:01:17. > :01:19.We'll not be breaking any temperature records over

:01:20. > :01:35.A completely reckless act - that's how the police are describing

:01:36. > :01:38.a gun attack on one of their patrols in Londonderry.

:01:39. > :01:40.Two shots were fired at the driver's side

:01:41. > :01:44.The attack happened in the Bogside in the early hours

:01:45. > :01:46.of yesterday morning, but details have only just emerged.

:01:47. > :01:47.Dissident republicans are being blamed.

:01:48. > :01:51.Here's our North-West reporter, Keiron Tourish.

:01:52. > :01:54.The police say the three officers targeted were in a four-by-four

:01:55. > :01:59.vehicle and on a routine patrol when two shots were fired at them.

:02:00. > :02:03.The shots hit the driver's window as they were passing this junction

:02:04. > :02:09.The officers suspected something had struck the silver-coloured vehicle,

:02:10. > :02:11.similiar to this one which was filmed

:02:12. > :02:20.during a recent security alert, and immediately returned to base.

:02:21. > :02:29.To fire shots in any built-up area is a mindless and reckless act,

:02:30. > :02:34.regardless of anyone using a gun in a built up area is in the lap of the

:02:35. > :02:39.gods and if they missed, we could have had a passing vehicle or a

:02:40. > :02:41.pedestrian or a house head, and I would condemn them mindless actions

:02:42. > :02:45.of those behind this attack. Politicians were scathing

:02:46. > :02:47.in their condemnation. The people who carried out this

:02:48. > :02:50.attack have no regard for their community, or for

:02:51. > :03:00.the future we are trying to build. They have no place in today's

:03:01. > :03:05.society. The people of Londonderry are tied on this incident and

:03:06. > :03:09.putting anyone's life at risk, and especially those who are out to

:03:10. > :03:14.protect communities to be attacked is disgusting. The police suspect is

:03:15. > :03:18.that Republicans are behind this at attack but say they will not be

:03:19. > :03:19.deflected from providing the type of service they say the committee

:03:20. > :03:27.deserves. A 32-year-old woman's been charged

:03:28. > :03:28.with terrorism offences for allegedly trying to identify

:03:29. > :03:30.people currently under the The offences are said to have taken

:03:31. > :03:35.place while the woman worked for the The woman is accused

:03:36. > :03:42.of collecting information likely to be useful to terrorists,

:03:43. > :03:44.and misconduct in public office. She was arrested in Belfast

:03:45. > :03:46.on Monday and is to appear Community workers got together

:03:47. > :03:53.in East Belfast today to assess the impact of Monday night's spate

:03:54. > :03:56.of racist attacks in the area. The police are investigating eight

:03:57. > :04:01.incidents of hate crime, where homes and cars were damaged and racist

:04:02. > :04:05.graffiti painted on walls in the streets off Bloomfield Avenue.

:04:06. > :04:10.Ciara Riddell reports. The patch-up job on

:04:11. > :04:13.the Slovakian family car As those affected were recovering

:04:14. > :04:18.today, community workers here were doing

:04:19. > :04:31.their best to offer reassurance. The families were obviously

:04:32. > :04:36.frightened after what happened. They do not all want to move on, they had

:04:37. > :04:38.been living here for a while and are happy here so we would support them

:04:39. > :04:39.to stay on. In the nearby Skainos centre,

:04:40. > :04:42.a racism conference and a chance to The talk of who was responsible, but

:04:43. > :04:57.also how to move forward positively. Let's make sure everyone knows that

:04:58. > :05:00.within the systems we have in Northern Ireland, the Housing

:05:01. > :05:06.Executive, health and education, they are fair and are not being

:05:07. > :05:13.usurped by ethnic minorities or anyone, everyone is playing by the

:05:14. > :05:17.same rules. The police said today this was clearly orchestrated. Were

:05:18. > :05:23.paramilitaries from the loyalist community involved? Absolutely not,

:05:24. > :05:24.I have been speaking to young people in the last four weeks and

:05:25. > :05:27.categorically not. The police say they're doing

:05:28. > :05:30.everything they can to catch whoever is responsible, but this problem

:05:31. > :05:32.isn't confined to East Belfast. Racist incidents right across

:05:33. > :05:34.Northern Ireland are on the rise. If we look at the figures from 2013,

:05:35. > :05:38.they show that from April to July But when we compare that with

:05:39. > :05:45.the same period this year, there've been 337 cases according to

:05:46. > :05:50.the police figures. That means year

:05:51. > :06:10.on year there's been an increase If you weren't living in East

:06:11. > :06:16.Belfast as a young male, you can look out and know this was once a

:06:17. > :06:20.mighty community. For some people do simple explanation is that it is to

:06:21. > :06:22.do with immigration, it is a wrong answer but it is the one that

:06:23. > :06:24.motivates people. Whatever the reason,

:06:25. > :06:26.those who work closely with immigrants say attacks like these

:06:27. > :06:35.are frightening and unsettling. For many of us, this is our home and

:06:36. > :06:39.we want to live and work here and raise our families, so there is no

:06:40. > :06:47.option of going somewhere else. We need politicians to stand behind --

:06:48. > :06:50.beside the victims. There was talk in the community of ways to deal

:06:51. > :06:55.with hate crime, but as talk went on publicly, behind closed doors the

:06:56. > :06:58.families were still coming to terms with their trauma.

:06:59. > :07:00.Meanwhile, an overnight attack on a Catholic church in Dungannon

:07:01. > :07:05.Graffiti was daubed on the door and the sandstone wall at the front

:07:06. > :07:09.of the Church of St Patrick on Killyman Road in the town.

:07:10. > :07:11.The BBC has learned there's been a further delay into the review

:07:12. > :07:13.of children's heart services in Belfast.

:07:14. > :07:19.The report was expected at the start of this month, but health officials

:07:20. > :07:23.A County Down mother, whose daughter is having to travel

:07:24. > :07:26.to Birmingham for heart surgery, says she's angry and frustrated that

:07:27. > :07:35.Our health Correspondent Marie-Louise Connolly reports.

:07:36. > :07:42.Only this morning, Joanne Black received word that her daughter's

:07:43. > :07:47.heart surgery will take based in Birmingham next week. They were due

:07:48. > :07:52.to fly it a few days ago but the operation was cancelled at the last

:07:53. > :07:57.minute. The day we were to travel, we find out at 9am there was no bed

:07:58. > :08:02.available and surgery would be cancelled for the next day. We then

:08:03. > :08:09.were given a new date, which is next Wednesday. Meyer, who is now six,

:08:10. > :08:14.was born with a congenital heart defect. So far all surgery has taken

:08:15. > :08:18.place in Belfast. Her family hoped this would continue that with the

:08:19. > :08:23.outcome of children's heart services still unresolved they are left with

:08:24. > :08:28.no option but to travel to England. It is frustrating, upsetting and

:08:29. > :08:35.leaves you wondering what can I do? We have seen her slowly go downhill.

:08:36. > :08:39.She is very blue, she gets breathless, she feels the cold more

:08:40. > :08:45.than other children, their quality of life would be poor compared to

:08:46. > :08:51.children of her own age. So what is happening? In January the Health

:08:52. > :08:56.Minister appointed an international team of experts led by a Boston

:08:57. > :09:00.specialist to explore how Northern Ireland can deliver a dual network

:09:01. > :09:06.cardiac service between Dublin and Belfast. In May Edwin Poots and

:09:07. > :09:11.thence a reprieve for the local children service. It emerged an

:09:12. > :09:15.interim plan would be in place for surgeons from our Lady 's Hospital

:09:16. > :09:19.in Dublin to travel to Belfast to prevent children having to go to

:09:20. > :09:24.England. Despite those good intentions, in the past year seven

:09:25. > :09:27.children from Northern Ireland have travelled to Dublin for cardiac

:09:28. > :09:35.surgery, grabbed the number of children travelling to England was

:09:36. > :09:39.96. We have been supporting in the region of ten families a week to

:09:40. > :09:42.have to travel for England for a surgery, financially and

:09:43. > :09:48.emotionally, and it has been very busy for the charity. The minister

:09:49. > :09:51.says he understands parents want a prompt decision but the outcome of

:09:52. > :09:58.the review is now expected in the near future. And we will keep across

:09:59. > :10:00.that story for you. The new

:10:01. > :10:02.Irish Foreign Affairs Minister Charlie Flanagan says he wants to

:10:03. > :10:05.see a resumption of all-party talks Mr Flanagan met the Secretary

:10:06. > :10:09.of State for the first time He said that while trouble had been

:10:10. > :10:13.avoided on the Twelfth of July, the issues around parading still

:10:14. > :10:26.need to be resolved. I am concerned that the level of

:10:27. > :10:33.tension in July was such, albeit a relieved, that the major parades

:10:34. > :10:37.passed off without major incident and I would like to acknowledge the

:10:38. > :10:44.contribution of political leaders across-the-board in that regard but

:10:45. > :10:50.I believe it is imperative that the all-party talks at leader level be

:10:51. > :10:53.reconvened at the earliest opportunity.

:10:54. > :10:56.Now, in rush hour it's hard to move through Belfast city centre

:10:57. > :10:59.at anything more than a crawl, but now there's a proposal to slash

:11:00. > :11:02.The Department responsible for roads has published plans

:11:03. > :11:05.for a reduction in the limit around the city centre from 30mph to 20.

:11:06. > :11:23.Watching the cars fly by. Look at this car here. That car there would

:11:24. > :11:29.be doing just over 30 mph. That one is quite speedy. He is getting speed

:11:30. > :11:34.up so we are trying to create a calmer city centre. The benefits are

:11:35. > :11:37.to create a more pleasant place to shop and live and socialise, with

:11:38. > :11:45.very little disadvantage to motorists. I am just standing

:11:46. > :11:52.watching the traffic go by. It has stopped, no one is doing any speed,

:11:53. > :11:56.and they are planning to set a 20 mph speed limit through Belfast city

:11:57. > :12:01.centre. Do you think you could handle that? Through the city

:12:02. > :12:06.centre, it is a built-up area and I would not say no to it. You don't

:12:07. > :12:10.get a chance to go fast around the city centre, there are so many

:12:11. > :12:12.traffic lights, coming up me straight to

:12:13. > :12:20.traffic lights, coming up me Street, you have nine sets of

:12:21. > :12:23.traffic lights. -- Howard Street. The committee voted against bus lane

:12:24. > :12:29.enforcement but could this be limit be in Fort? At the minute there is

:12:30. > :12:35.nothing going on with police, it is hard to police anything in Belfast.

:12:36. > :12:39.You are ladies who like to lunch. Now and again. Would you like to see

:12:40. > :12:48.the speed limit brought down to 20? Perhaps in certain areas near

:12:49. > :12:54.schools. Not in general. What about the city centre? I don't think so.

:12:55. > :13:01.There are plenty of pedestrian crossings. They have had their say.

:13:02. > :13:03.It is now up to you. You have 22 days to decide if you want that 20

:13:04. > :13:07.mph speed limit. It's been discovered that Milltown

:13:08. > :13:09.Cemetery in Belfast contains the graves of a highly unusual

:13:10. > :13:13.father and son - one was a British Patrick and Joe McKelvey both died

:13:14. > :13:21.shortly after the First World War. But they are not buried together.

:13:22. > :13:37.They're 30 graves apart. It's a story which goes against the

:13:38. > :13:41.grain of Irish history. Patrick McKelvey was a

:13:42. > :13:44.grain of Irish history. Patrick British Army. He was buried in

:13:45. > :13:48.Milltown cemetery just after the First World War, a short distance

:13:49. > :13:55.from the republican plot, where his son was buried at just five years

:13:56. > :13:58.later. Job McKelvey was in the IRA. The family connection was discovered

:13:59. > :14:05.by the former Sinn Fein Lord Mayor, Tom Hartley, during research for a

:14:06. > :14:11.book on the cemetery. For me it is a lesson I keep finding again and

:14:12. > :14:16.again, that is the complex nature of our island story. There is no one

:14:17. > :14:23.who says this is the story of Ireland. It tells me that we have a

:14:24. > :14:27.complex and layered history, so we must be the only cemetery in

:14:28. > :14:33.All-Ireland where a father is buried in a British war grave and the sun

:14:34. > :14:37.is buried in the republican plot. Exactly what Patrick McKelvey did in

:14:38. > :14:44.the army is not clear, but it is known his son was very active in the

:14:45. > :14:50.IRA. In 1922, Joe was a republican leader who entered the forecourts,

:14:51. > :14:56.in Dublin at the beginning of the iris Civil War. He was captured

:14:57. > :14:59.there and imprisoned in Mountjoy. He was later executed and although he

:15:00. > :15:05.was not buried beside his father, that is not the whole story. Joe was

:15:06. > :15:13.an only child and I think he was close to his family and you can see

:15:14. > :15:20.that when you see he was at his father's bedside when he died.

:15:21. > :15:26.Milltown cemetery opened almost 150 years ago, in 1869. Since then more

:15:27. > :15:32.than 150,000 people have been buried here, including many father and son

:15:33. > :15:38.pairings, but none quite like Patrick and Joe McElderry from West

:15:39. > :15:42.Belfast. -- Joe McElderry. -- McKelvey.

:15:43. > :15:44.Now to a galaxy far, far away - or Skellig Michael island,

:15:45. > :15:48.Scenes for the new Stars Wars movie are

:15:49. > :15:51.There's excitement from tourists there, but also fears

:15:52. > :15:54.Our reporter Andy West is in the nearby fishing village

:15:55. > :15:59.of Portamagee in Kerry and has just sent this report.

:16:00. > :16:08.Straining to get a glimpse of a film set far, far away, but an Irish Navy

:16:09. > :16:16.ship patrolling Skellig Michael is making sure no one can get closer.

:16:17. > :16:21.In 1977I was six years old, so I had the pyjamas and a lunchbox and

:16:22. > :16:29.everything Star Wars so it is a big thing. It is misty today, although

:16:30. > :16:36.it looks good, but I see something like a warship there. I cannot see

:16:37. > :16:43.anything. It is the one on the right. Down at the harbour in

:16:44. > :16:47.Portamagee on the mainland, the crew have been shifting mysterious boxes

:16:48. > :16:53.and gadgets onto boats to be taken to the set. Security is tight. I'm

:16:54. > :17:01.from the BBC, we want a sneaky peak at the film. Can I get on one of the

:17:02. > :17:06.boats? No, no chance. Word in Portamagee is that Mark Hamill, the

:17:07. > :17:14.original Luke skywalker, was smuggled on yesterday. Everything

:17:15. > :17:20.was kept tight-lipped but the cat is out of the bag, and it is good for

:17:21. > :17:28.South Kerry. No one knew about it until it came around, so we are in

:17:29. > :17:31.joint more tourism around. Not everyone is excited about Star Wars

:17:32. > :17:37.touching down on Skellig Michael. Conservationists say the filming

:17:38. > :17:41.poses a risk to the island's Potton population, who are in the middle of

:17:42. > :17:46.the mating season, but the Irish Film Board say they timed the

:17:47. > :17:51.filming of the Saints specifically not to disrupt any puff and remarks.

:17:52. > :17:54.According to a local trader, this scene they are shooting is one

:17:55. > :17:59.minute long. We will have to wait far longer to find out what is

:18:00. > :18:04.really going on over there. The film is not out until next year. Last

:18:05. > :18:09.night the timing of the scene. Northern Ireland's boxers are

:18:10. > :18:11.on course for their best ever performance

:18:12. > :18:13.at the Commonwealth Games. We'll be getting the latest

:18:14. > :18:15.from Glasgow in a moment. But first, some

:18:16. > :18:17.of the team have already returned Lisa Kearney was the first member

:18:18. > :18:22.of Team NI to be placed, picking up a bronze in the judo,

:18:23. > :18:31.and she's with me now. First of all, let's get a look at

:18:32. > :18:37.the middle. You must be very pleased -- at the medal. To pick up the

:18:38. > :18:39.first medal 14 Northern Ireland pretty special and to get the team

:18:40. > :18:55.of two start is a good start. There have been a lot of ups and

:18:56. > :18:59.downs in my career and I had an unfortunate amount of injuries, so

:19:00. > :19:05.to overcome those and get a championship medal, and judo's first

:19:06. > :19:10.medal since Lisa Bradley 12 years ago was pretty special. When it

:19:11. > :19:16.comes to the sport, how did you get into it, what appealed about judo? I

:19:17. > :19:22.joined because my friends in school joined, when I was eight. My coach

:19:23. > :19:27.runs judo schools and clubs in schools across Northern Ireland, so

:19:28. > :19:33.I joined because my friends did and I loved it. When were you aware you

:19:34. > :19:39.had a special talent and you would go on to great things? As a junior

:19:40. > :19:44.athlete, alongside my studying I was training seriously and doing well on

:19:45. > :19:49.the junior world circuit, and around that time I knew this was what I

:19:50. > :19:53.wanted to do with my life, and when I left school ID sided then I wanted

:19:54. > :20:09.to move to Edinburgh and train full-time. -- I decided. What is the

:20:10. > :20:16.atmosphere like? Is there a good banter in team Nite? There is a good

:20:17. > :20:18.atmosphere, it is buzzing and everyone is really excited. Lisa,

:20:19. > :20:22.thank you for coming in. Now we head to Glasgow,

:20:23. > :20:31.where Northern Ireland's boxing team Cannot stop winning medals. Thank

:20:32. > :20:36.you. Our boxers have now secured

:20:37. > :20:38.at least six bronze medals. That equals Northern Ireland?s

:20:39. > :20:41.biggest haul back in 1986. They will now go on to try

:20:42. > :20:43.and win gold. Our success

:20:44. > :20:45.in the ring now takes the overall And there are three more fighters

:20:46. > :20:50.in the ring tonight with a shot at a medal,

:20:51. > :20:51.including captain Paddy Barnes. Introducing, in the red corner,

:20:52. > :21:03.for the boxing team. Introducing, in the red corner,

:21:04. > :21:12.Michael Conlan. Another day in the boxing ring and more are guaranteed

:21:13. > :21:18.medals for Northern Ireland. Michael Conlan made boxing for a

:21:19. > :21:22.Commonwealth medal look easy. The 22-year-old and weight showed a

:21:23. > :21:33.masterclass in defence to plot his way past his Ugandan opponent. That

:21:34. > :21:37.was just nice and handy and he was awkward but he was not doing

:21:38. > :21:46.anything to win, so I am happy with the win. The winner by unanimous

:21:47. > :21:51.decision... Michael Conlan's when laid down a marker for Northern

:21:52. > :21:56.Irish boxers this afternoon, but Michaela Walsh rose to the

:21:57. > :22:04.challenge. She is staying out of trouble, comes forward with a

:22:05. > :22:09.beautiful combination of shots. They created Commonwealth history for

:22:10. > :22:13.Northern Ireland. It confirmed her as a medallist and the first one

:22:14. > :22:19.there has ever been in the 20 year history of the Commonwealth Games. I

:22:20. > :22:24.believe I can go all the way, they aim for performance every time, I

:22:25. > :22:30.form to the best of my ability and I could hear my coaches. If the

:22:31. > :22:35.21-year-old progresses to the final, she could face Olympic champion

:22:36. > :22:40.Michael Adams. She is the golden girl, but I want to be the new old

:22:41. > :22:47.girl. I am in there for one colour and one colour only. And

:22:48. > :22:50.girl. I am in there for one colour one, it was finally Alanna

:22:51. > :22:56.Audley-Murphy's time to shine in the ring, and the Belfast lightweight

:23:14. > :23:19.keep up the good work a little girl and I just need to

:23:20. > :23:22.well. I have the first one over so I will settle into the competition

:23:23. > :23:30.nicely and looking Ford to Friday. Last night, Joe Fitzpatrick kept the

:23:31. > :23:37.semifinal going after defeating bronze medallist from Delhi. Sean

:23:52. > :23:54.The fight will be live on BBC, Conor Coyle. We will have a special

:23:55. > :23:58.report on our late bulletin. Elsewhere, lawn bowls has produced

:23:59. > :24:01.one silver at these games already. Martin McHugh has booked a spot in

:24:02. > :24:04.tomorrow's quarterfinals, as have On the track at Hampden Park,

:24:05. > :24:08.20-year-old Leon Reid qualified for tomorrow's semifinals

:24:09. > :24:11.of the men's 200 metres. But the performance

:24:12. > :24:18.of the morning was by Katie Kirk, who was second in her heat to reach

:24:58. > :25:00.the world's best young footballers are on the North Coast of Northern

:25:01. > :25:03.Ireland for the Milk Cup tournament. It's a chance

:25:04. > :25:16.for local teams to take on some The under 17 is from our map might

:25:17. > :25:20.have expected the worst from Ballymoney, but they held their own

:25:21. > :25:27.on a night when Manchester United were a little off the boil. But when

:25:28. > :25:37.they did fire, they did so in style. And after another miscue, the red

:25:38. > :25:42.made it too. As our map tired, they conceded late on, but it was a brave

:25:43. > :25:50.performance and an experience to remember. The lads were picked from

:25:51. > :25:55.about 60 players, united were picked from all over the world, so we are

:25:56. > :26:02.happy. Our map take on another English giant this afternoon in

:26:03. > :26:11.Coleraine. Two defeats, but a special two days for Armagh. We will

:26:12. > :26:17.have more from the Milk Cup and the Commonwealth Games live from Glasgow

:26:18. > :26:20.tonight. Thank you, Stephen, it sounds like it will get better and

:26:21. > :26:27.better in Glasgow, something we cannot say about the weather. No, it

:26:28. > :26:32.is looking mixed and unsettled in the next few days. This is how it

:26:33. > :26:36.looked in Craigavon and are go, heavy showers too much of the

:26:37. > :26:39.Southeast and I suspect tomorrow a lot of us will be running for cover

:26:40. > :26:45.because there will be heavy downpours around. That mix of clear

:26:46. > :26:48.spells and showers tonight, from tomorrow a club of heavy showers

:26:49. > :26:54.will move in from the west and most of us can expect at least one sharp

:26:55. > :26:58.downpour. The showers will quickly become widespread with thunder and

:26:59. > :27:02.lightning through the morning, you can see where the heaviest showers

:27:03. > :27:06.are but they are not on for the whole day and there will be an

:27:07. > :27:10.improvement from the north west in the second half of the afternoon.

:27:11. > :27:16.Drier and brighter skies developed in the mid-afternoon, not as breezy

:27:17. > :27:21.today so when the sun eventually pops out temperatures will reach 20

:27:22. > :27:25.degrees, and you can see the last of that intent area of thundery showers

:27:26. > :27:29.leaving parts of County Down for Armagh in the middle of the

:27:30. > :27:34.afternoon. Not a bad end to the day tomorrow. On Friday there will again

:27:35. > :27:40.be a mix of sunshine and showers, we have another weather picture

:27:41. > :27:45.tonight, this fantastic parent captured in Dundrum. Friday this mix

:27:46. > :27:51.of sunshine and showers again still some sharp ones around and then on

:27:52. > :27:55.Friday this area of low pressure could bring some heavy rain and

:27:56. > :27:59.strong winds through Friday night and into Saturday before it all

:28:00. > :28:03.moves away on Sunday. It looks like the best dry weather on Saturday

:28:04. > :28:11.will be in the west, improving everywhere on Sunday. Join me for

:28:12. > :28:14.our late summary at 10:25pm.
