:00:00. > :00:00.report from South Africa, on the impact of the long-running Oscar

:00:00. > :00:10.Pistorius murder trial. Now it's time

:00:11. > :00:17.Good evening. 15 extra nursing staff have been brought in to the

:00:18. > :00:20.Emergency Department at the Royal Victoria Hospital in Belfast tonight

:00:21. > :00:24.to deal with an increase in the number of people looking to be

:00:25. > :00:27.treated. The Belfast Trust has told us additional beds have also been

:00:28. > :00:30.made available to try to ease what it calls "significant pressure". At

:00:31. > :00:34.one stage around 100 people were waiting to be seen by a doctor.

:00:35. > :00:38.That's now down to 70. At the moment there are 19 people on trolleys. One

:00:39. > :00:43.patient waited for 11 hours to be admitted. In January a major

:00:44. > :00:46.incident was declared at the hospital before extra staff had to

:00:47. > :00:50.be called in - but the BBC understands this evening is not on

:00:51. > :00:53.the same scale. The Chief Constable has rejected allegations by Sinn

:00:54. > :00:58.Fein that the arrest of Gerry Adams was the work of a "dark side" within

:00:59. > :01:00.the police. Matt Baggott said questioning the motivation or

:01:01. > :01:08.impartiality of the police was unfair and inappropriate. There's

:01:09. > :01:17.some flash photography in this report from Vincent Kearney. Gerry

:01:18. > :01:20.Adams was released on Sunday night, four days after what his party

:01:21. > :01:23.claimed was a politically motivated arrest. A short time later he

:01:24. > :01:26.criticised those behind the decision to detain him. It is the old guard

:01:27. > :01:46.using the old methods, those who authorised this didn't make the

:01:47. > :01:49.right strategic decision. Last week, Martin McGuinness suggested Sinn

:01:50. > :01:53.Fein could withdraw its support for the police because of the actions of

:01:54. > :01:57.what he called the dark side of the PSNI. There is a section of the PSNI

:01:58. > :02:00.who have a different agenda. A negative and destructive agenda, to

:02:01. > :02:03.both the peace process and Sinn Fein. The Chief Constable today

:02:04. > :02:06.defended the actions of his officers. In a statement, Matt

:02:07. > :02:09.Baggott said the accusation of a dark side within the PSNI is one he

:02:10. > :02:12.refutes. He said questioning the motivation and impartiality of the

:02:13. > :02:15.police was unfair and inappropriate. The Chief Constable said the arrest

:02:16. > :02:19.and questioning of Gerry Adams was legitimate and lawful, and that it

:02:20. > :02:25.would have been wrong to treat him differently to any other citizen.

:02:26. > :02:28.The statement said the police are tasked with following the evidence

:02:29. > :02:32.without fear or favour in accordance with the law, and that the PSNI will

:02:33. > :02:48.continue to do so regardless of any undue pressures. The First Minister

:02:49. > :03:04.today said the DPP would have tried to exclude Sinn Fein from the

:03:05. > :03:10.assembly. We would not be slow in bringing forward a motion for

:03:11. > :03:12.exclusion, and if Sinn Fein had not corrected its position, that motion

:03:13. > :03:16.would have gone down. Peter Robinson is also seeking a meeting with the

:03:17. > :03:19.Chief Constable over reports that the Sinn Fein president is unlikely

:03:20. > :03:29.to face any charges unless new evidence emerges. . A woman in her

:03:30. > :03:32.80s has died in a car crash in County Down. It happened in

:03:33. > :03:35.Rathfriland this afternoon when her car was in collision with a lorry on

:03:36. > :03:38.Downpatrick Street. The woman who died was from the area. Her name

:03:39. > :03:41.hasn't been released yet. Police officers have been meeting community

:03:42. > :03:43.representatives and councillors to discuss recent hate crimes in

:03:44. > :03:47.Belfast, and are reviewing the number of patrols in some areas.

:03:48. > :03:50.Helen Jones reports. Loyalist East Belfast, and another attack on a

:03:51. > :03:54.Polish family. I run half past 11 last night a 27-year-old man who

:03:55. > :03:57.lives here look to the sound of breaking glass. He says he saw three

:03:58. > :04:01.hooded men smashed the windscreen of his, before running off. I have been

:04:02. > :04:04.speaking to the man who owns the property, he lives here with his

:04:05. > :04:08.mother. He pays the mortgage and taxes and works in Lisburn. He says

:04:09. > :04:12.he is very scared, he has nowhere else to go because he owns that

:04:13. > :04:14.property. The PSNI held a meeting today to address concerns.

:04:15. > :04:19.Representatives of the Polish community, politicians and other

:04:20. > :04:22.interested parties were there. Many of the companies employing Polish

:04:23. > :04:27.people could not manage without them. They have brought such

:04:28. > :04:29.wonderful skills to our economy and have contributed vastly. It is

:04:30. > :04:50.scandalous what is happening, it must be stopped. Words are no longer

:04:51. > :04:57.enough important issues that require a very significant response. I think

:04:58. > :05:03.everyone needs to decide that this is not good enough. These attacks

:05:04. > :05:07.are not helping the image of an area which is trying hard to move out of

:05:08. > :05:12.the shadow of the Troubles. I want it to stop happening. We are trying

:05:13. > :05:16.to create a welcoming community for everybody to live in, to work in and

:05:17. > :05:20.to visit, and it doesn't make that a good place to be. There has been a

:05:21. > :05:38.70% increase in the number of racially motivated attacks, it is

:05:39. > :05:50.estimated. There is growing speculation that an American company

:05:51. > :05:55.will be facing itself in Northern Ireland and making airline seats.

:05:56. > :05:58.Two men from Northern Ireland have been jailed for smuggling nearly

:05:59. > :06:00.200,000 litres of alcohol into the UK. 55-year-old Kieran Patrick

:06:01. > :06:03.Hughes from Portadown, was sentenced to six years and 44-year-old William

:06:04. > :06:06.Canning, from Ballykelly, was sentenced to 27 months in prison.

:06:07. > :06:13.They were found guilty of faking paperwork using details stolen from

:06:14. > :06:16.legitimate companies. -- There's growing speculation that a US

:06:17. > :06:20.aerospace firm which employs more than 800 people in Kilkeel is up for

:06:21. > :06:22.sale. B/E Aerospace says it has hired an investment bank to advise

:06:23. > :06:42.it on a possible sale or merger of the firm. The County Down factory

:06:43. > :06:45.makes aircraft seats. The train and bus company Translink has announced

:06:46. > :06:47.that its new Chief Executive is to be David Strahan. He was previously

:06:48. > :06:51.the Managing Director of Phoenix gas and replaces Catherine Mason who was

:06:52. > :06:54.Northern Ireland's highest paid public service official, earning

:06:55. > :06:56.just under ?200,000 a year. The Assembly welcomed it's newest MLA

:06:57. > :07:00.today. Independent Claire Sugden took the seat once held by the late

:07:01. > :07:03.David McClarty. Miss Sugden worked with the former Ulster Unionist at

:07:04. > :07:06.Stormont. Mr McClarty retained his seat as an independent in the 2011

:07:07. > :07:09.Assembly election after leaving the UUP. Miss Sugden told Stormont Today

:07:10. > :07:16.that she didn't see herself joining a political party. Thomas Kane got

:07:17. > :07:27.some coaching from Stephen Roche, the only man to win this was the

:07:28. > :07:35.just race from Ireland. Do you have any debts? Just hanging. Even though

:07:36. > :07:40.the road looks intimidating just take it at your own time and place

:07:41. > :07:43.and you get there in the end. The important thing is to enjoy it. This

:07:44. > :07:46.was only a small section of the route that the professionals will

:07:47. > :08:03.write during the Giro d'Italia but every incline seems never ending.

:08:04. > :08:06.-will ride. As it went on my legs became heavier and every revolution

:08:07. > :08:10.of the pedal was tougher and it felt like the finish line would never

:08:11. > :08:14.come. It did not help that I was with the group of riders that took a

:08:15. > :08:17.wrong turn, adding a few more painstaking miles to the journey.

:08:18. > :08:21.Always find out where you are supposed to go! As the rest of the

:08:22. > :08:24.pack and Stephen had broken away far into the distance I was starting to

:08:25. > :08:28.struggle more and more. There were no records broken but eventually at

:08:29. > :08:42.one time after the majority of the group I arrived at my final

:08:43. > :08:46.destination. --and a long time. The scenery was beautiful and the

:08:47. > :08:49.weather was beautiful but as a non-cyclist that was one of the

:08:50. > :08:59.toughest things I have ever had to do. And to coincide with the pink

:09:00. > :09:02.theme of the Giro race many places have been changing colour. We got

:09:03. > :09:04.these pictures this evening of the giant cranes at Harland and Wolff in

:09:05. > :09:14.Belfast. It will be reasonably dry here

:09:15. > :09:21.overnight and temperatures holding up in most places. Tomorrow it looks

:09:22. > :09:25.like we're in for another fairly rainy days you will need to keep the

:09:26. > :09:29.umbrella handy and the food on the back of your court will be more up

:09:30. > :09:33.than down, I suspect. It may be drive when you are leaving home and

:09:34. > :09:36.you may see some brightness for a time, especially in parts of County

:09:37. > :09:55.Antrim that overall it will be quite cool and cloudy. The rain bullocks

:09:56. > :10:02.then eased into northern England and Scotland --will extend east. It will

:10:03. > :10:05.be a cool and breezy day for Northern Ireland with more rain than

:10:06. > :10:10.not and temperatures will struggle to get to around 30 degrees in areas

:10:11. > :10:14.and the rain will only slowly stop towards the latter part of the day.

:10:15. > :10:18.It will stay and settle through the rest of the working week and weekend

:10:19. > :10:26.and through Thursday and Friday we have heavy showers and some fairly

:10:27. > :10:29.blustery winds as well. On Saturday and 80 of low pressure bring
