:00:00. > :00:09.Ian Paisley was buried today and in contrast to the decades he spent

:00:10. > :00:15.in the public eye, his funeral was a very private event.

:00:16. > :00:18.After a service in his home in east Belfast, the 88-year-old's

:00:19. > :00:22.remains were buried in a churchyard in Ballygowan in County Down.

:00:23. > :00:24.A public memorial service is expected to be held

:00:25. > :00:29.Business at the Assembly was cut short this afternoon after members

:00:30. > :00:34.expressed their thoughts on the former First Minister and DUP

:00:35. > :00:55.As a leader of men, a friend of the people, a servant of the state and

:00:56. > :00:59.the undisputed leader of unionism, Ian Paisley outclassed all those

:01:00. > :01:05.around him. We genuinely grew to like each other and in doing so, we

:01:06. > :01:14.confounded the world. And I think that was a good thing. He certainly

:01:15. > :01:20.made a huge effort. Our first conversation, he said, we don't need

:01:21. > :01:28.these people coming over from England, telling us what to do. It

:01:29. > :01:40.is an abiding regret, for me, that after his decades of principled

:01:41. > :01:42.stand, his legacy in this house is terrorists and government and a

:01:43. > :01:45.system not fit for purpose. Books of condolence have been opened

:01:46. > :01:48.to allow members of the public to express their sympathies

:01:49. > :01:50.on the death of Ian Paisley. Among those to sign at

:01:51. > :01:53.Belfast City Hall was the Sinn Fein The book there was opened

:01:54. > :01:56.by the Lord Mayor, Nicola Mallon, with members of the public queuing

:01:57. > :01:59.to record their thoughts. Many have been surprised

:02:00. > :02:01.at the private nature of BBC Newsline's Mark Simpson has been

:02:02. > :02:05.speaking to one of the few people outside the immediate

:02:06. > :02:08.family circle who was there and he contrasts today's service with the

:02:09. > :02:25.funerals of other unionist leaders. It's a side of Ian Paisley which was

:02:26. > :02:32.sometimes lost amid all the politics and protest. Paisley, the fiercely

:02:33. > :02:37.loyal family man. The Paisley family have rarely been out of the public

:02:38. > :02:42.eye but together, they decided today's final farewell should be

:02:43. > :02:46.private. The funeral could hardly have been more low-key. A family

:02:47. > :02:50.service at the family home in east Belfast followed by a private

:02:51. > :02:57.burial. One of the few people outside the family who was there was

:02:58. > :03:01.the Reverend. This was a very thought out decision and I believe

:03:02. > :03:05.it was the right decision. It reflects something of the humility

:03:06. > :03:10.of the family and that they wanted to express their grief outside

:03:11. > :03:15.public observation and that is exactly how it has turned out to be.

:03:16. > :03:20.Ian Paisley's fallout in recent years with senior members of the D U

:03:21. > :03:25.P and free presbyteries church may also have been factors in today's

:03:26. > :03:30.low-key approach. Whatever the reasons, his final journey was very

:03:31. > :03:52.different to that of his political hero. His funeral was very public.

:03:53. > :03:57.It was a grand public affair. Compare that to be quiet, private,

:03:58. > :04:03.rustic ceremony today the Ian Paisley. There a massive contrast.

:04:04. > :04:06.He never said exactly how he wanted to be remembered but when he stood

:04:07. > :04:13.down a storm on, you did reflect on his career. I have had a good

:04:14. > :04:18.innings. We had good friends and I reconciled with a lot of enemies.

:04:19. > :04:21.His family say there will be a public opportunity to pay tribute to

:04:22. > :04:24.Ian Paisley memorial service in the coming weeks.

:04:25. > :04:26.A major row has broken out over the appointment

:04:27. > :04:30.The Policing Board has given the name of its preferred candidate to

:04:31. > :04:34.the Justice Minister but Sinn Fein MLA Catriona Ruane has walked out

:04:35. > :04:39.of the recruitment process, saying it may have been compromised.

:04:40. > :04:42.Her claim has been rejected by the Policing Board.

:04:43. > :04:44.I've been hearing more from our home affairs correspondent,

:04:45. > :05:03.Two people were interviewed for this job. Their scores were so close that

:05:04. > :05:10.second interviews had to take place. So what's the problem? Just before

:05:11. > :05:15.the second interview, Sinn Fein's Representative withdrew from the

:05:16. > :05:18.process. She's said she believed the process may be compromised and the

:05:19. > :05:24.best course of action would be to have a fresh process. In spite of

:05:25. > :05:28.objections, the interview went ahead. Senior members of the

:05:29. > :05:32.policing board went to storm at this afternoon and met the justice

:05:33. > :05:39.minister because legally, he has to approve the appointment. I fully

:05:40. > :05:43.expect a statement confirming an appointment. Instead of that, I

:05:44. > :05:47.received a statement from the board saying a recommendation had been

:05:48. > :05:55.made to the Minister for him to consider. Members are surprised by

:05:56. > :05:59.this. Other board members say this is more about personalities and

:06:00. > :06:05.point out the one of the candidates in his current role sanctioned the

:06:06. > :06:09.arrest of Sinn Fein leader Gerry Adams earlier this year. Their

:06:10. > :06:14.suggestion is that Sinn Fein does not want to be part of any process

:06:15. > :06:16.that could lead to him being appointed Deputy Chief Constable.

:06:17. > :06:23.Sinn Fein said they would not comment further.

:06:24. > :06:25.Our home affairs correspondent, Vincent Kearney,

:06:26. > :06:28.Tonight, Catriona Ruane issued a statement saying she stood over

:06:29. > :06:31.her complaints and called for a fresh recruitment process for the

:06:32. > :06:34.post of Deputy Chief Constable but a spokesman for the Policing Board

:06:35. > :06:36.said it firmly rejected Ms Ruane's claims and said

:06:37. > :06:38.the process had been subject to extensive independent oversight

:06:39. > :06:44.Army bomb experts are attending a security alert at

:06:45. > :06:46.Queen's University in Belfast after a suspicious package was found

:06:47. > :06:53.A pharmaceutical conference hosted by the Health Minister Edwin,

:06:54. > :06:55.which was taking place in the Great Hall earlier this evening,

:06:56. > :06:59.had to be stopped early as a result of the alert.

:07:00. > :07:02.A woman who gave birth at the Ulster Hospital in Dundonald is to

:07:03. > :07:07.be awarded ?400,000 compensation in a negligence case.

:07:08. > :07:12.She developed deep vein thrombosis, a potentially fatal blood clot.

:07:13. > :07:29.The 41-year-old woman will receive the pay-out to settle in medical

:07:30. > :07:37.negligence case. The women developed deep vein thrombosis in her leg

:07:38. > :07:43.after the birth of her first child in 2009. Her lawsuit said that the

:07:44. > :07:49.risk to her had not been properly assessed and that she should have

:07:50. > :07:52.been given preventative drugs. It was also alleged further negligence

:07:53. > :07:57.occurred when she first went to the accident and emergency department

:07:58. > :08:02.following the birth, complaining of symptoms. The woman says she feels

:08:03. > :08:07.old before their time and that it affects every aspect of her life.

:08:08. > :08:09.Liability and compensation was agreed.

:08:10. > :08:12.Up to 60 jobs are at risk at a private hospital in Ballykelly.

:08:13. > :08:16.The North West Independent Hospital has started redundancy talks and

:08:17. > :08:21.says up to a third of its 180-strong workforce could be affected.

:08:22. > :08:23.It says the move is directly linked to the

:08:24. > :08:26.Department of Health's decision to stop using private clinics to reduce

:08:27. > :08:52.High pressure kept things settled through the weekend and it is giving

:08:53. > :08:57.us a settled start the week as well. Even though that high starts to slip

:08:58. > :09:01.away, we are still between weather systems so the emphasis is on mainly

:09:02. > :09:06.dry conditions. Cloud is likely to be an issue but some brighter, sunny

:09:07. > :09:10.spells and the winds should be light and moderate. Tonight, we have the

:09:11. > :09:15.light winds with a lot of cloud which will close in. It is likely to

:09:16. > :09:23.bring mist and hill fog but it should stay dry. It's pretty mild as

:09:24. > :09:27.well. Into tomorrow, the dry-clean continues. Still a good deal of

:09:28. > :09:35.cloud, particularly during the morning, a grey old start with that

:09:36. > :09:40.Mr low cloud. It is pretty much the same. A cloudy start across much of

:09:41. > :09:45.Ireland and Britain. Cool, wet and windy for the far north-east of

:09:46. > :09:55.Scotland. As there will be across the South of England. As the day

:09:56. > :10:00.wears on, the cloud gradually lifts. Temperatures into the low to mid

:10:01. > :10:07.20s. For Northern Ireland, a good deal of cloud but a few breaks

:10:08. > :10:11.giving bright and sunny intervals. That may spark of one or two sharp

:10:12. > :10:17.showers but they will be the exception rather than the rule.

:10:18. > :10:21.Generally, dry and it stays dry to the rest of the week.
