:00:09. > :00:12.Good evening. A West Belfast family have been the

:00:13. > :00:15.victims of a so-called tiger kidnapping. They were held hostage

:00:16. > :00:21.for several hours this morning after an armed man tricked his way into

:00:22. > :00:25.their home. Helen Jones reports. A man December guys as a postman

:00:26. > :00:28.forced his way into a farm home. He produced a gun and got one of the

:00:29. > :00:31.family to go the workplace to get money, while holding the other two

:00:32. > :00:35.hostage. The couple were held until an

:00:36. > :00:41.undisclosed sum of cash was handed over to another member of the gang

:00:42. > :00:45.at a street off the Falls Road. That was round 9.30 this morning. The

:00:46. > :00:51.alarm was raised, all three members of the family were safe but was one

:00:52. > :00:56.examined in hospital I think tiger kidnapping is the most horrendous of

:00:57. > :01:00.crimes. It instils fear in family, with the person who has to leave his

:01:01. > :01:06.family home or her home to go to the place of work to withdraw money and

:01:07. > :01:10.bring it over to the kidnapper, they are unaware of what is happening to

:01:11. > :01:15.their family so they are put under a massive amount of pressure. I think

:01:16. > :01:19.it is wrong, unjust and anybody who has information must come forward to

:01:20. > :01:22.ensure that due process prevails and people are brought before the

:01:23. > :01:26.courts. Police are appealing for information about a man who was seen

:01:27. > :01:34.getting out of a silver car in the street. He handed over a hold all to

:01:35. > :01:38.another man who then walked in the direction of Ivy Street. The police

:01:39. > :01:42.say this is the first in over a year.

:01:43. > :01:45.A man's been in court in Craigavon charged with the murder of the

:01:46. > :01:49.prison officer, David Black. Mr Black, who was a 52-year-old father

:01:50. > :02:00.of two, was shot dead in 2012 as he drove to work at Maghaberry Prison.

:02:01. > :02:04.Gordon Adair was in the court. Shaun McVey arriving at Craigavon court

:02:05. > :02:08.this morn, a short time later he was charged with the murder of Prison

:02:09. > :02:13.Officer David Black, Mr Black died after gunmen pulled alongside his

:02:14. > :02:18.car on the M1, and opened fire. Hitting the officer several types.

:02:19. > :02:22.Shaun McVey was arrested here at his home in Lurgan on Monday.

:02:23. > :02:27.This morning in the dock he nodded twice, the first time to confirm his

:02:28. > :02:31.name, the second time to confirm that he understood the charge, his

:02:32. > :02:37.solicitor said the case against him was based on his purchase of three

:02:38. > :02:40.item, a hat, govs and matches. He outlined the explanation his client

:02:41. > :02:45.had for having the items and asked the prosecution to review the charge

:02:46. > :02:49.of murder. However, a detective told the court the investigation was very

:02:50. > :02:53.much still live, and said it could be three months before a file is

:02:54. > :02:59.with the PPS. Shaun McVey was remanded in custody.

:03:00. > :03:02.As he was led away, a large group of supporters applauded and shouted

:03:03. > :03:05.encouragement. He will appear good afternoon later this month.

:03:06. > :03:11.The police say they're getting tough on the UVF and other criminal gangs

:03:12. > :03:14.in East Belfast. Officers raided a house in the area last night in an

:03:15. > :03:16.operation aimed at tackling organised crime. Our Home Affairs

:03:17. > :03:32.correspondent Vincent Kearney accompanied them. Go, go. A police

:03:33. > :03:35.raid in East Belfast last night. The man the officers were looking for

:03:36. > :03:40.wasn't there. This is part of what the police call

:03:41. > :03:44.operation moor, it has been running for four months and is aimed

:03:45. > :03:48.attackling drug dealing and other criminal activity by members of the

:03:49. > :03:53.UV F and other groups in East Belfast. No arrests were made and no

:03:54. > :03:56.illegal substances or items were found.

:03:57. > :04:02.Politicians in the area have been calling for more visible police,

:04:03. > :04:06.after claims the PSNI was failing to tackle the UV F They have been

:04:07. > :04:09.encouraged. It was important they took the opportunity to show they

:04:10. > :04:13.were prepared to stand with our community against criminals. People

:04:14. > :04:16.in the community have welcomed an increased visible police operation

:04:17. > :04:23.in East Belfast. It is clear people continue to live in fear as well.

:04:24. > :04:27.In addition to drug, police are targeting those involved in

:04:28. > :04:32.extortion, blackmail, selling smuggled cigarette, and running

:04:33. > :04:36.illegal gaming machines. Since early oblt October there have been

:04:37. > :04:40.searches of more than 70 houses and business premise n the past two

:04:41. > :04:44.years there have been round 50 arrest and more than 40 people have

:04:45. > :04:49.been charged or reported to the Public Prosecution Service. The

:04:50. > :04:54.majority have UV F links. The police insist this operation isn't just for

:04:55. > :04:59.the optic, but what they call co-ordinated attrition. To disrupt

:05:00. > :05:03.the activities of those involved in organise crime. The number of

:05:04. > :05:09.convictions in the months ahead will be the ultimate test of its success.

:05:10. > :05:12.The United Nations has accused the Vatican of adopting policies which

:05:13. > :05:15.allowed priests to sexually abuse thousands of children. The UN's

:05:16. > :05:17.watchdog for children's rights said the Roman Catholic Church must

:05:18. > :05:21.immediately remove all clergy known or suspected to be child abusers. It

:05:22. > :05:24.also urged the Pope to launch an investigation into the abuse of

:05:25. > :05:35.girls and young women at Catholic-run workhouses in Ireland.

:05:36. > :05:40.It is not taking the necessary measures to protect and ensure

:05:41. > :05:44.justice for girl, who have arbitrarily placed by their

:05:45. > :05:49.families, state institutions and churches, in the Magdalen laundries

:05:50. > :05:54.of Ireland, run by for congregations of Catholic sisters.

:05:55. > :05:56.A chain of clothing retailers has closed with the loss of around 150

:05:57. > :05:59.jobs. The Gino NV shops closed last week

:06:00. > :06:03.when a liquidator was appointed to the partnership operating the

:06:04. > :06:08.business. The chain has more than a dozen shops. Many of the jobs are

:06:09. > :06:10.part-time. The supermarket chain Tesco is

:06:11. > :06:14.expanding its network of smaller shops here, taking on the likes of

:06:15. > :06:17.Centra and Spar. It's a response to changing consumer habits, but it

:06:18. > :06:23.means big challenges for local retailers. Our Economics and

:06:24. > :06:34.Business Editor John Campbell reports. So what is it like when

:06:35. > :06:39.Tesco opens up next door? We had a Tesco Express open approximately

:06:40. > :06:45.nine months ago. Ten months ago. Two doors down from us. The first two

:06:46. > :06:50.weeks of that opening was like shock and awe, we were in intensive care

:06:51. > :06:54.for two weeks. Roy runs a Centra shop in South

:06:55. > :06:58.Belfast. There are hundreds of shopkeepers like him, operating

:06:59. > :07:02.these kinds of convenience stores in every town across Northern Ireland.

:07:03. > :07:07.The big supermarkets have long provided some form of competition,

:07:08. > :07:10.but now things are getting even more intense.

:07:11. > :07:14.The way we shop is changing. Increasingly people are doing one

:07:15. > :07:18.big shop online and topping up at the local convenience store. The big

:07:19. > :07:22.supermarket chains are responding to this. Across the UK, they are

:07:23. > :07:26.opening more and more of these smaller convenience stores.

:07:27. > :07:31.In Northern Ireland, that process has only just begun. The vast

:07:32. > :07:36.majority of shops are operated by local retailers, under the Centra,

:07:37. > :07:40.Mace, Spar and Vivo brands, by contrast, Sainsbury's has no small

:07:41. > :07:45.stores here, and the number of Tesco Express is just 16. 36 but that will

:07:46. > :07:49.soon increase, with three more due to open in Belfast.

:07:50. > :07:53.One will be on the site of this former pub. Right next to an

:07:54. > :07:58.existing Co-op. So is Tesco targeting existing

:07:59. > :08:03.businesses? The The company says no, it has brought much-needed jobs and

:08:04. > :08:10.the location is chosen solely on where it thinks they would be

:08:11. > :08:11.the location is chosen solely on Meanwhile, the Centra as managed to

:08:12. > :08:16.claw back about half the trade it lost when Tesco opened. With some

:08:17. > :08:20.customers finding the new arrival wasn't as cheap as they hoped. Other

:08:21. > :08:25.retailers can expect a similar challenge soon.

:08:26. > :08:32.Now hire is the weather. Good evening. The weather is a lot

:08:33. > :08:35.quieter, a lot less stormy tonight. Fairly light winds, dry in many

:08:36. > :08:39.places at the moment but during the early hours showers will move in

:08:40. > :08:43.from the west, so by morning it will be damp again in many place, but no

:08:44. > :08:47.frost or fog. And it will be a brighter day tomorrow, still some

:08:48. > :08:50.showers round, so certainly not rain free, and most of the showers will

:08:51. > :08:54.come through the morning during the rush hour when some will be lively,

:08:55. > :08:58.moving through on a brisk westerly wind. But it will become drier in

:08:59. > :09:02.many places as the day goes on and it is a up many drier day in the

:09:03. > :09:05.Republic of Ireland. Drier for many pars of Britain. Some sharp showers

:09:06. > :09:10.for the west of Scotland but more rain will be moving in to the south

:09:11. > :09:16.and South Wales, an amber warning has been issued by the Met Office,

:09:17. > :09:19.that means be prepared for further flooding, that is valid for the next

:09:20. > :09:24.three days so further flooding to come across southern Britain.

:09:25. > :09:28.So not too bad tomorrow for us, some sunshine, one or two shower,

:09:29. > :09:31.especially in the west and temperatures fairly respectable at

:09:32. > :09:34.seven or eight. A noise day on Friday, although it will be chilly,

:09:35. > :09:39.with frost and ice to begin with, but most places will have sunshine.

:09:40. > :09:43.It is a pause, really before the rain comes back again, the next area

:09:44. > :09:47.of low pressure moving across us, which will bring more wet and windy

:09:48. > :09:51.wetter. We don't have any warnings in force at the moment but it is

:09:52. > :09:54.likely that early warnings will be issued before the weekend. So enjoy

:09:55. > :09:58.the drier, brighter weather over the next couple of days, before it turns

:09:59. > :10:01.wet again this weekend. That is it for now from BBC

:10:02. > :10:10.Newsline. Good night. Last year, True North brought you

:10:11. > :10:13.the personal stories Turns out it was a wee, small,

:10:14. > :10:19.piddly petrol bomb.
