:00:14. > :00:16.Good evening, the headlines on BBC Newsline: A woman's in court charged

:00:17. > :00:22.Martin McGuinness is to fight the coming election

:00:23. > :00:28.The man behind the loyalist flag protests says he no

:00:29. > :00:34.Also tonight: An emotional reunion for a young cancer survivor

:00:35. > :00:40.and the man who saved her life The beauty of a bird in flight -

:00:41. > :00:46.how the battle continues to save this special breed.

:00:47. > :00:50.Ulster must try and qualify for the knock out stages of Europe

:00:51. > :00:56.And a bright start to the weekend before rain later

:00:57. > :01:11.A 29-year-old woman has appeared in court charged with the murder

:01:12. > :01:16.The 67-year-old's body was found at his home in Greenisland

:01:17. > :01:30.The court heard that Eddie Girvan's murder on Monday and the police

:01:31. > :01:38.revealed they found his body by chance and it had had been stabbed.

:01:39. > :01:42.Today connection between his alleged murder and is addressed in Belfast's

:01:43. > :01:49.city centre. Margaret Henderson's address was given as this straight.

:01:50. > :01:52.The accused were used to some friends in the public gallery and

:01:53. > :01:56.when asked if she understood the charge, she replied, I. A barrister

:01:57. > :02:03.said Margaret Henderson is an extremely honourable lady, fragile

:02:04. > :02:07.and is susceptible to others. The lawyers said she would need

:02:08. > :02:10.immediate care in custody. During her brief appearance, the accused

:02:11. > :02:16.woman gestured a number of times towards friends in the court. As she

:02:17. > :02:19.left the dock, a man in the public gallery shouted support. Yet used

:02:20. > :02:31.was remanded in custody and will appear again next month.

:02:32. > :02:39.A 33-year-old man has been charged in relation to a murder on the 13th

:02:40. > :02:41.of the month. The man is also charged with other offences in

:02:42. > :02:46.relation to the incident. He is due in court tomorrow morning.

:02:47. > :02:48.While the Assembly election is four months away,

:02:49. > :02:51.one of its most intriguing contests is already taking shape.

:02:52. > :02:54.Sinn Fein sources say the deputy first minister Martin McGuinness

:02:55. > :02:59.is moving from Mid Ulster to his home constituency of Foyle.

:03:00. > :03:02.That will put him directly up against the new SDLP leader Colum

:03:03. > :03:06.Our political correspondent Gareth Gordon has spent the day

:03:07. > :03:09.in Londonderry assessing the possible impact.

:03:10. > :03:12.For more than 40 years, this city with its famous walls has

:03:13. > :03:16.Now the party 's defences are about to be tested

:03:17. > :03:26.I declared that Mike Magennis has been elected to serve in Parliament

:03:27. > :03:27.that the Mid Ulster constituency. For almost two decades,

:03:28. > :03:30.Martin McGuinness has been Now he is coming home

:03:31. > :03:34.and that is a major challenge for another Derry

:03:35. > :03:37.man, Colum Eastwood. He has just become the SDLP 's

:03:38. > :03:41.youngest leader and now he must In last year 's General Election,

:03:42. > :03:46.the SDLP comfortably held Foyle with almost 40% of

:03:47. > :03:48.the vote against Sinn But a better comparison may be

:03:49. > :03:53.the last assembly election when the SDLP's lead

:03:54. > :03:57.could hardly have been narrower, Mr McGuinness will make a major

:03:58. > :04:05.speech in the city tomorrow but the party hopes his introduction

:04:06. > :04:10.will be enough giving it is a huge The move was front-page

:04:11. > :04:14.news today, though opinion is divided

:04:15. > :04:25.over what may happen. I do believe Martin McGuinness will

:04:26. > :04:29.pull very well in his home city. I do believe he will help carry his

:04:30. > :04:37.two partners back into the assembly in May. This might be a reason for

:04:38. > :04:41.more unionists to come out and vote to bolster the SDLP. They maybe

:04:42. > :04:42.don't want to see the constituency falling into Sinn Fein hands.

:04:43. > :04:47.On the streets, reaction was largely positive.

:04:48. > :04:56.I don't know if he will do any good, but if he does, Fairplay. He is just

:04:57. > :05:00.a local politician back to where he started. Normally I am not Sinn Fein

:05:01. > :05:01.supporter but I think it's a good idea. He might get something done

:05:02. > :05:04.about this town. It is dreadful. But the SDLP has questioned

:05:05. > :05:13.Sinn Fein's motives. This is about trying to deliver a

:05:14. > :05:18.third seat for Sinn Fein. I haven't heard anything but this is about to

:05:19. > :05:24.deliver a more ordinary. It is the people of dairy who say that Sinn

:05:25. > :05:28.Fein, while being the biggest nationalist party in government,

:05:29. > :05:33.they had not delivered for Derry. The election campaign has not even

:05:34. > :05:35.officially begun but already it is clear that this city, which has

:05:36. > :05:37.known many battles in the past, is set for another big one.

:05:38. > :05:40.A new round of funding from the European Union worth around

:05:41. > :05:46.It'll go towards supporting peace and reconciliation, cross-border

:05:47. > :05:53.The announcement comes as the debate over the UK's future in the EU

:05:54. > :06:02.is heating up, ahead of a referendum which may come this year.

:06:03. > :06:05.It wasn't surprising that there was an international feel

:06:06. > :06:10.It was made at the Skainos Centre in east Belfast which was itself

:06:11. > :06:16.One is called Peace IV and is aimed at

:06:17. > :06:33.There's about 100 million towards shared education.

:06:34. > :06:36.But if the UK votes to leave the EU, this

:06:37. > :06:38.will be the last round of European funding.

:06:39. > :06:40.David Cameron is currently negotiating on the UK's relationship

:06:41. > :06:45.Then there will be a referendum asking people if the UK

:06:46. > :06:53.As things stand, the DUP would campaign to leave.

:06:54. > :06:59.We see the influence of Europe in the everyday lives of people and

:07:00. > :07:04.business, not in a positive way. Therefore we believe that

:07:05. > :07:07.fundamental reform was necessary. We have to say that we believe the

:07:08. > :07:10.Her as if he is not pitching high enough.

:07:11. > :07:16.He said the new money would leave a lasting legacy.

:07:17. > :07:22.So would he worry about losing EU funding?

:07:23. > :07:28.The money would stay in the exchequer, would stay in the

:07:29. > :07:30.financial arrangements as far as it is concerned and clearly that money

:07:31. > :07:32.would be used to benefit communities.

:07:33. > :07:33.The issue was discussed on last night's

:07:34. > :07:37.Sinn Fein think a British exit would have

:07:38. > :07:51.My concern would be the implications it would have the North of Ireland.

:07:52. > :07:52.I think it would have found indications for economic growth

:07:53. > :07:53.prosperity. Eurosceptic wing of

:07:54. > :08:10.the Conservative Party. Everyone has a choice. The choice is

:08:11. > :08:16.going to be massive. When you have had this case of how vital it is to

:08:17. > :08:19.stay in, it matters what you think this important thing is that the

:08:20. > :08:25.people of this country will get the right to vote in a referendum on our

:08:26. > :08:30.relationship with Europe. The interest of the people will be

:08:31. > :08:32.better served by Europe or not? We need to await the outcome of the

:08:33. > :08:33.negotiation. about the prospect of

:08:34. > :08:46.an EU without the UK. Because it will have a big impact on

:08:47. > :08:49.us in the Republic, we have a clear view as a government. We obviously

:08:50. > :08:54.want the United Kingdom to remain part of the United Kingdom --

:08:55. > :08:58.European Union. This debate is already one of the big political

:08:59. > :09:01.issues of our time and it will only become more intense. A referendum

:09:02. > :09:03.must be held by the end of next year. There is a chance it will come

:09:04. > :09:05.this summer. Coming up later in the programme,

:09:06. > :09:12.we meet the singer from west Belfast A loyalist who helped to organise

:09:13. > :09:26.flag protests at Belfast City Hall has said he no longer

:09:27. > :09:29.supports the demonstrations. Jamie Bryson has said it's time

:09:30. > :09:34.to use politics rather than street At the height of the flag protests,

:09:35. > :09:45.no one had a higher profile He insisted the protests

:09:46. > :09:55.would and should go on and on. But on BBC review Ulster 's

:09:56. > :10:11.Talkback programme today, We need to change our tactics, we

:10:12. > :10:15.need to think about the way forward. I am raised enough to say that.

:10:16. > :10:20.People will say, you told us to stand here until the flag was back

:10:21. > :10:24.up. I recognise that was a mistake and tactics have to change. I am

:10:25. > :10:29.brave enough to tell people the truth and I will come in for a lot

:10:30. > :10:35.of abuse from people within my own committee. He was right, as collars

:10:36. > :10:41.come in. I think you have stabbed us all in the back. You do all the talk

:10:42. > :10:45.but you won't do the walk. You sold everybody up the river. I think he

:10:46. > :10:51.needs credit for what he is trying to do. Do you not feel any guilt now

:10:52. > :10:56.that people have lost jobs for having criminal convictions? No

:10:57. > :11:02.guilt or any apologies to make to those people? I didn't drag anybody

:11:03. > :11:06.out or force anybody to protest. It did not belong to me. It would be

:11:07. > :11:11.easy for me to sit here today and say, let's keep protesting, but the

:11:12. > :11:17.longer you protest and as the numbers dwindle, you lose any

:11:18. > :11:21.beverage you have. It was back in 2012 but City Hall stopped flying

:11:22. > :11:24.the union flag every day. Three years on, there are still protests

:11:25. > :11:27.but they are very small. The issue remains controversial but it's not

:11:28. > :11:30.quite what it used to be. The two teenagers who died in a car

:11:31. > :11:34.crash in county Armagh yesterday were Andrew Gass and Mark Hutcheson

:11:35. > :11:38.from the Markethill area. The 17-year-olds were on their way

:11:39. > :11:41.to college when their car left They were the driver

:11:42. > :11:45.and front seat passenger. Another young man in the rear

:11:46. > :11:48.of the car survived A woman is in a critical condition

:11:49. > :11:54.in hospital after two car crash She was walking along

:11:55. > :11:58.the Dundrum Road, close to the entrance of Murlough Nature

:11:59. > :12:02.reserve, shortly before 8pm last night when she was hit by a car

:12:03. > :12:06.after it had been in collision The woman, who is in her 30s,

:12:07. > :12:11.was taken to the Royal Victoria It's understood the final report

:12:12. > :12:15.of the Republic's banking inquiry is strongly critical

:12:16. > :12:18.of the financial regulators. The banking sector had to be almost

:12:19. > :12:23.entirely nationalised in 2009 when a property crash coincided

:12:24. > :12:26.with a global downturn. RTE says the inquiry has concluded

:12:27. > :12:31.that the Financial Regulator and the Central Bank had sufficient

:12:32. > :12:35.powers to intervene to protect financial stability,

:12:36. > :12:42.but neither acted decisively. Our next story is a special reunion

:12:43. > :12:45.involving a young woman from Limavady and a doctor her

:12:46. > :12:49.family believe helped save her life At 18 months old, Amy Patterson's

:12:50. > :12:54.parents took her home from hospital But almost 20 years on,

:12:55. > :13:14.she's planning a bright future. It was an emotional reunion at the

:13:15. > :13:19.family home in Limavady this afternoon. Neurosurgeon Gerry

:13:20. > :13:27.O'Reilly meeting the girl he helped save when she was just 18 months

:13:28. > :13:31.old. Gorgeous! I did a good job! Amy Patterson was brought home from the

:13:32. > :13:35.Royal Victoria Hospital after being told she had H on her spinal cord.

:13:36. > :13:40.She had been left paralysed from the neck down and given no hope of

:13:41. > :13:47.survival. My husband always had more help than I have because I am a

:13:48. > :13:51.nurse and I thought, I have been told by professionals that that is

:13:52. > :13:55.it and I thought my daughter was to die. But Amy Bosman case was taken

:13:56. > :14:03.up by leading surgeons in Birmingham boss Mike doctors and among them,

:14:04. > :14:06.the Northern Ireland Doctor Who played a pivotal role in the 11 hour

:14:07. > :14:11.operation to re-moved the jaw. It's an amazing story and to see any

:14:12. > :14:18.today and watch it has achieved in life is unbelievable. To see a child

:14:19. > :14:23.with a difficult malignancy who was not expected to live, to do so well

:14:24. > :14:31.and to be here and for me to be here with her, it is surreal. The

:14:32. > :14:35.21-year-old is now studying linguist and is it joins town and hopes to

:14:36. > :14:38.teach special-needs children in the future. She says words cannot

:14:39. > :14:42.describe her gratitude. I cannot put into words what they have done for

:14:43. > :14:46.us, especially my parents because they went through it all. There are

:14:47. > :14:53.no words for it. It is scary to think that I was like that at one

:14:54. > :14:58.stage. I am just so lucky to be where I am today. The family paid

:14:59. > :15:02.tribute to Gerry O'Reilly and all his colleagues. A they will be

:15:03. > :15:04.forever grateful for what he has done for the family, giving their

:15:05. > :15:11.young daughter the gift of life. It's a crucial time for a key

:15:12. > :15:14.conservation project involving The Red Kite was reintroduced

:15:15. > :15:19.to County Down some years ago. As the birds prepare to mate

:15:20. > :15:23.and breed, volunteers are out identifying potential nest sites

:15:24. > :15:26.so that they can check for chicks This is Red Kite country,

:15:27. > :15:37.the drumlins of County Down, a perfect hunting ground

:15:38. > :15:40.for these majestic scavengers, soaring on the thermals

:15:41. > :15:44.to spot carrion in the fields Here are the people who keep watch

:15:45. > :15:51.on these protected birds of prey, monitoring the population

:15:52. > :15:55.and reporting back on the success of the programme to

:15:56. > :15:57.reintroduce the Red Kite which has been hunted

:15:58. > :16:16.to extinction here. We have a fabulous view of the

:16:17. > :16:18.moorings and the landscape and perfect Red Kite habitat.

:16:19. > :16:25.and it is important that nest sites are identified now so more work can

:16:26. > :16:37.The birds keep quite low in the trees. They don't want to show where

:16:38. > :16:42.they are nesting so it is difficult to keep an eye on them. Once we know

:16:43. > :16:43.where they are nesting, we can get somebody in to bring the birds so we

:16:44. > :16:46.can now how successful we have been. 80 Welsh birds were

:16:47. > :16:48.introduced to Northern Ireland over two years and some

:16:49. > :16:50.have successfully bred, But the programme has had setbacks,

:16:51. > :16:55.a number of birds have been poisoned, probably

:16:56. > :16:58.due to the mistaken belief For the volunteers who monitor

:16:59. > :17:16.the Red Kites, the work has become It depends on the day and on the

:17:17. > :17:22.weather. You could spend three hours Sunday but if the weather is good,

:17:23. > :17:28.it's nice to be out. One very cold November night, we had 21 flying

:17:29. > :17:29.over. It was like a festival of Red Kite. So many they could hardly come

:17:30. > :17:32.At So many they could hardly come them.

:17:33. > :17:36.the Red Kite roost together, partly for safety and partly

:17:37. > :17:38.to communicate information on hunting grounds.

:17:39. > :17:40.If you listen carefully, you can hear them mewing

:17:41. > :17:45.There is nothing that spooks a flock of passing starlings

:17:46. > :17:50.and prompts a sharp right turn out like three huge birds of prey

:17:51. > :17:57.Those starlings, it turns out, are on their

:17:58. > :17:59.way to their own winter roost at the foot of Slieve Croob.

:18:00. > :18:03.We caught up with them just in time to watch their nightly display

:18:04. > :18:08.Tens of thousands of birds in coordinated flight until,

:18:09. > :18:12.as if on command and in unison, they landed.

:18:13. > :18:23.This teenager is someone to take note of!

:18:24. > :18:27.Nadine Megaw is a hairdresser by day but it's her singing that's

:18:28. > :18:32.Our arts correspondent Robbie Meredith went

:18:33. > :18:35.to meet her at home in Belfast and be warned there's flash

:18:36. > :18:42.photography at the beginning of his report.

:18:43. > :18:51.He is the superstar singer Justin Bieber.

:18:52. > :18:56.Whereas she is a teenager from West Belfast but this week

:18:57. > :18:59.their worlds collided a little when Nadine Megaw put a video

:19:00. > :19:07.of herself singing his latest hit on Facebook.

:19:08. > :19:16.A friend had shared it on their Facebook page and then a big chat

:19:17. > :19:19.show from America got in contact with me and I did a Skype call with

:19:20. > :19:23.him. They wanted to find out more about myself and I sent him a couple

:19:24. > :19:26.of cover versions I had done. Along with a transatlantic interest,

:19:27. > :19:38.there's also been plenty You are studying to be a

:19:39. > :19:44.hairdresser, what is the reaction from people you work with? A client

:19:45. > :19:50.came in the other day and she said, had you been on Facebook, the wee

:19:51. > :19:56.girl from West Belfast was like I started laughing. I said, that is

:19:57. > :19:59.me! She sat up and said, I don't believe it!

:20:00. > :20:02.At the moment Nadine is singing around her work but for how

:20:03. > :20:14.I am going to do a few auditions this year so I am hoping that goes

:20:15. > :20:18.well and I just want to keep going until I get where I want to be.

:20:19. > :20:22.Duetting with Justin Bieber? Imagine! That would be crazy.

:20:23. > :20:25.Ulster's rugby players must try to qualify for the knock out

:20:26. > :20:29.stages of the European Champions Cup tomorrow without their star player.

:20:30. > :20:33.Stephen Watson is here - it's a tough task for them.

:20:34. > :20:38.South African Ruan Pienaar is out of the crucial European game

:20:39. > :20:40.with French side Oyannax at the Kingspan stadium.

:20:41. > :20:47.New Ireland captain, Rory Best starts

:20:48. > :20:52.Ulster need a bonus-point win to have any chance of qualifying -

:20:53. > :21:02.and probably two other teams to lose.

:21:03. > :21:13.Through the years, he has been asked's talismanic but tomorrow,

:21:14. > :21:19.they must qualify without him. Returning from injury to or Nick

:21:20. > :21:23.Williams and Darren Cave who is concentrating on matters on the

:21:24. > :21:26.pitch and not results elsewhere. It's important that we don't worry

:21:27. > :21:33.about who is doing what and I have always felt, you don't worry about

:21:34. > :21:39.what anyone else is doing. If we do get a bonus point, that might not be

:21:40. > :21:42.enough but if we don't get a bonus point or lose, we will definitely

:21:43. > :21:46.not be in the quarterfinal. The important thing is to make sure we

:21:47. > :21:49.are there. Unlike the first half performance against Oyannax a couple

:21:50. > :21:54.of weeks ago, the Ulsterman will have to stand up for a PET minutes

:21:55. > :22:01.tomorrow. They said if we are not on our game, they to pieces so it is

:22:02. > :22:09.good, it keeps us are tools. Anything less, we will not be alive

:22:10. > :22:10.in Europe on Monday. A bonus point, when and cross their fingers that

:22:11. > :22:12.other results go their way. Kris Meeke has made an impressive

:22:13. > :22:15.start to the season. He lies second in the Monte Carlo

:22:16. > :22:18.Rally after eight stages. The Dungannon driver

:22:19. > :22:22.had left the defending World Rally Champion Sebastien Ogier

:22:23. > :22:25.in his wake in the early stages, opening up a lead

:22:26. > :22:28.of over six seconds. But the Frenchman has since taken

:22:29. > :22:31.over in first place, with Meeke now second heading

:22:32. > :22:34.into the weekend with a strong The Bank of Ireland Dr McKenna Cup

:22:35. > :22:40.Final sees Mickey Harte's Tyrone They take on a Derry side

:22:41. > :22:47.that they will face at least two more times this year in other

:22:48. > :22:51.competitions. These two sides have already

:22:52. > :22:54.met in the competition in the competition's stages

:22:55. > :22:57.when four Derry goals were still were not enough to avoid

:22:58. > :23:00.defeat by a point to Tyrone. Now the fierce rivals meet again

:23:01. > :23:15.to battle for silverware. It's a real occasion when you play

:23:16. > :23:19.them, you really enjoy it because they are a formidable opponent. You

:23:20. > :23:23.are only going to get better after playing them. We take every game

:23:24. > :23:28.competitively. There are many who don't take the competition seriously

:23:29. > :23:34.as others but no body wants to go on the field to get beat so on

:23:35. > :23:37.Saturday, we want to make a positive impact. We want to make sure we come

:23:38. > :23:39.away with a victory and the cup. in the National League

:23:40. > :23:44.and Ulster Championship, are the two managers

:23:45. > :23:56.looking beyond this final? You want to win every game you can,

:23:57. > :24:01.that is the challenge. That is what I want to do, when every game I

:24:02. > :24:05.play. If I meet Derry on a number of occasions, I want to beat Derry. I

:24:06. > :24:10.am sure their manager is the same. That should make for a good final.

:24:11. > :24:14.If we are at this level and we want to play at the top level, we are

:24:15. > :24:20.going to play the two rooms and other teams as well. Tyrone are a

:24:21. > :24:22.benchmark for everyone. We are there or thereabouts and we hope to be in

:24:23. > :24:23.the contest. Throw in at the Athletic Grounds

:24:24. > :24:28.in Armagh is at seven tomorrow. Now - Rory McIlroy has been

:24:29. > :24:31.struggling to find his best form in the second round of the Abu Dhabi

:24:32. > :24:33.Championship. After a three hour delay

:24:34. > :24:36.because of fog, he was level par through eight holes before this

:24:37. > :24:38.errant drive at the ninth. He found the water and

:24:39. > :24:41.eventually dropped a shot. McIlroy is currently five under-par,

:24:42. > :24:45.five shots off the lead held The Belfast Giants are back

:24:46. > :24:53.in action tonight at the SSE Arena in the first of two games

:24:54. > :24:56.against the Coventry Blaze. After four straight losses

:24:57. > :25:11.in the League, they are hoping We had a good run and then we walked

:25:12. > :25:18.into the other teams and the speed caught us off guard. We couldn't get

:25:19. > :25:22.any traction to get points but now I think it was a good test and now we

:25:23. > :25:25.are going to Coventry to get some confidence. We have to take care of

:25:26. > :25:28.We have to take care of that first.

:25:29. > :25:34.lead in the Danskebank Irish Premiership tomorrow when they visit

:25:35. > :25:48.The weather is next. Not too bad day today. As we go

:25:49. > :25:52.through this evening we have some high pressure building and that

:25:53. > :25:54.should turn off those showers. High pressure at this time of year

:25:55. > :26:02.overnight normally means a frost but I think we avoid that tonight. What

:26:03. > :26:06.it owes to is set us up for a rather lovely start to the weekend. It

:26:07. > :26:09.should be dry and bright for most through Saturday morning but if

:26:10. > :26:12.you're planning a walk in the moorings or you have some outside

:26:13. > :26:16.jobs, I wouldn't hang onto long because there will be a change

:26:17. > :26:22.through the afternoon. For the rugby at Ravenhill, we should get away

:26:23. > :26:25.with a dry game there but by the time it gets to the football and

:26:26. > :26:32.those 3pm kick-offs, by the second half, most places will see some rain

:26:33. > :26:35.because that green is going to start pushing and will move slowly north

:26:36. > :26:39.and east as we go through the day and spreading into all parts.

:26:40. > :26:42.Reasonably mild with top temperatures of eight or 9 degrees.

:26:43. > :26:45.We keep that grey, many feel to the weather overnight another front

:26:46. > :26:51.coming through later on on Sunday night. While on Saturday we see some

:26:52. > :26:55.bright skies, a different picture on Sunday. A lot more cloud around but

:26:56. > :27:00.there is a little bit of compensation. While we keep that

:27:01. > :27:04.blanket of cloud through the day on Sunday, we are also drawing in some

:27:05. > :27:08.mild air from the south. If you can find some shelter from the breeze,

:27:09. > :27:14.you could well see temperatures of the team degrees, which is very mild

:27:15. > :27:17.for this time of year. As we head into the start of the next working

:27:18. > :27:23.week, you can see from the charge that strong winds are going to be a

:27:24. > :27:26.feature of the weather but before that, not a bad weekend. Some decent

:27:27. > :27:31.conditions to start the day on Saturday and then the compensation

:27:32. > :27:35.of some very mild weather indeed for this time of year. Enjoy it!
