:00:38. > :00:47.Our first report is from Keiron Tourish.

:00:48. > :00:50.Distressing scenes at the pier in Buncrana as relatives came to lay

:00:51. > :00:51.flowers for much loved family members.

:00:52. > :00:57.No one can quite fathom what has happened.

:00:58. > :00:59.It is believed in the family car got into difficulty

:01:00. > :01:02.on this algae which had gathered over the winter on the slipway.

:01:03. > :01:04.One eyewitness said the tragedy took just

:01:05. > :01:06.heartbreaking moments to unfold, as the car accidentally

:01:07. > :01:24.And it was in the water before we knew, and the Fire Brigade

:01:25. > :01:28.came in a flash, but they were just gone.

:01:29. > :01:30.The people were away, and we were all standing there.

:01:31. > :01:33.Another man watched in horror as the car was submerged

:01:34. > :01:35.and recalled the dramatic rescue of a baby girl,

:01:36. > :01:41.just four months old, by a passer-by.

:01:42. > :01:44.He was just out for a day trip, I think, with his partner.

:01:45. > :01:56.And he stripped off to his underwear and headed out.

:01:57. > :01:58.At great risk to himself, because the water

:01:59. > :02:01.was cold, and he came back in with the baby.

:02:02. > :02:04.If he had had his clothes on he would not have made it,

:02:05. > :02:07.He was totally exhausted when he came back.

:02:08. > :02:13.The Deputy First Minister today visited the scene.

:02:14. > :02:15.Earlier he had been to see the grief stricken

:02:16. > :02:17.family, and one women whose profound personal loss was incalculable.

:02:18. > :02:25.There are no words to sum up the heartbreak.

:02:26. > :02:27.I have just come from meeting with the young woman who has

:02:28. > :02:30.lost her partner, her two sons, her mother and her sister.

:02:31. > :02:35.A major emergency was declared last night,

:02:36. > :02:39.but nothing can prepare individuals for such a tragedy.

:02:40. > :02:44.You train for this, but nothing prepares you for it.

:02:45. > :02:48.A lot of our crew have young families.

:02:49. > :02:51.That was probably an experience, and there are a lot of things

:02:52. > :02:54.Amidst the tragedy, there was positive news

:02:55. > :02:58.on the four-month-old baby girl who was rescued.

:02:59. > :03:03.A bystander rescued a young baby, four-month-old baby,

:03:04. > :03:08.from the vehicle, and that baby is now in hospital doing very well.

:03:09. > :03:17.From a community united in sympathy and utter disbelief.

:03:18. > :03:20.A man who jumped into the water and rescued the four-month-old baby,

:03:21. > :03:21.Rioghnach-Ann, has been talking about what happened.

:03:22. > :03:31.I saw the car, and so we went down to help straightaway.

:03:32. > :03:35.So we got out of the car, and there was a guy there,

:03:36. > :03:44.And I was like, all right, I take my phone out,

:03:45. > :03:46.give it my girlfriend to ring the Coast Guard.

:03:47. > :03:49.I looked out and I could see the distress in the family,

:03:50. > :03:51.the father and mother and the two children,

:03:52. > :03:58.So I took off my clothes down to my boxers and just swam out

:03:59. > :04:09.And just when I got out there, the father had the window half ajar,

:04:10. > :04:13.and he started hitting it with his elbow to break it.

:04:14. > :04:14.I started shouting, please, everybody

:04:15. > :04:17.has to get out of the car, the car is going to go down,

:04:18. > :04:23.At the stage when the windows broke, the father sat on the ledge

:04:24. > :04:25.of the window and the water started to seep in.

:04:26. > :04:30.He then handed me the baby infant and said, take the baby.

:04:31. > :04:32.I took the baby, and said, someone else,

:04:33. > :04:45.He just looked at me and said, save my baby.

:04:46. > :04:52.I held it above my head and swam back to shore.

:04:53. > :04:59.It must have been awful to have to leave them behind,

:05:00. > :05:01.while at the same time you were saving a life.

:05:02. > :05:06.I was out there swimming, and I didn't know

:05:07. > :05:11.how I was going to help, what was going to happen.

:05:12. > :05:13.But the baby was handed to me, and what had happened,

:05:14. > :05:16.the father looked at me and he had to make a decision.

:05:17. > :05:19.He could have saved himself, because he was out of the car,

:05:20. > :05:33.I took the baby infant back to shore.

:05:34. > :05:34.My girlfriend was waiting at the shore,

:05:35. > :05:45.My girlfriend stripped the baby down, got her warm with the blankets

:05:46. > :05:57.You are entered, I see. I just had to the baby's life.

:05:58. > :06:06.You are entered, I see. I just had to get stitches on my feet. -- UART

:06:07. > :06:12.injuried. But apart from that I am fine. Just shaken.

:06:13. > :06:16.injuried. But apart from that I am just deal terrible I could not do

:06:17. > :06:21.any more for the family. It is just an awful tragedy. And seeing the

:06:22. > :06:26.actual Coast Guard and everybody work with the family. We were still

:06:27. > :06:31.on the pier as they were coming out, and seeing how hard the Coast Guard,

:06:32. > :06:36.everybody worked there. It was unbelievable. They spend so long

:06:37. > :06:42.trying to resuscitate the woman and bring them all back, but it was just

:06:43. > :06:58.so horrendous to watch it all. He was a good father. Yes, he was,

:06:59. > :07:02.certainly. The younger child was trying to get the back of him, and I

:07:03. > :07:07.think the father knew I was only going to be able to save one person,

:07:08. > :07:10.and he said to me, save the baby. And he went back and stayed with his

:07:11. > :07:12.family in the car and just disappeared.

:07:13. > :07:16.The grieving Daniels and McGrotty families said today they had been

:07:17. > :07:19.inundated with support from their local community

:07:20. > :07:21.and farther afield which they "deeply appreciated".

:07:22. > :07:24.Kevin Sharkey has spent the day in Derry.

:07:25. > :07:26.The Sunday afternoon drive to the seaside began here,

:07:27. > :07:34.The tragic end has left relatives heartbroken.

:07:35. > :07:41.Love for them two kids, love for his wife, his children.

:07:42. > :07:55.It has come as an unbelievable shock. We buried her sister eight

:07:56. > :07:59.months ago. And my mother died about two, three years ago as well. So we

:08:00. > :08:12.were all still basically in mourning for my sister, and this just has

:08:13. > :08:18.devastated the whole family. Totally in shock and dismay. I don't know

:08:19. > :08:30.how we are going to come back from this one. They just had a baby girl

:08:31. > :08:35.as well, and thank God she survived. I want to thank the man who saved

:08:36. > :08:37.her. I don't know your name, sir, but you are a hero in this family's

:08:38. > :08:39.eyes. The local priest has dealt with many

:08:40. > :08:41.tragedies in his parish Words fail me to describe the depth

:08:42. > :08:48.of feeling, the shock. Never in all my years of priesthood

:08:49. > :09:02.have I come across St Joseph's, St Eithnes's

:09:03. > :09:07.and St Mary's. Pupils arriving for class

:09:08. > :09:09.to the news that classmates At St Mary's, Jodie Lee Daniels

:09:10. > :09:15.was in third year. They are remembering her

:09:16. > :09:25.as a beautiful girl, a very bright girl

:09:26. > :09:29.with a bright future. For relatives today,

:09:30. > :09:30.there's been widespread community I was up with the family this

:09:31. > :09:35.morning, and to lose her two children and her husband

:09:36. > :09:38.and her mother and her sister in one All day the grieving

:09:39. > :09:45.relatives and their friends have been coming

:09:46. > :09:47.together for support. And they will come together again

:09:48. > :09:52.on Thursday for a joint funeral mass for the five

:09:53. > :10:00.victims at this church. A man was shot in front of children

:10:01. > :10:03.leaving a primary school The gun attack was in

:10:04. > :10:07.the Moyraverty area. The man's condition in hospital

:10:08. > :10:09.is described as stable. Gun violence comes

:10:10. > :10:13.to the school gates. The victim a father picking

:10:14. > :10:18.up his child in this car. Police knew him -

:10:19. > :10:22.he had a criminal record. His attackers also knew him,

:10:23. > :10:26.and they knew he was coming here. Well, it couldn't have

:10:27. > :10:28.been busier in this area It happened shortly after three

:10:29. > :10:33.o'clock as parents were arriving Men waiting in a car fired

:10:34. > :10:37.on the victim It's been roundly condemned

:10:38. > :10:50.by local representatives. There were a number of children in

:10:51. > :10:55.the area who witnessed that, and I have spoken to the family of some of

:10:56. > :11:01.those children, and they are still crying their eyes out. Absolute

:11:02. > :11:04.state of shock. Absolutely reprehensible, and no consideration

:11:05. > :11:08.or thought for the nightmares now that the young children are going to

:11:09. > :11:09.experience over the coming days and weeks.

:11:10. > :11:12.The staff at St Brendan's have been left to pick up the pieces.

:11:13. > :11:14.The school plans to open as normal tomorrow.

:11:15. > :11:16.But some of its youngest pupils have witnessed what no-one

:11:17. > :11:18.of any age should - a man with gunshot wounds

:11:19. > :11:22.The victim is now in a stable condition in hospital.

:11:23. > :11:25.Police want to hear from the many witnesses who were in the area

:11:26. > :11:30.They also want information on a black BMW

:11:31. > :11:33.they believe may have been used in the attack.

:11:34. > :11:41.It was found on fire a few miles away in the Kilwilkie Estate.

:11:42. > :11:44.The family of a homeless woman who died in a shop doorway

:11:45. > :11:48.at the weekend has described her as a person of compassion and joy

:11:49. > :11:51.who had battled addictions for years.

:11:52. > :11:56.Catherine Kenny was 32 and originally from Downpatrick.

:11:57. > :11:59.Her family say for the last 11 months she'd been living

:12:00. > :12:06.A charity says it was trying to find her a hostel

:12:07. > :12:18.It is incredibly heartbreaking she doesn't get the chance to come back.

:12:19. > :12:20.Even though she had addiction issues, she would have had a safe

:12:21. > :12:22.place with support and help. On tomorrow's BBC Newsline we ask

:12:23. > :12:25.if rules should be changed to allow gay couples better access

:12:26. > :12:27.to fertility treatment One couple share their story -

:12:28. > :12:31.that's on BBC Newsline tomorrow Barra Best has the latest

:12:32. > :12:41.weather forecast. The high pressure which is given us

:12:42. > :12:44.largely settled weather over the last week or so is just clinging on

:12:45. > :12:48.and will stay over the next day or so. But as we go through the week it

:12:49. > :12:53.gives way to low pressure systems, just in time for the Easter weekend,

:12:54. > :12:57.meaning it will be unsettled at times with windier conditions and

:12:58. > :13:01.rain on the way. Tonight largely cloudy, mainly dry. The cloud may

:13:02. > :13:01.rain on the way. Tonight largely taken off in one or two spots to

:13:02. > :13:08.give of taken off in one or two spots to

:13:09. > :13:13.for most dry. Tomorrow much taken off in one or two spots to

:13:14. > :13:13.around, perhaps with a few breaks and brighter

:13:14. > :13:19.around, perhaps with a few breaks there may be some thick enough

:13:20. > :13:23.patches to give of one or two spots of light rain or drizzle, but mostly

:13:24. > :13:27.dry day. There will be a lot of cloud right across Ireland to begin

:13:28. > :13:31.tomorrow. The best of the sunshine for many areas of Britain,

:13:32. > :13:35.especially eastern areas. Through the day the cloud. From the west.

:13:36. > :13:41.But said to stay dry, temperatures ranging from the high single figures

:13:42. > :13:47.to maybe even 12 or 13 degrees in the south-east Finland. -- of

:13:48. > :13:55.England. There will be sunny gaps coming through, winds staying late,

:13:56. > :13:58.nine, maybe 10 degrees. Then low-pressure moving in bringing wet

:13:59. > :14:02.weather, stronger winds as well. That will remain the course as we

:14:03. > :14:04.begin Thursday, Friday, Easter weekend. Some more unsettled weather

:14:05. > :14:05.on the way. Some of the country's

:14:06. > :14:11.best home cooks ..to compete

:14:12. > :14:17.for a life-changing title.
