:00:00. > :00:00.There is still five days to go. That is all from us. Don't forget a first

:00:00. > :00:09.still five days to go. A first look at the morning papers on

:00:10. > :00:10.Good evening, and welcome to BBC Newsline.

:00:11. > :00:13.Tributes have been paid to Oswald Bradley, also known as Ossie,

:00:14. > :00:16.who got into difficulties when he was attempting to swim across

:00:17. > :00:23.He was trying to erect a union flag alongside two tricolours which

:00:24. > :00:26.had been put up on a small island. And it cost him his life.

:00:27. > :00:31.Our reporter Helen Jones spent today in the County Armagh village.

:00:32. > :00:34.A family grieving behind closed doors.

:00:35. > :00:38.A father of two and grandfather of four lived here.

:00:39. > :00:41.Described as larger-than-life, Oswald Bradley was

:00:42. > :00:44.a well-known character who loved bowling and country

:00:45. > :00:48.and western music, and this is where he died, a local beauty spot

:00:49. > :00:54.In a mixed village where relationships are said to be good,

:00:55. > :00:59.two tricolours appeared last week on an island in the lake.

:01:00. > :01:03.I've spoken to a few people who say they were here when Oswald Bradley

:01:04. > :01:09.He talked to the friend of a 17-year-old who tried to save him.

:01:10. > :01:11.He said he was going to put a union flag up

:01:12. > :01:16.alongside the two tricolours. He said Bessbrook is 50/50.

:01:17. > :01:20.He got into the water and that was when he shouted

:01:21. > :01:26.This is where he collected his newspaper every day,

:01:27. > :01:34.There wasn't a sectarian bone in Ossie Bradley's body, but he felt

:01:35. > :01:39.strongly that the values of shared space had been breached by the

:01:40. > :01:46.planting of Irish tricolour flags and he felt strongly that no-ne else

:01:47. > :01:52.was doing anything about it and he needed to, with tragic consequences.

:01:53. > :01:54.Last week Sinn Fein called for the people who put

:01:55. > :02:08.It took a guess for that to happen. -- it took a death.

:02:09. > :02:10.They were removed by the police with agreement

:02:11. > :02:15.A man gave his life and I think we should respect the fact he died

:02:16. > :02:18.doing something he wanted to do, but it is an opportunity that his memory

:02:19. > :02:21.should not be of someone trying to remove flags but that would

:02:22. > :02:25.Touched by tragedy, a memorial to the victims of Kingsmills.

:02:26. > :02:31.Oswald Bradley's cousin was one of ten workmen killed in 1966.

:02:32. > :02:36.One survivor was his lifelong friend.

:02:37. > :02:40.In a small village like this, everyone pulls together.

:02:41. > :02:43.We unite when something goes wrong, but Ossie, if there was a death in

:02:44. > :02:47.any house, Ossie with be among the first to be there with a tray of

:02:48. > :02:52.sandwiches and cake asking if they needed anything, that is the kind of

:02:53. > :03:00.A simple act, and lost in thought, a wreath is laid.

:03:01. > :03:07.Friends, family and a close-knit community in mourning.

:03:08. > :03:10.A mother whose home was damaged in a hate crime attack in

:03:11. > :03:14.East Belfast last night says she no longer feels safe there.

:03:15. > :03:18.Paint was thrown, windows smashed and cars damaged in eight incidents

:03:19. > :03:28.in the area late last night. Ciara Riddell reports.

:03:29. > :03:31.There have been racist attacks in this area before, but nothing on

:03:32. > :03:33.this scale. There is barely a gable wall free

:03:34. > :03:36.from racist graffiti in the streets off Bloomfield Avenue.

:03:37. > :03:40.Homes and cars were also attacked. This woman

:03:41. > :03:43.and her children were victims. They moved here

:03:44. > :04:01.from Slovakia two years ago. I'm sitting in this room, my

:04:02. > :04:12.children also, boom, I don't know what is it. It surprises us.

:04:13. > :04:19.It shook me up last night because I am a nervy person anyway

:04:20. > :04:22.and it scared me, so what would it be like for the families?

:04:23. > :04:28.They have to think about the children, they're in the house too.

:04:29. > :04:33.The police are investigating eight incidents of hate crime

:04:34. > :04:36.and say they are doing everything they can to find those responsible.

:04:37. > :04:37.Politicians are also calling for calm.

:04:38. > :04:40.There was a level of orchestration to these attacks.

:04:41. > :04:43.However, at this stage it is impossible to say whether any

:04:44. > :04:49.We would appeal to members of the community, especially in that area,

:04:50. > :04:57.or anyone who has any information about these attacks, to come forward

:04:58. > :05:07.And provide that information to detectives. It cannot go on. People

:05:08. > :05:11.need to come together and show these people that they are welcome in the

:05:12. > :05:21.area and if they have any information, bring it to police to

:05:22. > :05:26.bring these people to justice. Council workers arrived early to

:05:27. > :05:27.cover the graffiti, but the damage to community relations here will

:05:28. > :05:31.take longer to erase. The home of the DUP mayor

:05:32. > :05:33.of Coleraine has been attacked. Graffiti was daubed on the wall

:05:34. > :05:36.of George Duddy's house The councillor says two of his

:05:37. > :05:39.neighbours were also singled out. A corrosive liquid was poured over

:05:40. > :05:42.a car parked in Granary Drive, while a union flag was removed

:05:43. > :05:45.from the front of a house in Quilly Road and graffiti was

:05:46. > :05:55.spray-painted on the front porch. The police have recovered what they

:05:56. > :05:59.believe are confident parts for a bomb in Strabane. The items were

:06:00. > :06:01.found in a search of a derelict outhouse.

:06:02. > :06:04.Time now to head over to Glasgow for the latest on Northern Ireland

:06:05. > :06:07.athletes in the Commonwealth Games from Stephen Watson.

:06:08. > :06:14.Northern Ireland now has five Commonwealth Games medals.

:06:15. > :06:16.Following a silver in bowls and a bronze in judo, tonight

:06:17. > :06:20.Joe Fitzpatrick, Sean Duffy and Sean McGlinchey all

:06:21. > :06:23.won their quarterfinal bouts to guarantee at least bronze.

:06:24. > :06:27.They will now have a chance to go on and fight for gold.

:06:28. > :06:30.And Team NI have six more fighters just one win away

:06:31. > :06:48.Boxing is our most successful sports at the Commonwealth Games. And in

:06:49. > :06:56.Glasgow, are fighters are excelling again. Joe Fitzpatrick was first in

:06:57. > :07:02.action this evening. Good left hand out of that. The teenager from the

:07:03. > :07:15.Anne to the Anne two that I club suffered a cut on his cheque. --

:07:16. > :07:19.immaculate. Through to the semifinal, in the red corner,

:07:20. > :07:25.representing Northern Ireland, Joe Fitzpatrick. A unanimous decision

:07:26. > :07:32.for the Belfast lightweight. Dame Mary Peters loudly waving the flag.

:07:33. > :07:37.It was some experience, with the crowd it feels even better. I can't

:07:38. > :07:43.wait until Friday to get a better medal. Onwards and upwards from

:07:44. > :07:50.here, when I was a kid I thought I would be up there, I want to be a

:07:51. > :07:57.gold medallist, not bronze. Next up was Sean Duffy from Armagh. He was

:07:58. > :08:03.also impressive in the light welterweight division. It was

:08:04. > :08:11.another unanimous decision against a Malaysian opponent. Representing

:08:12. > :08:17.Northern Ireland, Sean Duffy. But he is not finished yet. Too tough fight

:08:18. > :08:21.to get here. We are looking beyond the bronze, from the first day we

:08:22. > :08:30.started trading, with all the coaches, bronze was not an option.

:08:31. > :08:37.He is tough, is this canyon. In the light heavyweight class, Sean

:08:38. > :08:42.McGlinchey from Derry made it three out of three. After a bruising

:08:43. > :08:51.encounter, he was awarded every round. Whatever's happened happened

:08:52. > :08:57.and I have shown people all around the place that I am back and I am

:08:58. > :09:00.here to take medals. And on the medal hunt tomorrow,

:09:01. > :09:07.Michael Conlan, Paddy Barnes, Connor Coyle and Steven Donnelly

:09:08. > :09:09.Michaela Walsh and Alanna Audley Murphy.

:09:10. > :09:13.NI shooter David Calvert just missed out on

:09:14. > :09:16.He finished fourth in the full bore rifle.

:09:17. > :09:18.In gymnastics, Nicole Mawhinney impressed the judges today.

:09:19. > :09:22.The Down teenager qualified for the women's all-round individual final.

:09:23. > :09:29.Peter Glass from Newtownards is making his Games debut.

:09:30. > :09:31.Tonight he threw a season's best in the penultimate discipline,

:09:32. > :09:34.the javelin, and will have gained a lot of valuable experience

:09:35. > :09:37.The same goes for 20-year-old Dempsey McGuigan,

:09:38. > :09:43.He contested the final of the hammer tonight, and enjoyed

:09:44. > :09:52.Away from the games, the Northern Ireland Milk Cup youth

:09:53. > :09:54.football tournament saw two of England and Scotland's biggest

:09:55. > :10:00.Liverpool played Rangers at the Showgrounds

:10:01. > :10:03.in the junior section, a game which attracted a big crowd to Ballymena.

:10:04. > :10:06.And it was Rangers who came out on top, thanks to two first-half

:10:07. > :10:09.goals, both scored by the same player, Sam Jamieson

:10:10. > :10:21.A result which will go down well here in Glasgow.

:10:22. > :10:24.I'll be back with lots more tomorrow.

:10:25. > :10:30.Now, with the weather forecast, here's Cecilia Daly.

:10:31. > :10:37.It looks as though most of us will have a fairly dry night but it looks

:10:38. > :10:40.unsettled over the next few days. Most days will bring showers and

:10:41. > :10:46.some could be heavy, especially on Thursday. There will be showers

:10:47. > :10:51.tonight up towards the north coast and the west, otherwise dry and

:10:52. > :10:55.temperatures dropping to 12 and 13 degrees in parts of the south-east.

:10:56. > :11:01.Tomorrow there will be showery rain moving south during the morning,

:11:02. > :11:06.initially in the north and west, some bits could be quite prolonged,

:11:07. > :11:11.editing site towards Belfast and parts of Fermanagh by mid-morning

:11:12. > :11:15.and then continuing south-east. It is a weak weather front which

:11:16. > :11:19.stretches into southern counties of Scotland and will edge into parts of

:11:20. > :11:24.northern England during the day. To the south of it, dry weather with

:11:25. > :11:29.sunshine over central areas of England and Wales, and Southern

:11:30. > :11:33.Ireland seeing pleasant sunshine. It should brighten up over north-east

:11:34. > :11:37.Scotland but in western areas there will be cloud and showers at times.

:11:38. > :11:42.We can expect further showers tomorrow afternoon but there will be

:11:43. > :11:47.more dry than wet weather and sunny glimpses from time to time. Breezy

:11:48. > :11:51.for a while but it will ease as the day goes on and temperatures will be

:11:52. > :11:56.similar to today. Thursday morning has very heavy rain, possibly

:11:57. > :12:00.thunderstorms, but it will become drier later in the day and sunshine

:12:01. > :12:10.and showers continued towards the weekend. That's it for now. Our next

:12:11. > :12:11.bulletin is at 6:25 a.m.. You can follow this programme on
