:00:00. > :00:00.first look at the papers on the BBC News channel. Now
:00:00. > :00:12.Good evening. Extra police officers have been
:00:13. > :00:14.deployed in Larne after last night's violence. Up to 100 loyalists
:00:15. > :00:18.ransacked three homes, injured a resident and a police officer. The
:00:19. > :00:21.South East Antrim UDA has been blamed for the trouble, which it's
:00:22. > :00:31.believed is connected to a feud and recent police arrests. Here's our
:00:32. > :00:34.north-east reporter David Maxwell. Tensions have been mounting for
:00:35. > :00:39.weeks according the police, at least two of the houses attacked have been
:00:40. > :00:44.targeted previously. But no-one predicted the scale of
:00:45. > :00:51.last night's trouble, in two parts of Larne This is Ferris Avenue when
:00:52. > :00:53.two properties were damage. 100 men arrived in this estate. This is one
:00:54. > :00:57.of the properties that was damaged and I have been speaking to a man
:00:58. > :01:01.that was in this house at the time, he has described masked men coming
:01:02. > :01:06.to the door, smashing the window, and the famine side, round five
:01:07. > :01:11.people barricading themselves into the kitchen. He has described it
:01:12. > :01:15.adds terrifying and it has left the family in shock. None wanted to
:01:16. > :01:18.appear op camera but one member of the family said they are having to
:01:19. > :01:21.consider whether they will stay in the area. Some of their neighbours
:01:22. > :01:27.left their homes when the trouble was at its height. Anybody could
:01:28. > :01:33.co-could that to anybody is terrible. Just terrible. I couldn't
:01:34. > :01:36.ask for better neighbours. Both families attacked are neighbours and
:01:37. > :01:40.it is understood part of the motivation for the violence is an
:01:41. > :01:45.ongoing dispute with members of the south-east Antrim UDA. A shot was
:01:46. > :01:50.fired through a window of this house in January. Another possible motive
:01:51. > :01:55.is a show of strength following the recent arrests of six UDA members in
:01:56. > :01:59.the area This group which wouldn't be recognised by other elms in the
:02:00. > :02:03.UDA seem to be on some sort of a power trip. They want to grab power
:02:04. > :02:08.in communities and we are determined to bring them to justice, not to
:02:09. > :02:13.give them that legitimacy, they shouldn't exist in my opinion. The
:02:14. > :02:17.other house attacked was a mile-and-a-half away. Here, the same
:02:18. > :02:22.gang left a similar trail of destruction, and seriously injured
:02:23. > :02:25.one man. A police officer was also injured during the hour long
:02:26. > :02:30.rampage. The trouble was condemned on the floor of the assembly today,
:02:31. > :02:34.where many politicians called for robust police action. I think the
:02:35. > :02:37.police need to do more, the police were quickly on the ground last
:02:38. > :02:42.night, but not in sufficient numbers. Nay had to retreat and wait
:02:43. > :02:45.for reinforcements to come. By which stage the damage was done. The
:02:46. > :02:49.police had an opportunity last night for arresting a lot of these men,
:02:50. > :02:53.and let it slip through their hands, they were slow and they will have to
:02:54. > :02:57.admit that themselves, they were too slow. The PSNI says its response was
:02:58. > :03:02.appropriate and it had a public order unit on the ground within 20
:03:03. > :03:06.minute, never the less, a number of police officers in the area will be
:03:07. > :03:12.increased in the coming days. The family of a man who died at
:03:13. > :03:15.Antrim Area Hospital four years ago have said they've had to fight for
:03:16. > :03:18.every piece of information about his death. Neil Cormican was 81. He
:03:19. > :03:22.passed away after being given the wrong medication. In a review of the
:03:23. > :03:25.Northern Trust his case is one of 20 where the care was described as
:03:26. > :03:37."below standard". Our Health correspondent Marie-Louise Connolly
:03:38. > :03:41.reports. In April 2010 Neil Cormican was in Antrim area hospital where he
:03:42. > :03:46.was recovering from a fall. But after Jose Dover of potassium a drug
:03:47. > :03:49.his family say he shouldn't have been described triggered a fatal
:03:50. > :03:55.heart attack. His family say they have just wanted the truth. We never
:03:56. > :04:00.set out on any kind of a witch hunt, we never wanted anyone to lose their
:04:01. > :04:07.job, over what has happened. To our dad. But we felt that the standard
:04:08. > :04:12.of dad's care over those two days was obviously extremely poor. What
:04:13. > :04:19.we would like to see is that for the doctors and nurses who were
:04:20. > :04:22.involved, in dad's case, where their performance was less than competent,
:04:23. > :04:26.there should be a note on their record, to say what has happened and
:04:27. > :04:31.that they have within involved in this It is a statutory deucety to
:04:32. > :04:36.report such deaths to coroner. It took the trust six months to report
:04:37. > :04:42.this death. Held later the inquest revealed a catalogue of failings.
:04:43. > :04:46.The family received an apology, the trust's medical director said their
:04:47. > :04:50.father had died as a result of mistakes made by clinical staff of
:04:51. > :04:54.the hospital. He also apologised in his words, for the major mistake he
:04:55. > :04:59.had made in advising that there was no need to inform the coroner about
:05:00. > :05:03.the death. Last week, days before the minister
:05:04. > :05:08.went public with details of a review, the trust again wrote to the
:05:09. > :05:13.family. In that let e Paul Cummings a senior director at the trust,
:05:14. > :05:18.offered to mark Mr Cormican's death with a donation to charity or the
:05:19. > :05:23.purchase of a piece of art. I would have thought that the channel there
:05:24. > :05:26.energies to improving their services would have been better for dad's
:05:27. > :05:30.memory, rather than a piece of art with his name on it. I don't see the
:05:31. > :05:33.lodge nick that at all. This afternoon in the assembly the Health
:05:34. > :05:38.Minister confirmed that not all families have been informed of
:05:39. > :05:42.details, and said he was considering new guidelines described as a duty
:05:43. > :05:47.of candour. We are top story the idea, but I don't think it is the
:05:48. > :05:50.entire solution. I think it may be part of the solution, and for
:05:51. > :05:54.instance in some of the cases we have heard in the media, there may
:05:55. > :06:01.have been a lack of communication with the family, and that is, that's
:06:02. > :06:07.very clearly an issue. Neil Cormican had 17 grandchildren.
:06:08. > :06:12.His story is one of several across the Health Service.
:06:13. > :06:15.The police believe a pipe bomb found on the golf course in Strabane was a
:06:16. > :06:19.clear attempt to kill police officers. The device was packed with
:06:20. > :06:25.nuts and bolts. With more details - our North-West reporter Keiron
:06:26. > :06:31.Tourish. Army bomb disposal experts spent all day Deeing with the
:06:32. > :06:35.device. It was left on the golf course in Strabane. Two masked men
:06:36. > :06:40.had warned residents about the device last night.
:06:41. > :06:45.This is a six inch pipe, it is packed full of nuts and bolts and
:06:46. > :06:49.there is explosives in it. Had this gone off this would have killed
:06:50. > :06:53.anybody in the vicinity, 30, 40 yards, this would have killed, this
:06:54. > :06:57.is a device designed to kill police officers. The golf club said some
:06:58. > :07:02.members were playing on the course before the alert was raised. Very
:07:03. > :07:05.alarming, we have had a few people playing this morning and not only
:07:06. > :07:08.that, I mean our ground staff have been out cutting, with heavy
:07:09. > :07:13.machinery, anything could have got disturbed. The bombers were strongly
:07:14. > :07:17.condemned. Get off our back, that is what people have said to me today.
:07:18. > :07:21.We don't want this any longer. They can't understand, as I have said the
:07:22. > :07:24.logic of the guys who are intent on seriously maiming or killing
:07:25. > :07:28.someone. Detectives who were investigating this incident have
:07:29. > :07:32.issued an appeal for information. They want to hear from anyone who
:07:33. > :07:36.noticed any suspicious activity in or round the golf course last
:07:37. > :07:41.evening, to get in touch. Over 600 motorcycling fans gathered
:07:42. > :07:44.at Titanic Belfast tonight to hear details of this year's North West
:07:45. > :07:48.200. Among the announcements was news that the BBC will be covering
:07:49. > :07:51.the event for the next five years. A dozen stars were there, including
:07:52. > :08:01.the ten times winner Alastair Seeley. It is good to give it back
:08:02. > :08:05.to fans who have had a hard couple of years with the weatherment it is
:08:06. > :08:09.good to meet everybody and meet the top riders and in race week
:08:10. > :08:13.sometimes it the hard to get us, when we are still in the zone, so it
:08:14. > :08:19.is nice and relaxed here and everybody can see the machines we
:08:20. > :08:23.are going to be riding as well. Now the weather. We have a wet spell
:08:24. > :08:26.through tonight but once that clear, tomorrow looks as though it will be
:08:27. > :08:31.drying up again, but you will need to make the most of it through the
:08:32. > :08:34.rest of the week, we will find the clouds gatheringen again to bring
:08:35. > :08:39.occasional spells of rain or showers. So for tonight, we do have
:08:40. > :08:43.a weather warning in place, for those heavy bursts of rain, they
:08:44. > :08:46.could well lead to localised surface water flooding. That rain continues
:08:47. > :08:49.for a good part of the night before it starts to ease off and turn
:08:50. > :08:53.lighter and patchy, but still damp by the end of the night but mild,
:08:54. > :08:57.temperatures no lore than six degrees. So as we head into
:08:58. > :09:01.tomorrow, yes, things are going to dry up and it will brighten up too,
:09:02. > :09:05.but it will be a slow damp start with mist and hill fog, eventually
:09:06. > :09:09.that patchy rain will be pulling away. Across the Republic of Ireland
:09:10. > :09:13.becoming drier and brighter, and certainly dry and bright across many
:09:14. > :09:16.parts of England and Wales with spells of hazy sunshine and highs
:09:17. > :09:20.getting up to 20 degrees again in the south-east. Cloudier for
:09:21. > :09:23.Scotland, with spells of patchy rain, the remnants of that weather
:09:24. > :09:27.front. Some of those North Sea coasts they will be prone to mist
:09:28. > :09:31.and sea fog and could feel cool. We could get some mist and sea fog
:09:32. > :09:36.along at the east coast of Ireland and some of that could be drifting
:09:37. > :09:40.up to Northern Ireland for the coast as we head towards the afternoon, in
:09:41. > :09:45.that event temperatures pegged back a little at ten or 11 degrees.
:09:46. > :09:49.Inland it brightens up with highs of 13 or 14. Enjoy it because through
:09:50. > :09:54.the rest of the week the clouds are back, also occasional spells of
:09:55. > :09:58.rain. BBC Newsline has summaries during the Breakfast programme
:09:59. > :10:01.tomorrow morning starting at 6. 25. From me, good night.
