:00:07. > :00:12.Good evening. Two men have been jailed in connection with the death

:00:13. > :00:16.of Lee Smyth, who died after being assaulted in Armagh four years ago.

:00:17. > :00:19.Mr Smyth fell into a coma after the attack and died two years later.

:00:20. > :00:22.Michael Wilson, aged 23 and from Marlacoo Road in Tandragee and

:00:23. > :00:25.Gareth McKinney, who's 24 and from Charles Park in Portadown, were

:00:26. > :00:28.sentenced to seven years and six years respectively. Both were

:00:29. > :00:50.originally charged with murder, but changed their pleas to manslaughter.

:00:51. > :00:54.Victims and families of those who died in the 1974 Dublin and Monaghan

:00:55. > :00:56.bombings are to sue the British government for damages. They claim

:00:57. > :00:59.the attacks were carried by loyalists with government collusion

:01:00. > :01:03.and that there was a cover up. The Public Prosecution Service says

:01:04. > :01:11.it will not oppose an appeal by one of the so-called Colombia Three

:01:12. > :01:20.against a weapons conviction. Nearly 300 people were injured in the

:01:21. > :01:23.attack, including this man, who says those taking action against the

:01:24. > :01:40.British government just want the truth. I do think anyone wants to go

:01:41. > :01:47.down this road, especially as we are friendly with the British monarchy

:01:48. > :01:52.now. But the victims and families of those who died say they feel they

:01:53. > :01:57.have no alternative, as their solicitor explains. The families

:01:58. > :02:00.have one out of options. They have tried to get access to the

:02:01. > :02:08.information that will give them closure. They have tried the High

:02:09. > :02:15.Court, the Supreme Court, everything. They have no choice but

:02:16. > :02:18.to litigate now. The action is being taken against the Ministry of

:02:19. > :02:31.Defence, the PSNI and the Northern Ireland's ministry. -- Northern

:02:32. > :02:35.Ireland ministry. An east Belfast grammar school has

:02:36. > :02:38.been fined thousands of pounds for a series of health and safety breaches

:02:39. > :02:40.over asbestos. As our education correspondent Maggie Taggart

:02:41. > :02:43.reports, the affected building had been used by the prep school and a

:02:44. > :02:46.kindergarden. The prep department at this school was in a separate

:02:47. > :02:50.building from the main school and when it closed, a childcare company

:02:51. > :02:56.moved in. An asbestos survey in 2004 did not include that building, that

:02:57. > :03:01.during checks in 2012, asbestos was found in the building. It was later

:03:02. > :03:07.removed. The Belfast Crown Court has now find the school 7500 pounds,

:03:08. > :03:13.plus costs. The school pleaded guilty of failing to protect

:03:14. > :03:19.employees and non-employees. There was concern that young children were

:03:20. > :03:22.being exposed to asbestos. A man's been charged with possession

:03:23. > :03:25.of firearms and ammunition with intent to endanger life. The

:03:26. > :03:28.43-year-old was arrested as part of a police investigation into recent

:03:29. > :03:41.hate crimes. He'll appear in court tomorrow.

:03:42. > :03:44.The Public Prosecution Service says it will not oppose an appeal by one

:03:45. > :03:47.of the so-called Colombia Three against a weapons conviction. Martin

:03:48. > :03:51.McCauley was seriously wounded and a teenager was killed when police

:03:52. > :03:55.opened fire on a hayshed in County Armagh in 1982. It has since emerged

:03:56. > :03:57.that a secret MI5 recording of the incident wasn't made available to

:03:58. > :04:02.his trial. The police claimed that Martin McCauley confronted them with

:04:03. > :04:09.a rifle at his hay shed over 30 years ago. He was seriously injured

:04:10. > :04:17.and his friend was killed when RUC officers opened fire. Martin

:04:18. > :04:23.McCauley insisted he and his friend were not armed and that police

:04:24. > :04:27.opened fire without warning. The police told the court that was not

:04:28. > :04:34.true. Years after his conviction, it was revealed that MI5 had a

:04:35. > :04:39.listening device hidden in the hay shed at the time of the shooting

:04:40. > :04:44.that recorded what happened. That recording would have established

:04:45. > :04:50.whether or not the police shouted any warnings. The existence of the

:04:51. > :04:56.recording was not made known to be caught at the time of his trial and

:04:57. > :05:00.the tape was later destroyed. Last year his case was referred to be

:05:01. > :05:04.Court of Appeal on the basis that significant material have been

:05:05. > :05:10.withheld from the judge. In a dramatic development today, the

:05:11. > :05:20.judge said he had been instructed to read a statement. It said that

:05:21. > :05:31.information had been withheld from the Director of Public Prosecutions

:05:32. > :05:34.and the defence lawyers. Martin McCauley was not in court to hear

:05:35. > :05:41.the prosecution statement today as he faces extradition to South

:05:42. > :05:51.America if he returns to Northern Ireland. He was one of three men

:05:52. > :05:59.arrested in Colombia and was accused of being part of the IRA. He was

:06:00. > :06:05.convicted and sentenced to 17 years, but fled to the Republic to

:06:06. > :06:09.avoid prison. A tenth man has pleaded guilty to a

:06:10. > :06:12.lesser charge in connection with the death of a Catholic community

:06:13. > :06:14.worker. John McGrath of Knock Road in Ballymoney had been charged with

:06:15. > :06:18.the manslaughter and attempted murder of Kevin McDaid. Mr McDaid

:06:19. > :06:21.died after he was attacked near his home in Coleraine five years ago.

:06:22. > :06:24.Two defendants still face the more serious charges.

:06:25. > :06:27.The firm that runs the power station where hundreds of thousands of

:06:28. > :06:30.juvenile eels died over easter has said there was an unprecedented run

:06:31. > :06:33.of the elvers. The endangered fish died in traps that were meant to

:06:34. > :06:46.help them get past a hydro-electric dam in County Donegal and into Lough

:06:47. > :06:52.Erne. The dam at Catherine falls stands in

:06:53. > :07:02.the way of the eels reaching Lough Erne. They should be collected in

:07:03. > :07:09.this tank and then distributed around the water. The eels start

:07:10. > :07:17.their journey many miles away. When they drift across the ocean and

:07:18. > :07:30.breach island, they transform into eels. Around 3000 of them died in

:07:31. > :07:40.the trap here last month. We estimated 150 kilograms of elvers,

:07:41. > :07:46.which represents 90% of the entire 12 run. These were not detected

:07:47. > :07:57.until the next morning. Because overs run at night, the traps should

:07:58. > :08:10.be checked at night. ESP said it has successfully transported elvers

:08:11. > :08:29.already. An investigation will continue. Time now for the weather.

:08:30. > :08:36.Good evening. Things are looking settled over the next couple of

:08:37. > :08:40.days, but it does not look as if it will hold throughout the weekend.

:08:41. > :08:46.Some drizzly showers, but generally dry and milder. There will be a

:08:47. > :08:51.warmer feel to be air over the next couple of days with dry weather to

:08:52. > :08:59.come. To begin with, it will be great in places, but the sunshine

:09:00. > :09:03.will develop throughout the morning. A quiet which are generally across

:09:04. > :09:08.Britain and Ireland. The only real wind is across the north of

:09:09. > :09:14.Scotland. Maybe some dampness across the Scottish Borders and North East

:09:15. > :09:21.England. The cloud will break up and temperatures will respond nicely. We

:09:22. > :09:27.should hit temperatures of 18 or 19 degrees tomorrow, maybe even 20. On

:09:28. > :09:33.Friday there is a lot of fine weather to come. Temperatures will

:09:34. > :09:39.be the same. Slightly more breeze on Friday. This weather front will

:09:40. > :09:48.start poking into Donegal and it will head south on Saturday. On

:09:49. > :09:54.Saturday in the north-west there will be some damp weather, but dry

:09:55. > :09:58.spells in the afternoon, so not a complete wash-out. That is it for

:09:59. > :10:03.now, good night.
