:00:00. > :00:16.Good evening. The headlines on BBC Newsline:

:00:17. > :00:20.Beaten and terrified - we hear from the men who say racist hate attacks

:00:21. > :00:34.I still remember the face of that fellow, the Hague on his face, the

:00:35. > :00:37.rage was coming out from his face and I do not know why.

:00:38. > :00:40.A court hears a woman's claims of sexual abuse

:00:41. > :00:45.I'm live at Belfast City Hall with the latest on the new Lord Mayor.

:00:46. > :00:49.And as the new season gets under way, can we look forward to some

:00:50. > :00:57.summer weather this week? Find out shortly.

:00:58. > :01:00.Two men injured in a racist attack at their home in

:01:01. > :01:03.north Belfast yesterday say they are going to leave Northern Ireland.

:01:04. > :01:06.One of the men, who are originally from Pakistan, was treated

:01:07. > :01:09.in hospital after being attacked at a house in Parkmount Street.

:01:10. > :01:11.Hours earlier a bottle had been thrown through

:01:12. > :01:22.Kelly Bonner's report contains some strong language.

:01:23. > :01:28.Back home after a terrifying ordeal, yesterday afternoon a man approached

:01:29. > :01:33.Muhammad Asif Khattak outside his home, screaming racial abuse before

:01:34. > :01:37.assaulting him. He managed to get into the house but two men kicked

:01:38. > :01:45.the door down and followed him inside. I managed to hide myself in

:01:46. > :01:51.the toilet and I closed the door. He pushed the door and I was so scared

:01:52. > :01:57.at the time and then he started beating me. He started punching me

:01:58. > :02:06.and kicking me. He beat me everywhere, with a bottle in his

:02:07. > :02:11.hand, he was beating me on my head. His friend was also attacked as he

:02:12. > :02:15.tried to defend him. I still remember the face of that fellow,

:02:16. > :02:23.the rage was coming out of his face and I do not know why. What was he

:02:24. > :02:29.saying to you? Racially abusing us, saying dirty Arabs, get out of our

:02:30. > :02:34.street, we do not want you here. This was the second attack on the

:02:35. > :02:38.men in 12 hours. Earlier yesterday morning a bottle was thrown through

:02:39. > :02:42.the window of their house. There was controversy over comments made about

:02:43. > :02:46.Islam by Pastor James McConnell and the First Minister. Muhammad Asif

:02:47. > :02:53.Khattak called on Peter Robinson to help the future situation. That is a

:02:54. > :03:01.fire he let in the jungle and I am one of the victims of that fire ash

:03:02. > :03:05.Mike defused the situation. If the First Minister came flawed and he

:03:06. > :03:10.apologised on public, on air to the Muslim community, people would be

:03:11. > :03:16.really happy. The MP for the area come down to the attack. Having

:03:17. > :03:21.called with the two gentlemen, I am appalled at what happened to them.

:03:22. > :03:25.This should never have happened and I share the outrage many of the

:03:26. > :03:30.people living in this area feel. The rest of us are not racists, indeed

:03:31. > :03:33.there are people living in that street of other ethnic minorities

:03:34. > :03:39.and they feel outraged at being branded in this way. A 57-year-old

:03:40. > :03:45.man was remanded and has been released on bail. An 18-year-old

:03:46. > :03:49.woman has been charged with disorderly behaviour and will appear

:03:50. > :03:54.in court. Earlier today, Pastor James McConnell arrived at the house

:03:55. > :03:59.to offer the two men his support. He said he was ashamed and angry at the

:04:00. > :04:04.attack, urging the two men to stay here in Northern Ireland. But in the

:04:05. > :04:06.last hour, the two men have moved out of the house and look set to

:04:07. > :04:09.leave Northern Ireland. The number of hate crimes reported

:04:10. > :04:11.to the police has increased But figures show there are

:04:12. > :04:16.very few prosecutions under And as BBC Newsline's Tara Mills

:04:17. > :04:32.reports, that's in stark contrast to We must all stand up against six

:04:33. > :04:35.Arianism and racism. -- sectarianism.

:04:36. > :04:37.Saturday's rally was prompted by a number of recent racially

:04:38. > :04:41.And there was another gathering in response to the controversial

:04:42. > :04:43.remarks made by Pastor James McConnell, and those made by

:04:44. > :04:53.The recent focus on Islam has done damage to our

:04:54. > :04:57.But local Muslims say events like the rally have helped.

:04:58. > :05:04.That's a good signal to show people from different minorities that

:05:05. > :05:07.Northern Ireland and Belfast are open for all races, all religions

:05:08. > :05:13.and colours and everyone will come here, and that was brilliant

:05:14. > :05:17.support. But what is the picture when it comes to racism here, and

:05:18. > :05:21.what is the justice system doing to tackle it?

:05:22. > :05:23.According to the latest police statistics,

:05:24. > :05:26.there's been a sharp year-on-year increase in the number of racist

:05:27. > :05:31.In the 12 months from 2012 to 2013, 750 racist incidents were reported

:05:32. > :05:33.That number went up to 982 last year.

:05:34. > :05:36.That's a rise of over 30% in just a 12-month period.

:05:37. > :05:39.And the figures also show that the police only solve one

:05:40. > :05:45.Neil Jarman has carried out extensive research into hate crime.

:05:46. > :05:49.He says the fact we lag behind the rest of the UK sends out

:05:50. > :06:01.He feels there is less emphasis on pursuing the perpetrators. It sends

:06:02. > :06:06.a message that these incidents are not being taken that seriously, so

:06:07. > :06:11.even when people say they are tackling racism, if they see cases

:06:12. > :06:15.are not being successfully rusticated, it tends to undermine

:06:16. > :06:21.that message and victims say, why should we report if they do not do

:06:22. > :06:25.anything about it? Others say hot additions are guilty of ambivalence

:06:26. > :06:29.towards racism, which is not the place that like the case in other

:06:30. > :06:34.parts of the UK. The legislation needs to be fit for purpose so we

:06:35. > :06:39.can name hate crime for what it is and deal with it. No one from the

:06:40. > :06:44.prosecution service was available for interview but a spokesman said

:06:45. > :06:47.it is not appropriate for the PPS to comment on legislation as this rests

:06:48. > :06:49.with the Department of Justice. A woman in her late 70s has died

:06:50. > :06:53.after a house fire in Larne. The blaze started

:06:54. > :06:56.in an upstairs bedroom of her home Firefighters rescued the woman

:06:57. > :06:59.from the building, It's thought

:07:00. > :07:05.the fire was started accidentally. An 18-year-old man has appeared

:07:06. > :07:08.in court charged with attempting to murder a teenager

:07:09. > :07:13.in Lisburn two years ago. Scott Vineer, who has autism,

:07:14. > :07:16.was 17 years old when he was found unconscious on the Lagan towpath.

:07:17. > :07:19.His head had been beaten. He remained in a coma

:07:20. > :07:21.for three months. Today, he was in court alongside

:07:22. > :07:24.his parents to see Ryan Craig from Ashmount Gardens in Lisburn charged

:07:25. > :07:28.with attempting to murder him. The accused was remanded in custody

:07:29. > :07:35.until the end of the month. Health care regulators have found

:07:36. > :07:38.a County Antrim nursing home owner failed to report allegations

:07:39. > :07:40.of potential abuse The RQIA found Dr Dean Harron, who

:07:41. > :07:48.owns Cherry Tree in Carrickfergus, guilty of not complying with

:07:49. > :07:51.safeguarding legislation. The home was the subject

:07:52. > :07:54.of a special investigation Our health correspondent

:07:55. > :07:58.Marie-Louise Connolly has the story. What is the nature

:07:59. > :08:08.of the allegations? They involve one care assistant who

:08:09. > :08:13.allegedly verbally abused to residents. The residence are

:08:14. > :08:17.described as being vulnerable and elderly. One was being served their

:08:18. > :08:23.evening meal and the other, we are told, was spoken to in a shower

:08:24. > :08:28.manner. These incidents only emerged after the regulator inspected

:08:29. > :08:34.allegations of abuse between workers. We are told it emerged

:08:35. > :08:38.these other incidents had taken place between residents. We

:08:39. > :08:43.understand the home's manager did carry out her own inspection but she

:08:44. > :08:45.didn't report it through official channels, which isn't in line with

:08:46. > :08:48.legislation. You investigated this nursing home

:08:49. > :08:51.last year after being contacted Is this evidence that

:08:52. > :09:00.things haven't improved? Some might argue these incidents

:09:01. > :09:05.highlight that there is still an ongoing problem. Others might say

:09:06. > :09:10.the regulators are on top of the job, keeping an eye on things, but

:09:11. > :09:15.as we recall, the whistle-blower came to the BBC with her story about

:09:16. > :09:21.the home and said her concerns had fallen on deaf ears about toilet,

:09:22. > :09:28.cleanliness, staff not being properly trained. However, since she

:09:29. > :09:31.came forward, there has been an independent investigation into the

:09:32. > :09:40.home and we expect that to be published next month. Doctor Dean

:09:41. > :09:46.Haran has been named as feeling in his statutory duty and a home has

:09:47. > :09:48.been put on alert, which means it has until July to address those

:09:49. > :09:58.problems. They said the staff are deeply

:09:59. > :10:04.disappointed by what has happened, what has been reported, and patients

:10:05. > :10:05.can expect the very best of staff, who take very seriously their

:10:06. > :10:08.duties. Still ahead on the programme

:10:09. > :10:10.before 7pm: 20 years on,

:10:11. > :10:13.yet the families of those killed in the Chinook disaster say they

:10:14. > :10:20.still don't know how it happened. The folk musician Francis McPeake

:10:21. > :10:24.has gone on trial in Belfast accused The 72-year-old,

:10:25. > :10:30.formerly of Eliza Street Close in Belfast, was aged around 67 at

:10:31. > :10:34.the time of the alleged offences. His alleged victim has

:10:35. > :10:38.been giving evidence. The musician sat quietly

:10:39. > :10:43.in the dock as the details of 12 charges of underage sexual

:10:44. > :10:47.relations were put to him. A prosecution lawyer told

:10:48. > :10:49.the court that when interviewed by the police, Mr McPeake denied

:10:50. > :10:53.everything, saying the allegations He made the denial

:10:54. > :10:58.in a written statement. But when asked questions

:10:59. > :11:00.about details to do with the alleged offences,

:11:01. > :11:03.the prosecution said he replied, It was alleged that he first met

:11:04. > :11:11.the schoolgirl in Belfast in 2008, and that the relationship

:11:12. > :11:13.between the two became more The alleged victim,

:11:14. > :11:21.who can't be identified, told the court she started having full

:11:22. > :11:26.sexual relations with the musician when they returned to Belfast from

:11:27. > :11:30.a music festival in the Republic. She said after

:11:31. > :11:32.the first time it happened that Mr McPeake told her he was afraid and

:11:33. > :11:37.that he had a lot to lose and that The woman,

:11:38. > :11:42.who was under the age of 16 at the time of the first offences, said

:11:43. > :11:46.she broke off the relationship. She told the court that

:11:47. > :11:50.when she did, he said she'd wrecked his life because he had fallen

:11:51. > :12:01.in love with her. Her cross-examination is due to

:12:02. > :12:05.resume tomorrow morning. The DUP has praised

:12:06. > :12:08.the outgoing Lord Mayor of Belfast, Mairtin O Muilleoir of Sinn Fein,

:12:09. > :12:10.saying he has been In the past half-hour, the council

:12:11. > :12:15.has been electing his successor. Our political correspondent

:12:16. > :12:29.Martina Purdy is at the City Hall. There has been plenty of cheering

:12:30. > :12:36.coming from the council chamber at this evening. The SDLP's Nicola

:12:37. > :12:40.Mallon has made history because she is not only the last Lord Mayor of

:12:41. > :12:45.the City Council as currently constituted, there will be a new

:12:46. > :12:50.super council next year, but she is the first nationalist woman to hold

:12:51. > :12:56.the post. She is only the third female Lord Mayor in Belfast's

:12:57. > :13:02.disarray. Mark Simpson has this report on Mairtin O Muilleoir's year

:13:03. > :13:08.in office. He never missed a photo opportunity. And with his telephone

:13:09. > :13:12.in one hand and a cup of tea in the other, the Sinn Fein Lord Mayor

:13:13. > :13:18.tried to speak to people from every corner of Belfast. It only backfired

:13:19. > :13:23.once, when he went to Woodvale Parade, near the Shankill Road. He

:13:24. > :13:27.was hurt by the experience but it didn't stop him trying to reach out

:13:28. > :13:33.across the divide. A highlight of the year for me was that the

:13:34. > :13:38.Shankill Woodvale Methodist congregation came into the parlour

:13:39. > :13:42.with their study group. I said I would come in to say hello and when

:13:43. > :13:47.I did they were praying for the Lord Mayor, and that was a special

:13:48. > :13:54.emotional moment for me. He went pink for the Giro d'Italia and

:13:55. > :13:59.brought some humour to City Hall. A far cry from 1987 when he first

:14:00. > :14:02.joined the council. When I first came in I wore a flak jacket, I

:14:03. > :14:08.wasn't allowed to speak, I was thrown after -- out of my first

:14:09. > :14:13.meeting after ten minutes. I said let's not do the past too much,

:14:14. > :14:18.because for every hurt and peace of devoted I could talk about, someone

:14:19. > :14:22.else could talk about the heartbreak and grief that existed for them

:14:23. > :14:27.during the years of darkness in this city. At one of his last engagements

:14:28. > :14:34.he received a standing ovation and joining in the applause was the DUP.

:14:35. > :14:39.On balance I think a more positive contribution than negative. He has

:14:40. > :14:44.been a good Lord Mayor, not necessarily a Sinn Fein Lord Mayor,

:14:45. > :14:47.and that may be why he has established a good reputation. The

:14:48. > :14:56.next Lord Mayor will do things slightly differently. I am not into

:14:57. > :15:01.selfie 's. That's not me. A bit more subdued but hopefully will bring the

:15:02. > :15:13.same level of energy. Even his opponents say he will be a hard act

:15:14. > :15:17.to follow. What can you tell us about the new Lady Mayoress? She is

:15:18. > :15:23.young woman in her early 30s, a newlywed, and she hails from Ardoyne

:15:24. > :15:30.although she no longer lives within the city limits. She lives North of

:15:31. > :15:36.the city and says she hopes to come back to visit it soon. She is giving

:15:37. > :15:40.up her post of special and to the environment Minister to focus on

:15:41. > :15:44.this role. She wants to focus on a shared city, an unsung heroes, and

:15:45. > :15:48.on the homeless. She is absolutely thrilled that the top posts in this

:15:49. > :15:56.city are being held by women this year, such as deputy mayor, high

:15:57. > :16:01.Sheriff and the chief Executive of the council. So plenty to celebrate

:16:02. > :16:05.in the city tonight. 20 years ago, at this time

:16:06. > :16:08.of the evening, a military helicopter travelling from

:16:09. > :16:10.RAF Aldergrove to Scotland crashed Relatives of some of those who died

:16:11. > :16:17.say they still do not accept the Ministry of Defence's version of the

:16:18. > :16:21.incident and fear they may never Our investigations reporter

:16:22. > :16:29.Kevin Magee has this story. This memorial has been erected

:16:30. > :16:32.on the crash site on a remote It lists the names of the 25 senior

:16:33. > :16:38.security personnel from the Royal Ulster Constabulary, Army

:16:39. > :16:41.and MI5 who died alongside the four For one widow, Susan Phoenix,

:16:42. > :17:05.who lost her husband Ian, 20 years on that it is still there.

:17:06. > :17:12.If you have no great love, you always know it. I am not bitter, I

:17:13. > :17:22.am not angry. I know I always have that love with me.

:17:23. > :17:25.At first, the two pilots were blamed, but following a campaign,

:17:26. > :17:29.The MoD now says after exhaustive investigations by it and independent

:17:30. > :17:32.bodies, there was no evidence of technical or mechanical failure.

:17:33. > :17:52.I think we always knew it was a faulty piece of kit. We may never

:17:53. > :17:56.know. Flight data and cockpit voice recorders or not fitted to all

:17:57. > :18:01.Chinook helicopters at the time, so there was a lack of evidence.

:18:02. > :18:04.Anne Magee's husband Kevin was a detective inspector in the

:18:05. > :18:07.She says she' never been given a proper explanation

:18:08. > :18:19.It's infuriating not to know. I have lost the most important person in my

:18:20. > :18:24.life and I don't know why. Multiply that by 29 and that is where we

:18:25. > :18:27.are, but I suppose you cannot just keep going back and back and back.

:18:28. > :18:30.A number of memorial services were held, including one on the Mull

:18:31. > :18:42.We are very aware that there have been investigations since and it has

:18:43. > :18:47.been a controversial subject at times. People 20 years on one to

:18:48. > :18:52.look back on that and just end about those people who lost their lives.

:18:53. > :18:56.This hillside was covered in cloud on the night of the disaster. 20

:18:57. > :19:01.years on and a host of inquiry is and for some of the residents

:19:02. > :19:04.affected, the mist has never cleared, with questions still being

:19:05. > :19:08.asked over what precisely caused the crash, leading the RAF to describe

:19:09. > :19:12.this as their worst peacetime disaster.

:19:13. > :19:15.Racing at the Isle of Man TT motorcycle festival has been

:19:16. > :19:17.overshadowed by the death of a competitor.

:19:18. > :19:26.Stephen Watson is here with the latest details of that.

:19:27. > :19:34.Yes, sadly a rider has been killed today. Bob Price, an experienced

:19:35. > :19:38.veteran from Gloucestershire in England, died following an incident

:19:39. > :19:50.on the third lap of the race. The circuit is regarded as the most

:19:51. > :19:50.dangerous in the world. The news came after a weekend when the sport

:19:51. > :19:57.paid its tribute to the late Simon Andrews,

:19:58. > :20:00.who died after a fatal crash Thousands of bikers took part in a

:20:01. > :20:05.special parade on the Isle of Man. Roy Keane is staying

:20:06. > :20:08.as assistant boss of the Republic of Keane informed

:20:09. > :20:13.the FAI that he does NOT wish to be considered for the manager's post

:20:14. > :20:15.vacated by Neil Lennon. Last week some bookmakers suspended

:20:16. > :20:18.betting once it was revealed there had been

:20:19. > :20:20.an informal approach to Keane. The FAI confirmed that Keane will

:20:21. > :20:23.travel with Ireland Former West Brom boss Steve Clarke

:20:24. > :20:27.is the new favourite Northern Ireland manager Michael

:20:28. > :20:31.O'Neill has said that Uruguay are a good side, capable of getting into

:20:32. > :20:35.the last 16 of the World Cup - Despite some excellent goalkeeping

:20:36. > :20:40.by Roy Carroll, the South Americans, who will be one

:20:41. > :20:43.of England's group D opponents in Brazil, beat Northern Ireland

:20:44. > :20:46.1-0 in a friendly on Saturday. But O'Neill took heart from his

:20:47. > :21:00.team's defensive display and said Antrim's Gaelic footballers

:21:01. > :21:02.will play Donegal in Liam Bradley's side edged a

:21:03. > :21:17.thrilling contest against Fermanagh respects defensive systems have

:21:18. > :21:21.typically dominated Championship matches in recent years.

:21:22. > :21:23.Defensive systems have typically dominated Championship games

:21:24. > :21:25.in recent years, but this match certainly bucked that

:21:26. > :21:29.Antrim raced into an early lead - this goal

:21:30. > :21:32.from Brian Neeson put Liam Bradley's side a remakable 11 points ahead.

:21:33. > :21:34.But that seemed to kick-start a Fermanagh revival,

:21:35. > :21:37.as the home side started to make an impact on the scoreboard,

:21:38. > :21:40.with forward Sean Quigley finding the net before half time.

:21:41. > :21:43.In the second period, Antrim began to dominate once more.

:21:44. > :21:48.The hugely impressive Kevin Niblock struck their second goal of the game

:21:49. > :21:54.before adding this outstanding point from play shortly after to further

:21:55. > :22:06.Former All Star Barry Owens' strike gave them hope of a comeback,

:22:07. > :22:09.and Marty O'Brien's late score left just two points between

:22:10. > :22:17.Antrim hung on though for victory, altough it took this brilliant goal

:22:18. > :22:20.line clearance from Kevin O' Boyle in the dying seconds to seal

:22:21. > :22:40.We enjoyed the night and we will knuckle down for the next day. We

:22:41. > :22:45.certainly do not fear anybody. It was a fascinating game in many ways.

:22:46. > :22:49.Highly exciting. A lot of good scores by both teams. A lot of
