:00:00. > :00:00.on the BBC News Channel, we are back with the late news 10:10.

:00:00. > :00:13.Good evening. A man has appeared in court in

:00:14. > :00:16.Omagh, charged with the murder of his partner. 36-year-old Mairead

:00:17. > :00:19.McCallion was found with head injuries at a house in Castleview

:00:20. > :00:26.Court in the town last Sunday and died the next day. Michael

:00:27. > :00:30.Fitzpatrick reports. 50-year-old Noel Knox arrived in handcuffs at

:00:31. > :00:35.the magistrate court this morning, to face a charge of murdering

:00:36. > :00:40.Mairead McCallion. In the dock he spoke only to confirm that he

:00:41. > :00:42.understand the charge against him. A detective inspector told the court

:00:43. > :00:46.police were called to Castleview Court on Sunday morning by the

:00:47. > :00:49.defendant, because he wanted two people removed from his brother's

:00:50. > :00:52.house. When police arrived they noticed Mairead McCallion outside

:00:53. > :00:55.the house, in her socks, and she allearned she had been assaulted by

:00:56. > :01:00.the defendant, who had grabbed her and struck her head off a wall.

:01:01. > :01:04.She was taken to a police station, for a medical examination, and was

:01:05. > :01:07.then brought to another address. The court heard it was then her

:01:08. > :01:12.condition began to deteriorate, she was brought to hospital, where she

:01:13. > :01:15.died the following day. The Detective Inspector said the

:01:16. > :01:21.defendant had denied ever assaulting Mairead McCallion. A defence

:01:22. > :01:26.solicitor said Mr Knox wanted to express his sincere condolence to

:01:27. > :01:29.her family. The court heard that Noel Knox and Mairead McCallion had

:01:30. > :01:34.been in a relationship for seven year, and that she had previously

:01:35. > :01:38.made complaints to police about him, but these had been withdrawn. A bail

:01:39. > :01:45.application was refused, and Knox will appear in court again by a

:01:46. > :01:48.videolink on 25th March. Two people are in police custody

:01:49. > :01:52.following the death of a man in Coleraine. He died in hospital after

:01:53. > :01:55.being found outside a flat early this morning. The victim was 46, but

:01:56. > :02:02.the police haven't released his name yet. Kevin Sharkey reports. Side by

:02:03. > :02:06.side on a Saturday morning. A busy street and a crime scene. The victim

:02:07. > :02:09.was found here just before four o'clock this morning, he had head

:02:10. > :02:12.injuries and was rushed to hospital, but it was too late to save his

:02:13. > :02:15.life. The police arrested two people, they

:02:16. > :02:21.are helping with inquiries into how the man was injured shortly before

:02:22. > :02:24.he died. The apartment block is beside the

:02:25. > :02:28.old bridge and forensic officers have been carried out detailed

:02:29. > :02:31.examination, and the police are looking for information. They want

:02:32. > :02:35.to hear from anyone in this Strand Road area in the early hours of this

:02:36. > :02:38.morning and noticed anything suspicious. Most of the

:02:39. > :02:42.investigation is focussing on this ground floor flat. Evidence being

:02:43. > :02:45.gathered outside the door, and investigations also taking place

:02:46. > :02:49.inside the building. And across the road, another crime

:02:50. > :02:53.scene. Running along the banks of the river. People I have been

:02:54. > :02:56.speaking to have been expressing shock and sadness at this terrible

:02:57. > :03:00.news. It is not something we expected to wake up to this morning,

:03:01. > :03:03.and thoughts and prayers go out to the family circle. It will be a

:03:04. > :03:08.difficult time for them in the next few weeks. The police continue to

:03:09. > :03:12.question two people about what happened here, investigators are

:03:13. > :03:15.also continuing their inquiries at the scene.

:03:16. > :03:20.An 83-year-old man has died in a road crash in County Londonderry. He

:03:21. > :03:23.was William Stinson from the Foyle area. The accident happened on the

:03:24. > :03:26.Glenshane Road near Drumahoe, at around 11.15 this morning and

:03:27. > :03:29.involved two vehicles. A woman was also taken to hospital, but her

:03:30. > :03:36.injuries are not thought to be life-threatening.

:03:37. > :03:39.A planned homecoming event in County Donegal tonight for John Downey, who

:03:40. > :03:42.was charged with murdering four soldiers in the 1982 Hyde Park

:03:43. > :03:46.bombing, has been cancelled. A judge stopped the case against Mr Downey

:03:47. > :03:49.last week because the accused had been sent a government letter

:03:50. > :03:52.telling him, mistakenly, that he was not wanted by police. Supporters had

:03:53. > :03:55.organised what was billed as a welcome home dance for him. But in a

:03:56. > :03:59.statement issued through Sinn Fein, Mr Downey has said he's decided to

:04:00. > :04:03.cancel tonight's event. He's said it was planned as a simple get-together

:04:04. > :04:08.and he did not want it to be turned into a media circus.

:04:09. > :04:11.Artefacts worth thousands of pounds have been stolen from the Somme

:04:12. > :04:14.Heritage Centre in Newtownards. Two men entered the building as paying

:04:15. > :04:18.customers just before midday and made off with the items. The centre

:04:19. > :04:28.houses some of the most significant artefacts from the Home Rule era.

:04:29. > :04:32.These are really rare items of history, Ulster's history, and the

:04:33. > :04:38.period of time we have them out for is the 100th anniversary of the sort

:04:39. > :04:43.of 1913, and we had this exhibition, it is called Ireland on the brink,

:04:44. > :04:45.telling the political strife taking place in Ireland and these were part

:04:46. > :04:51.of that history and heritage. It is a sad loss to the museum.

:04:52. > :04:54.The Irish Football Association say they expect Northern Ireland's

:04:55. > :04:57.friendly match in Cyprus to go ahead next week, after a referee's car was

:04:58. > :05:00.damaged in a bomb attack near Nicosia yesterday. All First

:05:01. > :05:03.Division matches in Cyprus this weekend have been postponed. The IFA

:05:04. > :05:10.Chief Executive Patrick Nelson says they are monitoring developments

:05:11. > :05:14.ahead of the match on Wednesday. The latest information is that the dints

:05:15. > :05:18.would have nothing do with international football, and wouldn't

:05:19. > :05:24.put the game in jeopardy. However, we are being sensible. We are

:05:25. > :05:31.monitoring developments, we will in touch with the sub yacht FA today.

:05:32. > :05:37.We are waiting for the Foreign Office to comment on it P after a

:05:38. > :05:41.promising start it has ended up wet but the good news the rain is not on

:05:42. > :05:44.for the night. It will clear away again in the next few hours and the

:05:45. > :05:49.rest of the night will be fairy dry, clear and chilly as the winds start

:05:50. > :05:54.to ease. There could be a rural frost and ice and fog round. That

:05:55. > :05:59.won't last two long too long because the next area of rain will move in.

:06:00. > :06:02.So dry to begin with but cloudy, some patchy rain initially and by

:06:03. > :06:07.mid-morning more rain is starting to set in across the west. That is

:06:08. > :06:12.tomorrow's weather front. It will move eastwards across Ireland, north

:06:13. > :06:16.and south, reaching western areas of Scotland, England and Wales. Not

:06:17. > :06:20.quite reaching the south-east, and behind it, it brightens up again

:06:21. > :06:23.across the Republic of Ireland, with the scattering of shower, so

:06:24. > :06:27.Northern Ireland becoming drier and brighter tomorrow, not that warm, so

:06:28. > :06:31.any showers that come along could be wintry over the hills. And as we

:06:32. > :06:35.head into the new week, the mix of sunshine and showers continues, more

:06:36. > :06:39.unsettled for the second half of the week.

:06:40. > :06:41.Newsline will be back tomorrow evening at 6.20. Enjoy the rest of

:06:42. > :06:45.your weekend. Bye. Nowadays we take the issue of

:06:46. > :06:48.fairness in employment for granted. I have never felt it important

:06:49. > :06:51.to ask anybody's religion when I'm going to employ them

:06:52. > :06:53.as a sheet metal worker. This is the story of fair

:06:54. > :06:56.employment in Northern Ireland. it masked a much greater problem

:06:57. > :07:02.in terms of educational disadvantage. The Fair Employment Act of 1989

:07:03. > :07:06.changed Northern Ireland's society dramatically.

:07:07. > :07:10.We still have a way to go.
