:00:46. > :00:50.The gunmen opened fire with a heavy calibre weapon,

:00:51. > :00:52.hitting the unmarked vehicle a number of times.

:00:53. > :00:54.The two policemen sitting inside this vehicle were badly shaken up

:00:55. > :01:02.But for the armour plating in the vehicle and the bullet-proof glass,

:01:03. > :01:05.they would have been badly injured or killed.

:01:06. > :01:08.The police believe up to eight shots were fired at the car,

:01:09. > :01:10.and other bullets may have missed their intended target.

:01:11. > :01:12.It was significant weaponry to bring into what is

:01:13. > :01:23.Lots of housing, people trying to go about their normal business,

:01:24. > :01:28.children walking about the street.

:01:29. > :01:34.People here, they don't want this kind of action

:01:35. > :01:38.They have made that very clear, and they are calling

:01:39. > :01:41.on anybody who is involved in this type of thing to desist.

:01:42. > :01:43.Last night's attempted murder attack also drew condemnation from

:01:44. > :01:45.the First Minister and Deputy First Minister at today's

:01:46. > :01:46.British Irish Council meeting in London.

:01:47. > :01:49.If anybody is so mindless that they think that by going out

:01:50. > :01:52.and attempting to kill two policemen that they are going to

:01:53. > :01:55.change the course of the Executive and Assembly, they really are fools.

:01:56. > :01:57.We are absolutely determined, we have an agreement,

:01:58. > :02:00.I believe the whole of the community in Northern Ireland

:02:01. > :02:05.and we will not be dragged back by these people.

:02:06. > :02:07.A stolen black BMW car believed to have been used

:02:08. > :02:11.by the gunmen was found abandoned and set on fire at Cluain Mor Drive

:02:12. > :02:13.in the Springfield Road area of west Belfast.

:02:14. > :02:20.Police are blaming dissident republicans for the shooting.

:02:21. > :02:25.The police are treating as a hate crime an arson attack

:02:26. > :02:30.Their car was destroyed and the house damaged.

:02:31. > :02:32.Two children were inside, along with their mother

:02:33. > :02:44.Community solidarity for a young mother, the victim of a deliberate

:02:45. > :02:49.attack on her family car and her home. The woman and her two children

:02:50. > :02:52.were asleep upstairs when the attack happened at around six o'clock this

:02:53. > :02:58.morning. Shortly afterwards she spoke to me and described what

:02:59. > :03:03.happened. My girls were sleeping in this room, I was sleeping in that

:03:04. > :03:09.other room. I opened the door and started to scream when I saw the big

:03:10. > :03:16.fire. I screamed, and my goals didn't know why. They got up from

:03:17. > :03:20.bed and also started screaming. I really had a hard time with my

:03:21. > :03:27.girls. She didn't have her husband at her side - key is in India

:03:28. > :03:39.tending his father's funeral today. Grief in India compound did buy an

:03:40. > :03:42.attack you're in Ireland. There are about 60 Indian families in and

:03:43. > :03:48.around this area. They have been here for ten to 15 years, and most

:03:49. > :03:53.work in local hospitals. They are either doctors or nurses. It is not

:03:54. > :03:57.like we came for a few years. We came to live here. Our children are

:03:58. > :04:11.born here, they go to schools and universities. The neighbours were

:04:12. > :04:16.also stunned. Shocked, disgusted. Out working every day, doing nobody

:04:17. > :04:22.any harm. Why in a body would target them, I don't know. For most local

:04:23. > :04:25.children, this was a normal morning heading to school. For the two

:04:26. > :04:34.children in this one, they were still being comforted at a

:04:35. > :04:36.neighbour's coast. -- neighbour's house.

:04:37. > :04:38.The Royal Children's Hospital in Belfast has had to cancel all

:04:39. > :04:41.planned elective surgery because of a higher number of admissions.

:04:42. > :04:44.The Belfast Trust says 12 beds in intensive care are near capacity,

:04:45. > :04:46.and a theatre recovery unit is being converted to facilitate more beds.

:04:47. > :04:49.The pressure is being blamed on an increase in cases of bronchiolitis,

:04:50. > :04:51.a respiratory condition which can develop into a serious

:04:52. > :04:57.Elective surgery will be reviewed daily.

:04:58. > :05:01.A senior PSNI officer has settled an alleged discrimination case.

:05:02. > :05:04.Will Kerr applied to become Deputy Chief Constable last year,

:05:05. > :05:15.The board says the case been settled on mutually acceptable terms.

:05:16. > :05:19.And will not now proceed to a hearing next week.

:05:20. > :05:22.The police in Bangor say they need the help of the public

:05:23. > :05:25.to catch those who attacked a community worker with a hammer.

:05:26. > :05:27.The victim has thanked people who have supported him

:05:28. > :05:29.following the assault, which he believes may have involved the UDA.

:05:30. > :05:45.He is back at work and he is not backing down. Aaron McMahon and his

:05:46. > :05:48.family have been overwhelmed by support since Wednesday night's

:05:49. > :05:54.attack. He says he was targeted after criticising paramilitaries,

:05:55. > :06:05.but he won't stop his community work and he won't be leaving anger. It we

:06:06. > :06:17.can work, what does that tell the young people? Accept Euro rock?

:06:18. > :06:25.Who was behind this attack? I believe a member of the UDA. Muscles

:06:26. > :06:31.have been flexed the over flags and bonfires for some time. People have

:06:32. > :06:36.been coming into this community from an outside area, a faction of the

:06:37. > :06:45.UDA who have been trying to intimidate this community. Sam White

:06:46. > :06:51.works for a restorative Justice group. He has condemned Wednesday

:06:52. > :06:56.night's attack. The UDA are being blamed. What do you say? From

:06:57. > :07:01.speaking to individuals and community workers, this is

:07:02. > :07:06.completely untrue. That organisation had no part to play in that

:07:07. > :07:10.whatsoever. The other question being asked today was whether police and

:07:11. > :07:16.politicians could have done more to resolve the tension in the town. We

:07:17. > :07:24.have had numerous meetings with the council, the PSNI. I myself as an --

:07:25. > :07:32.have numerous e-mails trying to organise meetings. The police are

:07:33. > :07:37.out there daily, on the streets every day, we are patrolling this

:07:38. > :07:42.district. We are protecting the community, keeping people safe,

:07:43. > :07:46.bringing people to justice. Aaron McMahon says he has heard it all

:07:47. > :07:53.before, but he hopes by speaking out at this time more will be done.

:07:54. > :07:55.Rugby, and Ulster lost to Leinster in the Pro12 tonight

:07:56. > :07:59.in a gruelling match at the RDS in Dublin.

:08:00. > :08:01.The only try came from the home side,

:08:02. > :08:06.in the latter stages of the first half.

:08:07. > :08:07.Ulster kept battling and had possession

:08:08. > :08:10.for almost the last three minutes of the game

:08:11. > :08:17.in a search for the equalising score, but it was to no avail.

:08:18. > :08:20.Now, finally, onto the weather prospects

:08:21. > :08:32.Today's unsettled weather stays with us through the weekend. Double

:08:33. > :08:39.pressure continues to bring in busting wind and outbreaks of rain,

:08:40. > :08:42.especially on Saturday. Temperatures close to freezing. Some of the

:08:43. > :08:45.scattered showers tonight will be following athlete and snow,

:08:46. > :08:53.especially for high ground, maybe the touch for low-level areas but it

:08:54. > :08:56.will not lie. It stays quite cold. Gusty winds continuing to Britain.

:08:57. > :09:03.Outbreaks of rain from the morning, so we wet start to the weekend. It

:09:04. > :09:11.will last through most of the day. For West areas of Britain, cloudy,

:09:12. > :09:15.eastern areas better sunshine, but it will cloud over quickly. Cold

:09:16. > :09:20.feeling for many areas tomorrow with a westerly winds and outbreaks of

:09:21. > :09:23.rain. Northern Ireland looking at highs of setting, maybe 8 degrees.

:09:24. > :09:30.Factoring in the wind and rain, it will feel at you degrees colder than

:09:31. > :09:35.that. Sunday will be a better picture. It won't be completely dry.

:09:36. > :09:39.There will be outbreaks of rain, but perhaps glimmers of sunshine as

:09:40. > :09:47.well. Eight or 9 degrees are high on Sunday. Wind making it feel a bit

:09:48. > :09:52.colder out and about. Into next week and the beginning of December, no

:09:53. > :09:54.settled spell in the forecast just yet.

:09:55. > :09:56.And that's it from us until 5:50 tomorrow evening.

:09:57. > :10:00.In the meantime, you can keep up to date with news online

:10:01. > :10:04.From all of us here on BBC Newsline, goodnight and have a great weekend.
