:00:11. > :00:13.A vigil has been held in north Belfast for the father of four

:00:14. > :00:20.He died after being shot several times in the leg

:00:21. > :00:43.His widow told the gathering that the community needed to stay strong.

:00:44. > :00:47.Michael's children are too young to understand what the vigil was all

:00:48. > :00:52.about but his heart working wife thanked the hundreds who turned out

:00:53. > :00:55.to support them. We will all stay strong and stop these people,

:00:56. > :01:00.because we are stronger than them and they cannot beat us. It is not

:01:01. > :01:05.fair that the family should have to go through this. They are not judge

:01:06. > :01:08.and jury, I just pray to God and I hope there is watching over wherever

:01:09. > :01:15.we may go. They did in the arms of his wife

:01:16. > :01:20.when -- after being shot three times. The priest who organised the

:01:21. > :01:25.vigil had this message for the killers.

:01:26. > :01:31.The courage of Joanne will never be forgotten. Always be remembered.

:01:32. > :01:38.When the faceless perpetrators are long forgotten. Her act of love, as

:01:39. > :01:44.she cradled, comforted, and absorbed Michael, will always be a memory

:01:45. > :01:49.that sticks in our hearts and minds. I shop.

:01:50. > :02:00.At least we came out tonight to show our support, which was could.

:02:01. > :02:05.-- I am shocked. Amongst those gathered to make there

:02:06. > :02:06.is a sense of anger that a woman has been widowed and young children will

:02:07. > :02:10.grow up without a father. A 25 year old man shot

:02:11. > :02:13.in the legs in Londonderry last night is in a stable

:02:14. > :02:15.condition in hospital. It has emerged that he is

:02:16. > :02:17.facing drugs charges. His barrister told a court today

:02:18. > :02:20.that since the attack he had not Here's our North-west reporter

:02:21. > :02:30.Keiron Tourish. Forensic officers spent part of the

:02:31. > :02:34.morning following up after last night's shooting, a trail of that

:02:35. > :02:43.was still evident in the aftermath of the attack. It took place in a

:02:44. > :02:49.relatively new development in the Creggan estate. Harry Boyd was shot

:02:50. > :02:53.twice in the right leg. He was taken to hospital before being transferred

:02:54. > :02:59.to the Royal Victoria. One pensioner said the incident caused a great

:03:00. > :03:07.deal of upset. I did not know if it was up or down

:03:08. > :03:15.the street, the police came, and whatever. It is very traumatic, I am

:03:16. > :03:23.annoyed about it. The pain is real. Very upset.

:03:24. > :03:28.The parish priest said there was no justification for the attack which

:03:29. > :03:32.he cold barbaric in its nature. No humid being deserves to be

:03:33. > :03:40.treated like this. Every humid being has dignity. The dignity of this man

:03:41. > :03:46.was violated, and they violate their own dignity by doing it also.

:03:47. > :03:51.Locals said it had no place in society.

:03:52. > :03:56.Terrible shock. No necessity for it in this day and age. We are trying

:03:57. > :04:01.to move forward. It worries me for the grandchildren,

:04:02. > :04:05.that they have to grow up in this atmosphere.

:04:06. > :04:09.The district police commander said that while detectives were still

:04:10. > :04:13.investigating the motive the focus was on violent dissident

:04:14. > :04:17.republicans. It is reprehensible in this day and

:04:18. > :04:22.age that society would tolerate this brutal attack for some perceived

:04:23. > :04:24.misdemeanour. They have no legitimacy, they have no right to

:04:25. > :04:29.carry out attacks of this nature and members of the community.

:04:30. > :04:35.It emerged that a case involving the victim was due for a hearing today

:04:36. > :04:38.at the Magistrate Court, involving a number of alleged drugs offences.

:04:39. > :04:43.His barrister told the court that since the shooting he believed the

:04:44. > :04:45.victim had now regained consciousness. Detectives

:04:46. > :04:50.investigating have appealed for information from anybody who noticed

:04:51. > :04:54.any suspicious activity in or around this area, to get in touch.

:04:55. > :04:57.A man has been jailed for six months for shining a laser

:04:58. > :05:01.A judge told Alan Armstrong, from Greenisland, that his

:05:02. > :05:03.actions could have caused the aircraft to crash.

:05:04. > :05:20.The helicopter was sent into the night sky last September to provide

:05:21. > :05:24.aerial systems for a police operation tracking a stolen car, a

:05:25. > :05:29.green laser was shone directly at the helicopter, flying at 2500 feet.

:05:30. > :05:35.This is a separate example of a laser during street disorder in the

:05:36. > :05:38.past. In the night in question it happened at least five times and on

:05:39. > :05:42.one occasion was continuously aimed at the helicopter for about 30

:05:43. > :05:55.seconds. The court heard that caused the cockpit to be illuminated and

:05:56. > :06:01.the pilot could not see the instrument. The location from where

:06:02. > :06:05.the laser was Sean was identified as here, Alun Armstrong, a father of

:06:06. > :06:10.three, was arrested, and a laser pointer was found in his home. A

:06:11. > :06:13.defence barrister told the court that Armstrong did it because the

:06:14. > :06:17.helicopter was annoying him by flying over his house. Handing down

:06:18. > :06:22.a six-month sentence the judge said that actions which could have

:06:23. > :06:31.resulted in a pilot crashing in a heavily populated area were serious

:06:32. > :06:35.and warranted a prison sentence. That use of lasers on aircraft will

:06:36. > :06:40.be discussed on good morning Ulster tomorrow morning, that starts at

:06:41. > :06:43.6:30am. The Attorney General has asked

:06:44. > :06:45.the Public Prosecution Service to review its decision not

:06:46. > :06:47.to prosecute any police officers Colum Marks was killed

:06:48. > :06:54.in Downpatrick in 1991. It's claimed he wasn't carrying

:06:55. > :06:57.a gun when the RUC opened fire. His family wants an inquest

:06:58. > :07:00.and a full review of the circumstances

:07:01. > :07:04.surrounding his death. Smoke from a fire near the centre

:07:05. > :07:07.of Belfast could be seen It's believed tyres

:07:08. > :07:18.were on fire at a premises Belfast city council says it has

:07:19. > :07:24.been inundated with requests to deal with rats and that ratepayers

:07:25. > :07:25.are having to wait It is the only local council that

:07:26. > :07:32.offers the service free of charge. Last week our reporter David Maxwell

:07:33. > :07:35.visited a house in south Belfast where 18 rats were caught

:07:36. > :07:38.in just a few days. This week he's been out with

:07:39. > :07:59.the council's pest control team. Rats in a loft. Clever and

:08:00. > :08:05.adaptable. But they also carry disease. They will find their way in

:08:06. > :08:09.through the cavity. They carry disease. We don't want them there,

:08:10. > :08:15.we want them down in the sewers where they tend to live and we try

:08:16. > :08:20.to keep down the population. This is the front line, pest control

:08:21. > :08:25.officers using smoke bombs to test for damage to sewers that could

:08:26. > :08:31.allow rats to escape. They also put poison down where they find evidence

:08:32. > :08:36.of rats in the area. I am told this is a tell-tale sign that there are

:08:37. > :08:40.rats in the alleyway. The door has been chewed, that is rats trying to

:08:41. > :08:47.get into the property. This past year our complaints have gone up by

:08:48. > :08:52.about 200 from the previous year. It is nothing to do with anything, just

:08:53. > :08:57.mother nature. We had a mild winter, that would not have helped in

:08:58. > :09:02.controlling a rodent population. The council says that increased call

:09:03. > :09:05.outs are also down to changes in council boundaries. In urban areas

:09:06. > :09:10.rat populations are largely controlled by humans. And

:09:11. > :09:14.environmental factors. But without these controls it would be possible

:09:15. > :09:19.for a single pair of rats today to increase to a population of 100

:09:20. > :09:26.within four months. 1000, within eight months. Within a year, you

:09:27. > :09:31.could have a population of 2000. In short, they are survivors.

:09:32. > :09:36.They have an ability to learn quickly. They are very wary about

:09:37. > :09:42.taking bait. Only a proportion of their population take poison bait.

:09:43. > :09:47.One thing they will not avoid is the plentiful waste food discarded on

:09:48. > :09:49.the street. The council says residents also have a role to play

:09:50. > :09:53.in reducing numbers. Turning to sport now

:09:54. > :09:55.and Crusaders have won the Danskebank Premiership title,

:09:56. > :09:57.after a 3-1 win The Seaview club knew

:09:58. > :10:03.going into tonight, three points would wrap up the championship

:10:04. > :10:18.and they didn't disappoint. There is something Crusaders had

:10:19. > :10:21.never achieved until tonight, retaining the Irish premiership.

:10:22. > :10:25.They have been the best team all season and it was reflected at the

:10:26. > :10:30.home of their neighbours. From start to finish tonight they were the

:10:31. > :10:38.better team. In the first half, a sigh of relief from their supporters

:10:39. > :10:43.as Gavin White made it 1-0. Stephen Baxter's team continued their

:10:44. > :10:52.dominance after the break, Paul he Paul Heatley evading the defence,

:10:53. > :10:57.Crusaders injuring land, and it was the same for the supporters.

:10:58. > :11:03.Following that he was again put through on goal and scored his

:11:04. > :11:07.second, Crusaders third, and despite a consolation goal, the night

:11:08. > :11:14.belonged to the champions. Unbelievable. I'm speechless.

:11:15. > :11:21.Something I have wanted to do since I was a boy. It is absolutely

:11:22. > :11:22.fantastic. Overall we were the better team. And the best team of

:11:23. > :11:24.the season. The UFC World Champion

:11:25. > :11:26.Conor McGregor shocked and confused his many fans tonight

:11:27. > :11:29.with a message on social The Dubliner posted "I have decided

:11:30. > :11:35.to retire young." It's unclear if the fighter,

:11:36. > :11:37.who is renowned as a showman, is serious

:11:38. > :11:40.about the statement. McGregor was unbeaten in the UFC

:11:41. > :12:01.until earlier this year It ended up a pretty splendid day

:12:02. > :12:04.for many, particularly through the afternoon as the cloud cleared away

:12:05. > :12:10.from the West. With clearing skies it means it will be a cold night

:12:11. > :12:16.tonight. Even towns dropping to three Celsius. We expect some frost

:12:17. > :12:20.around tomorrow morning, the odd patch of mist and fog as well.

:12:21. > :12:26.Essentially it is a fine and dry day coming up. Where there was cloud

:12:27. > :12:30.today you will see more sunshine tomorrow. Despite a chilly start it

:12:31. > :12:35.will be crisp, lovely morning spring sunshine. We will see dry and sunny

:12:36. > :12:40.weather across much of Britain and Ireland tomorrow. The exception is

:12:41. > :12:47.part of northern and western Scotland. A few showers, quite easy

:12:48. > :12:51.towards the south-west, temperatures inland are decent, his temperatures

:12:52. > :12:58.through central England and what parts of Wales, 15, 16 Celsius.

:12:59. > :13:04.Northern Ireland, in the afternoon, Fairweather cloud, staying dry with

:13:05. > :13:10.decent spells of sunshine. Maybe cool on the coast where the breeze

:13:11. > :13:15.comes in from the sea. Inland we could see highs of 15 Celsius in the

:13:16. > :13:21.West or Southwest. High pressure still in charge through the rest of

:13:22. > :13:25.the week. Later we bring in cold air from the north, it will turn chilly

:13:26. > :13:29.from Friday and into the weekend, until then, fairly decent.
