:00:00. > :00:00.industry. We are back with
:00:00. > :00:13.Good evening. A woman and a man have been seriously injured in a stabbing
:00:14. > :00:21.in Newtownabbey. Others were also hurt. Our reporter, Eunan
:00:22. > :00:24.McConville, has been to the scene. Six people were injured in this
:00:25. > :00:30.incident here this evening. It happened shortly before 4pm, when
:00:31. > :00:35.the emergency services got the call. It is understood that a woman was
:00:36. > :00:39.stabbed and as other people try to get the knife away from her
:00:40. > :00:43.assailant, they suffered cuts as well. That woman has been taken to
:00:44. > :00:47.hospital. She is described as being in a serious condition. There is
:00:48. > :00:51.also another man in a serious condition. Other people were treated
:00:52. > :00:56.at the scene by a ambulance personnel. At the moment, police are
:00:57. > :01:01.not looking for anyone else in connection with this incident.
:01:02. > :01:04.The main Stormont parties are still locked in talks to come to an
:01:05. > :01:09.agreement on parades, flags and the past. The Chairman, Dr Richard
:01:10. > :01:14.Haass, has made it clear that this is the final day of discussions. In
:01:15. > :01:17.a moment, we'll go live to the talks venue in east Belfast. First, with
:01:18. > :01:19.some flash photography in his report, our Political Reporter,
:01:20. > :01:28.Stephen Walker, has details of today's developments.
:01:29. > :01:33.Decision time and all eyes were on the Stormont Hotel. This was billed
:01:34. > :01:37.as the final day but, as ever with this process, the timing has
:01:38. > :01:42.slipped. Discussions were meant to begin at 6am. It was mid-morning
:01:43. > :01:49.before the talking finally got underway. When he arrived, Richard
:01:50. > :01:56.Haass was giving little away. Earlier, she had tweeted -- he had
:01:57. > :02:00.tweeted that the last day was the most important day. Early
:02:01. > :02:10.indications suggested that a deal was possible. Are you optimistic? I
:02:11. > :02:15.don't see why not. Those sentiments were shared by Sinn Fein's
:02:16. > :02:23.negotiating team. I think we can sort them out if the political will
:02:24. > :02:29.is there. Agreements are always the first step. Honouring those
:02:30. > :02:36.agreements is the next step. A separate commission would be a
:02:37. > :02:39.established to examine flags. There could be fresh investigations into
:02:40. > :02:44.the troubles, something that Unionists have concerns about. If
:02:45. > :02:48.the biggest strength is dealing with the past and if that can win
:02:49. > :02:54.confidence of victims and survivors, what ever any Unionist
:02:55. > :02:56.party may or may not have to say about it, that should guide us.
:02:57. > :03:01.Tonight, the talking is continuing but as yet the champagne is still on
:03:02. > :03:10.ice. Mark Devenport is at the talks for
:03:11. > :03:13.us. What is the latest? We have seen a red carpet rolled out here at the
:03:14. > :03:18.front of the Stormont Hotel Buddha not for any kind of celebration of a
:03:19. > :03:22.political agreement was it is for a school for more that is going on
:03:23. > :03:27.inside the hotel. There is rather more humble food for the negotiators
:03:28. > :03:34.who have gone back in after their tea. I'm not sure whether we will
:03:35. > :03:40.have a result by the late news was the what is left to be agreed? We
:03:41. > :03:46.understand there were several areas of disagreement. We need do not yet
:03:47. > :03:51.know whether they have been resolved. The first is flags and a
:03:52. > :03:55.code of conduct for those who are taking part in parades. Another area
:03:56. > :03:59.considers the history of the troubles and what the new
:04:00. > :04:02.information retrieval commission would do in terms of investigating
:04:03. > :04:12.what has been termed broad beans about the troubles. At eight -- at
:04:13. > :04:18.one time, there was talk of a collusion between the two sides and
:04:19. > :04:24.allegations of ethnic cleansing around the border. That list is not
:04:25. > :04:31.in the latest document that Unionists say they wanted in and
:04:32. > :04:34.delivered is not in, the new body should not get into investigating
:04:35. > :04:40.those broad beans at all. After listening to the politicians there,
:04:41. > :04:46.how optimistic should we be that they can come to an agreement? The
:04:47. > :04:52.pressure is definitely on. Richard Haass has made it clear that this is
:04:53. > :05:02.the final day. He also said that the politicians had seen -- should see
:05:03. > :05:14.the moment. There will be a major embarrassment if they go home Andy
:05:15. > :05:21.Haddad. -- go home empty-handed. We will have more later this evening on
:05:22. > :05:24.BBC One. Police officers investigating a gun
:05:25. > :05:28.attack on Lisnaskea police station last week have found a car that may
:05:29. > :05:32.have been used by the gunmen. Shots were fired at the back of the base
:05:33. > :05:34.last Monday in an attack blamed on dissident republicans. A Volkswagen
:05:35. > :05:39.Passat car similar to the grey or green coloured one believed to have
:05:40. > :05:42.been used by the attackers was later found on fire near Kinawley.
:05:43. > :05:45.It's believed a car was deliberately set on fire this morning close to
:05:46. > :05:48.houses in west Belfast. The incident happened shortly before 9am at
:05:49. > :05:52.Norglen Court in the Turf Lodge area. The Fire and Rescue Service
:05:53. > :05:56.put out the fire. The police are investigating what happened and have
:05:57. > :05:59.appealed for information. The Police say they are awaiting
:06:00. > :06:02.postmortem examination results following the unexplained death of a
:06:03. > :06:09.42-year-old man at a house party in west Belfast on Friday. Four men
:06:10. > :06:12.were hospitalised. The police are urging people to heed warnings about
:06:13. > :06:20.the dangers of taking illegal drugs. Martin Cassidy reports.
:06:21. > :06:25.The man who died following the house party here in west Belfast has been
:06:26. > :06:32.named locally as 42-year-old Gerald Mulholland. There were hundreds of
:06:33. > :06:39.people on the road at in the aftermath of the party and others
:06:40. > :06:42.were said to be drenched in sweat. Others went to hospital for some a
:06:43. > :06:47.postmortem has been carried out and the police say they are not in a
:06:48. > :06:53.position to confirm that the death was caused by drugs misuse. They
:06:54. > :07:00.have warned the dangers of taking illegal drugs. Drugs, particularly
:07:01. > :07:09.is so-called recreational ecstasy type drugs are becoming much more a
:07:10. > :07:15.part of people's social life, more people are using them recreationally
:07:16. > :07:18.and I think because the number of people using these drugs is
:07:19. > :07:26.increasing, then you are getting more and more of these incidents of
:07:27. > :07:35.overdoses, where people are ill or fatalities. The minister says that
:07:36. > :07:39.drug dealers are operating on a regular basis. Police have issued a
:07:40. > :07:45.warning about a type of yellow ecstasy known as speckled Rolex.
:07:46. > :07:48.The former First minister, Ian Paisley, remains in hospital after
:07:49. > :07:50.undergoing treatment at the weekend. Lord Bannside's family released a
:07:51. > :07:54.statement confirming he had been admitted for necessary tests and is
:07:55. > :07:58.in good spirits. A number of homes were evacuated in
:07:59. > :08:01.east Belfast this afternoon during a security alert. A suspicious object
:08:02. > :08:04.found in Parkgate Avenue was later declared to be an elaborate hoax. The
:08:05. > :08:07.area between Connsbrook Avenue and Mersey Street was closed while bomb
:08:08. > :08:14.disposal experts examined the object.
:08:15. > :08:19.The weather is next with Angie Phillips.
:08:20. > :08:25.Good evening. Things have settled down a little bit for the second
:08:26. > :08:29.half of today. Through the rest of the week, we have more unsettled wet
:08:30. > :08:32.and windy spells coming our way. Thankfully, it will not be
:08:33. > :08:36.particularly cold for the most part. Having said that, with the clear
:08:37. > :08:40.skies come tonight will be chilly in a few spots, especially in the
:08:41. > :08:44.countryside. It will get close enough to freezing to get a touch of
:08:45. > :08:47.ground frost. Only temporarily, Tebbit is all rise through the night
:08:48. > :08:52.as the next batch of wet and windy weather moves in and some of that
:08:53. > :08:55.rain will be fairly heavy. Given that the ground is saturated in
:08:56. > :08:59.places, particularly in the eastern counties, the Met office has issued
:09:00. > :09:03.another rain warning. There is a risk of further localised flooding.
:09:04. > :09:07.That is something to be aware of into tomorrow morning. Into New
:09:08. > :09:12.Year's Eve. Eventually, things will improve slowly. It will not get off
:09:13. > :09:16.to a great start. It will be windy, wet in places as well, particularly
:09:17. > :09:19.in the East. Through the morning, we will see something drier and
:09:20. > :09:24.brighter developing. In the meantime, the brain heads across
:09:25. > :09:27.Wales into Scotland and England with the windy conditions as well. There
:09:28. > :09:32.will be some hill slowly over the Scottish mountains was brighter
:09:33. > :09:35.conditions follow into Wales and the south-west and the south-west of
:09:36. > :09:39.Scotland. In the Republic and Northern Ireland, you'll get a few
:09:40. > :09:41.more showers during the afternoon. If you're thinking of heading out
:09:42. > :09:45.for the celebrations tomorrow evening, most of those will be
:09:46. > :09:51.fading away, so more fine and dry weather. Another weather system is
:09:52. > :09:54.moving in for New Year's Day with more wet and windy weather.
