:00:00. > :00:12.Good evening. Last night's trouble in East Belfast has been condemned
:00:13. > :00:16.by First Minister Peter Robinson. Four police officers were hurt when
:00:17. > :00:18.a protest turned violent outside the Skainos community centre, where
:00:19. > :00:31.former IRA bomber Patrick Magee was speaking. Mark Simpson reports.
:00:32. > :00:35.It was billed as a night of reconciliation but it turned into a
:00:36. > :00:39.confrontation. Loyalist protestors objected to the presence of this
:00:40. > :00:48.man, former IRA bomber Patrick Magee. He was invited to speak in
:00:49. > :00:55.east Belfast. A crowd of more than 50 people gathered outside. Some of
:00:56. > :00:58.them wanted to get inside. Jim Wilson was one of those at the
:00:59. > :01:06.meeting. On his way out, he was attacked. Or does he think organised
:01:07. > :01:11.the demonstration? It could be the Twitter and Facebook people. They
:01:12. > :01:16.decide to do what they want to do. I don't have a problem but they have
:01:17. > :01:20.to do it in a manner that is respectful to everybody. Reverend
:01:21. > :01:28.Leslie Carroll was one of those involved. As she any regrets? We
:01:29. > :01:33.would not want to put the police in that position again. People were
:01:34. > :01:37.injured. There were all sorts of safety issues. That has to be
:01:38. > :01:41.balanced alongside the statement we wanted to make, which was that you
:01:42. > :01:46.can move freely around this wonderful city. It belongs to all
:01:47. > :01:50.others. What happened here last night was very different to what
:01:51. > :01:58.happened 14 months ago when Martin McGuinness arrived for the official
:01:59. > :02:02.opening of this new complex. It was smiles all around and not a protest
:02:03. > :02:11.inside. So what has changed in east Belfast? It is a fluid situation. We
:02:12. > :02:17.are now in a different situation. There is the backdrop of protests,
:02:18. > :02:21.the continuing decline in the relationship between policing and
:02:22. > :02:26.law and order. Chose a lack of leadership. We have seen an
:02:27. > :02:31.inability within recent months within recent -- within loyalism,
:02:32. > :02:36.where people have difficulty accepting this place is diverse.
:02:37. > :02:39.Four people -- police officers were injured last night. There were no
:02:40. > :02:42.arrests. A court has ruled that a husband and
:02:43. > :02:45.wife accused in connection with a sexual slavery case, can be
:02:46. > :02:48.identified. 57-year-old Keith Baker and Caroline Bernadette Baker, 51,
:02:49. > :02:55.are from Drumellen Mews in Craigavon. The husband faces 15
:02:56. > :02:59.charges against two women, one of whom suffers from a severe learning
:03:00. > :03:01.disability. His wife is charged with falsely imprisoning the same
:03:02. > :03:06.vulnerable woman between 2004 and 2012.
:03:07. > :03:12.Around 50 employees of Mivan could get new jobs, with the sale of the
:03:13. > :03:17.firm's assets to the Newry based MJM Group. Mivan effectively went out of
:03:18. > :03:22.business at the start of this week, with the loss of 250 jobs. MJM says
:03:23. > :03:33.it will revive the Mivan brand and create new employment. John Campbell
:03:34. > :03:35.has more. With Mivan in administration, it
:03:36. > :03:39.looked like one of the best-known names in local construction would be
:03:40. > :03:48.gone for good, and with it all of the jobs. But now the MJM group has
:03:49. > :03:56.snapped up the Mivan name and some of its artists. -- acids. It will
:03:57. > :04:02.run Mivan as a stand-alone business. It will take on between 40 and 50
:04:03. > :04:06.people. Former Mivan staff can expect to be at the front of the
:04:07. > :04:09.queue. In the coming days and weeks recruitment will begin, machines
:04:10. > :04:15.will start up again and the business will be trading. This is the
:04:16. > :04:23.existing factory for MJM in Newry. The firm has come a long way since
:04:24. > :04:29.1983. It specialises in fitting out cruise ships and super yachts. It
:04:30. > :04:34.turns over ?20 million a year and directly employs 150 people. I asked
:04:35. > :04:43.its owner how many jobs he aims to create. I was asked this question
:04:44. > :04:50.about ten years ago in country. I said we would get to 30 or 40. Last
:04:51. > :04:56.year we had 715 employees. No subcontractors. Some were temporary
:04:57. > :05:00.workers. I have the same hopes for this company. The new owner is
:05:01. > :05:05.bullish. The local MP was also thinking of those who will not be
:05:06. > :05:12.getting a new job. The news that is coming from Mivan today is something
:05:13. > :05:15.that will be encouraging. But we are not there yet. There are still a lot
:05:16. > :05:21.of people who are employed that are not employed. Over the past five or
:05:22. > :05:24.six years, many well-known construction businesses have
:05:25. > :05:27.disappeared completely. The fact anything has been saved from the
:05:28. > :05:30.collapse of Mivan will be seen as positive.
:05:31. > :05:34.Sinn Fein has condemned online abuse targeted at one of its councillors
:05:35. > :05:37.who teaches at the Boy's Model School in north Belfast. The party's
:05:38. > :05:41.education spokesman, Chris Hazzard, says that the teacher has been
:05:42. > :05:45.subjected to what he describes as a witch hunt by the Protestant
:05:46. > :05:48.Coalition. That's rejected by Willie Frazer from the Coalition, who says
:05:49. > :05:54.he condemns any threats made against the teacher. But he says that her
:05:55. > :05:57.role at the school should be looked at because of her political views.
:05:58. > :06:02.The abuse has been condemned by the Ulster Teachers Union as an attack
:06:03. > :06:06.on democracy. Tens of thousands of pounds worth of
:06:07. > :06:09.damage has been caused to 28 cars at a Bangor car dealership. Vandals
:06:10. > :06:16.poured paint thinner or acid over the cars in the early hours of this
:06:17. > :06:19.morning. All of the cars will now have to be re-sprayed. The owner
:06:20. > :06:25.says he doesn't know why his business has been targeted.
:06:26. > :06:31.I have been in Banga selling cars for the past 26 years and never had
:06:32. > :06:35.any problems. I cannot sell any of these cars. The businesses on its at
:06:36. > :06:38.this moment. Two men in their twenties have been
:06:39. > :06:41.arrested in connection with the attempted murder of teenager Scott
:06:42. > :06:44.Vineer in Lisburn in 2012. The autistic teenager was discovered
:06:45. > :06:50.lying unconscious in the grounds of a disused warehouse. He'd been
:06:51. > :06:53.repeatedly beaten around the head. The former US diplomat, Richard
:06:54. > :06:56.Haass, says he believes that the five Executive parties will
:06:57. > :07:02.eventually agree to compromise on flags, parades and the past based on
:07:03. > :07:05.his final proposals. On New Year's Eve, Dr Haass presented a blueprint
:07:06. > :07:15.to the parties, which has yet to achieve political consensus.
:07:16. > :07:20.These ideas now provide a new baseline. Whether it is next week,
:07:21. > :07:25.next month or next year, sooner or later the five parties will have two
:07:26. > :07:28.return to these negotiations. The range of compromise will not be
:07:29. > :07:34.fundamentally different to what was in the negotiations. Even if we did
:07:35. > :07:38.not succeed now, something like this will have to take effect if Northern
:07:39. > :07:41.Ireland is really going to move forward.
:07:42. > :07:44.Sport now, and the Irish women's rugby team have defeated Scotland by
:07:45. > :07:49.a record 59-0l in their opening game in defence of the Six Nations title
:07:50. > :07:52.they won last year. Now it's been a wet and windy day.
:07:53. > :07:56.Conditions were particularly bad in parts of County Down. Here in
:07:57. > :07:58.Newcastle sandbags were given out after the water rose dangerously
:07:59. > :08:06.high on this road. To tell us what sort of weather we
:08:07. > :08:11.can expect for the weekend, here's Cecilia Daly.
:08:12. > :08:15.Good evening. There is a lot going on in the weather in the next 24
:08:16. > :08:22.hours. We have a snow warning in force. We are expecting heavy
:08:23. > :08:27.showers to turn more to snow. Moving in from the West. The snow mostly
:08:28. > :08:32.over the hills. Some snow dropping to lower levels, too. Dropping
:08:33. > :08:38.temperatures will mean some very icy conditions. Further wintry showers
:08:39. > :08:42.on Saturday morning. If you are on the roads tonight or tomorrow
:08:43. > :08:48.morning, you may come across snow. Icy conditions. Over the hills, it
:08:49. > :08:52.could be up to five centimetres tomorrow morning. Later on Saturday,
:08:53. > :08:56.Gales will become an issue. Low pressure off the coast of Donnie
:08:57. > :09:03.Gold, driving lots of showers across us, and high winds. That could lead
:09:04. > :09:08.to big waves onto parts of the East Coast. Possibly some flooding.
:09:09. > :09:14.Wintry showers piling in thick and fast across Northern Ireland
:09:15. > :09:17.tomorrow. There will also be a hazard of snow across Scotland and
:09:18. > :09:22.northern England, particularly over high ground. Showers of mostly rain
:09:23. > :09:28.further south. Severe gales developing on the Irish Sea. It will
:09:29. > :09:32.affect many coasts of western Britain. Some strong winds across
:09:33. > :09:35.the Republic of Ireland. During the afternoon, most of the showers
:09:36. > :09:42.falling as rain. Temperatures recovering. It is not all bad news.
:09:43. > :09:47.On Sunday we get a bit of a break. Still some showers around but drier,
:09:48. > :09:50.brighter and less windy. Then we do it all over again as we returned to
:09:51. > :09:57.work next week. More heavy rain. Have a great weekend. That's it for
:09:58. > :10:01.now. Our next television news is tomorrow afternoon. Good night.
