:00:00. > :00:00.firepower in military exercises. That is all from the BBC News at

:00:00. > :00:20.six. It Good evening. The headlines on BBC

:00:21. > :00:27.Newsline. Tough new hurdles to jump if you want a mortgage.

:00:28. > :00:32.They are asking me how I went out. How much I spent, how often I went

:00:33. > :00:39.out. I thought why did they need to know that? The police

:00:40. > :00:42.investigator... A deal has been tabled to buy Northern Ireland's

:00:43. > :00:46.biggest entertainment venue, the Odyssey Pavilion.

:00:47. > :00:58.The County Down family played by dozen's of rats.

:00:59. > :01:02.Can Khan -- can Dr Cancer -- Brendan Rodgers lead Liverpool to the title?

:01:03. > :01:04.Overall there should be more dry and wet. I will be back with a full

:01:05. > :01:14.forecast. New tougher rules are being

:01:15. > :01:18.introduced to try to stop the kind of lending that contributed to the

:01:19. > :01:21.recent financial crisis. It a move that could affect thousands of

:01:22. > :01:25.people here trying to secure a mortgage. From midnight, you are --

:01:26. > :01:30.your lifestyle will influence the chance of you getting a home loan,

:01:31. > :01:35.with questions being asked about spending habits. With the details

:01:36. > :01:40.BBC Newsline's Mark Simpson reports. Can you really afford a mortgage? Be

:01:41. > :01:46.prepared to be asked about how much you spend on childcare, transport,

:01:47. > :01:49.holidays, what about gambling, gym, toy tris? And even milk deliveries

:01:50. > :01:54.and haircuts. These are the questions which

:01:55. > :01:58.according to the new rules mortgage providers should ask, but how much

:01:59. > :02:04.of a change will it be? What they are looking at now is what you can

:02:05. > :02:12.afford in two years from now, it used for very much up until now it

:02:13. > :02:16.is what are your outgoings, now they like at what they might be and they

:02:17. > :02:21.will add a bit on for if the interest rates rise, that is what

:02:22. > :02:25.they will look at, can you still afford the mortgage if two or three

:02:26. > :02:30.times. It Is part of the mortgage market review. It's a legacy of the

:02:31. > :02:33.credit crunch and the idea is to try to ensure there isn't another

:02:34. > :02:37.financial crisis. Because of the last crisis, lenders

:02:38. > :02:44.are already asking a lot more questions than they used to, and

:02:45. > :02:48.that is without the new rules. Jade recently went to a bank to try

:02:49. > :02:54.to get her first mortgage, she says that rather than an interview, it

:02:55. > :02:57.ended up being more like an interrogation They were asking me

:02:58. > :03:02.how I went out. How often I went out, how much I spent, and I thought

:03:03. > :03:08.why did they need to know my personal details, But they wanted to

:03:09. > :03:12.know more Gym member sip. Cinema, how much I spent on food, you know.

:03:13. > :03:15.And if I had any like commitments, if I wept out with friends and

:03:16. > :03:21.stuff, and cinema, and if I entertained at home, buying stakes

:03:22. > :03:25.and stuff. It was crazy, they wanted to know ins and outs. Those who work

:03:26. > :03:31.in the mortgage business are worried about long delays and fewer loans.

:03:32. > :03:36.But the new system isn't all bad news. The positive impact is it will

:03:37. > :03:41.ensure appropriate lending. That people are only borrowing what they

:03:42. > :03:45.can afford to pay back. That means beg -- being prepared to answer more

:03:46. > :03:51.questions, and if necessary, to make cut backs.

:03:52. > :03:55.Our economics and business editor is with me. Remind us why has the

:03:56. > :03:59.Government brought in these rules? We can hardly forget the enormous

:04:00. > :04:02.housing bubble and crash we had here, which caused misery to

:04:03. > :04:06.thousands of people, and continues to cause misery to people, so this

:04:07. > :04:10.is be lately the regulator saying we need to do something about this to

:04:11. > :04:14.stop it happening again. It wouldn't be a good idea if we went to the

:04:15. > :04:17.lenders and banks and said you need to be more responsible about

:04:18. > :04:23.assessing whether or not people can afford mortgage, and the regulator,

:04:24. > :04:27.the FCA is scathing about some of what went on in 2007, 2008, that

:04:28. > :04:31.period. But they were saying learneds were coming into the market

:04:32. > :04:35.with the expectation that the full expectation that people wouldn't be

:04:36. > :04:43.able to afford the mortgages they got and what, those rogue lensed

:04:44. > :04:48.were doing, they were saying we don't care, we can repossess if they

:04:49. > :04:53.can't pay them. That sound like a mad business model, which it was.

:04:54. > :04:57.But the lenders were saying we can repose sez, sell on, we might make a

:04:58. > :05:03.profit. What the reforms are about is driving out that reckless and

:05:04. > :05:07.irresponsible lending. So, new yes, new hurdles to jump, in particular

:05:08. > :05:12.first time buyer, how will it impact on them? I think probably the impact

:05:13. > :05:16.on first-time buyers will be the least, we saw the lenders are asking

:05:17. > :05:19.these question, so if you are in the market at the moment trying to get

:05:20. > :05:22.your first mortgage you will have been used to getting these

:05:23. > :05:25.questions. It is probably for people who are remortgaging, they are going

:05:26. > :05:32.to now face questions they didn't face in the past, the banks will be

:05:33. > :05:37.asking to see three months worth of salary slip, maybe a look at your P

:05:38. > :05:40.60. That will feel more intrusive. So everybody will feel this. Thank

:05:41. > :05:45.you. The police are appealing for

:05:46. > :05:48.witnesses to a hate crime in South Belfast yesterday. When a

:05:49. > :05:52.23-year-old man was stabbed. He was attacked as he walked into Fane

:05:53. > :05:56.Street off the Lisburn Road round 10.30 in the morning. Two men in

:05:57. > :06:01.their 20s shouted racist abuse, one of them stabbed the victim in the

:06:02. > :06:06.leg with a small knife. The police in North Belfast are

:06:07. > :06:11.investigating a pipebomb attack as a house on Carlisle ask square late

:06:12. > :06:16.last night. It's the second time it has been hit. -- Square. Minor

:06:17. > :06:21.damage but this was a serious attack. The explosion went off just

:06:22. > :06:25.before 11 o'clock last night, lighting up the front rooms of

:06:26. > :06:29.houses opposite, and filling the alleyway with thick smoke. Police

:06:30. > :06:34.believe it was a pipebomb. It is the second time the house has been

:06:35. > :06:38.targeted, this is August last year, when another bomb exploded after

:06:39. > :06:43.being posted through the letter box. Neighbours hoped then the attack was

:06:44. > :06:47.a one off. Now, after last night's explosion, they are asking what

:06:48. > :06:50.next? I have been speaking to people who live here, they tell me they

:06:51. > :06:55.were shocked by the explosion, which was strong enough to rattle the

:06:56. > :06:59.windows of houses two streets away. One woman said she fears for her

:07:00. > :07:03.safety after this latest attack, another man told me he is caring for

:07:04. > :07:08.his wife, currently, who has cancer, she has not been able to sleep since

:07:09. > :07:12.it happened. Police say this wasn't a hate crime, or a race related

:07:13. > :07:15.attack, they are trying to work out a motive and are calling for

:07:16. > :07:19.witnesses to come forward with any information. The man, in his 20s,

:07:20. > :07:27.who lives at the house wasn't injured in the explosion, but he has

:07:28. > :07:32.been left badly shaken. There is a lot more to come this

:07:33. > :07:36.evening, including why electricity pylons in the republic is a top

:07:37. > :07:46.issue in next month's local and European elections.

:07:47. > :07:52.Our children's inheritance has gone. A deal has been tabled to buy

:07:53. > :07:56.Northern Ireland's biggest entertainment -- venue the Odyssey

:07:57. > :08:01.Pavilion in Belfast. The buyers are the cinema operators Omniplex so say

:08:02. > :08:07.they would make it less geared towards bars and nightclubs. Here is

:08:08. > :08:12.our business correspondent. The pavilion part of the odyssey has

:08:13. > :08:17.a sale tag of ?10 million. This offer from Omniplex is believed to

:08:18. > :08:22.fall short of that. But the company is also willing to commit

:08:23. > :08:27.much-needed funds for refurbishment. The family owned Irish firm operates

:08:28. > :08:31.cinemas on both sides of the board e and in Northern Ireland is on

:08:32. > :08:37.something of an investment splurge which could involve a prime piece of

:08:38. > :08:41.Belfast real estate. . Want to ir-I have rate. We are not going in to

:08:42. > :08:46.sit round, we want to make a move on it and make it work, it is a

:08:47. > :08:50.destination that started off as a destination for people of Belfast

:08:51. > :08:55.and people beyond Belfast even, and we really want to ignite that again

:08:56. > :08:59.and get stuck into it and get it working. The Odyssey Pavilion has

:09:00. > :09:04.been up for sale for two years but its problems stretch back even

:09:05. > :09:08.further. In 2010 it was placed into administration, the bank stepped in

:09:09. > :09:11.and took control because of financial problems unGeoffing its

:09:12. > :09:16.original developer. The Pavilion with bars and clubs is a popular

:09:17. > :09:20.nighs spot, but it has had its share of negative headlines.

:09:21. > :09:26.The Omniplex saying it would change things We are not in this business

:09:27. > :09:29.of nightclub, and we are not in the business of 2am you know at the end

:09:30. > :09:34.of the street, that is not us, we want to achieve a family friendly

:09:35. > :09:38.environment. But this requires an important signatory, the Odyssey

:09:39. > :09:42.Trust, the board that manages the complex has yet to agree to it. A

:09:43. > :09:47.statement said the trust continues to monitor the sales process, it is

:09:48. > :09:52.most concerned this important element of the Odyssey is

:09:53. > :09:56.regenerated as soon as possible. The Odyssey Trust is due to consider

:09:57. > :10:06.the offer next month. Only then will it be known if the Odyssey's long

:10:07. > :10:09.search for a buyer is finally over. A 50-year-old Prison Officer has

:10:10. > :10:15.been released op bail after she was arrested on suspicion of possessing

:10:16. > :10:18.an supplying Class A and B drugs at Maghaberry jail. She was detain on

:10:19. > :10:22.Monday and released pending further inquiries.

:10:23. > :10:27.The union NIPSA is threatening industrial action as Belfast City

:10:28. > :10:30.Council votes to outsource its leisure service, a committee

:10:31. > :10:35.rubber-stamped the proposal. The union has warned round 300 jobs

:10:36. > :10:38.could be affected if the full council agrees to change when it

:10:39. > :10:42.meets next month. A car belonging to two missing Dublin men has been

:10:43. > :10:49.takenia I for forensic examination after it was found abandoned near

:10:50. > :10:54.mall gash. Eoin O'Connor and Anthiny Keegan disappeared on Tuesday. Garda

:10:55. > :11:05.divers are searching a lake in Westmeath that is part of a search

:11:06. > :11:10.to find them. A County Down family who have been

:11:11. > :11:14.played by an infestation of rats say they are at their wit's end. They

:11:15. > :11:19.have told Newsline some of them are the size of small dogs. The couple

:11:20. > :11:23.and their four children were aleathered to the rodents by sounds

:11:24. > :11:30.in the attack between the joists of the ceilings. There are pictures of

:11:31. > :11:37.the vermin in our next report. Nobody wants a rat in their house,

:11:38. > :11:40.this family have had nearly 60 since their infestation problem began four

:11:41. > :11:47.years ago. It got to the point where I said get

:11:48. > :11:53.a torch. Go up to the loft and a rat, or my opinion chur dog. And

:11:54. > :11:58.several more since then Yes, I have caught 59 to date. Yesterday was the

:11:59. > :12:02.last one. That was the 59th. Used the poisoned for a while. I found

:12:03. > :12:08.they were in the cavity, the house was since ing, you are talking two

:12:09. > :12:12.weeks longer and blue bottle, the place was infested. So last resort I

:12:13. > :12:17.took a hammer to the cavities in the bathroom and was able to extract two

:12:18. > :12:21.rats from there, dead one, nothing seems to work. Constantly trapping

:12:22. > :12:27.them. Even the family's dog has done her bit but still the problem

:12:28. > :12:30.persists. Despite extensive searches round

:12:31. > :12:36.this garden area, no obvious rat holes have been found, so so far the

:12:37. > :12:39.main suspect in all of this is this extension to the house marked by

:12:40. > :12:44.this line from there to the front. This was built over ten years ago,

:12:45. > :12:49.on top of the existing sewer manhole covers, and it is thought that

:12:50. > :12:56.perhaps that is how they are getting in accessing the cavity walls of the

:12:57. > :12:59.house, and going up into the attic. The housing executive has been out

:13:00. > :13:06.to take a look at the problem. In a statement the executive says: The

:13:07. > :13:17.statement goes on: An environmental health expert is

:13:18. > :13:21.due to visit the home next week. As the search for an answer to this

:13:22. > :13:28.rodent problem goes on, all the family can do is to continue laying

:13:29. > :13:32.traps. Still to come on the programme: A special look at

:13:33. > :13:34.Carnlough's Brendan Rodgers as his Liverpool team edge closer towards

:13:35. > :13:43.winning the Premiership title. There have been warnings recently of

:13:44. > :13:47.possible electricity blackouts unless the north-south

:13:48. > :13:50.interconnector is built. The Republic's energy company, Eirgrid,

:13:51. > :13:57.has yet to seek planning permission for the development. But as our

:13:58. > :13:59.Dublin correspondent Shane Harrison reports, the issue of overground

:14:00. > :14:02.pylons versus underground cabling has become an issue that is

:14:03. > :14:12.featuring in next month's local and European elections.

:14:13. > :14:21.This electricity pylon overlooks several houses. The nearest is 50

:14:22. > :14:25.metres away. It overhead wires can carry 400,000 volts of electricity.

:14:26. > :14:29.The homeowners, Paul and Mike Sheridan, both keen gardeners, say

:14:30. > :14:33.the proposed north-south interconnector will double that

:14:34. > :14:38.capacity. Paula, who regularly monitors the pylon, says it is a

:14:39. > :14:43.monstrous tombstone hanging over their home. What price of we paid

:14:44. > :14:47.for electricity? Our house is worthless. Our health has been

:14:48. > :14:53.destroyed. Our children's inheritances gone. Nobody has

:14:54. > :14:58.considered that in the equation. What price of we paid? Paula was

:14:59. > :15:03.treated for cancer last year, and her husband three years ago. And

:15:04. > :15:09.while they accept it cannot be proven that the pylon caused their

:15:10. > :15:15.illnesses, they believe it did. Those opposed to overhead cables say

:15:16. > :15:18.that pylons are ugly and ruin the landscape, lower property prices and

:15:19. > :15:24.health risk. The Irish government disagrees about health. Expert

:15:25. > :15:30.advice internationally and nationally asserts that there is no

:15:31. > :15:35.reason to be concerned in terms of the health risk. And that advice

:15:36. > :15:39.comes from the World Health Organisation. It is a fairly

:15:40. > :15:48.fantastic proposition to allege that any government or any state agency

:15:49. > :15:53.would engage in infrastructure that posed a health risk to people. The

:15:54. > :15:57.overhead /underground argument will go to the planning process. The

:15:58. > :16:00.Government says that going Underground would put 3% on

:16:01. > :16:08.electricity bills for the next 50 years. But those opposed to pylons

:16:09. > :16:11.and see the issue differently. We've estimated using detailed research

:16:12. > :16:16.that we believe the total cost of the average bill payer of

:16:17. > :16:24.underground will be less than 70 cents per month, 50p. The need for

:16:25. > :16:29.more electricity is not in doubt, but the issue is, what price

:16:30. > :16:32.progress? Next to the eclectic mix of music and dance of the Pan Celtic

:16:33. > :16:37.Festival being held in Londonderry. People have been packing the streets

:16:38. > :16:38.all week to be entertained. To tell us more, here's our north-west

:16:39. > :16:57.reporter, Keiron Tourish. There was a distinctly Celtic

:16:58. > :17:01.feeling in the square as a host of nations showcased their unique

:17:02. > :17:04.cultural offering. Around 50 dancers and musicians from Brittany and

:17:05. > :17:11.France are here taking part in this festival. We are traditional group

:17:12. > :17:21.of Antony, and we are here to celebrate the festival. We wear the

:17:22. > :17:23.traditional costume of Brittany. We want to preserve the culture show

:17:24. > :17:39.the festival our culture. Now in its 43rd year, the Pan Celtic

:17:40. > :17:43.Festival has welcomed visitors from Scotland, Wales, Cornwall and the

:17:44. > :17:51.Isle of Man as well as home-grown talent. Lovely atmosphere. The

:17:52. > :17:58.weather helps. It does your heart good. It is great to have all of the

:17:59. > :18:05.Celtic nations here so that we can appreciate their music as well as

:18:06. > :18:09.our own. The Pan Celtic festival is part of the year-long programme

:18:10. > :18:18.called music city 2014, a legacy event after UK City of Culture year.

:18:19. > :18:21.As well as giving people a wonderful spectacle of culture, dance and

:18:22. > :18:24.attainment, it encourages visitors to our city and gives citizens

:18:25. > :18:31.something to go out and enjoy, so it is a big event for Derry.

:18:32. > :18:36.Well, the weather has been magnificent all week, and many

:18:37. > :18:41.people will be hoping that that continues, as the music will, over

:18:42. > :18:49.the next few days. It will be mellow, and lively, too.

:18:50. > :18:51.Good stuff. Last night we heard from some Liverpool legends backing

:18:52. > :18:54.Carnlough's Brendan Rodgers to lead the club to league success. This

:18:55. > :18:59.evening we hear from the man himself. Stephen Watson tell us

:19:00. > :19:02.more. It's been almost a quarter of a century since Liverpool football

:19:03. > :19:06.club won the English League title. On Sunday, Brendan Rodgers will try

:19:07. > :19:09.and take a huge step closer to Premier League success. Standing in

:19:10. > :19:14.his way one of the world's top managers, who Rodgers knows very

:19:15. > :19:19.well. Jose Mourinho gave the County Antrim man his big break in

:19:20. > :19:27.management. Now the pair go head-to-head. Nial Foster reports.

:19:28. > :19:31.Alan Hansen, lead Championship whenever the eighth time, fantastic

:19:32. > :19:35.record. These scenes used to be a common sight for Liverpool fans, but

:19:36. > :19:44.24 years on, the wait is almost over. We want to win, of course. We

:19:45. > :19:52.are in a brilliant position. But the focus is only on Chelsea. And that

:19:53. > :19:57.is a big game for us. After that, we will get hopefully over that hurdle.

:19:58. > :20:01.As long as we get over it, that is important. And then we will take the

:20:02. > :20:07.next one. We must enjoy it. We are not going to not enjoy it. As for

:20:08. > :20:17.his old mental, what credit to see gift of the Liverpool manager?

:20:18. > :20:27.He is one of the responsible is when things go wrong. So if the strain is

:20:28. > :20:32.starting to show at Stamford Ridge, there is nothing to lose a

:20:33. > :20:35.downfield. I think the pressure is on Manchester City or Chelsea, you

:20:36. > :20:40.spend that money and you expect to win the league. I don't think there

:20:41. > :20:46.is pressure on ourselves, only what we have from within. All players are

:20:47. > :20:50.really enjoying their football. I am enjoying being at the top of the

:20:51. > :20:56.league. It is absolutely wonderful. There is no pressure with it. People

:20:57. > :21:05.say, you must not sleep at night, and I haven't slept better. It is

:21:06. > :21:10.absolutely great. It is why we work. Rodgers can sleep, and the fans can

:21:11. > :21:13.dream. There won't be too much sleep if

:21:14. > :21:16.they win it! Cliftonville will be presented with the League title

:21:17. > :21:18.tomorrow at Solitude following the game against Crusaders. Today,

:21:19. > :21:21.though, the club's record-breaking striker received an individual

:21:22. > :21:24.honour - rather reluctantly. Thomas Kane was at Belfast City Hall to see

:21:25. > :21:38.Joe Gormley named Ulster footballer of the year. Thank you very much.

:21:39. > :21:41.Joe Gormley prefers to do his talking on the pitch. His strike

:21:42. > :21:49.partner became his spokesperson for the day. Getting him to speak for

:21:50. > :21:55.his acceptance speech, which was only a thank you, was an achievement

:21:56. > :22:01.in itself. Obviously a lot of people want to know what you think, because

:22:02. > :22:08.you are playing football. There is a lot of attention around the game.

:22:09. > :22:14.For him, it is a bit longer than anyone else, but it takes awhile get

:22:15. > :22:18.used to it. He is out of contract this summer, and has set his sights

:22:19. > :22:26.on full-time football. For the last two years, we want to have quality

:22:27. > :22:30.on the pitch, so hopefully someone can realise it and take a shot at

:22:31. > :22:36.me. As Cliftonville get ready for their championship party, they will

:22:37. > :22:44.be bidding farewell to their most successful manager ever. There is no

:22:45. > :22:49.question that we will be sad to say goodbye to David Jefferies. He is an

:22:50. > :22:57.outstanding motivator. Tomorrow will be an emotional day. I wish it could

:22:58. > :23:00.have been longer. David Jefferies' success with the former

:23:01. > :23:05.international is said to be installed in the post next week.

:23:06. > :23:10.Tributes have been paid to one of Glasgow Rangers' greatest ever

:23:11. > :23:13.players, who's died. Sandy Jardine, who played over 600 times for the

:23:14. > :23:17.club, lost his battle with cancer aged 65. He was part of the club's

:23:18. > :23:20.European triumph in 1972, and also played 35 times for his country.

:23:21. > :23:24.Here, local fans have been remembering a Rangers legend.

:23:25. > :23:29.Derry's Gaelic footballers will try and land some silverware this

:23:30. > :23:32.weekend. On Sunday they play Dublin in the Division One final of the

:23:33. > :23:35.National League at Croke Park. But according to one of Derry's star

:23:36. > :23:41.players, it's a different trophy they'd really like to win this year.

:23:42. > :23:49.We beat Dublin earlier in the year, yes, but beating them here on

:23:50. > :23:53.national final day is part of what we want to do. We are all about

:23:54. > :23:57.improving, and so far this year we have improved, but the championship

:23:58. > :24:04.is the main aim, as it is for many teams. There are no easy games, and

:24:05. > :24:11.we have a very hot date with Donegal at the end of May, so we are all

:24:12. > :24:18.gearing towards that. There is no better preparation than playing

:24:19. > :24:22.division one. Finally tonight, it is the start of

:24:23. > :24:30.the local road racing season tomorrow. All motorcycling fans will

:24:31. > :24:32.be hoping for some dry weather. So are we. Here is Cecilia with the

:24:33. > :24:47.forecast. It has a bit of bit of -- it has

:24:48. > :24:50.been a bit of a strange one today. The cloud lingering in the Easter

:24:51. > :25:06.semi just started to thing in the last hour. It eases away later, but

:25:07. > :25:12.then more rain sweeps into Southern counties later. Fortunately, it is

:25:13. > :25:15.going to get better as the day goes on tomorrow, but they will be a

:25:16. > :25:23.spell of rain moving northwards tomorrow morning, quite cool macro,

:25:24. > :25:26.cloudy conditions tomorrow. It is already brighter in most places

:25:27. > :25:29.tomorrow, and although there will be one or two showers around, there

:25:30. > :25:34.will be a lot of dry and bright weather. We still have the wind in

:25:35. > :25:39.east, so it will be cooler towards the East Coast, particularly when it

:25:40. > :25:43.is cloudy. Temperatures rising as you come further west, 14 or 15

:25:44. > :25:49.Celsius. And any showers over parts of Tyrone should move away. So

:25:50. > :25:53.hopefully some dry weather tomorrow afternoon. Ending the day on a

:25:54. > :25:56.bright note just about everywhere, and tomorrow night, if you are

:25:57. > :26:02.heading out, it will be fairly dry, the odd shower, and a little cooler

:26:03. > :26:05.once again. For Sunday, we are looking at a mix of sunshine and

:26:06. > :26:08.April showers, but for most of us, there will be more in the way of

:26:09. > :26:13.sunshine compared to showers, and those that do come along will mostly

:26:14. > :26:18.be across parts of the West, where again we will see higher

:26:19. > :26:21.temperatures. Into next week, it is fairly settled to begin with on

:26:22. > :26:23.Monday, but rain looks like affecting us for the middle part of

:26:24. > :26:29.the week. Our late summary is at 10.25. You
