:00:00. > 3:59:59struggled with an Australian barrage all tour. Let's hope this guy has a

:00:00. > :00:12.lot more success Good evening. The political talks

:00:13. > :00:15.chaired by the former US diplomat, Richard Haass, have broken up

:00:16. > :00:19.without agreement. Dr Haass has gone home for Christmas. He'll now send

:00:20. > :00:22.revised proposals on flags, parades and the past to the five Executive

:00:23. > :00:30.parties, and will decide later whether to return. Mark Devenport

:00:31. > :00:35.has this report. Dr Richard Haass had harboured real

:00:36. > :00:40.hopes is could broker a deal before Christmas. Last night's overnight

:00:41. > :00:48.session was his most determined effort to persuade the parties. But

:00:49. > :00:55.after eight hours, Dr Haass and his co-chair had to concede there would

:00:56. > :00:57.be no deal for now. I'm not in the business of doing postmortem --

:00:58. > :01:06.postmortems because the patient is still alive. It became clear over

:01:07. > :01:14.the last few hours that despite the fact we had invested something like

:01:15. > :01:23.40 hours in the last two days alone, it just became clear that it

:01:24. > :01:29.wasn't going to be possible. The negotiators made the best of the

:01:30. > :01:32.outcome. We have to be realistic. There remains a significant

:01:33. > :01:38.difference across all three areas under negotiation. I think with

:01:39. > :01:48.further effort we are capable of closing the gap. We could have done

:01:49. > :01:55.a deal. We didn't manage to do it. Dr Richard Haass says he may come

:01:56. > :02:00.back. We did not get there tonight but I think we did get real in terms

:02:01. > :02:04.of a better understanding of what everybody's bottom line is and why

:02:05. > :02:08.they are taking the positions they are taking. I remain optimistic.

:02:09. > :02:13.There is a lot we can get over the line in the next few days. We have

:02:14. > :02:19.not got a Christmas Eve deal but we can still achieve a New Year's Eve

:02:20. > :02:25.deal. That is the purpose of the night. Tonight we have been talking

:02:26. > :02:29.about those fundamental issues. People no need to reflect on what

:02:30. > :02:33.they have heard and what they have said and on their own position, and

:02:34. > :02:38.they need to reflect on that in light of the expectations in our

:02:39. > :02:41.community. There was no single stumbling block. But unionist

:02:42. > :02:45.expressed concern that some proposals for dealing with the

:02:46. > :02:51.troubled past may deal -- may lead to the security forces being under

:02:52. > :02:55.tough scrutiny than polymeric -- paramilitaries. The future of a deal

:02:56. > :02:59.depends on the responses of the parties to Dr Richard Haass's next

:03:00. > :03:02.proposals and his acceptance of their willingness to compromise.

:03:03. > :03:06.Police are investigating reports of a gun attack on Lisnaskea PSNI

:03:07. > :03:09.station in County Fermanagh. Local people heard shots shortly after

:03:10. > :03:17.eight o'clock last night. No one was hurt. Andy West reports.

:03:18. > :03:20.Through the snow, what appeared to be bullet holes puncturing the

:03:21. > :03:24.perimeter fence. The police cannot confirm they have come under

:03:25. > :03:28.attack, but gunfire was reported at eight o'clock last night. It is

:03:29. > :03:32.thought an automatic weapon was used. I have spoken to one of the

:03:33. > :03:37.people in the houses next to the police station. He said he heard the

:03:38. > :03:43.gunfire coming from the road. It appears to be a drive past

:03:44. > :03:51.shooting. It was an automatic rifle. So clearly there are a still some

:03:52. > :03:54.people intent on murder and mayhem. It is important that people give

:03:55. > :04:01.information. There are people out there who know who carried this out.

:04:02. > :04:04.Nobody was injured. Police are looking through CCTV footage and

:04:05. > :04:07.following all lines of inquiry. A 26-year-old man has been remanded

:04:08. > :04:12.in custody charged with the attempted murder of a colleague

:04:13. > :04:15.following a work Christmas party. The victim is in a serious condition

:04:16. > :04:24.in hospital. This report from Dan Stanton.

:04:25. > :04:29.Ballymena court was told that Andrew Linton from Clark Mills threw a

:04:30. > :04:32.punch which knocked his victim down. -- cloth mills. It happened in the

:04:33. > :04:37.early hours of yesterday morning after the two men had been drinking

:04:38. > :04:40.with colleagues. A detective constable told the court that two

:04:41. > :04:45.witnesses have claimed that Andrew Linton through to further punches

:04:46. > :04:51.while his victim lay unconscious on the ground. He also said the victim

:04:52. > :04:53.had undergone surgery this afternoon at the Royal Victoria Hospital.

:04:54. > :04:56.Andrew Linton was remanded in custody and will appear in court in

:04:57. > :05:00.the New Year. Two men were stabbed in Lisburn

:05:01. > :05:04.early this morning. It's thought trouble broke out as people tried to

:05:05. > :05:07.get into a property in the Iniscarn area. The men's injuries are said to

:05:08. > :05:10.be not-life-threatening. A woman was treated for facial and body

:05:11. > :05:16.injuries. A 25-year-old man was arrested but later released.

:05:17. > :05:22.The weather forecast is next with Barra.

:05:23. > :05:26.We have had a real taste of winter today with some showers and the

:05:27. > :05:31.biting wind making it feel much colder. This evening we hold onto

:05:32. > :05:36.the yellow warning for wind. The strongest winds towards the West

:05:37. > :05:40.Coast. There will be a few showers but overnight it will turn mainly

:05:41. > :05:45.dry and cold, with some frost developing. Possibly some nice first

:05:46. > :05:49.thing. Overall, Christmas Day will be pretty decent. We expect it to be

:05:50. > :05:53.fairly settled. It will be cold. There will be plenty of bright

:05:54. > :05:58.weather and some good spells of sunshine. Just a few showers. Maybe

:05:59. > :06:02.in the West. Most places will stay dry and bright. Territories will

:06:03. > :06:09.struggle. You will want to wrap up warm. -- temperatures will

:06:10. > :06:15.struggle. Another good day on Boxing Day. It is going to feel cold. There

:06:16. > :06:20.is no rain in the forecast until later in the evening on Boxing Day.

:06:21. > :06:26.For Friday, we are expecting some more stormy conditions. Merry

:06:27. > :06:28.Christmas. That is it. News online will keep you up-to-date. Happy
