:00:00. > :00:00.to you. There's more throughout the evening on the BBC News Channel. I'm

:00:00. > :00:10.back with Good evening. A man in his 40s has

:00:11. > :00:14.died in a road accident outside Portadown. He was hit by a car after

:00:15. > :00:18.getting out of a taxi on the Gilford Road. It happened at around 2pm this

:00:19. > :00:22.morning. The Police are appealing for anyone who witnessed the

:00:23. > :00:26.accident to contact them. And reports are coming in of a

:00:27. > :00:29.serious accident in County Down - It's believed two vehicles have

:00:30. > :00:33.crashed on the Banbridge road in Dromore. The road has been closed to

:00:34. > :00:36.traffic. There are no other details at the moment.

:00:37. > :00:40.Hundreds of people have taken part in a protest at Belfast City Hall

:00:41. > :00:44.about animal abuse. There were calls for councils and politicians here to

:00:45. > :00:54.put animal rights higher on the agenda. Eunan McConville reports.

:00:55. > :01:02.Plenty of protesters turned up for this demonstration. There have

:01:03. > :01:08.certainly been plenty of protest here at City Hall over the recent

:01:09. > :01:11.past, but this one is very different. Hundreds of people behind

:01:12. > :01:21.me want more to be done to safeguard animal rights.

:01:22. > :01:28.Hi could you abandon this animal? To think that someone could do that

:01:29. > :01:32.to my pads is unthinkable. Until they start taking these people

:01:33. > :01:40.to court and making a big thing of its, why are people going to be

:01:41. > :01:44.afraid to abuse animals? The crowd was told that Northern Ireland has

:01:45. > :01:46.good animal protection legislation but that more can be done to

:01:47. > :01:51.implement it. The welfare of animals in Northern

:01:52. > :01:55.Ireland act was passed in 2011 and according to the USPCA early

:01:56. > :02:00.expectations have not been fulfilled. This legislation is the

:02:01. > :02:06.best kept secret you could ever come across.

:02:07. > :02:08.Out of 26 council websites, only one mentions this legislation. There is

:02:09. > :02:15.total confusion out there. Able do not know when to reign, who to ring

:02:16. > :02:20.or what to do. Northern Ireland is broken up into

:02:21. > :02:28.five areas and it is up to councils to get a point animal welfare

:02:29. > :02:30.officers for those areas. The Department of Agriculture is

:02:31. > :02:34.responsible for farm animals. Whether these protesters will be

:02:35. > :02:38.listened to dash only time will tell.

:02:39. > :02:43.The Taoiseach Enda Kenny has invited Pope Francis to visit Ireland. He

:02:44. > :02:46.made the request when he met the Pontiff in Rome at today's double

:02:47. > :02:50.canonisation of Pope John Paul II and John XXIII. Mr Kenny said that

:02:51. > :02:53.if the invitation was accepted he would hope Pope Francis would also

:02:54. > :03:04.travel to Northern Ireland during his visit.

:03:05. > :03:08.While it is not an official responsibility of the government,

:03:09. > :03:13.the authorities extend an invitation. We will do everything to

:03:14. > :03:16.make that visit a real success. Gaelic Games and Derry have been

:03:17. > :03:19.well beaten by Dublin in their National Football League final at

:03:20. > :03:28.Croke Park. Earlier Monaghan beat Donegal in the Division Two decider.

:03:29. > :03:31.Michael Markey reports. Derry fans young and old travel to

:03:32. > :03:38.Croke Park with more hope than expectation. After four minutes, or

:03:39. > :03:50.boiling gave them an early lead. However their enthusiasm was short

:03:51. > :03:54.lived. We knew there would be a massive

:03:55. > :04:00.test against us. We don't want to give Dublin a lead like that. The

:04:01. > :04:07.all-Ireland champions picked up where they left off in the second

:04:08. > :04:13.half and started to score. They gave Dublin a 12 point lead.

:04:14. > :04:20.We know we can play a lot better than that. With so many young lads,

:04:21. > :04:25.you have to occasionally get a bad one out of the way. I hope we will

:04:26. > :04:33.learn a lot from today and perform a lot better when we come back to

:04:34. > :04:39.Croke Park. In every piece of last year's Ulster

:04:40. > :04:42.championship final, Monaghan won by six points to secure the division

:04:43. > :04:45.two title. Now this week, BBC Newsline will be

:04:46. > :04:48.reporting from Scotland ahead of September's vote on independence.

:04:49. > :04:56.Our reporter Kevin Magee is in Glasgow.

:04:57. > :05:01.We will be testing the appetite for Scottish independence, both here in

:05:02. > :05:06.Ibrox and across the city. At Celtic Park, both sets of supporters have

:05:07. > :05:14.traditional links with Northern Ireland. Will that influence how

:05:15. > :05:17.they vote? It is the right time for Scotland to

:05:18. > :05:24.be Independent and do everything for ourselves.

:05:25. > :05:28.We are voting no. I am British through and through.

:05:29. > :05:33.Coverage begins on radio Ulster in the morning.

:05:34. > :05:35.And Donna Traynor will be reporting live from Glasgow on tomorrow's

:05:36. > :05:46.programme and from Edinburgh on Tuesday. Now the weather forecast.

:05:47. > :05:53.Good evening. It has been a pretty great day across many parts of

:05:54. > :05:57.Northern Ireland. This will probably be the last day that we see decent

:05:58. > :06:02.spells of sunshine. As the week goes on, we are looking at increasing

:06:03. > :06:06.amount of cloud with rain and showers. It will also be turning

:06:07. > :06:11.noticeably colder. Today has been very nice with just one or two

:06:12. > :06:15.showers close to the south-west. They are fading away and many of us

:06:16. > :06:19.will experience a dry end to the day. Cloud will be bringing spells

:06:20. > :06:27.of light and patchy rain from the East. As a result, it is a fairly

:06:28. > :06:33.mild nights lower than six or seven degrees. Tomorrow will be a cloudy

:06:34. > :06:37.day with some rain around fourth top almost anywhere it could be quite a

:06:38. > :06:42.damp and murky start. Writer skies over the northern half of Scotland

:06:43. > :06:46.and for West Wales and the south-west, but these areas are

:06:47. > :06:51.still prone to a few showers. Generally cloudy elsewhere across

:06:52. > :06:54.the country. In the forest south of England they are still prone to some

:06:55. > :06:59.have read -- heavy, thundery downpours. In Northern Ireland is

:07:00. > :07:04.not a great deal has changed. We still have cloudy skies with patches

:07:05. > :07:09.of rain and drizzle raking out almost anywhere. Particularly for

:07:10. > :07:13.Northern areas. Not amounting to a great deal and temperatures are not

:07:14. > :07:17.bad at 13 or 14 degrees. Through the week, cloud and showers and after

:07:18. > :07:21.Wednesday the temperatures will fall.

:07:22. > :07:25.Our next BBC Newsline bulletin is at 22.15pm. Until then you can keep up

:07:26. > :07:29.to date with local news on BBC Radio Ulster or on the local news online

:07:30. > :07:34.service. From everyone on the BBC Newsline team, goodbye.
