:00:11. > :00:13.Two men who were the victims of a racist attack

:00:14. > :00:16.at the weekend have now left their home in North Belfast.

:00:17. > :00:19.One of the men needed hospital treatment following an assault

:00:20. > :00:22.Kelly Bonner spoke to the men earlier today

:00:23. > :00:31.Yesterday afternoon a man approached Muhammad Asif

:00:32. > :00:35.Khattak outside his home, screaming racial abuse before assaulting him.

:00:36. > :00:38.He managed to get into the house but two men kicked the door

:00:39. > :00:47.I managed to hide myself in the toilet and I closed the door.

:00:48. > :00:52.He pushed the door and I was so scared at the time

:00:53. > :01:03.He started punching me and kicking me.

:01:04. > :01:06.He beat me everywhere with a bottle in his hand.

:01:07. > :01:11.His friend was also attacked as he tried to defend him.

:01:12. > :01:15.I still remember the face of that fellow, the rage was coming out

:01:16. > :01:25.Racially abusing us, saying dirty Arabs, get out of our

:01:26. > :01:32.This was the second attack on the men in 12 hours.

:01:33. > :01:34.Earlier yesterday morning a bottle was thrown through

:01:35. > :01:41.There was controversy over comments made about Islam by Pastor James

:01:42. > :01:47.Muhammad Asif Khattak called on Peter Robinson to help diffuse

:01:48. > :01:55.That is a fire he lit in the jungle and I am one

:01:56. > :02:07.If the First Minister came forward and he apologised in public, on air,

:02:08. > :02:11.to the Muslim community, people would be really happy.

:02:12. > :02:15.The MP for the area condemned the attack.

:02:16. > :02:17.Having called with the two gentlemen, I am appalled

:02:18. > :02:22.This should never have happened and I share the outrage many of the

:02:23. > :02:35.Indeed, there are people living in that street of other ethnic

:02:36. > :02:38.minorities and they feel outraged at being branded in this way.

:02:39. > :02:42.A 57-year-old man was remanded and has been released on bail.

:02:43. > :02:45.An 18-year-old woman has been charged with disorderly behaviour

:02:46. > :02:52.Earlier today, Pastor James McConnell arrived at the house to

:02:53. > :02:59.He said he was ashamed and angry at the attack, urging the two men

:03:00. > :03:08.The Ulster Unionist leader, Mike Nesbitt, has tonight visited

:03:09. > :03:13.He arrived carrying a copy of the Koran.

:03:14. > :03:15.Mr Nesbitt spent over an hour speaking to members

:03:16. > :03:18.of the Islamic community about a range of issues including

:03:19. > :03:23.And he urged the First minister Peter Robinson to

:03:24. > :03:31.make a public apology for recent comments about Muslims.

:03:32. > :03:37.I think that the First Minister has to speak representing all of the

:03:38. > :03:41.people of Northern Ireland and I would accept that as a challenge and

:03:42. > :03:46.I think you got it wrong on this occasion. I think, like all human

:03:47. > :03:50.beings, we get things wrong and we say things we do not really mean or

:03:51. > :03:54.express similar ways we perhaps could have thought through better. I

:03:55. > :04:00.think it would be useful if the First Minister was to make a public

:04:01. > :04:04.apology. Definitely, a public apology would be helpful and we

:04:05. > :04:07.already have accepted his apology in private and when he comes to the

:04:08. > :04:12.centre to meet more Muslims, he could make up his mind.

:04:13. > :04:16.A woman in her late 70s has died after a house fire in Larne.

:04:17. > :04:19.The blaze started in an upstairs bedroom of her home

:04:20. > :04:23.Firefighters rescued the woman from the building but she died

:04:24. > :04:26.It's thought the fire was started accidentally.

:04:27. > :04:29.The SDLP's Nichola Mallon has become the new Lord Mayor of Belfast,

:04:30. > :04:30.succeeding Sinn Fein's Mairtin O' Muilleoir.

:04:31. > :04:33.Ms Mallon, who represents the Oldpark area of the city,

:04:34. > :04:37.was appointed at a full council meeting earlier this evening.

:04:38. > :04:40.Maire Hendron of the Alliance Party will serve as her deputy,

:04:41. > :04:42.making it the first time in history that women have held

:04:43. > :04:56.I want to write how fast a city for everyone, I want to bring the Lord

:04:57. > :05:00.Mayor roll out of City Hall and into the lives of people, I want to

:05:01. > :05:03.connect with people in the city who are often invisible and I want to

:05:04. > :05:08.support women and showcase the best of Belfast. For me, that is the

:05:09. > :05:11.people and we have so many unsung heroes in businesses and

:05:12. > :05:14.communities, volunteers and carers and want to spend this year

:05:15. > :05:20.Celbridge in all other great efforts. It is a privilege.

:05:21. > :05:24.Considering that I am coming to the end of my political career. It is a

:05:25. > :05:27.great honour that the party has given me this.

:05:28. > :05:30.And the new Mayor of Derry City Council is the

:05:31. > :05:33.Gary Middleton of the DUP was elected Deputy Mayor

:05:34. > :05:37.In Newtownabbey, Dineen Walker of the DUP, who

:05:38. > :05:41.branded Anna Lo a racist on social media, has not attended a meeting

:05:42. > :05:44.of the council, where she had been expected to be elected Mayor.

:05:45. > :05:54.The council accepts the congratulations of friends and

:05:55. > :05:58.colleagues at his election to the office. But until last week, this

:05:59. > :06:04.was not the plan for the 25-year-old politician. In fact, another DUP

:06:05. > :06:08.councillor was meant to have the chain around her neck. His party

:06:09. > :06:14.colleague, Dineen Walker, was hotly tipped to take the position. That is

:06:15. > :06:17.until her comments on social media last week branding Anna Lo of the

:06:18. > :06:22.Alliance Party a racist. But only was she not elected, she did not

:06:23. > :06:28.attend the ceiling's meeting. This post on the Facebook page was what

:06:29. > :06:32.scuppered her role. She later apologised and deleted it but with

:06:33. > :06:37.the party mired in a race riot, word came down that she was not to be

:06:38. > :06:43.proposed. When we fill these positions, we have discussions with

:06:44. > :06:47.the group and senior members and with local constituents and the

:06:48. > :06:50.prevailing view was that the counsellor should be nominated to

:06:51. > :06:53.the position and I am dilated he got that. Was at the view that

:06:54. > :07:03.Councillor Walker should not be proposed? There are always arguments

:07:04. > :07:09.put forward for some figures and the overwhelming majority supported

:07:10. > :07:14.Councillor Hogg. Alliance noted -- threatened to vote against. We did

:07:15. > :07:18.not have to discuss that because of the action and she was proposed,

:07:19. > :07:21.that would have been discussed within the gripping and we would

:07:22. > :07:29.have come to a decision as to what we would do. Given what I saw

:07:30. > :07:31.happening, I would have had great difficulty supporting her.

:07:32. > :07:37.Councillor Hogg will have a shorter than usual rule in the top job. The

:07:38. > :07:39.council will be supplanted by a new super council in ten months.

:07:40. > :07:46.A rider has been killed during today's Supersport Race

:07:47. > :07:50.Bob Price, who was 65 and from Gloucestershire, died following

:07:51. > :07:56.The news comes after a weekend when the sport paid tribute to the late

:07:57. > :07:59.Simon Andrews, who died after a crash at this year's North West 200.

:08:00. > :08:03.Thousands of bikers took part in a special parade on the Isle of Man.

:08:04. > :08:05.Looking ahead to a story we'll be covering tomorrow

:08:06. > :08:10.We find out if the traffic scheme with new bus lanes introduced

:08:11. > :08:13.in Belfast 18 months ago has worked to reduce the number of vehicles

:08:14. > :08:17.That's here on BBC Newsline on the radio programme

:08:18. > :08:30.Here's Barra Best with the weather forecast.

:08:31. > :08:35.We have a few showers around at the moment and most will die away and

:08:36. > :08:40.for most it will be a dry night with temperatures falling no lower than

:08:41. > :08:44.11 degrees for many. Lots of cloud around and quite a bit. Around

:08:45. > :08:48.tomorrow morning so it is and will start but it will brighten up

:08:49. > :08:51.through the day with some spells of sunshine and also some scattered

:08:52. > :08:56.showers. If you showers mainly in the West first thing, East has a dry

:08:57. > :09:01.start but even here, showers will move injuring the day. The bulk of

:09:02. > :09:03.the wet weather will be in northern areas of Britain, through the

:09:04. > :09:09.north-east of England and to Scotland with heavy downpours. The

:09:10. > :09:14.best sunshine will be across Ireland, good spells of sunshine and

:09:15. > :09:19.even here, the odd shower. Further east, some spells sunshine and

:09:20. > :09:22.scattered showers for parts of Wales, cloudier towards the

:09:23. > :09:26.south-east of England but even here, temperatures managing 20

:09:27. > :09:30.degrees. For Northern Ireland tomorrow, keep the umbrella because

:09:31. > :09:36.some showers will be getting anywhere. In the sunshine, not too

:09:37. > :09:42.bad, the wind is quite light and temperatures of 16 or maybe 17.

:09:43. > :09:45.Towards the middle of the week, we are expecting more scattered showers

:09:46. > :09:49.to come and go on Wednesday with temperatures down to below average

:09:50. > :09:53.and managing just 13 degrees towards the North Coast. The best day of the

:09:54. > :09:56.week is shaping up to be Thursday with plenty of dry, bright weather

:09:57. > :10:07.We have a few showers around at the moment and most will die away and

:10:08. > :10:19.You can't do this. You can't... Step aside.
