:00:00. > :00:09.it is Good evening.

:00:10. > :00:13.The Sinn Fein President Gerry Adams is still being questioned by police

:00:14. > :00:16.about the murder of mother of ten, Jean McConville more than 40years

:00:17. > :00:20.ago. He was arrested last night after voluntarily going to Antrim

:00:21. > :00:23.police station to be interviewed. Mr Adams has always denied any

:00:24. > :00:34.involvement in the murder. Our reporter Chris Page is in Antrim for

:00:35. > :00:38.us tonight. Chris. Gerry Adams has now been under

:00:39. > :00:43.arrest at Antrim police station for more than 24 hours. This is the

:00:44. > :00:46.first time in the modern era that the leader of one of Ireland's main

:00:47. > :00:52.political parties has been questioned by police under

:00:53. > :00:57.circumstances likely. -- like these. Shortly before

:00:58. > :01:01.arriving at Antrim police station with his solicitor Gerry Adams spoke

:01:02. > :01:04.to our tape. I am going forward early to talk to the PSNI because

:01:05. > :01:11.there has been a lengthy malicious campaign against me. I will tell the

:01:12. > :01:15.PSNI that I am innocent, totally, of any part in the abduction, the

:01:16. > :01:18.killing was the burial of Jean McConville. Detectives investigating

:01:19. > :01:22.the abduction and murder of the mother of ten were waiting for the

:01:23. > :01:26.Sinn Fein leader when he arrived. That is because the timing had been

:01:27. > :01:30.arranged in advance after talks between the police and his

:01:31. > :01:34.solicitor. On arrival Gerry Adams was arrested and interviewed under

:01:35. > :01:37.caution. He spent the night in a police cell and questioning resume

:01:38. > :01:41.this morning. Sinn Fein has complained about the timing of the

:01:42. > :01:44.arrest, pointing out that its party leader offered to meet the police

:01:45. > :01:50.five weeks ago. What other conclusion can I any other come to?

:01:51. > :01:55.In the mouth of an election, the leader of a political party which is

:01:56. > :02:02.experiencing huge growth all over the island of Ireland finds himself

:02:03. > :02:07.under arrest. The First Minister rejected that claim. He chose the

:02:08. > :02:10.timing, he chose to be during an election campaign. The police must

:02:11. > :02:18.not allow the election campaign to end anyway deflect them from their

:02:19. > :02:22.duty that they have two the community and victims. The Chief

:02:23. > :02:26.Constable refused to be drawn to date. It would be inappropriate for

:02:27. > :02:31.me to comment on any investigation other than to say it will be

:02:32. > :02:35.objective and methodical. Police sources rejected the allegation that

:02:36. > :02:37.it was aimed at causing maximum embarrassment for Sinn Fein. The

:02:38. > :02:42.police say they have to follow a proper process to be in a position

:02:43. > :02:46.to put as much evidence as possible to a suspect during interview.

:02:47. > :02:50.Detectives interviewing the suspect when they believe the time is right,

:02:51. > :02:58.not when the person believes they are ready. Terry Adams spoke to

:02:59. > :03:04.police after Ivor Bell was related -- arrested in March. He was charged

:03:05. > :03:09.on the basis of an interview he gave. Former IRA leader Brendan

:03:10. > :03:15.Hughes also gave an interview but has since died. One day ) of Gerry

:03:16. > :03:17.Adams, the two men are seen together inside the Maze prison. He

:03:18. > :03:23.implicated the Sinn Fein leader in the murder. There is only one man

:03:24. > :03:27.who could give the order that woman could be executed and that man is

:03:28. > :03:32.now the head of Sinn Fein. Gerry Adams was asked about the claim in a

:03:33. > :03:38.BBC documentary last year. Did you give the order for the execution of

:03:39. > :03:42.Jean McConville? No, I had no active part to play in either the

:03:43. > :03:48.abduction, killing or burial of Jean McConville or any of these other

:03:49. > :03:52.individuals and Brendan was telling lies. The interviews by Brendan

:03:53. > :03:56.Hughes and Ivor Bell and other republicans were made available to

:03:57. > :03:59.detectives investigating Jean McConville's murder. It is

:04:00. > :04:05.understood the Sinn Fein leader would be questioned about any claims

:04:06. > :04:14.made about his involvement. How long can the police detain Mr

:04:15. > :04:17.Adams? Mr Adams is being held under the Terrorism Act. Under that

:04:18. > :04:23.legislation suspects are initially held for 24 hours and then a senior

:04:24. > :04:27.police officer can decide if they can be held for another 24 hours. We

:04:28. > :04:32.are past that stage and Gerry Adams is into his second 24 hours in

:04:33. > :04:34.custody. The time runs out at about eight o'clock tomorrow night. If the

:04:35. > :04:38.police want to detain him longer they have to go to court and a judge

:04:39. > :04:43.will decide whether they will be allowed to do that. Mr Adams has

:04:44. > :04:47.denied ever being in the IRA and has denied ever having anything to do

:04:48. > :04:51.with the murder of Jean McConville. Martin McGuinness today claimed that

:04:52. > :04:55.the arrest was due to what he claimed was the dark side of

:04:56. > :04:58.policing. The Prime Minister David Cameron denied that. Tonight, Mr

:04:59. > :05:09.McGuinness and Mr Cameron has spoken by telephone. Sinn Fein say that Mr

:05:10. > :05:14.McGuinness claimed to Mr Cameron that the police pursue some cases

:05:15. > :05:17.more than others. Tonight detectives are still questioning Gerry Adams.

:05:18. > :05:20.Jean McConville's murder has become one of the most notorious incidents

:05:21. > :05:24.of the Troubles. After being abducted and shot by the IRA in 1972

:05:25. > :05:28.her remains were only found decades later on a beach in County Louth.

:05:29. > :05:31.Our reporter Conor Macauley spoke to her son Michael today. He began by

:05:32. > :05:40.describing how, as an 11-year-old boy, he witnessed his mother being

:05:41. > :05:47.taken away. I remember that night, between half

:05:48. > :05:55.five and six o'clock, there was a knock at the door. We answered the

:05:56. > :06:02.door. A group of people came in, some with masks and some without.

:06:03. > :06:06.The people without masks, me and my brothers and sisters knew them

:06:07. > :06:17.because they lived in the Divis Flats complex. These people knew us

:06:18. > :06:23.by name. There was panic. We wrapped ourselves around our mother and we

:06:24. > :06:30.didn't want them to take her. Do the children say anything about their

:06:31. > :06:39.mother? Some nights they say, I want my mother back. She was panicking,

:06:40. > :06:47.she was crying. They put my mother into the back of the van and one of

:06:48. > :06:51.the cars drove away first and then the van followed. That was the last

:06:52. > :06:57.any of us ever saw of her. The police know what I know and what

:06:58. > :07:01.certain members of the family know, but I've never given a statement to

:07:02. > :07:16.the police and the reason for that is because I know there could be

:07:17. > :07:21.repercussions. Will have more on Gerry Adams' arrest just this

:07:22. > :07:27.bulletin. -- we will have more in The View.

:07:28. > :07:30.A 47-year-old man has been arrested after police found a substantial

:07:31. > :07:33.amount of explosives in north Belfast. They were found during

:07:34. > :07:35.searches of a flat in the New Lodge area by officers investigating

:07:36. > :07:39.dissident republican activity. A County Antrim farmer has been sent

:07:40. > :07:41.to jail for animal cruelty offences. Michael Agnew of Ballynease Road

:07:42. > :07:45.near Portglenone was given six months for a range of offences. It's

:07:46. > :07:47.the first time anyone has been jailed under animal welfare

:07:48. > :07:51.legislation that came into effect here in 2011.

:07:52. > :07:55.Turning to sport and in rugby, there was a shock defeat for the Ospreys

:07:56. > :07:58.away to Zebre in Italy tonight - a result that has big implications for

:07:59. > :08:01.Ulster. The Welsh side's 30-27 defeat means that Ulster now need

:08:02. > :08:07.just one point from their remaining two games in the Pro12 to qualify

:08:08. > :08:08.for the play-offs. They face Leinster at Ravenhill tomorrow

:08:09. > :08:19.night. Now let's get a look at the weather

:08:20. > :08:24.prospects with Cecilia Daly. Hello. It has been a shocking day

:08:25. > :08:29.for the 1st of May. Temperatures in some parts of County Antrim were

:08:30. > :08:33.sitting at six or seven degrees this afternoon. That is more typical of

:08:34. > :08:38.February. At least it is tried for the rest of the night. There is a

:08:39. > :08:41.lot of cloud around. Where it thins and breaks over parts of County

:08:42. > :08:48.Antrim, it could get chilly. Temperatures dropping to 23 degrees,

:08:49. > :08:53.leading to frost on the grass. Friday is going to be a much better

:08:54. > :08:56.day. There will be a lot of dry weather and it will brighten up at

:08:57. > :09:01.times. You should see temperatures at least in double figures. There

:09:02. > :09:05.will still be a chill in the air, especially from the breeze, which

:09:06. > :09:10.will be noticeable among the East Coast. Eastern counties will see the

:09:11. > :09:15.best of the sunshine. Further west you are, the cloudier. That is

:09:16. > :09:20.because of this area of rain coming in from the Atlantic nudging towards

:09:21. > :09:24.the south west of Ireland tomorrow afternoon. Fine weather for many

:09:25. > :09:27.parts of Britain. One or two showers around but not the heavy rain of

:09:28. > :09:33.today. Cold over parts of Scotland and North East England with

:09:34. > :09:35.temperatures in single figures. Temperatures for northern Ireland

:09:36. > :09:42.tomorrow afternoon around 12, perhaps 13 degrees, closer to the

:09:43. > :09:50.average. Any sunshine across the East. Through the weekend, Saturday

:09:51. > :09:56.sees some drizzle or light rain, otherwise dry, and sunshine on

:09:57. > :09:57.Monday. Keep up-to-date online and follow us on Facebook and Twitter.

:09:58. > :10:00.Good night. It's shocking it'd happen

:10:01. > :10:10.in a public place. I don't find it funny,

:10:11. > :10:13.but I don't find it offensive. It really is vile.

:10:14. > :10:15.Shock value sells. Men are even less tolerant of women

:10:16. > :10:18.than they were before. The hatred of women.

:10:19. > :10:22.Some people are offended.
