:00:00. > :00:00.Gompertz has the story. That's all

:00:00. > :00:15.The Irish Justice Minister, Frances Fitzgerald, says she's

:00:16. > :00:18.disturbed by a report in the Evening Herald that a Garda officer passed

:00:19. > :00:22.information to the IRA about two dissident republicans in custody.

:00:23. > :00:25.She's asked the Acting Garda Commissioner for a full report.

:00:26. > :00:31.Here's our Dublin correspondent Shane Harrison.

:00:32. > :00:39.I'll this is highly embarrassing for the Garda, coming 12 months after it

:00:40. > :00:49.was fine that an unnamed Drink Think colluded in the matter of senior RUC

:00:50. > :00:55.officers in the 1980s. -- after unnamed Garda. It is said that

:00:56. > :01:01.information was passed on by text to the IRA about dissident republicans

:01:02. > :01:06.held in a station within the past 12 months. It is reported the man

:01:07. > :01:11.involved has left the force but without disciplinary action taken

:01:12. > :01:15.against them by authorities, but the Department of Justice said this

:01:16. > :01:19.evening he is under criminal investigation in relation to this

:01:20. > :01:24.and another matter. A lawyer representing one of the RUC families

:01:25. > :01:29.at the tribunal said that lack of disciplinary action is totally not

:01:30. > :01:33.satisfactory and the Republic's Department of Justice and its

:01:34. > :01:34.minister, Frances Fitzgerald, has asked for a full report on the

:01:35. > :01:37.matter. A 23-year-old man has died

:01:38. > :01:40.in hospital after being injured in a car crash in Enniskillen

:01:41. > :01:42.at the weekend. He was in a car which crashed into

:01:43. > :01:45.the Johnston Bridge roundabout in An 18-year-old man was arrested

:01:46. > :01:50.on suspicion of a number of motoring offences

:01:51. > :01:55.and has been released on bail. A special needs teacher has won

:01:56. > :01:58.his appeal against a conviction for assaults

:01:59. > :02:00.against two 12-year-old girls with Stephen Downes of Glebe Gardens

:02:01. > :02:07.in Moira was convicted of cruelty to the two pupils at Parkview

:02:08. > :02:10.special school in Lisburn and given Mr Downes, who had been a teacher

:02:11. > :02:17.at the school since 1997, During the case,

:02:18. > :02:21.his solicitor acknowledged he had The former teacher said the two

:02:28. > :02:35.in the community say they're concerned

:02:36. > :02:37.about the impact of cuts as the row over the shortfall in the

:02:38. > :02:42.health budget rumbles on. Yesterday, BBC Newsline outlined

:02:43. > :02:45.some of the services that might be reduced

:02:46. > :02:49.in an attempt to balance the books. But some say there's

:02:50. > :02:59.a huge contradiction This resource centre in Derry

:03:00. > :03:03.provides a range of services for elderly people.

:03:04. > :03:06.Up to 30 come to the day centre. Another 80 get meals on wheels

:03:07. > :03:09.from here. A Stormont strategy called

:03:10. > :03:12.Transforming Your Care was intended to keep pensioners like these out

:03:13. > :03:16.of nursing homes and in their own homes by providing

:03:17. > :03:17.services in their communities. But now those services could be

:03:18. > :03:29.in line for cuts. Our massive contradiction there. And

:03:30. > :03:36.a massive impact it will have on all the people in the next 10-15 years.

:03:37. > :03:41.They come out with fancy documents and policies, but the cuts into

:03:42. > :03:43.community care, older people will be worse off.

:03:44. > :03:45.in line for cuts. Everything from emergency

:03:46. > :03:48.departments in hospitals to home visits by specialist nurses for

:03:49. > :03:51.people with chronic illnesses like type 1 diabetes are under pressure.

:03:52. > :03:58.Chris McCarroll is meant to get a home visit every three months.

:03:59. > :04:06.I last saw her in March this year, due another appointment in June or

:04:07. > :04:10.July, but I did not get an appointment and I called up and was

:04:11. > :04:17.told Saudi, it was unlikely I would get an appointment in December. So

:04:18. > :04:20.this is when I have had my diagnosis closely. But it could be nine

:04:21. > :04:21.months, rather than six months or three months.

:04:22. > :04:23.a home visit every three months. Tthe trust says demand

:04:24. > :04:28.for diabetic services outstrips its ability to supply it and it's

:04:29. > :04:32.having to prioritise patients. Edwin Poots says there's

:04:33. > :04:36.a ?140 million shortfall in the health budget.

:04:37. > :04:38.That led the spokesman for NI's GPs to warn of catastrophic

:04:39. > :04:42.and potentially life-threatening consequences. But the top doctor

:04:43. > :04:47.in one of our main emergency departments takes a different view.

:04:48. > :04:56.I would not use those terms. I would describe it as challenging. These

:04:57. > :05:03.cuts reportedly in the region of ?140 million, represents about 4% of

:05:04. > :05:07.the budget, a significant amount of money against challenging

:05:08. > :05:13.inflationary pressures. If the cuts went ahead, how could this

:05:14. > :05:19.department cope? There are some recommendations, such as locating

:05:20. > :05:23.GPI the virus, taking up the load of patients, and alternatives such as

:05:24. > :05:26.recruitment of staff from other areas. -- such as locating GP

:05:27. > :05:29.services. departments takes a different view.

:05:30. > :05:31.The health budget may be ring-fenced,

:05:32. > :05:35.but a growing elderly population with more complex medical needs

:05:36. > :05:42.means the pot to pay for health care is diminishing in real terms.

:05:43. > :05:45.A health pressure group in Londonderry has warned

:05:46. > :05:47.of the dangers of drinking during pregnancy.

:05:48. > :05:51.It's now begun a campaign to highlight the long term effects

:05:52. > :05:54.and claims there are mixed messages being given to expectant mothers

:05:55. > :05:59.Here's our North West reporter, Keiron Tourish.

:06:00. > :06:01.It's an exciting time when expecting your first child,

:06:02. > :06:06.and Caoimhe Deeney wanted to do everything right.

:06:07. > :06:08.She had researched the possible effects of drinking

:06:09. > :06:13.during pregnancy and decided to avoid alcohol completely.

:06:14. > :06:16.I felt that it was important for me not to drink alcohol.

:06:17. > :06:19.It was my first pregnancy, I was so excited,

:06:20. > :06:29.I was aware of the risks and I was afraid to cause any harm.

:06:30. > :06:33.I am glad now I did not, because I have a beautiful healthy baby here.

:06:34. > :06:34.And I would recommend that nobody drink alcohol,

:06:35. > :06:39.One pressure group, which promotes awareness

:06:40. > :06:47.around a range of health issues, says that giving children the best

:06:48. > :06:50.start in life should begin with the best start in life should begin with

:06:51. > :06:52.help about the long-term effects of drinking during pregnancy.

:06:53. > :06:55.We are trying to get across that the safest option is not

:06:56. > :07:00.What people do not realise is you would never give a child or toddler

:07:01. > :07:02.some alcohol to drink, and that is essentially what you're doing

:07:03. > :07:15.And a small baby in the womb cannot process alcohol

:07:16. > :07:20.One GP says there is no doubt about the potential harm that could

:07:21. > :07:26.be caused to babies if mothers overindulge while pregnant.

:07:27. > :07:29.Foetal alcohol syndrome is a very severe condition where the baby

:07:30. > :07:31.is permanently damaged by exposure to alcohol during pregnancy.

:07:32. > :07:34.What we are trying to do is everything possible to ensure that

:07:35. > :07:36.a healthy baby is born, hopefully with no problems whatsoever.

:07:37. > :07:38.And if you do not drink alcohol during pregnancy,

:07:39. > :07:50.Those behind the project say the most sensible option is to

:07:51. > :07:53.not drink alcohol during pregnancy, but recognise that some mums to be

:07:54. > :07:59.They have underlined the fact that help and advice is available.

:08:00. > :08:02.Thieves tried to steal an ATM in Castlerock

:08:03. > :08:06.A lorry, stolen from the Newmills Road in Coleraine,

:08:07. > :08:09.was driven to a petrol station on the Mussenden Road.

:08:10. > :08:12.It was reversed into the building a number of times

:08:13. > :08:18.The lorry was found at the Garvagh Road this morning

:08:19. > :08:33.Are we in for a decent weekend? A drier day than most for some, the

:08:34. > :08:38.North Coast holding onto some I'd break the rain. Eventually turning

:08:39. > :08:44.drier with clear skies and it will not be a cold night. We hold onto

:08:45. > :08:51.some brisk winds into Saturday, but not too bad, plenty of dry weather

:08:52. > :08:57.and decent spells of sunshine. Not completely dry, some showers into

:08:58. > :09:02.the afternoon, but plenty of dry weather to begin with, the sunshine

:09:03. > :09:05.kicking off the weekend, but slowed coming in from the waist in the

:09:06. > :09:14.afternoon and some showers moving eastwards. -- from the West. Across

:09:15. > :09:23.much of England, it is dry, but rain elsewhere. Across Ireland, apart

:09:24. > :09:27.from the North, southern areas much drier and brighter. For Northern

:09:28. > :09:33.Ireland, tomorrow afternoon, some showers making their way across all

:09:34. > :09:45.places, brightening up later in for a man, and sunshine tomorrow

:09:46. > :09:50.evening. -- in Fermanagh. A promising start on Sunday. Some

:09:51. > :09:56.stronger wind, patchy rain, clearing by the evening, then looking ahead

:09:57. > :10:03.to next week, mainly dry Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday and

:10:04. > :10:04.temperatures into the 20s. Great stuff, what you want to
