:00:00. > :00:00.back with the late news at 10pm. Now, the

:00:00. > :00:17.Good evening. A man has been shot dead in West Belfast. It happened

:00:18. > :00:20.late this afternoon. He was shot as he was about to get into his car at

:00:21. > :00:26.a commercial yard. Our reporter, Mervyn Jess, has been to the scene.

:00:27. > :00:29.Part of this bring good road remains cordoned off around the scene of the

:00:30. > :00:34.shooting as the police investigation gets underway. The victim 's name

:00:35. > :00:39.has not released but it is understood he is from West Belfast.

:00:40. > :00:44.It happened late this afternoon at a fuel depot of the Springfield Road.

:00:45. > :00:48.One man I spoke to said the victim was taken into the commercial yard

:00:49. > :00:53.and shot a number of times at point-blank range. A red BMW

:00:54. > :00:59.believed to have been used was later fined but I'd add each byte growth,

:01:00. > :01:01.not far from the scene. No one has admitted the killing but dissident

:01:02. > :01:10.republicans are likely to be one line of enquiry. Oliticians from all

:01:11. > :01:14.parties have paid tribute to the independent MLA David McClarty, who

:01:15. > :01:17.has died at the age of 63. He had been suffering from cancer. The

:01:18. > :01:22.Assembly member for East Londonderry was a former Deputy Speaker at

:01:23. > :01:25.Stormont. Chris Page reports. In the many tributes paid to David McClarty

:01:26. > :01:29.today, he has been repeatedly described as a gentleman. He had

:01:30. > :01:32.been an elected representative for 25 years, serving on Coleraine

:01:33. > :01:38.Council before becoming a founder member of the Stormont Assembly in

:01:39. > :01:42.1998. For most of his time as a mLA, he was in the Ulster Unionist Party,

:01:43. > :01:47.a former leader says he made a great contribution. Even his bitterest

:01:48. > :01:50.opponents have had to concede that he projected his views and his

:01:51. > :02:00.beliefs, but he did it in a manner that did not offend or upset. He

:02:01. > :02:04.managed to achieve that, which, in Northern Ireland politics, is not

:02:05. > :02:07.easy to do. Popular with colleagues and constituents, he was Deputy

:02:08. > :02:12.Speaker of the Assembly for four years until 2011. In that year, he

:02:13. > :02:16.was deselected as a candidate for the Stormont elections by his party,

:02:17. > :02:26.but he was re-elected as a Independent. -- an. The East

:02:27. > :02:29.Londonderry MLA stood back from political life after being diagnosed

:02:30. > :02:36.with cancer. All parties have paid tribute. I would say he has given a

:02:37. > :02:44.lot of happiness and hope and I think a lot of influence to people

:02:45. > :02:50.and I was one who had the privilege of knowing you. He was a lovely,

:02:51. > :02:53.genuine gentleman, someone who was always courteous and fair when he

:02:54. > :02:57.was in the chair. And somebody who had integrity. The Deputy First

:02:58. > :03:00.Minister Martin McGuiness said that David McClarty will be missed. The

:03:01. > :03:06.First Minister Peter Robinson said his death is a huge loss to

:03:07. > :03:14.politics. He said he was a man of decency and honour. A man is being

:03:15. > :03:17.treated in hospital having sustained serious face and head injuries

:03:18. > :03:23.during an assault in Belfast city centre last night. It happened in

:03:24. > :03:27.the High Street area around 9:30pm. The police say two men pushed the

:03:28. > :03:32.46-year-old victim to the ground and stamped on his head. A car has been

:03:33. > :03:34.destroyed in a petrol bomb attack in Carrickfergus. It happened at around

:03:35. > :03:37.11:00pm last night on Elizabeth Avenue. Police are appealing for

:03:38. > :03:40.witnesses and are especially keen to hear from anyone who may have

:03:41. > :03:47.noticed three youths running from the area. The owner of the car says

:03:48. > :03:52.he's in shock. I was in bed, I give not have a clue until my wife came

:03:53. > :03:59.home and she said the Jeep is on fire. I said what? The police are

:04:00. > :04:04.here. I cannot do without it. The wife, she is attending the doctor

:04:05. > :04:13.three times a week. So she takes the car. If I don't have mine. What do I

:04:14. > :04:16.do? A 32-year-old man is to appear at Belfast Magistrates' Court

:04:17. > :04:19.tomorrow on drugs charges. He was arrested after police officers

:04:20. > :04:26.searched a car in the Glen Road area of West Belfast yesterday evening.

:04:27. > :04:29.The first cyclist safety TV campaign has begun here. The Department of

:04:30. > :04:32.the Environment campaign comes as research reveals that you are 23

:04:33. > :04:37.times more likely to be killed or injured on a bike than in a car.

:04:38. > :04:42.Mark Simpson reports. Do not forget to watch out for me at junctions.

:04:43. > :04:49.The aim of the campaign is to educate everyone who uses the road,

:04:50. > :04:56.whether it be on four wheels or two. Do not forget, I am human as well.

:04:57. > :05:03.Share the road, respect everyone's journey. In the past ten years, the

:05:04. > :05:08.number of cyclists injured on the Northern Ireland roads has doubled,

:05:09. > :05:11.so who is to blame? Around half of the collisions involving cyclists

:05:12. > :05:19.are caused by cyclists and the other half are caused by motorists. We

:05:20. > :05:23.need to respect everyone's journeys and understand each other's needs

:05:24. > :05:29.and requirements. So, do drivers now have more sympathy for cyclists?

:05:30. > :05:32.They come flying along, some of them think they are in the Tour de

:05:33. > :05:37.France. It works both ways, cyclists need to be aware of cars and vice

:05:38. > :05:40.versa. Sometimes it is scary, they are often not watching you,

:05:41. > :05:47.especially if they are trying to turn left. They are more respectful

:05:48. > :05:55.of the cyclists here than in Canada. We are better than Canada? Yes. The

:05:56. > :06:00.new campaign will be broadcast in the run-up to the start of the Giro

:06:01. > :06:03.d'Italia cycling race. The likelihood is that more and more

:06:04. > :06:18.people are now going to start cycling. It has emerged that one of

:06:19. > :06:21.Great Britain's top cyclists is to miss the Giro d'Italia in Belfast

:06:22. > :06:23.next month. Following illness, Mark Cavendish is skipping the

:06:24. > :06:32.competition, instead heading to California for training. Planning

:06:33. > :06:37.approval has been given from leisure complex at the Windsor Park Stadium

:06:38. > :06:39.in South Belfast, replacing the existing leisure centre and it will

:06:40. > :06:43.be situated within the West stand of the football ground. Onto the Easter

:06:44. > :06:47.weekend weather forecast with Angie Phillips.

:06:48. > :06:54.It has been a glorious Good Friday and the day is ending on a glorious

:06:55. > :06:59.note. Still plenty of evening sunshine to end the day. Tonight,

:07:00. > :07:03.you will get more cloud edging into western and northern areas and these

:07:04. > :07:08.bots will mean temperatures are not as low as they were last night but

:07:09. > :07:12.towards the south and east, we still have clear spells so it will be

:07:13. > :07:16.colder and rural spots could dip towards freezing, giving touches of

:07:17. > :07:21.ground frost. Tomorrow, another fine day, dry with plenty of sunshine and

:07:22. > :07:27.the cloud in the north and West will start to retreat through the

:07:28. > :07:32.morning. That unbroken sunshine extends through central and eastern

:07:33. > :07:36.Ireland and parts of Wales and into central and southern Scotland also.

:07:37. > :07:40.We will have some cloud drifting from the east across England but

:07:41. > :07:44.even here there will be sunshine and away from the North Sea coast, where

:07:45. > :07:51.a does feel coast, temperatures reaching the mid-teens. For Northern

:07:52. > :07:56.Ireland for the afternoon, lots of sunshine with highs of 15 in the

:07:57. > :07:59.West, cooler along the east coast and similar conditions into eastern

:08:00. > :08:02.Sunday. Eastern Monday, disappointing, blustery with more

:08:03. > :08:04.cloud and showers. That's it from us until 10:15pm. You can can keep in

:08:05. > :08:06.touch via Facebook and Twitter.
