:00:00. > :00:15.Hello and welcome to BBC Newsline. Comments by the former Secretary of

:00:16. > :00:18.State Peter Hain suggesting soldiers responsible for the killing of

:00:19. > :00:20.civilians on Bloody Sunday should not be prosecuted have been

:00:21. > :00:23.criticised by Sinn Fein as "ill-judged". The DUP says if it

:00:24. > :00:26.emerges terrorists are not being sought for prosecution, it would be

:00:27. > :00:34.unthinkable the courts would pursue killings related to the state.

:00:35. > :00:38.Martin Cassidy reports. Again, Peter Hain finds himself

:00:39. > :00:43.embroiled in Northern Ireland affairs. The former Secretary of

:00:44. > :00:48.State said soldiers involved in the Bloody Sunday killings should not be

:00:49. > :00:51.prosecuted. This column -- follows the disclosure that almost 200

:00:52. > :00:56.paramilitary suspects were sent letters assuring them what they were

:00:57. > :01:00.not being sought by police. He is now says there should be an

:01:01. > :01:05.evenhanded approach to members of the British security forces as well.

:01:06. > :01:11.If you have addressed the question of former terrorists involved in

:01:12. > :01:13.activity then it should apply evenhandedly across the board to

:01:14. > :01:19.members of the British security forces as well.

:01:20. > :01:22.Sinn Fein says that given the ongoing police investigation into

:01:23. > :01:29.Bloody Sunday, the comments are ill judged and ill timed.

:01:30. > :01:33.He should have reflected the legal reality and that is the

:01:34. > :01:40.investigation into what happened have to be pursued by the PSN I. We

:01:41. > :01:44.are clear that there should be no amnesty for anyone and no one should

:01:45. > :01:50.be immune from prosecution if they have broken the law. If we were in a

:01:51. > :01:55.situation where it became evident that people involved in paramilitary

:01:56. > :01:58.terrorist activity were not being pursued for prosecution, it would be

:01:59. > :02:05.absolutely unthinkable that the courts would pursue those who were

:02:06. > :02:10.involved in killings related to the state.

:02:11. > :02:13.The justice minister says that by saying crimes committed during the

:02:14. > :02:15.troubles should not be investigated, Peter Hain's comments

:02:16. > :02:20.go against the rule of law. In Dublin, the convicted drug dealer

:02:21. > :02:24.John Gilligan remains in a stable condition in hospital after he was

:02:25. > :02:30.shot in the west of the city last night. He was shot six times by two

:02:31. > :02:33.masked gunmen. Mr Gilligan had been accused of murdering the journalist

:02:34. > :02:39.Veronica Guerin in 1996 but was later acquitted. From Dublin, Shane

:02:40. > :02:43.Harrison reports. John Gilligan, perhaps the

:02:44. > :02:49.Republicans most notorious criminal, was released last October

:02:50. > :02:52.after serving -- server serving 17 years but within two months an

:02:53. > :03:01.attempt was laid -- made on his life. The would-be victim played

:03:02. > :03:05.down the incident. No problem whatsoever.

:03:06. > :03:12.But last night he was not so lucky. He went to his brother 's house and

:03:13. > :03:16.two gun men forced their way into the home and fired several shots at

:03:17. > :03:22.him while he was in the living room. He was hit in the chest, a hip, leg

:03:23. > :03:27.and stomach but the injuries were not life-threatening. He was taken

:03:28. > :03:32.to a nearby hospital where he is stable. The gunmen escaped in a

:03:33. > :03:36.silver coloured 4-wheel drive. He had warnings that his life was in

:03:37. > :03:40.danger. Anyone with information is asked to come forward.

:05:45. > :05:48.on Tuesday morning. The high pressure is trying to build from the
