:00:00. > :00:17.Good evening, the headlines on BBC Newsline:

:00:18. > :00:23.200 former residents of a boys home in County Down say they were abused.

:00:24. > :00:29.Traditional musician Francis McPeake is cleared of sex abuse charges.

:00:30. > :00:32.The head of the Civil Service here is set to raise budget

:00:33. > :00:44.Here in Rory McIlroy's hometown, there has been a dispute over a

:00:45. > :00:47.flag. Rory McIlroy and Graeme McDowell

:00:48. > :00:49.back Darren Clarke to spearhead the There's a little bit of rain

:00:50. > :00:54.for the last day of what has been It could be one

:00:55. > :01:04.of the worst cases of institutional 200 former residents of Rubane House

:01:05. > :01:11.boys home in County Down say they were sexually or physically abused

:01:12. > :01:14.by living there. 55 of them have come forward to

:01:15. > :01:18.the Historical Institutional Abuse inquiry with testimony of

:01:19. > :01:34.their time at the church run home. In the middle of the last century,

:01:35. > :01:39.this house in the country became a home and school two young boys. The

:01:40. > :01:47.enquiry was told the house is now a private family home. From 1950 and

:01:48. > :01:52.1985, 1,000 boys aged 11 upwards were sent here, mainly from north

:01:53. > :02:02.and west Belfast. Was run on behalf of the catholic diocese of Down and

:02:03. > :02:07.Connor. Some boys were abused. The oral evidence over the coming weeks

:02:08. > :02:16.will continue to be extremely harrowing. However, individuals have

:02:17. > :02:22.come forward to the enquiry with the desire, however difficult it may be

:02:23. > :02:26.for them, and wanting the opportunity to publicly explain what

:02:27. > :02:38.happened to them when they were supposed to have been in the care of

:02:39. > :02:51.the diocese of Down and Connor. The notorious paedophile priest Father

:02:52. > :02:55.Brendan Smith also was raised today. Today's submissions heard when the

:02:56. > :03:00.policeman submitted a file to public prosecutors, he only -- also sent

:03:01. > :03:08.them a letter saying the full horror of the abuse was in a power and

:03:09. > :03:12.abuse at King for a children's home. Over the coming weeks, the enquiry

:03:13. > :03:15.will hear the accounts of 55 former residents who claimed they were

:03:16. > :03:20.physically or sexually abused. The enquiry has already established that

:03:21. > :03:26.150 other former residence, previously complained of abuse. The

:03:27. > :03:30.enquiry was told that the order went back to 1958 and they revealed today

:03:31. > :03:35.for the first time that the order was aware of one brother who was in

:03:36. > :03:37.charge of Rubane House who was involved in extensive and grave

:03:38. > :03:46.sexual abuse of boys before, during and after his time at Rubane House.

:03:47. > :03:49.The order of the church did not release him.

:03:50. > :03:54.The folk musician, Francis McPeake, has been cleared of 12 sex offences

:03:55. > :03:59.He is head of one of Ireland's best-known traditional music

:04:00. > :04:01.families and had always denied that he had a

:04:02. > :04:19.This case has had a high profile. Francis McPeake on the left of the

:04:20. > :04:22.picture is 72 and one of Ireland's leading to additional musicians. A

:04:23. > :04:26.woman, now 20, claimed when she was 15, France's has had a sexual

:04:27. > :04:31.relationship with her this afternoon, Francis McPeake was

:04:32. > :04:36.cleared of all charges against him. As the foreman of the jury announced

:04:37. > :04:41.the decisions, Francis McPeake looked at the ceiling, smiled and

:04:42. > :04:44.breeds sighs of relief. The woman who he had been accused of abusing

:04:45. > :04:49.wept and left the courtroom before all the verdicts were delivered. The

:04:50. > :04:53.woman had claimed she and Francis McPeake had first become intimate

:04:54. > :04:57.during a music trip to the Republic in 2009. She did not accuse him of

:04:58. > :05:02.forcing her to do anything but prosecutors claimed he had taken

:05:03. > :05:06.advantage of her. During the trial here which lasted just over a week,

:05:07. > :05:11.the jury heard evidence from the girl herself, several of her friends

:05:12. > :05:14.and family members. Francis McPeake maintained he had done nothing

:05:15. > :05:20.wrong. He said the allegations were false and malicious. Francis McPeake

:05:21. > :05:24.told the court he had travelled the world being music for 16 years and

:05:25. > :05:29.had taught 5,000 people, many of them to run. He said he had offered

:05:30. > :05:31.support and guidance to a troubled teenager who was going through

:05:32. > :05:36.personal problems but he claims nothing sexual or intimate ever

:05:37. > :05:42.happened between them. After he was acquitted, the judge told him he was

:05:43. > :05:46.free to go. France is the peak -- Francis McPeake find the jury and

:05:47. > :05:47.did not want to talk to reporters as he left. The strain of the trial

:05:48. > :05:50.showed. The BBC has learned that the head of

:05:51. > :05:54.the Northern Ireland Civil Service is likely to contact the Treasury

:05:55. > :05:57.later this week to raise his It is understood Dr Malcolm McKibben

:05:58. > :06:03.will say he believes the executive The Deputy First Minister has called

:06:04. > :06:10.for a freeze on millions in fines for the Assembly's

:06:11. > :06:26.in bringing in welfare reform. Stormont has grappled with many

:06:27. > :06:30.problems before but disarming a Star Wars storm trooper on his way into a

:06:31. > :06:36.charity event is not one of them. The slightly forlorn storm trooper

:06:37. > :06:42.was eventually allowed in, minus his bluster. If only all the

:06:43. > :06:43.here could be resolved as easily. Yesterday, Theresa Villiers

:06:44. > :06:47.announced a fresh round Yesterday, Theresa Villiers

:06:48. > :06:51.involving the British and Irish Lions and the five executive

:06:52. > :06:55.parties. In order to get those talks off to a good start, Sinn Fein says

:06:56. > :07:00.the UK Government should freeze nearly ?90 million in fines it is

:07:01. > :07:07.imposing because of Stormont's delay in implementing welfare changes. The

:07:08. > :07:13.upcoming talks need to happen with speed, they need to happen against a

:07:14. > :07:21.backdrop of freedom of threats from any description, and that includes

:07:22. > :07:22.the threat of the imposition of the nearly ?7 million. The Northern

:07:23. > :07:25.Ireland Office says it is not nearly ?7 million. The Northern

:07:26. > :07:29.to expect taxpayers to pay the difference for a more expensive

:07:30. > :07:34.welfare system here. The First Minister welcomes -- reckons it is

:07:35. > :07:38.impractical. This is something that has passed the post. The Prime

:07:39. > :07:41.Minister has told us, the Deputy Prime Minister has told us, the

:07:42. > :07:47.Secretary of State for Northern Ireland has told us. We had at most

:07:48. > :07:52.recently at a Tory party conference that there is no further

:07:53. > :07:57.negotiation. Like last year 's talks chaired by the US diplomat Richard

:07:58. > :08:00.Haass, the latest negotiations are due to conclude around Christmas.

:08:01. > :08:05.Like previously, the politicians will wrestle with the conflict

:08:06. > :08:12.issues of flights, parades and the past but the agenda will include

:08:13. > :08:18.resolving economic problems. A tall order according to one politician

:08:19. > :08:22.who has not received an invite. It seems the Secretary of State is only

:08:23. > :08:25.interested in hearing from the parties of failure and wishes to

:08:26. > :08:31.ignore that in the last election, there were 100,000 people who voted

:08:32. > :08:37.for parties other than the executive parties. Given the failure of the

:08:38. > :08:41.talks last Christmas, the public could be forgiven for having low

:08:42. > :08:45.expectations of this new round of negotiations. The fact the

:08:46. > :08:47.politicians will be grappling with even more difficult issues either

:08:48. > :08:49.provide the conditions for a significant agreement or an even

:08:50. > :09:01.bigger breakdown. Find out how I got trapped into a

:09:02. > :09:04.scientific experiment and it all went terribly well.

:09:05. > :09:09.A partially detonated explosive device found in an Orange Hall last

:09:10. > :09:13.Thursday has only now been removed from outside its front door.

:09:14. > :09:17.A saucepan containing what is thought to be home-made explosive

:09:18. > :09:26.was left at a hall in Carnagh in Keady in County Armagh.

:09:27. > :09:31.The device exploded here last Thursday evening. The bank going

:09:32. > :09:35.around the wooded valley just outside Keady was not until Friday

:09:36. > :09:41.that the remains of the bomb were found. A saucepan, torn by the

:09:42. > :09:45.blast, its lid was found metres away in long grass. The device and

:09:46. > :09:51.chemicals, but the inside, only partially detonated. The damage we

:09:52. > :09:58.have suffered is the third of the community, the heart of our members

:09:59. > :10:04.and some of the folks there, we believe this is all behind us.

:10:05. > :10:09.Today, the area around the blast was cordoned off while army and police

:10:10. > :10:12.investigated the device and searched the surrounding woodlands. For all

:10:13. > :10:16.of Saturday and Sunday, there was no court. The public were free to

:10:17. > :10:20.wander around the site and investigate the scene and the device

:10:21. > :10:25.for themselves. Questions then about balancing the safety of police

:10:26. > :10:28.officers with that of the public. The police have issued a statement

:10:29. > :10:33.saying they face a significant ongoing threat from terrorists which

:10:34. > :10:36.has shown a determined to kill police officers so they do say they

:10:37. > :10:41.worry about police safety but they also worry about the safety of the

:10:42. > :10:47.officers. I can understand the police's response because they did

:10:48. > :10:50.not know whether they were being lured into something else. All the

:10:51. > :10:52.wood land in the neighbourhood all has to be checked out before people

:10:53. > :11:00.can commit. People in the has to be checked out before people

:11:01. > :11:02.they believe the attack was carried out by a dissident republican group

:11:03. > :11:07.but the police say it is too early to draw any conclusions. The code

:11:08. > :11:09.and has now been removed and the roads are repugnant. Device has been

:11:10. > :11:20.It may be the 21st-century but engineering and technology are

:11:21. > :11:24.To change that though, girls as young as 13 are being shown

:11:25. > :11:27.that they too could have careers building roads and bridges.

:11:28. > :11:30.Our education correspondent has been watching potential new recruits as

:11:31. > :11:44.Female role models from the worlds of technology and engineering in the

:11:45. > :11:49.morning with your ten girls designing a new attraction in the W

:11:50. > :11:52.5% in Belfast. At this school there were two girls and 18 boys in the

:11:53. > :11:55.technology class and she was even more in the energy at university.

:11:56. > :12:00.Now she is working for a more in the energy at university.

:12:01. > :12:06.on water supplies. Rachel helps build roads and bridges after a

:12:07. > :12:12.false start in architecture. I started to study architecture but

:12:13. > :12:18.they said, don't worry about how this will stand up, that is the

:12:19. > :12:23.engineer's problem. I decided then to study civil engineering at

:12:24. > :12:27.Queens. Plenty of girls to the Stem subjects of science, technology and

:12:28. > :12:32.engineering and maths but they aim for a guaranteed job like medicine.

:12:33. > :12:36.Only 18% of degree students in engineering and technology are

:12:37. > :12:42.women. W 5 runs a series called fantastic females to change that.

:12:43. > :12:51.When they are looking at science related industries whereas boys tend

:12:52. > :12:55.to be more philosophical and a study subjects they enjoy and are good at.

:12:56. > :12:59.Today's experiments were aimed at showing how projects like climate

:13:00. > :13:03.are designed and built and it has inspired some 13-year-olds as they

:13:04. > :13:07.make crucial subject decisions. I have always liked maths in school

:13:08. > :13:12.and my teacher tensions it a lot. I have thought about it before. I

:13:13. > :13:17.haven't really thought about it before but now it has opened my eyes

:13:18. > :13:19.to it and only enjoy today. The point of this is to show how

:13:20. > :13:23.engineering design can point of this is to show how

:13:24. > :13:28.reality but the reality for me is I was not expecting to climb today and

:13:29. > :13:30.I am not exactly dressed for it but I will have a go even if I am a

:13:31. > :13:39.little big for this! Having two, three or even more

:13:40. > :13:44.turns life right on its head. It might be just a little bit easier

:13:45. > :13:48.if your children are among the 700 multiples under four in

:13:49. > :13:53.the Southern Health Trust's area. It has just appointed the UK's

:13:54. > :14:09.first health visitor dedicated When you have twins, it is

:14:10. > :14:14.beds and high chairs that double up, the workload, financial pressures,

:14:15. > :14:22.just about everything goes off the scale. As it did for first-time mum

:14:23. > :14:25.-- this first-time mum. When any mother finds out she is pregnant

:14:26. > :14:32.with twins, the first few days, you're just in shock. Especially

:14:33. > :14:39.myself, having babies and then going to two BB. For Vicky and anyone else

:14:40. > :14:45.in the southern trust area, help is at hand. Specialist expert help in

:14:46. > :14:49.the shape of this woman. Those challenges are there and parents

:14:50. > :14:55.need that additional advice and support and my role will be in

:14:56. > :15:00.addition to their core health visitation service but this is to

:15:01. > :15:07.offer specific advice with parents with multiple. The post has been

:15:08. > :15:12.created in conjunction with the twins and multiple births

:15:13. > :15:19.Association. It has lots of different challenges so that is why

:15:20. > :15:25.we came up with this idea and hopefully supporting them. With

:15:26. > :15:32.older mothers and IBF being to contribute factors to multiple

:15:33. > :15:59.births, it seems likely that there this trust is leading,

:16:00. > :16:05.Drive into Hollywood and you cannot miss the banner of support for Rory

:16:06. > :16:10.McIlroy as well as the pictures and road signs. After the owner of this

:16:11. > :16:15.house showed his support with a European flag for Rory's Ryder Cup

:16:16. > :16:20.team, the police appeared. There had been a complaint about the flag. The

:16:21. > :16:24.man who owns the house is a big golf fan and a member of Hollywood golf

:16:25. > :16:27.club. He did not want to appear on camera but he told me he was stunned

:16:28. > :16:32.when two police officers arrived here yesterday morning. He says at

:16:33. > :16:38.first, they didn't seem to know what the flag was. He explained it is a

:16:39. > :16:41.European flag for the Ryder Cup. They said the person who complained

:16:42. > :16:47.thought it was some sort of Arabic flag. In a statement, the police

:16:48. > :16:50.said officers received a report from a member of the public that a

:16:51. > :16:57.slightly believed to be offensive had been erected. Police attended

:16:58. > :17:00.and no offence was detected. In Hollywood, news of the Ryder Cup

:17:01. > :17:05.flag incident is the talk of the town. In some ways, you could not

:17:06. > :17:09.make it up! It is depressing in some ways that we would be focused on

:17:10. > :17:13.that. People are entitled to flight would be focused on that. People are

:17:14. > :17:17.entitled to able to sell our success. You may have won the Ryder

:17:18. > :17:19.Cup but the owner of this like says he is now going to take it down to

:17:20. > :17:24.try to keep the peace. The celebrations in Gleneagles no

:17:25. > :17:27.doubt went on long into the night Rory McIlroy and Graeme McDowell led

:17:28. > :17:35.the European charge in the singles yesterday securing

:17:36. > :17:53.points early in the day as Paul Standing tall, Captain Paul McGinley

:17:54. > :18:01.had plenty to smile about this morning. His opposite number, Tom

:18:02. > :18:07.Watson, packed his bags for home without the Ryder Cup. The night

:18:08. > :18:10.before the trophy was successfully defended with Rory McIlroy and

:18:11. > :18:18.Graeme McDowell playing a crucial role. Both won their matches to set

:18:19. > :18:21.you up on their way. The first two points on the board were from

:18:22. > :18:25.Northern Ireland. Unbelievable and I was so happy to turn my match

:18:26. > :18:32.around. It was incredible seeing him claw back gave me an extra

:18:33. > :18:41.motivation to get my point as well. You were five up! I wanted to get

:18:42. > :18:50.six or seven up. Jamie Donaldson may have hit the winning shot but Rory

:18:51. > :18:56.McIlroy had earlier produced a breathtaking display. The American

:18:57. > :19:02.player he beat left today only full of praise for the world number one.

:19:03. > :19:14.He was ready to go right out of the gate. It is hard to catch up from

:19:15. > :19:21.that. Admiring his masterclass was the man who had delivered the

:19:22. > :19:27.team's motivational speech. He is the greatest player in the world.

:19:28. > :19:33.Four out of the first five, cruise control after that. The enjoy

:19:34. > :19:43.watching him? Absolutely. Among those celebrating the victory by

:19:44. > :19:46.members of Graeme McDowell's family. Unbelievable, the only words I can

:19:47. > :19:56.think. When he is under pressure, he becomes another person but happy

:19:57. > :20:01.days! Are successful Ryder Cup duo reflected on a sensational summer. I

:20:02. > :20:05.am happy to be the number two player in Northern Ireland. Anywhere close

:20:06. > :20:08.to this man is pretty decent! Rory McIlroy said this would be the icing

:20:09. > :20:16.on the cake, this is the icing on the cake for me as well. For Graeme

:20:17. > :20:27.McDowell, it is a very special thing and to win the rider cup as part of

:20:28. > :20:31.the great team. Personally, we have always been there and this week has

:20:32. > :20:36.been great for us. We have really enjoyed it. We're probably stronger

:20:37. > :20:41.than we have ever been after what we have been three for the last couple

:20:42. > :20:46.of years. We will be fine. Europe win an eighth Ryder Cup in the last

:20:47. > :20:50.ten attempts. Attention now turns to the next one in America in two years

:20:51. > :20:51.time with Northern Ireland's Darren Clarke tipped to be the next

:20:52. > :20:54.captain. Rory McIlroy and Graeme McDowell

:20:55. > :20:57.both say they now want their fellow major winner

:20:58. > :21:00.Darren Clarke as the next European captain for the defence of the Ryder

:21:01. > :21:03.Cup in Minnesota in two years. Stephen Watson put that to

:21:04. > :21:12.Paul McGinley. What I will do now is to gather

:21:13. > :21:19.information over the next few months and top to the guys, the players,

:21:20. > :21:23.and we will take that into the meeting will stop Graeme McDowell

:21:24. > :21:28.has said he would like Darren Clarke and he hopes you and him and put

:21:29. > :21:32.differences aside, one that be a problem? No issues whatsoever. I

:21:33. > :21:35.have known Darren Clarke for a long time, since we have been 15 years of

:21:36. > :21:38.age and there are no issues there. The uncertain coaching situation

:21:39. > :21:40.at Ulster Rugby goes on. Perhaps they could do with it being

:21:41. > :21:43.resolved after a disappointing defeat

:21:44. > :21:58.in Italy against Zebre on Saturday, The game turned on its head ten

:21:59. > :22:01.minutes in. The cameras did not catch what happened here but it

:22:02. > :22:08.clearly showed a punch from Ulsterman.

:22:09. > :22:11.clearly showed a punch from referee had no option but to send

:22:12. > :22:14.him off. Ulster were down to 14 men and the Italians had their tails up.

:22:15. > :22:18.They had a try disallowed early in the second half before they made the

:22:19. > :22:26.breakthrough to put all the pressure and the visitors and favourites. The

:22:27. > :22:32.tight head prop is going to score! Two penalties from Ian Humphreys

:22:33. > :22:48.brought Ulster back into it but they thought they had taken the lead.

:22:49. > :22:53.Only for a Tommy -- Tommy Bowe try to be penalised. The lead was

:22:54. > :22:59.extended and they held on for a famous win. For Ulster, the young

:23:00. > :23:01.the big start to the season comes to a grinding halt.

:23:02. > :23:04.Just one point separates the top five teams at the top

:23:05. > :23:07.Tonight two of those sides, Crusaders and Linfield meet after

:23:08. > :23:24.Linfield returned to winning ways after a 3-1 win over Ballinamallard.

:23:25. > :23:32.The manager was not happy and became against Crusaders will take place

:23:33. > :23:35.tonight. Anderson disgusted -- I am just discussed at having to ask

:23:36. > :23:42.players to play twice. Players coming back from injuries, it is

:23:43. > :23:46.hard on their bodies and for players who play a part time to have to go

:23:47. > :23:56.and play on Monday is ridiculous. Crusaders came from behind twice to

:23:57. > :24:01.defeat Institute. It finished 3-2. Jude Winchester seemed to have

:24:02. > :24:06.sealed a win for Cliftonville after this thumping shot against Palomino.

:24:07. > :24:11.But the home side responded and right at the very end of normal

:24:12. > :24:16.time, Alan Jenkins equalised and finished at. Coleraine trailed
