:00:00. > :00:09.A female officer at Maghaberry Prison has been arrested over

:00:10. > :00:12.an alleged sexual affair with a convicted loyalist killer.

:00:13. > :00:15.The officer has also been suspended from duty, while it's understood

:00:16. > :00:18.the prisoner involved has been moved to an isolation unit

:00:19. > :00:32.This is the loyalist killer at the centre of an alleged sex scandal

:00:33. > :00:35.which has seen a female officer suspended and arrested. Robert Young

:00:36. > :00:41.is serving a life sentence with this brutal murder in 2003. Drug dealer

:00:42. > :00:47.Jim Johnston was shot outside his Crawfordsburn home. Jailing Young

:00:48. > :00:52.for a minimum of 22 years, the judge at the time said he had shown

:00:53. > :00:56.supreme indifference to both the murder and his conviction. He said

:00:57. > :01:02.Young, now 51, was guilty of a brutal, callous murder. Prison

:01:03. > :01:06.chiefs here at Maghaberry began to suspect that relationship was

:01:07. > :01:09.developing between officer and Young while both were working in the

:01:10. > :01:14.prison kitchens. It is understood the officer was arrested last week

:01:15. > :01:17.as she arrived for work. The authorities, however, have begun to

:01:18. > :01:22.suspect something was wrong much earlier. -- had begun. A decision

:01:23. > :01:26.was taken to lodge a covert intelligence gathering operation

:01:27. > :01:29.which eventually led to the police being cold in. The officer was

:01:30. > :01:35.arrested and questioned about a suspected sexual relationship with

:01:36. > :01:39.the prisoner. She has been released on police bail pending further

:01:40. > :01:43.investigations. She potentially faces a charge of gross misconduct

:01:44. > :01:58.in public office. In a statement, the Department of Justice said...

:01:59. > :02:04.Tonight, I understand Robert Young is being held in the jail's

:02:05. > :02:09.isolation unit as the authorities here try to establish if what was

:02:10. > :02:13.allegedly going on Gusev led to any breach of prison security. -- could

:02:14. > :02:15.have led. Almost 400 motorists were arrested

:02:16. > :02:17.over Christmas accused of drinking and driving - one of them

:02:18. > :02:19.was a police officer. The number of arrests

:02:20. > :02:43.amounted to a 40% increase In spite of all the TV adverts, in

:02:44. > :02:47.spite of all the police warning, the number of people drinking and

:02:48. > :02:53.driving is not going down. In fact, it is going up. Over Christmas and

:02:54. > :03:00.New Year, 396 people were arrested, 71 women, 325 men. That includes 1

:03:01. > :03:07.driver who was arrested twice within a few days, both on suspicion of

:03:08. > :03:11.drink-driving. The 396 total number of arrests is much higher than last

:03:12. > :03:17.year, a 40% increase. 1 of those arrested by the police was 1 of

:03:18. > :03:22.their own officers. So, what happens to police officers if they are found

:03:23. > :03:25.guilty of drinking and driving? A number of police officers have lost

:03:26. > :03:29.their jobs in recent times and those people can certainly expect to find

:03:30. > :03:34.themselves in front of a panel, 1 sanction available is the loss of

:03:35. > :03:41.your job. This is the latest TV ad. The police hope drivers now get the

:03:42. > :03:45.message. Everyone who has been drink-driving can expect to be taken

:03:46. > :03:48.to court and can expect not a Matic disqualification from driving, they

:03:49. > :03:51.will have to pass the driving test before being allowed back on road

:03:52. > :03:56.and they can expect huge insurance bills. That is in addition to the

:03:57. > :04:01.social embarrassment for being caught drinking and driving. So, who

:04:02. > :04:05.are the people being arrested? Statistics show they are from right

:04:06. > :04:09.across Northern Ireland and they are from all different ages, from

:04:10. > :04:15.teenagers to 1 driver arrested this Christmas who was aged 83. The

:04:16. > :04:16.holiday period may now be over, but the warnings and the testing will

:04:17. > :04:18.continue. The police have arrested a man

:04:19. > :04:20.they'd been searching for in connection with a serious

:04:21. > :04:23.assault on a woman in Newtownabbey. Officers had appealed

:04:24. > :04:26.for the 33-year-old man to contact them after the woman was critically

:04:27. > :04:28.injured in the attack The police released a photo of him

:04:29. > :04:34.and details of his car and had warned the public not

:04:35. > :04:38.to approach him. He was arrested on the Newtownards

:04:39. > :04:43.Road in Belfast this afternoon. There's been a verdict of accidental

:04:44. > :04:46.death recorded at the inquest in England into the death

:04:47. > :04:48.of Lord Ballyedmond, the Tory peer from Rostrevor,

:04:49. > :04:51.his foreman Declan Small They were killed in March 2014

:04:52. > :04:57.when the helicopter they were travelling in came down

:04:58. > :05:01.in dense fog in Norfolk. The 70-year-old founder

:05:02. > :05:03.of Norbrook Laboratories was one The inquest heard there

:05:04. > :05:08.were no mechanical faults with the helicopter,

:05:09. > :05:11.but that it would not have been allowed to take off

:05:12. > :05:14.from a licensed aerodrome in such The first real cold snap

:05:15. > :05:20.of the winter has caused problems Overnight snow falls and freezing

:05:21. > :05:25.conditions meant people living on higher ground and in more

:05:26. > :05:29.isolated areas were worst hit, particularly in County Tyrone

:05:30. > :05:43.and across the North West. Even they gritters were finding it

:05:44. > :05:47.difficult in the wintry conditions and this vehicle wasn't alone. As

:05:48. > :05:56.motorists on high ground and untreated roads struggled to cope.

:05:57. > :06:01.We started out from any club this morning, the main roads were fine.

:06:02. > :06:06.Some of the side roads and byways, there was quite a covering of snow

:06:07. > :06:11.and ice. They are at the treacherous. In Derry, gritters

:06:12. > :06:14.treating roads in Creggan had to be withdrawn for several hours

:06:15. > :06:20.overnight after they were attacked by stonethrowers. 10 past 10 last

:06:21. > :06:27.night, driver reported they had come under attack on the estate by youths

:06:28. > :06:31.throwing snowballs and stones. Policy is when that occurs, the

:06:32. > :06:35.driver is removed from that area for his own safety. Unfortunately,

:06:36. > :06:41.number of roads in that area were then left untreated. Life on the

:06:42. > :06:51.farm is on made harder by any cold snap. Giving livestock fed and

:06:52. > :06:56.watered is a priority. I didn't expect so much of it this morning.

:06:57. > :06:59.You cannot get the tractors out of the sheds and you can't get them to

:07:00. > :07:08.start because of the cold. It just makes everything take a wee while

:07:09. > :07:10.longer. Despite the weather, only 2 schools were forced to close across

:07:11. > :07:17.Northern Ireland, 1 in Tyrone and the other in the Glens of Antrim.

:07:18. > :07:22.Alternative methods of transport were being tried out. Elsewhere, the

:07:23. > :07:26.more conventional travellers were taking it easy. Concentrating on the

:07:27. > :07:32.road ahead of them. While others were taking the opportunity to grab

:07:33. > :07:37.some spectacular pictures with their aerial drones. It doesn't matter

:07:38. > :07:42.what colour your will is, it is all the same in this weather. And set to

:07:43. > :07:44.continue with the forecast warning of subzero temperatures, freezing

:07:45. > :07:47.fog and more ice on the way tonight. The former Prime Minister,

:07:48. > :07:50.Tony Blair, has refused to appear before the Northern Ireland Affairs

:07:51. > :07:53.Parliamentary Committee to answer questions on compensation

:07:54. > :07:57.for victims of IRA attacks, carried out with

:07:58. > :07:59.Libyan-supplied weapons. The DUP MP Gavin Robinson,

:08:00. > :08:02.who's a member of the committee, said the decision was a snub

:08:03. > :08:05.to IRA victims who were injured That was the news, now the weekend

:08:06. > :08:25.weather forecast with Geoff Maskell. Good evening. A very cold night

:08:26. > :08:28.tonight. In some rural areas, temperatures could be done as low as

:08:29. > :08:33.-7 and below freezing just about everywhere. A real risk of icy

:08:34. > :08:38.patches on the roads and some freezing fog. The Met Office has

:08:39. > :08:41.issued a severe weather warning for ice, which remains in place all the

:08:42. > :08:46.way through tonight and tomorrow morning. As we head into the

:08:47. > :08:53.weekend, it will be a cold start, break for some before skies over. It

:08:54. > :08:56.might take a while for the freezing fog to clear, especially across the

:08:57. > :09:01.East of Northern Ireland. A bit of a battle between the cloud cover

:09:02. > :09:04.moving in. It might see some bright spells for a time during the

:09:05. > :09:09.morning. There are still some very strong winds, particularly along the

:09:10. > :09:13.East coast of England. Where the skies are clearest, temperatures

:09:14. > :09:16.climbing around six Celsius. We will not see much in the way of

:09:17. > :09:21.brightness because we will get skies coding overhead of this front. That

:09:22. > :09:25.will mainly fall as rain, but the possibility of sleet or snow over

:09:26. > :09:28.high ground. The extra cloud cover means that temperatures tomorrow

:09:29. > :09:35.night will not be as cold as tonight. Sunday, we have high

:09:36. > :09:39.pressure over us, but in the main, it will trap some cloud over

:09:40. > :09:45.Northern Ireland, still temperatures might creep up again to around 6 or

:09:46. > :09:49.7. Milder than they have been. But not expecting much more in the way

:09:50. > :09:51.of snow. But I wouldn't put away the double duvet just yet.

:09:52. > :09:53.Our next BBC Newsline is at 5:50 tomorrow evening.

:09:54. > :09:58.From all of us here, goodnight and have a great weekend.
