:00:00. > :00:00.would ignore the clues of the last few days. That's all from the BBC

:00:00. > :00:17.News at 6. A strong showing for the DUP

:00:18. > :00:22.who could possibly take 40 seats while Sinn Fein appears

:00:23. > :00:28.to be holding its own. UUP predictions of gains have yet

:00:29. > :00:31.to materialise and the SDLP may struggle to keep its place

:00:32. > :00:38.at the Executive table. People Before Profit's Gerry Carroll

:00:39. > :00:41.tops the poll in west Belfast, while the Green Party looks

:00:42. > :00:44.on course to gain a seat It's bad news for the independent

:00:45. > :00:49.John McCallister. The DUP has put in a very strong

:00:50. > :01:02.performance in this Assembly election and may increase the number

:01:03. > :01:06.of seats it holds. Sinn Fein are set to

:01:07. > :01:08.retain their position While the Ulster Unionist leader

:01:09. > :01:16.Mike Nesbitt topped the poll in his constituency,

:01:17. > :01:17.predicted gains by his party And it's looking like a bad day

:01:18. > :01:22.for the SDLP which may struggle Let's have a look at how the numbers

:01:23. > :01:34.stack up this evening. With the health warning that it is

:01:35. > :01:39.early days, a pattern is already emerging. That is have a look at

:01:40. > :01:44.this pattern, this trend in our virtual storm chamber here in the

:01:45. > :01:49.BBC studio. Who has got what so far? Out of the 25 seats that have been

:01:50. > :01:54.filled. The DUP, here they come, all 13 of them. All elected so far, and

:01:55. > :01:58.the DUP are very confident of telling this bench, getting right

:01:59. > :02:04.down here to around the 38 or even 40 mark. They got 38 last time under

:02:05. > :02:09.Peter Robinson. Can Arlene Foster do any better? We will wait to see.

:02:10. > :02:13.Let's look at the other site Sinn Fein and Martin McGuinness can have

:02:14. > :02:18.begot on? They have eight seats at this stage. Martin McGuinness, looks

:02:19. > :02:21.on course to be Deputy First Minister but First Minister as far

:02:22. > :02:30.as we can see is that with out of his reach. We want to get right down

:02:31. > :02:35.to 30 seats, here, the Magic number that gives them a veto, the petition

:02:36. > :02:39.of concern. Back to the unionist benches, and Unionist Mike Nesbitt

:02:40. > :02:44.hoping for big increases. There is Mike himself, a virtual mike: he got

:02:45. > :02:48.in in Strangford, but nobody else there yet. A lot of work for them to

:02:49. > :02:58.do at this early stage. A similar situation over the for the SDLP.

:02:59. > :03:03.Only one SDLP MLA voted so far. Very alone over there. And why is this

:03:04. > :03:05.really matters will store them, if they are struggling and that seems

:03:06. > :03:09.to be the turn at the moment, if they don't get at least 11 seed said

:03:10. > :03:15.they may not even get a ministry. Bad news for them. But as I say it

:03:16. > :03:18.is early days, early days for the Alliance party at the back of the

:03:19. > :03:28.chamber, and how many have they got? Just the one MLA. A virtual Miami

:03:29. > :03:33.loan in east Belfast. She has a little bit of company, Gerry

:03:34. > :03:37.Carroll. People before profits topping the poll for west Belfast,

:03:38. > :03:43.who would believe it. If you look at the little scores on the doors up

:03:44. > :03:48.there, 25 seats. A long way to go but we have a pattern, a trend. We

:03:49. > :03:52.can see roughly what is happening, and will this trend continued to and

:03:53. > :03:56.tomorrow as the votes are counted but amok we will wait and see.

:03:57. > :04:02.Needless at the moment that Martin McGuinness is on course to be

:04:03. > :04:03.rebooted as Deputy First Minister and Arlene Foster the new re-elected

:04:04. > :04:05.First Minister. Our political correspondent

:04:06. > :04:06.Stephen Walker examines how the first day of counting has

:04:07. > :04:14.unfolded. It's the day when our politicians

:04:15. > :04:18.find themselves in the big picture. When the assembly reconvenes there

:04:19. > :04:23.will be some familiar names, but also some new ones. So, the first

:04:24. > :04:28.day of counting has produced a number of fresh faces who will sit

:04:29. > :04:31.on the Stormont. To some observers, the election campaign was dull and

:04:32. > :04:36.an interesting, but today, at the count centres, the full emotional

:04:37. > :04:42.success and failure was on public display. Gerry Carroll of People

:04:43. > :04:47.Before Profit pulled a staggering 8000 votes in west Belfast and one

:04:48. > :04:52.of the first to be elected today both of today by the result is

:04:53. > :04:59.testament that people are after fresh candidates. We are seeing a

:05:00. > :05:03.rise of Bernie Sanders, in the US, the rise of Jeremy Corbyn in

:05:04. > :05:09.Britain, and people want a change. People in west Belfast are looking

:05:10. > :05:13.for a political alternative, and that is what today's result

:05:14. > :05:19.represents. Another new face at Stormont will be Joanne bunting of

:05:20. > :05:24.the DUP. She topped the poll in east Belfast. It still seems surreal. I

:05:25. > :05:28.am still trying to dig it in, it has been a long number of weeks, we are

:05:29. > :05:32.all very tired and all going on adrenaline, but I'm still try to

:05:33. > :05:45.absorb it to be honest. Very thrilled. Are you excited about what

:05:46. > :05:50.happens next quiz science --? Yes east Belfast has a new MLA at a

:05:51. > :05:54.familiar face, paternity Stormont after a six-year bid. I am looking

:05:55. > :05:58.forward to Monday. I'm looking forward to starting the work that we

:05:59. > :06:02.have committed to do over the course of the campaign begins today is

:06:03. > :06:06.about the politicians and about the election, but Monday is about hard

:06:07. > :06:12.work of governing Northern Ireland following extra ideas and that is

:06:13. > :06:21.what we need to focus on. -- for the next five years. All the DUP, Arlene

:06:22. > :06:27.Foster topped the poll. A tough day for the Ulster Unionists. Mike

:06:28. > :06:29.Nesbitt topped the polls in Strangford, but predicted how many

:06:30. > :06:37.seats his party would win beforehand. You promised, saying

:06:38. > :06:44.that you would open the envelope with us. Are you up for that? I may

:06:45. > :06:48.have been ambitious. I'm still up for it but I may have been

:06:49. > :06:56.ambitious. Is that going to be tonight, Mike or tomorrow? I think

:06:57. > :07:00.tomorrow. I'm going to stay here for the rest of the count here today and

:07:01. > :07:07.as soon as the result is declared here, tomorrow, I will come up to

:07:08. > :07:13.the BBC, as long as the rugby is not on. If the DUP were feeling

:07:14. > :07:18.disappointment, the SDLP are feeling the same was that they are battling

:07:19. > :07:24.in upper barn and south Belfast. In foiled a space a strong challenge

:07:25. > :07:29.from Sinn Fein but by the lenient -- party leader Colum Eastwood within a

:07:30. > :07:34.defined mood. We are under huge pressure with Martin McGuinness

:07:35. > :07:39.they're coming back. The deputy minister, large profile stop we will

:07:40. > :07:48.see how that shakes out. For smaller parties can and independents, it was

:07:49. > :07:53.a tough day. Deputy leader Clare Bayley has performed well in south

:07:54. > :07:57.Belfast. In Southdown, independent John McAllister lost his seat where

:07:58. > :08:05.the DUP's Jim Wells was returned. In foil, People Before Profit pulled

:08:06. > :08:11.well. In North Antrim, UUP leader had hoped to bring in a running mate

:08:12. > :08:19.but that looks unlikely. I am kiss about no change in North Antrim,

:08:20. > :08:26.likely to be as we were. I am gratified yet disappointed that we

:08:27. > :08:30.haven't grown, although we are substantially from the percentage of

:08:31. > :08:33.last time. Deep first day of counting has produced a series of

:08:34. > :08:45.new faces, but it is two morrow that the full picture of the election

:08:46. > :08:53.2016 finally emerges. Sinn Fein say they are hopeful they can win more

:08:54. > :08:57.than 30 seats. It is certainly within our ambit, we can certainly

:08:58. > :09:02.do it. It is a PR election, and with PR elections, it is difficult to

:09:03. > :09:07.predict in the early stage. The interesting area is west Belfast,

:09:08. > :09:15.Derry come and we have three in on the roster already, so those are the

:09:16. > :09:20.areas. Upper barn as well. Two candidates done well there. Let's

:09:21. > :09:24.see how it goes full stop throughout the evening.

:09:25. > :09:26.The votes cast in the 18 constituencies are being counted

:09:27. > :09:28.in nine count centres across Northern Ireland.

:09:29. > :09:31.First Belfast counts with Tara Mills.

:09:32. > :09:37.Thank you. The four Belfast constituencies are being counted

:09:38. > :09:43.here and I am joined by two fresh faces to the assembly, one who is

:09:44. > :09:48.inevitably going to get there, it's fair to say. What do you think you

:09:49. > :09:54.will bring to the assembly but amok I think I will bring, as you say, a

:09:55. > :09:58.new voice, different conversations, change happening in Stormont. I

:09:59. > :10:02.think for a long time we have seen a bit of a stalemate and the growth

:10:03. > :10:07.may be of a political institution and political parties and settling

:10:08. > :10:13.themselves. I want to start to focus minds on rebels ending people and

:10:14. > :10:22.beware -- representing people and the majority. Gerry, what do you put

:10:23. > :10:26.your success down to? I put it down to a couple of things was the hard

:10:27. > :10:32.work on the ground, on the ground campaigning all year round, we stood

:10:33. > :10:36.in three elections, over the last two years and every single team we

:10:37. > :10:42.have fought. A commendation of hard work on the ground and also people's

:10:43. > :10:47.out of -- aspirations for politics. People are fed up with the status

:10:48. > :10:52.quo in Stormont and they want an alternative vision based on people,

:10:53. > :10:58.based on standing up against the corporations tax cuts, benefit cuts,

:10:59. > :11:03.and cuts to public services. I represent all of that and a fresh

:11:04. > :11:08.face for politics. Is it a republican vote or is a Socialist

:11:09. > :11:11.vote you got, is that the appeal? I am a socialist, and I think our

:11:12. > :11:19.votes come from all across Wells Belfast. There is working class

:11:20. > :11:25.discontent in west Belfast, fed up with experiencing high levels of

:11:26. > :11:29.poverty, at the same time the people of being north valid leasing lots of

:11:30. > :11:34.wealth. -- experiencing lots of wealth. Working class people and

:11:35. > :11:42.working class discontent have helped, and we will see what happens

:11:43. > :11:45.over the next few years. Clare, obviously do you have taken the seat

:11:46. > :11:50.for the first time. You are online to take the seat for the first time

:11:51. > :11:54.for the Green party. Where have you got these words from, the south

:11:55. > :11:58.Belfast hasn't had an MLA Green party before? The same as Jerry, it

:11:59. > :12:03.is hard work and determination. Proving your integrity with the

:12:04. > :12:07.voters, I don't think that my voters really come from a particular party

:12:08. > :12:12.or an area, I think my vote is really coming from people who are

:12:13. > :12:20.tired of identity politics, people looking for something else, passage

:12:21. > :12:25.is coming loud and clear. They aren't voting for somebody they

:12:26. > :12:32.don't like, to keep somebody out, and they are starting to focus on

:12:33. > :12:37.policy. They once delivery and performance and art record over the

:12:38. > :12:43.past five years, showing what one MLA can effect change. That is where

:12:44. > :12:49.the vote is coming from. Jerry, you are obviously a counsellor as

:12:50. > :12:57.worthy. You won't be double jobbing. No, we will be nominating somebody.

:12:58. > :13:02.I will be focusing on being an MLA, putting up a socialist voice in the

:13:03. > :13:14.assembly. We have just heard that the Sinn Fein seat as lost in west

:13:15. > :13:17.Belfast. Here at the foil arena, the count is continuing for is

:13:18. > :13:21.Londonderry and foil. We have had a result in the last half hour, after

:13:22. > :13:27.about nine hours of counting. The DUP Maurice Bradley has been elected

:13:28. > :13:32.in East Londonderry. He has a lots of experience in local government, a

:13:33. > :13:42.councillor in cold name for 19 years and served as Maher of Coleraine for

:13:43. > :13:46.two terms. He says he will be used to the pressures of Stormont because

:13:47. > :13:50.as a production manager of a local newspaper he is used to meeting

:13:51. > :13:55.deadlines. In the last few months, George Robertson has been re-elected

:13:56. > :14:00.under the DUP ticket. He will join him in Stormont. They hope to take

:14:01. > :14:07.three seats, the DUP in East Londonderry. In the camp old

:14:08. > :14:14.particularly well for conservatives. He and his wife arrived here

:14:15. > :14:18.recently, in a buoyant mood. They have has lots of photos taken of

:14:19. > :14:23.him. They went inside the hall to take a check on his progress. Martin

:14:24. > :14:27.McGuinness has arrived in the past few moments, republican sources

:14:28. > :14:36.don't think they will take the third seat in foil, but again that caveat,

:14:37. > :14:39.it is early days yet. Here in Ballymena, the Ulster count is

:14:40. > :14:50.coming down to a fascinating count for the final. Patsy McGlone of the

:14:51. > :15:02.SDLP, but the finals to seats of the constituency are a battle between

:15:03. > :15:08.Ian McRae and DUP. His father was a MLA for 13 years this could be an

:15:09. > :15:14.end to his dynasty. Similar to an jungle we have nobody elected yet,

:15:15. > :15:19.Mervyn Storey, and the TUV are almost certain to be in. A battle

:15:20. > :15:25.between Robin is one of the UUP and Philip Logan and the DUP. A

:15:26. > :15:34.fascinating battle to come here in Ballymena. In Armagh here, we have

:15:35. > :15:42.three elected. The DUP stop Sinn Fein got Megan, 11 votes over the

:15:43. > :15:48.greater. There other candidate five votes over the crater. They are sure

:15:49. > :15:52.to be elected. Danny Kennedy will also be in the man then really it is

:15:53. > :15:57.down to who will take the last seat, the SDLP seat. At the moment Justin

:15:58. > :16:04.McNulty is in pole position to take that seat for his party. In upper

:16:05. > :16:08.barn we have another elected just in the past few moments, UUP are

:16:09. > :16:17.predicting they will hold two with Jo-Anne Dobson, and to Sinn Fein

:16:18. > :16:23.candidates to. They will fight for the last two seats. Difficult

:16:24. > :16:32.accounts to be done here, seven more stages perhaps before we know how

:16:33. > :16:34.that plays out. And I'm in banger where the straightforward in North

:16:35. > :16:38.Down constituencies are being counted. For elected, two in each

:16:39. > :16:42.constituency. The Strangford candidates are very high profile,

:16:43. > :16:46.three DUP ministers standing here, thus the Ulster Unionist leader Mike

:16:47. > :16:51.Nesbitt, who said he was stunned to have topped the poll here ahead of

:16:52. > :16:59.somebody having the honour in the past. Ulster Unionists Philip Smith

:17:00. > :17:08.looks to be in danger. There is a changing situation in the 15 years

:17:09. > :17:13.and for an MLA seat for Joe Boyle. He is not ruling out winning this

:17:14. > :17:23.time. Kenny Armstrong seems strong. She bids for Kieren McCarthy's seat.

:17:24. > :17:28.The status quo regards numbers. A sterling performance, one and a half

:17:29. > :17:38.times the crater, very emotional about that result. Gordon Dunn came

:17:39. > :17:41.in after that. There's one thing uniting all the candidates here in

:17:42. > :17:47.Lisburn and it's this, this count is taking far too long for their

:17:48. > :17:50.liking. Just one MLA elected in Southdown, Jim Wells as we heard,

:17:51. > :18:01.and is just one in Lagan Valley, Paul given who topped the poll for

:18:02. > :18:05.the DUP, taking the crown. Lagan Valley constituency, the DUP

:18:06. > :18:10.stronghold, with four MLAs, but the party and the Ulster Unionists are

:18:11. > :18:14.still both saying that the DUP could reduce their seat quota here with

:18:15. > :18:20.just three, with potentially Jonathan Craig just losing out,

:18:21. > :18:29.meaning Paul given, Edwin Poots, and another. That will become clearer in

:18:30. > :18:36.the hours ahead. We have had a Unionist casualties in Southdown,

:18:37. > :18:40.the independent John McAllister 's. Harold McCabe will take that. Good

:18:41. > :18:47.use for the Ulster Unionists in Southdown. They are hopeful of two

:18:48. > :18:50.seats in Lagan Valley. That would be good progress for the Ulster

:18:51. > :18:54.Unionists where they have high hopes for whistle-blower and councillor

:18:55. > :19:03.Jenny Palmer who of course left the DUP amid acrimony and joined the

:19:04. > :19:05.UUP. Here at Valley leisure Centre in News on Abbey, votes are counted

:19:06. > :19:09.for the South Antrim constituency and for the DUP Paul Gervin and Pam

:19:10. > :19:13.Cameron just in the last few moments elected. A surprising name amongst

:19:14. > :19:18.the several eliminations in this constituency, the UUP's Adriaan

:19:19. > :19:28.Cochrane Watson. He had been co-opted into the assembling after

:19:29. > :19:32.Danny can head become an MP. -- MLA. There is no sign here of the

:19:33. > :19:37.hoped-for UUP resurgence in South Antrim. Perhaps why Nesbitt opened

:19:38. > :19:42.the letter get. Also counted here votes for the Eads Antrim

:19:43. > :19:46.constituency. The UUP Maureen Murrell levitated here. All taking a

:19:47. > :19:53.bit longer to work at the elected next. One person who won't be

:19:54. > :20:00.elected, Sammy Wilson, an MP, can't be an MLA as well. Here in Armagh

:20:01. > :20:05.there are jubilant scenes earlier as Arlene Foster topped the poll. No

:20:06. > :20:09.surprise there but surge in the support in the DUP insured Lord

:20:10. > :20:17.Morrow finished just over 100 votes short on the first stage. He was

:20:18. > :20:21.elected then on stage two. On the nationalist side the SDLP targeted

:20:22. > :20:25.this seat, hoping to regain the seat lost five years ago. But does not

:20:26. > :20:29.seem to have happened. Sinn Fein are on course to retain three seats

:20:30. > :20:38.although currently newcomer John Fila is a thousand votes ahead, of

:20:39. > :20:45.Phil Flannigan. We had to have a full recount of the first stage of

:20:46. > :20:51.the 36 ballots were unaccounted for, but the SDLP MLA outgoing MLA Daniel

:20:52. > :20:55.McCrossan should retain his seat despite splits in the local party

:20:56. > :21:01.which meant to councillors stood against him, an independent social

:21:02. > :21:03.Democrats, but we still wait for the first MLA to be deemed elected in

:21:04. > :21:05.west to roll. Our Political Editor Mark Devenport

:21:06. > :21:08.is keeping a close eye on the gains What's grabbed your

:21:09. > :21:20.attention so far? Let's take a look at the share of

:21:21. > :21:24.the vote of the established parties because there was a lot of the talk

:21:25. > :21:28.of the run-up to the election to who the biggest party would be, DUP or

:21:29. > :21:31.Sinn Fein. The first reference their shows DUP in terms of votes across

:21:32. > :21:36.Northern Ireland is holding a fairly clear lead over Sinn Fein. Different

:21:37. > :21:39.from a couple of recent elections, council elections and European

:21:40. > :21:43.elections, Sinn Fein out polling the DUP, but in this instance the DUP

:21:44. > :21:48.has held the top spot. Let's see how it compares with 2011, the loss is

:21:49. > :21:53.only election and you find that in fact none of the established parties

:21:54. > :21:58.have actually put on votes. The DUP has dropped votes, Sinn Fein has

:21:59. > :22:01.dropped more votes than any and that might reflect the growth of some

:22:02. > :22:10.parties in their backyard, like people before profits, and

:22:11. > :22:14.independents. A number of DUP candidates were clinging on by

:22:15. > :22:18.narrow margins are beginning to hurt more. Do two main parties seem to

:22:19. > :22:22.hold their own in terms of seats but what are your thoughts on the

:22:23. > :22:26.performance of the SDLP and Ulster Unionists customer the leaders of

:22:27. > :22:32.those parties will be disappointed, and it doesn't look like the UUP

:22:33. > :22:35.have made any particular gains. This may be robs them of a bit of

:22:36. > :22:39.momentum that they have inherited from previous elections. The big

:22:40. > :22:47.question is how much they will be SDLP lose? They have los Fearghal

:22:48. > :22:52.McKinney, and perhaps another losses in foil and Londonderry. We were

:22:53. > :22:58.here questions of Rosie McCauley being eliminated in west Belfast.

:22:59. > :23:02.Good news for Alex Attwood, and it may be that he and Dolores Kelly

:23:03. > :23:08.will be duking it out for transfers at the end of their councils. That

:23:09. > :23:12.makes a difference as to whether they will actually qualified to get
