:00:00. > 3:59:59stay mild. Thank you. That's all from the BBC News at Six.

:00:00. > :00:14.Goodbye from me, Good evening,

:00:15. > :00:19.the headlines on BBC Newsline. The police investigate the attempted

:00:20. > :00:23.murder of a police officer. A cross-border manhunt after thieves

:00:24. > :00:26.use a digger to rip a cash machine A claim that an IRA break-in

:00:27. > :00:31.at a top security prison was allowed How holiday-makers

:00:32. > :00:47.from here are still stuck in The flights today were cancelled and

:00:48. > :00:51.some people went to the airport and have come back and really is no word

:00:52. > :00:52.about our flights and when we are leaving.

:00:53. > :00:54.The beach clean-up that revealed the shocking amount of rubbish left

:00:55. > :01:02.Ulster Rugby ushers in a new era with a trip to Newport.

:01:03. > :01:04.And I wouldn't venture too far without

:01:05. > :01:13.The police are treating as attempted murder an incident

:01:14. > :01:17.in south Armagh when a police officer was struck by a lorry.

:01:18. > :01:20.The officer was taking part in an investigation into the

:01:21. > :01:25.overnight theft of a cash machine from a garage in the Newry area.

:01:26. > :01:32.transporting a car on the Mullaghduff Road, Cullyhanna.

:01:33. > :01:35.As one of the officers got out of his vehicle, the lorry drove

:01:36. > :01:39.The PSNI helicopter was used to transport him to hospital

:01:40. > :01:48.in Belfast, where he's in a serious condition.

:01:49. > :01:57.During the eight year and robbery last night, the thief used a bigger

:01:58. > :01:59.too that the machine out of a wall at the petrol station.

:02:00. > :02:01.The machine had just been replaced earlier this year, after

:02:02. > :02:17.Any follow-up operation one man was arrested and two others ran off.

:02:18. > :02:25.3:30am this morning and a gang of masked men arrived at a station with

:02:26. > :02:28.a van and a bigger store and just moments ago from a building site a

:02:29. > :02:37.few hundred yards ago and they quickly put it into action. --

:02:38. > :02:41.digger stolen. After lifting the ATM onto the trailer they made their

:02:42. > :02:50.escape leaving behind utter devastation. This afternoon in

:02:51. > :02:56.number of searches were carried out in the Inniskeen area. They came

:02:57. > :03:00.upon a white van and the men fled. One man in his 20s was caught and

:03:01. > :03:06.arrested and a widespread search is on for the other two. Inside the van

:03:07. > :03:10.officers found the ATM which is being forensically examined. The

:03:11. > :03:16.previous cash machine was taken in the same fashion six years ago.

:03:17. > :03:20.After years of campaigning a replacement was eventually put in

:03:21. > :03:26.place. Six years ago the same scene and lame actually managed to get

:03:27. > :03:31.away with it this time. The damage, I don't know where to start. Six

:03:32. > :03:36.years ago we stood here with a similar incident and it wasn't easy

:03:37. > :03:47.to get another ATM? April this year, it took me six years to get it. This

:03:48. > :03:54.firm from England took us on. We were happy with the business we were

:03:55. > :04:01.making but no company would take you on again. This afternoon, a crane

:04:02. > :04:05.had to be brought in to move the damaged digger and clear the road.

:04:06. > :04:09.That meant a last day of trading for all the businesses on this road but

:04:10. > :04:13.for the Gregory is, it is just the first of many such days as they

:04:14. > :04:22.attempt to repair the damage. I don't know where to go from here.

:04:23. > :04:27.What do you do? Going to try for another machine, try my best. We

:04:28. > :04:31.will give cash back and do what we can. The police want anyone with

:04:32. > :04:33.information about what happened here to contact the detectives.

:04:34. > :04:40.Downing Street has confirmed that the First Minister

:04:41. > :04:43.and the Deputy First Minister met the Prime Minister at Number Ten

:04:44. > :04:45.this afternoon, in the latest move to get agreement

:04:46. > :04:48.I'm joined by our political correspondent, Stephen Walker.

:04:49. > :04:59.We know that the Deputy first Minister and first Minister went

:05:00. > :05:03.into Downing Street this afternoon, meant to be a private meeting but it

:05:04. > :05:08.is obviously in the public domain now. Lead is no official word on the

:05:09. > :05:11.content of the meeting but what we understand is that they covered

:05:12. > :05:16.financial matters, a big thing in terms of the talks process, and this

:05:17. > :05:19.comes after two days of earlier this was on the view last night and

:05:20. > :05:25.talked about the possibility of a deal next week. We have the Sinn

:05:26. > :05:31.Fein president Gerry Adams talking about the fact that he predicts the

:05:32. > :05:34.talks will conclude soon. The prime minister you will remember talked

:05:35. > :05:38.about the end of October being a deadline and we are now into

:05:39. > :05:44.November, so today's meeting was meant to be kept private. It will be

:05:45. > :05:47.interpreted as a good sign that they have gone to London and you will

:05:48. > :05:50.remember that the prime minister only tends to get involved that

:05:51. > :05:51.these kinds of stages when a deal looks likely.

:05:52. > :05:53.The Police Ombudsman is investigating a claim that the IRA

:05:54. > :05:55.was allowed to break into the offices of Special Branch

:05:56. > :06:02.in Castlereagh to protect an agent within the organisation.

:06:03. > :06:04.The allegation has been made by a former Special Branch officer.

:06:05. > :06:14.Our Home Affairs Correspondent Vincent Kearney reports.

:06:15. > :06:21.What happened here that Castlereagh police station on St Patrick's Day

:06:22. > :06:25.13 years ago was one of the biggest and most embarrassing security

:06:26. > :06:28.breaches of the troubles. An IRA unit broke into the branches of

:06:29. > :06:35.special Branch and stole dozens of highly sensitive documents. It

:06:36. > :06:40.included a list of special Branch officers as well as codenames of

:06:41. > :06:45.paramilitary agents and handlers. Dozens of police agents had to move

:06:46. > :06:50.house after being warned their security was compromised. The IRA

:06:51. > :06:54.and Sinn Fein denied republicans were responsible. Sinn Fein has not

:06:55. > :06:58.been involved in any of these alleges that incidence and the IRA

:06:59. > :07:05.has said they are not involved and we believe them. But the police say

:07:06. > :07:07.it was the IRA. No one was ever convicted of involvement in the lead

:07:08. > :07:13.and none of the stolen documents have ever been recovered. Now a

:07:14. > :07:18.former member of special Branch has contacted a Belfast law firm and

:07:19. > :07:22.claim the break and was allowed to happen to protect a high-level

:07:23. > :07:26.legions within the IRA. The company wrote to the Chief Constable and he

:07:27. > :07:31.referred the issue to the police ombudsman. The police ombudsman has

:07:32. > :07:35.confirmed that an investigation has been launched and investigators have

:07:36. > :07:40.asked to meet the former special Branch officer to question him about

:07:41. > :07:44.his claims. His lawyer says he will investigate fully. The PSNI says it

:07:45. > :07:54.will be inappropriate to comment while the investigation takes place.

:07:55. > :07:59.The BBC understands that around a third of the teaching staff at one

:08:00. > :08:04.of Belfast's skills phoned in sick this week. This comes soon after an

:08:05. > :08:11.apparent industrial relations dispute. Our education correspondent

:08:12. > :08:15.reports. It has been a difficult week at this

:08:16. > :08:22.school. My understanding is that on Wednesday over 25 teachers out of a

:08:23. > :08:27.staff of around 70 called in sick. An apparent dispute at the school

:08:28. > :08:31.which has 1000 pupils centres on an incident prior to half term. Many

:08:32. > :08:36.staff are concerned about the way it was handled and sent a letter to the

:08:37. > :08:38.principal. At one stage, many of the principal. At one stage, many of

:08:39. > :08:44.these features stood silently at the doors of their classrooms. A staff

:08:45. > :08:49.meeting on Monday has been described as robust. At the moment there has

:08:50. > :08:53.been little comment from the teaching unions. The union which

:08:54. > :08:56.represents most teachers say they and other unions were attempting to

:08:57. > :09:01.resolve what they described as an industrial relations issue. It is my

:09:02. > :09:06.understanding around 15 teachers called in sick today. The Council

:09:07. > :09:08.for local schools says there will be a meeting next week involving it,

:09:09. > :09:13.the local governors and unions. It's been another difficult day for

:09:14. > :09:15.holiday-makers from Northern Ireland caught up in the flight chaos in the

:09:16. > :09:19.Egyptian resort Sharm el-Sheikh. Some flights resumed,

:09:20. > :09:21.but not all of them. There are ongoing security concerns

:09:22. > :09:24.following the weekend plane crash which may have been caused

:09:25. > :09:26.by a terrorist attack. BBC Newsline's Mark

:09:27. > :09:40.Simpson has more. Long queues and long waits and no

:09:41. > :09:44.guarantee of a flight at the end of it all. The only option for some

:09:45. > :09:49.families of to put a few more days back at their holiday Hotel. Among

:09:50. > :09:54.those stranded as the Irish league footballer or in Bradley. He is the

:09:55. > :09:59.top scorer for his team this season and should be playing tomorrow.

:10:00. > :10:05.Instead he is stuck in Egypt's trying desperately to get home. I'm

:10:06. > :10:11.supposed to be playing Thursday and then we were told we would be home

:10:12. > :10:16.yesterday and then today and no tomorrow, so we have had to pack and

:10:17. > :10:22.unpack and go to the airport for a couple of hours and then a taxi

:10:23. > :10:25.back. But nothing you can do. Ruth Keenan from Belfast are supposed to

:10:26. > :10:32.fly home tomorrow but that doesn't look likely. I am still here at the

:10:33. > :10:39.Hotel envy Sharm el-Sheikh. EasyJet have contacted us again to tell me

:10:40. > :10:43.to remain home and some flights have been cancelled today so some people

:10:44. > :10:44.sent to the airport have come back but no word about our flight and

:10:45. > :10:52.when we will be leaving. flights have taken off. As for

:10:53. > :10:56.everyone else, all flights have taken off. As for

:10:57. > :10:58.sit around and wait and hope. The chairman of the

:10:59. > :11:00.Prison Officers Association says he's not surprised by yesterday's

:11:01. > :11:03.damning report on Maghaberry Jail. Inspectors said a failure of

:11:04. > :11:06.leadership has contributed to the jail becoming unsafe, unstable and

:11:07. > :11:12.the most dangerous jail in the UK. Finlay Spratt says cuts

:11:13. > :11:14.of 30 million to the prisons budget have also starved

:11:15. > :11:18.the service of resources. He was speaking after

:11:19. > :11:21.a remembrance wreath-laying ceremony at the Prison Service training

:11:22. > :11:24.college in Millisle, the last such ceremony to take place there before

:11:25. > :11:27.the facility is closed next year. Mr. Spratt said staff shortages were

:11:28. > :11:50.to blame for problems at Maghaberry. It is running, as I speak to you

:11:51. > :11:53.today, at 99 staff short of our normal complement and on top of that

:11:54. > :12:02.they have quite a lot of officers who wrote on set, and over this last

:12:03. > :12:07.year, there have been approximately 70 staff who have left. The Prison

:12:08. > :12:12.Service never replaced those staff so it is impossible for us to run a

:12:13. > :12:18.normal regime when we don't even have the complement of staff we

:12:19. > :12:22.should have. Still to come, one of the most important but least known

:12:23. > :12:25.military figures of World War II, the man born in a farmhouse in

:12:26. > :12:31.County Antrim. The former managing partner of

:12:32. > :12:33.Belfast solicitors firm, Tughan's has been questioned under caution

:12:34. > :12:35.by the National Crime Agency. Ian Coulter was interviewed

:12:36. > :12:37.on Wednesday The agency is investigating

:12:38. > :12:40.the ?1 billion sale of Nama's It's looking into why Mr Coulter,

:12:41. > :12:48.whose company handled the sale, moved millions of pounds

:12:49. > :13:18.in fixers fees to an off-shore Is an environmental group says it is

:13:19. > :13:22.appalled at how much letter was found at a site protected by EU

:13:23. > :13:32.environment legislations. Nestled between mountains on the right,

:13:33. > :13:36.Carlingford Lough has EU protection. Along its edges the result is one

:13:37. > :13:41.important industry, shellfish, which provides jobs for this coastal

:13:42. > :13:42.community, but that is an unwanted by-product. These rubber

:13:43. > :13:45.community, but that is an unwanted used to lash oyster bags

:13:46. > :13:51.community, but that is an unwanted metal crystals on which they are

:13:52. > :13:56.grown. Thousands of them have been carelessly discarded and washed up

:13:57. > :14:01.along the short. Bag loads were picked up by an environmental group

:14:02. > :14:07.during a decent beach clean, but many more are still left on the

:14:08. > :14:13.shore. It will be a major operation to retrieve them all. The scale of

:14:14. > :14:13.the problem shocking the environmental group which organised

:14:14. > :14:29.the clean-up. We have done our best, two hours

:14:30. > :14:36.cleaning up and I ended up with a sceptical of like rubber bands.

:14:37. > :14:41.Before their licence shellfish farms usually have to provide a report

:14:42. > :14:44.that -- showing that their operation will not adversely affect the

:14:45. > :14:50.environment. Pictures were posted on social media including these

:14:51. > :14:53.shellfish sacks washing up on the opposite shore. The resulting

:14:54. > :15:03.publicity has led to a response from the farms promising to clean up

:15:04. > :15:09.their act. A statement from the industry representation stated that

:15:10. > :15:11.it was unacceptable and said the clean-up was under way and the

:15:12. > :15:16.remaining rubbish will be collected and disposed of properly in the

:15:17. > :15:19.coming weeks, also saying they will work with local producers to change

:15:20. > :15:28.operating practices so that it does not happen again. The environment

:15:29. > :15:33.group says it is delighted that the outcome. It says everybody has to

:15:34. > :15:40.work together for the good of the area, both those who enjoy it and

:15:41. > :15:42.those who rely on it for a living. And we apologise for the brief loss

:15:43. > :15:47.of sound in that report. Ahead of Remembrance Sunday,

:15:48. > :15:50.we're focusing on one of the most important but least-known

:15:51. > :15:53.military figures in World War Two - He was born in a farm house

:15:54. > :15:57.in the village of Ballycarry Andy West has been looking back

:15:58. > :16:11.on his extraordinary rise through Top ranking personalities in

:16:12. > :16:15.Britain's armed services assemble in the Dorchester Hotel in London,

:16:16. > :16:21.Admiral John Cunningham, General Sir James Steele. At the very height of

:16:22. > :16:27.his influence and reputation, a long way from this tiny schoolhouse. In

:16:28. > :16:30.his memoirs he recall sitting in this very room as a young boy

:16:31. > :16:37.staring through the window to the church opposite. I can just imagine

:16:38. > :16:40.him here in the school. I don't know exactly where he sat but he was

:16:41. > :16:47.certainly able to look at this window and watch what was going on.

:16:48. > :16:51.She certainly wasn't content just to sit and was interested in all

:16:52. > :16:55.around. His teachers could never have guessed that boy would go on to

:16:56. > :17:01.help plan the D-Day landings and command clinical strips the world

:17:02. > :17:12.over. He was small in stature but a big personality. It was only one

:17:13. > :17:17.year between his promotions. By 1939 the boy from Ballycarry had reached

:17:18. > :17:20.the Army's mobilisation unit where his signature would sign off one of

:17:21. > :17:28.the most significant documents and British military history. This is

:17:29. > :17:36.the order to mobilise all Army reserves to go to war. So in other

:17:37. > :17:42.words this is the signed document that said British forces and to war

:17:43. > :17:49.with Nazi Germany. You can see here is his signature and the date, 31st

:17:50. > :17:53.of August, 1939. That was the date British forces were told you are

:17:54. > :18:02.going in. Get ready. And the day after that my history lessons tell

:18:03. > :18:06.me that Germany invaded Poland. Having survived the First World War,

:18:07. > :18:12.he would have known exactly what was going to happen. General Sir James

:18:13. > :18:18.Steele died in 1975 in Dorset which had been his home for the number of

:18:19. > :18:24.years, but as this plaque states, when he died in 1975, his last wish

:18:25. > :18:26.was for his ashes to be interred in the village he never forgot and

:18:27. > :18:34.which will always cherish as memory. Yesterday, we showed this stunning

:18:35. > :18:36.autumnal photograph of a deer It was taken by a National Trust

:18:37. > :18:40.Ranger near Newtownbutler. Our south west reporter

:18:41. > :18:59.Julian Fowler has been there to see The 2000 acre estate on the shores

:19:00. > :19:06.of Lough Erne is a beautiful and tranquil place. It's ancient

:19:07. > :19:12.woodland and important conservation area, home to a wealth of wildlife

:19:13. > :19:17.in colluding fallow deer. Ottomans rutting season and the your swim

:19:18. > :19:22.across the water to look for mates. To see them and photographed them

:19:23. > :19:28.isn't easy, but Colin, a National Trust Ranger, was on the right place

:19:29. > :19:32.at the right time with his camera. We were travelling to one of our

:19:33. > :19:39.islands to check on some fence lines, make sure they are all

:19:40. > :19:44.intact, just turned around in the water and there he was, straight in

:19:45. > :19:49.front of us. All the lovely autumn colours and this majestic bot

:19:50. > :19:53.swimming in the water, and there was not a ripple. Have you seen anything

:19:54. > :19:58.like that before? I have seen it once before but now, at that time!

:19:59. > :20:04.That is not the only stunning image she has caught on camera. He took

:20:05. > :20:11.this photograph of a red squirrel. For a keen wildlife photographer

:20:12. > :20:12.this is the best place to work. Beautiful, right place at the right

:20:13. > :20:12.time. The Ulster rugby team are

:20:13. > :20:15.in search of an away win this weekend - here's Mark Sidebottom

:20:16. > :20:25.with our sports news. It is rutting season for Ulster

:20:26. > :20:27.Rugby! Sunday will officially usher

:20:28. > :20:29.in the Les Kiss era. For his first game in charge he

:20:30. > :20:31.and Ulster are on he objective is securing

:20:32. > :20:45.a first Pro12 win away Ulster's travels in the pro 12 so

:20:46. > :20:51.far this season, three losses out of three including their last trip to

:20:52. > :20:58.Wales. The conundrum is ending those awayday blues. You want to get the

:20:59. > :21:04.results every week. The hallmarks of really good teams are ones that can

:21:05. > :21:10.deliver under all circumstances. Once that can deliver consistently.

:21:11. > :21:14.I am not saying this isn't a consistent team but everyone would

:21:15. > :21:18.like it to be a little more consistent and that is a big

:21:19. > :21:24.challenge for us. The immediate challenge, the Dragons this Sunday,

:21:25. > :21:28.is a fierce one. The Dragons have been pretty phenomenal and haven't

:21:29. > :21:36.had a try scored against them at Rodney Parade so it'll be tough, but

:21:37. > :21:40.leading into the game with that being the way it would be nice to go

:21:41. > :21:46.on with the victory this weekend but we know we will have to be on our

:21:47. > :21:50.game. It is now time for Ulster to emulate their fine home form on the

:21:51. > :21:52.road. And the match live on BBC Two.

:21:53. > :21:55.Rory McIlroy has had a frustrating second day at the WGC

:21:56. > :21:58.In one of the highlights of his round, McIlroy came within

:21:59. > :22:01.inches of hitting a hole-in-one on the par three 12th hole.

:22:02. > :22:04.But his level-par 72 today leaves him at four under for

:22:05. > :22:08.the tournament some ten shots off the lead going into the weekend.

:22:09. > :22:13.Maybe he's not yet fully over the food poisoning.

:22:14. > :22:15.The Irish Football Association has confirmed this evening that approval

:22:16. > :22:17.has been granted for the complete rebuilding

:22:18. > :22:22.In March, structural problems were identified which meant

:22:23. > :22:30.The new stand, which will house 3,400 fans, will be

:22:31. > :22:38.And the cost will be covered by insurance.

:22:39. > :22:41.Kenny Shiels was last night confirmed as the new Derry City

:22:42. > :22:45.The former Kilmarnock boss has agreed a two-year deal

:22:46. > :22:53.and says hard work will be the key to operating on a tight budget.

:22:54. > :23:00.I want to try to get the team playing in a way that excites the

:23:01. > :23:04.people who pay their money to come and watch and I want the people of

:23:05. > :23:10.the community to have an affinity with the club and see it as a good

:23:11. > :23:14.place to go, so in order for it to be a good place to call, I have to

:23:15. > :23:18.put a product on the pitch that excites people and that is my first

:23:19. > :23:19.priority. Results along with that is the ultimate aim.

:23:20. > :23:23.The top two go toe to toe in the Danske Bank Premiership tomorrow

:23:24. > :23:26.There is one game tonight, bottom of the table Warrenpoint Town travel

:23:27. > :23:44.The team does well against to make up ground on the leaders.

:23:45. > :23:48.The team does well against but I am hoping we get a reaction

:23:49. > :23:52.from our boys. They know they should have done better. Hopefully

:23:53. > :23:56.from our boys. They know they should Friday night we can rectify that and

:23:57. > :23:58.hopefully get a good performance and three points.

:23:59. > :24:01.The Belfast Giants moved top of the Elite League last weekend -

:24:02. > :24:04.but that could change tomorrow night as the they travel to take on

:24:05. > :24:16.This is the goal that took the Belfast Giants to the top of the

:24:17. > :24:24.standings as the club's all-time leading scorer completed a

:24:25. > :24:27.hat-trick. I think we've got a good team this year and everyone is

:24:28. > :24:32.chipping in and you can see that. Different guys are scoring different

:24:33. > :24:35.nights and two when you need contributions from everybody and on

:24:36. > :24:40.Sunday it was me who managed to get some goals but it is a good job so

:24:41. > :24:44.far. This weekend is sure to be tough as the Giants visit the second

:24:45. > :24:49.placed Nottingham Panthers followed by a trip to Manchester. It is never

:24:50. > :24:54.an easy place to play any time of the year. We are just gone to have

:24:55. > :24:59.to play a little bit tighter and limit the power plays against them

:25:00. > :25:06.and hopefully we can bang a few goals and and Manchester has got a

:25:07. > :25:10.lot of offensive players and a high-scoring game again. Still a

:25:11. > :25:12.long way to go but with a quarter of the season to go it is so far so

:25:13. > :25:12.good. Finally this evening,

:25:13. > :25:14.confirmation of a story BBC Newsline Double All-Ireland winner

:25:15. > :25:17.Eamon Burns has been ratified On that note,

:25:18. > :25:20.the GAA's All-Star awards take place I predict a lean night

:25:21. > :25:41.for the Northern counties. The weather has been seesawing over

:25:42. > :25:46.the last couple of days and that is how it will continue. We had a dull

:25:47. > :25:49.and bump start but you can see clearer skies following through the

:25:50. > :25:54.course of the afternoon. It is a bright, clear the evening, still a

:25:55. > :26:00.little bit breezy and then overnight another batch of showers, maybe the

:26:01. > :26:03.odd shark one. Once they clear, the breeze is easing down and the

:26:04. > :26:08.temperature drops to 7 degrees. Through the weekend, quite

:26:09. > :26:11.changeable with some dry spells but the rain never too far away and it

:26:12. > :26:16.will become quite windy, particularly on Sunday, but the

:26:17. > :26:22.breeze coming from the South will be quite mild. Into tomorrow, we are

:26:23. > :26:28.doing it all again. More rain pushing in from the south, quite

:26:29. > :26:33.persistent across many areas. That rain could actually linger well into

:26:34. > :26:36.the afternoon before it clears away. Elsewhere, we will start to see an

:26:37. > :26:40.improvement in the afternoon with the triad and brighter weather

:26:41. > :26:45.following from the West, but not quite as mild. Tomorrow the

:26:46. > :26:52.temperature will be close to just above average, 10-11 . Light winds

:26:53. > :26:57.tomorrow and fairly clear skies and likely to be a chilly night with

:26:58. > :27:01.temperature down to five in the countryside and all change on Sunday

:27:02. > :27:06.once again. Southerly wind picking up bringing yet more rain. Some of

:27:07. > :27:10.it particularly heavy through the morning, timing showed early

:27:11. > :27:16.afternoon, with some bright spells and between and it is mild, but with

:27:17. > :27:23.the wind and showers, feeling that way. That is the second of two laws

:27:24. > :27:28.through this weekend as we are not out of that into next weekend.

:27:29. > :27:29.Plenty of isobars squeezing in with some blustery weather on the way and

:27:30. > :27:31.more rain attached as You can also keep in contact with
