lifestyle and previous offences, there is no justification whatsoever

:06:17. > :06:21.for someone to shoot him dead. I would ask the community in North

:06:21. > :06:26.Belfast to think about that and to realise that this could happen again

:06:26. > :06:29.if these people are not brought to justice.

:06:29. > :06:33.The police have appealed to anyone who saw Kevin Kearney in Alexandra

:06:33. > :06:36.Park around nine o'clock on Tuesday morning to contact them. They also

:06:36. > :06:44.want to hear from anyone with information about the movements of a

:06:44. > :06:49.silver poor joke are registration GN Z 8168 found burnt out a short

:06:49. > :06:56.distance Ali in the North -- New Lodge area after the shooting. --

:06:56. > :06:59.ten Max. Two murders on a day when global

:06:59. > :07:03.international investors are being encouraged to come here to create

:07:03. > :07:06.jobs. -- Peugeot. Senior business figures from the United States,

:07:06. > :07:09.China and Japan are arriving at Hillsborough this evening for the

:07:09. > :07:13.start of an investment conference. It's the first event of its kind

:07:13. > :07:17.since 2008. It all kicks off with a reception at Hillsborough Castle.

:07:17. > :07:22.And Donna is there. Investors have started to gather at

:07:22. > :07:25.Hillsborough Castle. This conference has been billed as an opportunity to

:07:25. > :07:28.take Northern Ireland economically to another level. The first and

:07:28. > :07:31.deputy first ministers are with me to another level. The first and

:07:32. > :07:38.this evening. What is your reaction to the fatal shootings today? I want

:07:38. > :07:46.to unreservedly and as forcefully as iPods play can condemn the murders

:07:46. > :07:52.of Barry McCrory and Kevin. -- as forcefully as I possibly can. It is

:07:52. > :07:56.despicable, carried out by criminals under the guise of dissident

:07:56. > :08:06.Republicans. These people, in my opinion, are in the same book as

:08:06. > :08:09.those people in the UDF who shot a woman a couple of weeks ago. There

:08:09. > :08:14.will be outrage and disgust that these killings. That needs to be

:08:14. > :08:17.turned into action and people need to do everything they possibly can

:08:17. > :08:22.to support police services North and to do everything they possibly can

:08:22. > :08:25.South in the apprehension of those people who resort to murderous

:08:25. > :08:32.activities at a time of peace in the country. First Minister? The whole

:08:32. > :08:36.community is horrified by the events and whether it is an attempt to

:08:36. > :08:43.community is horrified by the events murder a young woman in East Belfast

:08:43. > :08:48.or the murder in Londonderry, the community is appalled and condemns

:08:48. > :08:51.it. That has to be a condemnation without any reservation whatsoever.

:08:51. > :08:55.This community wants to move forward. It has an overwhelming

:08:55. > :08:58.desire to do that. Some people here have not got that message and let's

:08:58. > :09:02.make it clear, we are resolved that have not got that message and let's

:09:02. > :09:06.we are going to continue with the process in which we are engaged. We

:09:06. > :09:10.are absolutely determined to take Northern Ireland to a better place.

:09:10. > :09:13.We are on a long journey, there will always be difficulties along the way

:09:13. > :09:15.up there is an absolute determination that Northern Ireland

:09:15. > :09:19.up there is an absolute should have real stability and

:09:19. > :09:22.peace. You are standing here at shoulder to shoulder condemning

:09:22. > :09:24.these killings. That has not been the view of your relationship in

:09:24. > :09:28.these killings. That has not been recent weeks. It has been one of not

:09:28. > :09:32.these killings. That has not been united. How would you describe your

:09:33. > :09:37.working relationship? We have a working relationship that has been

:09:37. > :09:40.there for six years. We are experiencing severe difficulty that

:09:40. > :09:44.the moment over several issues. Issues that I hope can be resolved.

:09:44. > :09:50.Let's not lose sight of the fact that we are here also as part of a

:09:50. > :09:54.very important economic investment conference, the second one to take

:09:54. > :09:58.place on this site, the third one to take place in the course of the last

:09:58. > :10:04.six years. All of which have brought enormous benefits and thousands of

:10:04. > :10:09.interactive jobs. That work has to continue. We have to stand together

:10:09. > :10:16.and we have to be seen to stand together against the violence of the

:10:16. > :10:21.UDF. They have been involved in stoking conflict on the streets in

:10:21. > :10:22.the last 12 months and against the activities of so-called dissident

:10:22. > :10:29.Republicans, all of them criminal gangs. You are asking investors to

:10:29. > :10:30.be confident in Northern Ireland. Given your relationship recently,

:10:30. > :10:37.be confident in Northern Ireland. how confident are you in each other?

:10:37. > :10:42.I would be very depressed if I was to accept the characterisation and

:10:42. > :10:47.definition of that relationship that I read and see on television and in

:10:47. > :10:53.the press. The fact is, we consistently have met and talked and

:10:53. > :10:57.will continue to do that. When there are problems, we seek to resolve

:10:57. > :11:02.those problems. Are you confident you can resolve those problems? We

:11:02. > :11:03.are confident because we have been able to resolve problems that have

:11:03. > :11:07.confronted us over the last number able to resolve problems that have

:11:07. > :11:13.of years and we will continue to work at it. These are problems that

:11:13. > :11:17.have come out of a very deep hatred. There has been massive

:11:17. > :11:22.debate, conflict, death. All of those issues make it difficult for

:11:22. > :11:24.us to deal with legacy matters and they require us to continue to work.

:11:24. > :11:27.us to deal with legacy matters and You do not always resolve them as

:11:27. > :11:34.quickly as people might like but you must continue until they are

:11:34. > :11:38.resolved. What is your measure of success for the investment

:11:38. > :11:41.conference? We have already seen the measure of success from the work we

:11:41. > :11:45.have already been doing in this area so this is an ongoing work. We have

:11:45. > :11:49.seen thousands of jobs come into Northern Ireland, we have more

:11:49. > :11:52.seen thousands of jobs come into direct foreign investment than at

:11:52. > :11:58.any time in history of Northern Ireland. Than anywhere else in the

:11:58. > :12:04.UK outside of London. We are the number one spot for the IT and

:12:04. > :12:07.technology sector. We are one of the top locations for financial services

:12:07. > :12:10.in the world because we have got a good product to sell so I am

:12:10. > :12:16.confident that people, when they see the package, will want to purchase.

:12:16. > :12:21.What are your expectations? I am confident that more investment will

:12:21. > :12:26.flow from this conference and ideas that on the experience of the last

:12:26. > :12:31.six years. In 2008, when we had the first investment conference here, we

:12:32. > :12:37.were experiencing a massive downturn, all sorts of gloomy

:12:37. > :12:39.predictions. We went to the United States when we were told not to and

:12:39. > :12:42.we have got new jobs. That will States when we were told not to and

:12:42. > :12:49.continue and I think we need to continue to bear down on the climate

:12:49. > :12:53.level, it is well below the European average but this is about jobs and

:12:53. > :12:56.average young people. This is about building a better future and those

:12:56. > :13:00.people out there who have been totally negative and thuggish and

:13:00. > :13:05.their behaviour at this time, thinking killing people is a good

:13:05. > :13:11.idea, need to change their ways. Thank you for joining us on BBC

:13:11. > :13:14.Newsline. Return to us later at Hillsborough Castle when we will

:13:14. > :13:21.talk more about the investment conference and an announcement on

:13:21. > :13:25.jobs today. Last night we brought you the story of Sarah Ewart, who

:13:25. > :13:28.called for our abortion laws to be changed. She had to travel to

:13:28. > :13:31.England for a termination after her baby was diagnosed with a serious

:13:31. > :13:34.abnormality. Now a woman carrying twins with the same condition has

:13:34. > :13:43.called on the Health Minister to intervene in her case. Sida Ewert

:13:43. > :13:47.spoke to our raw ground before having an abortion in London. The

:13:47. > :13:53.condition her baby had meant it would not survive under the she

:13:53. > :14:02.could not have the termination here. I have no choice. Unless you're at a

:14:02. > :14:08.could not have the termination here. suicidal stage they will not of your

:14:09. > :14:14.termination. Like Micro and other expectant mother this morning said

:14:14. > :14:22.she has been told her twin girls have the same condition. They are

:14:22. > :14:27.going to have absolutely no outcome of life whatsoever. To make that

:14:27. > :14:29.decision in the first place as one of the hardest I have ever had to

:14:29. > :14:34.decision in the first place as one meet in my life. The fact I have to

:14:34. > :14:39.go to a different country where I don't know and when I do not know

:14:39. > :14:46.anybody, to have to go through something like that. The mother has

:14:46. > :14:53.until next week to decide whether to travel to England for termination.

:14:53. > :14:58.Edwin Poots says he is willing to travel to meet with the couple

:14:58. > :15:02.involved and he will speak regarding the matter of potential prosecution

:15:03. > :15:10.involved and he will speak regarding of health service staff. Health and

:15:10. > :15:14.safety breaches have fled to the death of an employee. He was killed

:15:15. > :15:17.two years ago when crushed by an 11 tonne skip at the waist settlement

:15:17. > :15:24.two years ago when crushed by an 11 where he lived -- the waist did Pope

:15:24. > :15:29.where she worked. The 39-year-old was a father of two. -- the waist

:15:29. > :15:36.did Pope where she worked. The council says lessons have been

:15:36. > :15:41.learned. The Court of Appeal has been healing gunshot residue found

:15:41. > :15:43.on a court linked to one of the two men jailed for murdering Constable

:15:43. > :15:51.Stephen Carroll could have come from a different incident. The men are

:15:51. > :15:58.seeking to have their convictions overturned. Our reporter was in the

:15:58. > :16:01.High Court. They are both serving life sentences for Denmark of

:16:02. > :16:09.Constable Stephen Carroll who was shot dead as he responded to a

:16:09. > :16:16.treble nine call in 2009. After the killing, a brown cork was found in

:16:17. > :16:28.the back of a car. -- a brown jacket. It had gunshot residue on

:16:28. > :16:32.it. It was said the connection could be proved to the relevant articles.

:16:32. > :16:37.it. It was said the connection could The judge then asked if it was the

:16:37. > :16:48.improvement you and reasonable doubt that the gun was transported in the

:16:49. > :16:54.car, the reply was now. I keep prosecution which this said he had

:16:54. > :16:57.seen one of the men close to the murder scene on the site of the

:16:57. > :17:05.shooting -- on the night of the shooting. He was accused of being a

:17:05. > :17:09.Walter Mitty type who made up stories. But the allegations were

:17:09. > :17:20.Walter Mitty type who made up said to remain unproven. The case

:17:20. > :17:23.will continue tomorrow. The coroner 's court has heard how a toddler

:17:23. > :17:31.died six years ago after recipe of beating. The child was hit so hard

:17:31. > :17:39.that he was blinded before he died. -- after at severe beating. He was

:17:39. > :17:45.20 months old after he died in 2007. He was being looked after by his

:17:45. > :17:51.father while his mother was out at the supermarket. The man said when

:17:51. > :17:56.he got to the boy he was not breathing and he was taken by

:17:56. > :18:00.ambulance to hospital, medics called lease in because of the severity of

:18:00. > :18:05.the injuries the child had sustained to his head. The court were called

:18:05. > :18:09.the injuries the child had sustained these injuries were consistent with

:18:09. > :18:15.being punched with a clenched fist. He said these were discreet boozers,

:18:44. > :18:55.expect it to give evidence to the court tomorrow. -- impedance are

:18:55. > :19:04.expected. -- the child's mother and father. Translink says the latest

:19:04. > :19:07.survey of its bus and rail network shows an all time high customer

:19:07. > :19:10.approval rating. The company says that's reflected in a rise of nearly

:19:10. > :19:13.two million extra passengers. However, the Consumer Council says

:19:13. > :19:16.Translink is still falling short on communicating with the public when

:19:16. > :19:21.services don't run on time. The punctuality of public transport is

:19:21. > :19:29.not the only concern. There is a twice yearly independent rating of

:19:29. > :19:38.the transport services. In terms of passenger numbers we are seeing an

:19:38. > :19:45.increase in those using the trains. Customer satisfaction is as high as

:19:45. > :19:50.it has ever been in 15 years. We want to see more people using buses

:19:50. > :19:56.and trains so it is onwards and up words. It is said it is still raw

:20:19. > :20:26.respond to complaints. We took a strong all of us and yours at the

:20:26. > :20:39.bus stop. My bus never seems to come, the trainers always cancelled.

:20:39. > :20:46.Say they are fine. At my age I am just glad to get on! The ad in the

:21:09. > :21:20.100 businesses are red resented. We have had word of jobs. Announcements

:21:20. > :21:25.had been in the pipe line, they were designed to give the conference a

:21:25. > :21:28.feel-good factor and send out a message to new potential investors

:21:28. > :21:35.that this is a place where overseas companies are already doing

:21:35. > :21:44.business. We were talking about a new multinational company that is an

:21:44. > :21:46.engineering film -- engineering firm and the are providing equipment for

:21:47. > :21:57.construction and quarrying industries. An evil space company

:21:57. > :22:12.plans a £120 million research and develop it company. -- even. There

:22:12. > :22:21.is so the hope of attracting inward investment from China. We have had

:22:21. > :22:34.conferences before, job creation before, but how do you keep those

:22:34. > :22:40.jobs in Northern Ireland? In 2008 it was a different world. Ian Paisley
