:00:16. > :00:20.Tributes have been paid to the Northern Ireland football

:00:21. > :00:23.supporter who died in an accident in France last night.

:00:24. > :00:26.Darren Rodgers from Ballymena was in Nice to watch

:00:27. > :00:28.the team play their first game at the Euro finals.

:00:29. > :00:31.Just a few hours later he fell from a height

:00:32. > :00:42.BBC Newsline's Mark Simpson is in Nice for us.

:00:43. > :00:50.The beach is just at the end of the promenade that you can see behind me

:00:51. > :00:58.and obviously, since last night's tragic event, the mood has changed

:00:59. > :01:01.completely. There is a sense of devastation and disbelief that

:01:02. > :01:05.somewhere can look so beautiful, something awful should happen.

:01:06. > :01:10.Friends of Darren Rodgers gathered at the place where he died. They

:01:11. > :01:16.left their tributes but in truth, they still couldn't believe he was

:01:17. > :01:20.gone. The young man from Ballymena came to France to follow Northern

:01:21. > :01:25.Ireland. In the early hours of this morning, he fell from the promenade

:01:26. > :01:30.in Nice. Darren Rodgers was not just a football fan, he played football

:01:31. > :01:37.and many of his team-mates are also in France. He was enjoying the trip,

:01:38. > :01:43.loving it. We all stuck together and met up as a local team, all local

:01:44. > :01:54.boys. How will you remember him? Everyone knows him, his cheeky rim.

:01:55. > :01:59.-- his cheeky smile. French police are investigating what happened with

:02:00. > :02:02.the help of some officers from the PSNI.

:02:03. > :02:05.It does appear that this was an accident.

:02:06. > :02:07.It happened in the early hours of the morning, somewhere around

:02:08. > :02:11.2am, and it would appear that this fan has fallen from the quay wall

:02:12. > :02:14.here on the promenade, down onto what is a rocky and stony

:02:15. > :02:16.beach, probably died from the injuries from that fall.

:02:17. > :02:31.This morning, Word quickly spread about what had happened. It puts

:02:32. > :02:34.things in perspective, it really does, our hearts go out to his

:02:35. > :02:41.family. It is horrendous news for them. We are out here to have the

:02:42. > :02:48.time of our lives and now we have lost one of our own. Sadly, life has

:02:49. > :02:52.been lost. Everyone who knew him is devastated. Struggling to understand

:02:53. > :03:00.how the trip of a lifetime could end in such a tragedy. It is not just

:03:01. > :03:03.Northern Ireland fans who have been paying tribute, Republic of Ireland

:03:04. > :03:05.fans have been paying tribute as well.

:03:06. > :03:12.This is during the Republic's match against Sweden this evening.

:03:13. > :03:16.Fans stood up and sang 'Stand up for the Ulsterman' after 24 minutes.

:03:17. > :03:23.It was mark of respect for the fact that he was 24 years of age.

:03:24. > :03:28.And Northern Ireland fans will pay their own tribute

:03:29. > :03:32.at their next match, against Ukraine on Thursday.

:03:33. > :03:34.As you heard from Mark, the Republic's team were playing

:03:35. > :03:41.Their opener in tournament ended in a 1-0 draw.

:03:42. > :03:43.Their opener in tournament ended in a 1-1 draw.

:03:44. > :03:48.Thomas Kane is at the Stade de France.

:03:49. > :03:55.The last few supporters are just leaving the stadium. It was almost

:03:56. > :03:59.the perfect start to the European Championships for the Republic of

:04:00. > :04:04.Ireland. Martin O'Neill's side completely dominated the first half,

:04:05. > :04:09.creating a number of chances. Tapped in John O'Shea going so close to

:04:10. > :04:13.latching onto Kieran Clark's header. After that, Jeff Hendrick

:04:14. > :04:22.threatened, his long-range shot can any of the crossbar. The

:04:23. > :04:25.breakthrough came in style, early in the second half, Seamus Coleman's

:04:26. > :04:29.good work finished brilliantly by Wes Hoolahan to send the supporters

:04:30. > :04:34.into dreamland. Their manager pretty happy on the sideline as well. But

:04:35. > :04:40.it was not to be, Sweden equalised with their superstar striker, Zlatan

:04:41. > :04:49.Ibrahimovic, finding space and heading into his own net. Both sides

:04:50. > :04:54.have to make do with a point at the Stade de France. Next up will be the

:04:55. > :04:55.trip to Bordeaux to take on Belgium before the Republic's final fixture

:04:56. > :04:57.against Italy. Supporters who weren't at the match

:04:58. > :05:00.but made the trip to France - were gathered in the big fan zone

:05:01. > :05:03.in central Paris. Our reporter Ita Dungan

:05:04. > :05:11.is there for us. As you can see, I am here in the

:05:12. > :05:17.shadow of the Eiffel Tower. It couldn't be any more picturesque but

:05:18. > :05:23.that result, 1-1 draw, not the result many Republic of Ireland fans

:05:24. > :05:28.had hoped for. The French have put on a fantastic fan zone experience

:05:29. > :05:33.in the centre of Paris. People from all European nationalities watching

:05:34. > :05:37.the game, drinking beer, playing football, watching football. It has

:05:38. > :05:41.to be said, when the first Republic of Ireland goal went in, this place

:05:42. > :05:47.erupted. Most of the neutrals I think were watching the game, were

:05:48. > :05:51.supporting Martin O'Neill's men. Then their heads went down a little

:05:52. > :05:56.bit when that equaliser went in. For the fans I spoke to after, they

:05:57. > :06:02.said, all is not lost. I am disappointed with the result, or to

:06:03. > :06:08.get off the mark. Sweden were there for the taking. Disappointment but

:06:09. > :06:13.at least it is better than the last euros anyway. We did OK, scored a

:06:14. > :06:18.great goal but it was a sloppy goal to concede. But we drew today, we go

:06:19. > :06:25.out and we get two good results after this. Can you see you beating

:06:26. > :06:33.Belgium? Absolutely, no doubt. Watch this space. Shane Long the leading

:06:34. > :06:36.goal-scorer. Martin O'Neill's men need to step it up a gear in

:06:37. > :06:41.Bordeaux and Belgium to make those fans happy. We will be following the

:06:42. > :06:45.team through the tournament. The Northern Ireland players

:06:46. > :06:47.are back in their base north of Lyon, following last night's 1-0

:06:48. > :06:50.defeat by Poland. Stephen Watson looks back

:06:51. > :06:51.at their disappointing start Northern Ireland's players had never

:06:52. > :07:02.experienced an occasion like this before, but they had

:07:03. > :07:05.full awareness of the They struggled to compete

:07:06. > :07:09.with their Polish opponents But Polish pressure paid off

:07:10. > :07:14.at the start of the second half. They had the chance

:07:15. > :07:29.to secure a draw but captain We will take notice of what we have

:07:30. > :07:36.done, and we are sure to have a more determined

:07:37. > :07:39.game on Thursday. Tough games, and it was very

:07:40. > :07:47.hot out there today, We have worked very hard

:07:48. > :07:52.to get the ball back, and maybe we weren't good enough

:07:53. > :07:54.in possession, to maybe cut them open.

:07:55. > :07:57.We maybe wasted a few opportunities. They have to win their next game

:07:58. > :08:08.in Lyon this Thursday. The police say they believe a man

:08:09. > :08:11.who was found dead in County Armagh this morning may have died

:08:12. > :08:16.as a result of a hit and run. The man's body was found

:08:17. > :08:19.on Shillinghill Road near Markethill The area has been cordoned

:08:20. > :08:25.off by the police. Two women have been arrested

:08:26. > :08:27.following an assault on a 19-year-old woman in

:08:28. > :08:30.Londonderry. The attack was on Saturday night

:08:31. > :08:33.in the Lecky Road area and is being treated

:08:34. > :08:36.as a sectarian hate crime. The police say the victim

:08:37. > :08:38.suffered cuts to her head The women being questioned

:08:39. > :08:45.are aged 19 and 21. The former political talks chairman

:08:46. > :08:48.Richard Haass has claimed a vote by the UK to leave

:08:49. > :08:51.the European Union could trigger violence or political deadlock

:08:52. > :08:57.in Northern Ireland. During a visit to Belfast,

:08:58. > :08:59.the Taoiseach has repeated his concerns about the potential

:09:00. > :09:02.consequences of a Brexit. Here's Our Political

:09:03. > :09:10.Editor Mark Devenport. Richard Haass may have tried to stay

:09:11. > :09:14.neutral when he was chairing interparty talks but on the European

:09:15. > :09:18.referendum, that is not his approach. On Twitter, the former US

:09:19. > :09:25.envoy suggested Brexit could trigger political gridlock, violence or

:09:26. > :09:29.calls for partition. His message did not improve the First Minister on

:09:30. > :09:34.her way home from France. In respect of the frantic could cause violence,

:09:35. > :09:37.I think that is disgraceful for anyone to suggest violence could be

:09:38. > :09:42.a consequence of us leaving the European Union, it is just nonsense.

:09:43. > :09:47.The Taoiseach believes the peace process will continue but thinks the

:09:48. > :09:50.EU support Fred has often been underestimated and forgotten.

:09:51. > :09:54.Visiting Belfast, he warned in the event of a Brexit, there would be

:09:55. > :09:59.changes on the border. We would certainly try to do what we could to

:10:00. > :10:05.preserve the common travel area but believe me, it is difficult to

:10:06. > :10:11.imagine the situation where there would be no controls or no checks on

:10:12. > :10:15.the movement of goods, if the United Kingdom left the European Union.

:10:16. > :10:21.Enda Kenny meets David Cameron later this week to make a joint pitch for

:10:22. > :10:26.the Remain case, whether you find the Taoiseach or First Minister's

:10:27. > :10:31.cases more persuasive, you only have ten days now to make up your minds.

:10:32. > :10:36.The local weather forecast is next with Barra Best.

:10:37. > :10:39.Hello there, we do have one or two scattered showers this evening

:10:40. > :10:45.The showers though will pep up as we make our way through the night

:10:46. > :10:47.but it won't be too cold, with temperatures typically

:10:48. > :10:52.Tomorrow morning, we will have the scattering of showers still out

:10:53. > :10:54.there, but it will improve slowly through the day.

:10:55. > :10:56.It will begin to brighten up towards the north-east and that

:10:57. > :10:59.brighter weather heading westwards through the afternoon,

:11:00. > :11:02.helping quite a few of us to enjoy some more in the way of sunshine.

:11:03. > :11:05.But it will take a while before sunshine comes out in parts

:11:06. > :11:08.Temperatures tomorrow about 16, maybe 17 degrees,

:11:09. > :11:11.at best in that sunshine, but still a little bit cooler around

:11:12. > :11:13.the coast when you factor in the onshore winds.

:11:14. > :11:15.Into tomorrow evening, not a bad end to the day,

:11:16. > :11:18.quite a few of us will enjoy some sunshine, although we are likely

:11:19. > :11:21.to see a few scattered showers lingering in parts of the west.

:11:22. > :11:23.Into tomorrow night, it will be largely dry,

:11:24. > :11:26.temperatures may be down a little bit into the single

:11:27. > :11:30.As we get into Wednesday, scattered showers will make a return

:11:31. > :11:34.but drier weather will push in by the end of the week.

:11:35. > :11:46.You can also keep in contact with us via Facebook and Twitter.
