:00:00. > :00:11.Football supporters and officials have paid tribute

:00:12. > :00:15.to the Northern Ireland fan who died in an accidental fall in France.

:00:16. > :00:18.Just a few hours after watching the team play their first game

:00:19. > :00:26.at the Euros, Darren Rodgers from Ballymena fell from a height

:00:27. > :00:31.During the Republic's game this evening people who had gathered

:00:32. > :00:33.at the fan zone in Belfast unfurled a banner to sympathise

:00:34. > :00:35.with the 24-year-old's family and friends.

:00:36. > :00:49.The death of 24-year-old Darren Rodgers has stunned fans here in

:00:50. > :00:54.France. We still don't know the circumstances all we know is that he

:00:55. > :00:59.fell from the promenade here in Nice on to the beach below. Friends of

:01:00. > :01:05.Darren Rodgers gathered at the place where he died. They left their

:01:06. > :01:10.tributes, but in truth, they still couldn't believe he was gone.

:01:11. > :01:14.The young man from Ballymena came to France to follow Northern Ireland.

:01:15. > :01:19.In the early hours of this morning, he fell from the promenade in Nice.

:01:20. > :01:27.Darren Rodgers wasn't just a football fan, he played football and

:01:28. > :01:33.many of his team-mates from Braid United Are also in France. We all

:01:34. > :01:41.stuck together and met up as a local team, local boys. How will you

:01:42. > :01:48.remember him? I will just remember him for being Darda. A cheeky grin.

:01:49. > :01:52.He was a great fella. French police are investigating what happened.

:01:53. > :01:56.With the help of a number of officers from the PSNI. It does

:01:57. > :02:00.appear this was an accident. It happened in the early hours of the

:02:01. > :02:05.morning somewhere around 2am and it would appear that this fan has

:02:06. > :02:12.fallen from the quay wall on the prommen thatted down tonne o on to a

:02:13. > :02:16.rocky and stoney beach. Last night fans gathered on the beach following

:02:17. > :02:20.the match. Many were close to where the tragedy occurred. This morning

:02:21. > :02:24.word quickly spread about what happened. It puts everything into

:02:25. > :02:28.prospective. It really, really does. Our hearts go out to the family back

:02:29. > :02:32.home. It is horrendous news for anyone to be waking up to. Sympathy

:02:33. > :02:37.to the family was also sent by the First Minister. Everyone here,

:02:38. > :02:43.having such a marvellous time, and then for this to happen. It really

:02:44. > :02:46.does and I know all of the fans will be deeply, deeply saddened by what

:02:47. > :02:50.happened to this young man. We are out here to have the time of our

:02:51. > :02:57.lives and now we've lost one of our own. Sadly a life has been lost and

:02:58. > :03:01.it has been Darren. Everyone who knew him is devastated and

:03:02. > :03:04.struggling to understand how the trip of a lifetime could end in such

:03:05. > :03:09.a tragedy. Most of the travelling supporters are now on their way to

:03:10. > :03:13.Lille where Northern Ireland play their next match against Ukraine on

:03:14. > :03:18.Thursday. And fans are planning their own special tribute to Darren

:03:19. > :03:19.Rodgers at the game and back in Ballymena his friends are making

:03:20. > :03:23.banners to bring to the match. One of Darren's team mates

:03:24. > :03:37.from Braid United has been paying Darren was with us for five years.

:03:38. > :03:42.He came when he was 19. He just came along with his mates. Always had a

:03:43. > :03:47.smile on his face. Was always good fun. As I've said before, you always

:03:48. > :03:55.knew when he was up to mischief because he had the wee grin on his

:03:56. > :03:58.face and then you knew your socks or your boots was missing.

:03:59. > :04:00.The Northern Ireland manager Michael O'Neill spoke of the shock

:04:01. > :04:03.that the team felt on hearing about the supporter's death.

:04:04. > :04:08.I woke this morning to find out the news about Darren and the terrible

:04:09. > :04:12.tragedy last night. So as I say, our sympathies go out to his family

:04:13. > :04:16.obviously back in Ballymena and to his friends that travelled here with

:04:17. > :04:20.him to be part of it and it is a very, very sad day. How have the

:04:21. > :04:25.players reacted to the news today? I think, you know, they were genuinely

:04:26. > :04:29.devastated to hear that. You see, we all have friends and family here at

:04:30. > :04:33.the tournament as well and to I had that someone coming out to be part

:04:34. > :04:36.of this, you know, festival of football unfortunately lost their

:04:37. > :04:40.life to a terrible tragedy. It puts everything into prospective. I

:04:41. > :04:43.suppose it puts the defeat yesterday very much into prospective? Yeah, we

:04:44. > :04:48.were disappointed we lost the game. We gave everything we had on the

:04:49. > :04:52.night, but when you travel back and you wake to find, you know, the news

:04:53. > :04:56.we received this morning, as I say, we can only sympathize with Darren's

:04:57. > :05:01.family and friends. What can the team do as a mark of respect? Well,

:05:02. > :05:06.I spoke briefly to the players about it today. We're just waiting

:05:07. > :05:11.confirmation from Uefa as regards whether we can do anything before

:05:12. > :05:17.the game. If possible, we will do that. But equally, I think the best

:05:18. > :05:20.thing the team can do is put on as good a performance as they can

:05:21. > :05:26.against Ukraine. The supporters have been magnificent. Right through the

:05:27. > :05:29.qualifying and in Niece as well and I suppose I just urge them to stick

:05:30. > :05:32.together and to look after each other when they are out here.

:05:33. > :05:34.Stephen Watson asking the questions there.

:05:35. > :05:36.The Republic of Ireland kicked off their tournament

:05:37. > :05:39.with a 1-1 draw against Sweden at the Stade de France in Paris.

:05:40. > :05:52.It was so nearly the perfect start to the European Championships for

:05:53. > :05:55.the Republic of Ireland, but Martin O'Neill's men had to make do with a

:05:56. > :06:00.point following their opening fixture in Paris.

:06:01. > :06:04.For many of the players, this was their first experience of a major

:06:05. > :06:08.tournament. But they certainly didn't look over awed by the

:06:09. > :06:12.occasion. Martin O'Neill's side dominated the early stages, cre

:06:13. > :06:18.creating a number of clear cut chances. One of the best fell to the

:06:19. > :06:23.captain, John O'Shea came so close to connecting with Kieran's Clarke

:06:24. > :06:32.header. The effort struck the crossbar. The breakthrough came

:06:33. > :06:42.after half-time. Coleman's cross finished by Hoolahan. The highlight

:06:43. > :06:47.of his Man of the Match performance. The Republic of Ireland fans and

:06:48. > :06:54.their manager certainly approved of the strike. But O'Neill's side just

:06:55. > :06:57.couldn't hang on for victory. The unfortunate Clarke heading into his

:06:58. > :07:00.own net. Well, I was delighted with the

:07:01. > :07:05.performance. The players were brilliant. Should have had the game

:07:06. > :07:08.out of sight by half-time. We were explosive. We played some great

:07:09. > :07:14.football and just couldn't get the goal. Then we get it in the second

:07:15. > :07:18.half which we deserved. We had to with stand pressure for a ten minute

:07:19. > :07:21.period and we defended them well and they got a goal out of the blue

:07:22. > :07:25.really when we were dominant. How special a moment was that for you

:07:26. > :07:29.personally? Yeah, it is up there with one of the proudest moments in

:07:30. > :07:34.football to get the goal and you know, it was a great ball in by

:07:35. > :07:40.Seamus and we were unlucky not to get the three points. You won Man of

:07:41. > :07:44.the Match, how pleasing was it to put in a performance like that?

:07:45. > :07:51.Hopefully, I'm disappointed with not getting the three points.

:07:52. > :07:56.A little bit special from Wes, wasn't it? That's what he is about.

:07:57. > :07:59.He is a genius. He is one of them players, you know what I mean

:08:00. > :08:03.sometimes, he looks like he will lose the ball, but he will come out

:08:04. > :08:07.with something brilliant. A fantastic goal for him and I'm

:08:08. > :08:11.delighted for him. Our fans were immense, they were unbelievable and

:08:12. > :08:15.if we can bring that into the next two games we can get a win on the

:08:16. > :08:20.board. Next up, it is a difficult trip to Bordeaux to take on Belgium

:08:21. > :08:22.before Martin O'Neill's men head to Lille where they will play against

:08:23. > :08:41.Italy in their final group game. Across the city Irish bars are

:08:42. > :08:45.heaving with fans. It has been a long day and the draw could have

:08:46. > :08:51.been a lot better, but it could have been a lot worse!

:08:52. > :08:53.Three hours before kick off, eight kilometres from the stadium, the

:08:54. > :09:16.battle had begun on the boulevard. # Stand up for the boys in green. #

:09:17. > :09:25.They responded, but they didn't have the numbers!

:09:26. > :09:28.As the lucky ones made their way to the stad de-France, they provided

:09:29. > :09:40.more than a little entertainment for the locals!

:09:41. > :09:44.For those without a ticket, it was the fans zone at the Eiffel Tower

:09:45. > :09:48.and for 48 minutes, it looked like the place to be!

:09:49. > :09:56.But then an equaliser and the heads went down. But all is not lost.

:09:57. > :10:03.First-half, definitely. Second half brings on Robbie Keane. Doesn't

:10:04. > :10:09.touch it. Doesn't do enough, but listen, 1-1 draw is as good as

:10:10. > :10:12.anything. You're still in it. Finished 1-1, come on Ireland! For

:10:13. > :10:17.many of these fans they will be on the road in the next few days on to

:10:18. > :10:18.Bordeaux and they will be hoping that Belgium will lose the next

:10:19. > :10:24.battle. Here at home Republic of Ireland

:10:25. > :10:29.fans gathered at the Euro fan zone This was ecstatic reaction

:10:30. > :10:37.when Hoolahan scored the first goal. But then there was the own goal

:10:38. > :10:40.and a late save by Sweden which meant there was no

:10:41. > :10:51.clear winner in the end. I would have taken a 90th minute

:10:52. > :10:55.winner more than scoring when we did. The Republic of Ireland

:10:56. > :11:00.actually did us proud. They played so well and deserved to win. I will

:11:01. > :11:03.take it, but I really would have liked the win. I know the next two

:11:04. > :11:05.games will be tough. So I think a win would have been the perfect

:11:06. > :11:09.start like. There are two more group matches

:11:10. > :11:11.to go for the Republic With such colourful and enthusiastic

:11:12. > :11:17.support, we don't want to miss out on what's happening over

:11:18. > :11:19.there at the Euros. So if you are in France or know fans

:11:20. > :11:22.who have travelled over there we'd These are ways of getting in contact

:11:23. > :11:27.with us on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter with full

:11:28. > :11:39.coverage on our news online page. A man has been arrested

:11:40. > :11:41.in connection with the murder of Stephen Carson in Belfast in

:11:42. > :11:44.February. The victim, who was 28,

:11:45. > :11:48.was shot in the head at his home in Walmer Street off the Ormeau Road

:11:49. > :11:52.in the south of the city. He was eating dinner

:11:53. > :11:54.with his partner and nine-year-old son when a gang carrying a hammer

:11:55. > :11:57.and a shotgun burst in. The man detained today was arrested

:11:58. > :12:00.on suspicion of murder. Three other men have already been

:12:01. > :12:02.in court in connection The police say they believe a man

:12:03. > :12:13.who was found dead in County Armagh this morning may have died

:12:14. > :12:16.as a result of a hit and run. The man's body was found

:12:17. > :12:18.on Shillinghill Road near Markethill The area remains cordoned

:12:19. > :12:26.off by the police. The Fire Service are trying

:12:27. > :12:30.to rescue two youths who are stuck They are trapped in the cab

:12:31. > :12:42.of the crane 50-feet up in the air at a construction site

:12:43. > :12:44.on Pate's Lane. A specialist rescue team

:12:45. > :12:46.is working to bring them down. Two women have been arrested

:12:47. > :12:48.following an assault on a 19-year-old woman in

:12:49. > :12:50.Londonderry. The attack was on Saturday night

:12:51. > :12:52.in the Lecky Road area and is being treated

:12:53. > :12:54.as a sectarian hate crime. The police say the victim

:12:55. > :12:57.suffered cuts to her head The women being questioned

:12:58. > :13:04.are aged 19 and 21. The former political talks chairman

:13:05. > :13:06.Richard Haass has claimed a vote by the UK to leave

:13:07. > :13:10.the European Union could trigger violence or political deadlock

:13:11. > :13:14.in Northern Ireland. During a visit to Belfast,

:13:15. > :13:20.the Taoiseach has repeated his concerns about the potential

:13:21. > :13:22.consequences of a Brexit. Here's Our Political

:13:23. > :13:25.Editor Mark Devenport. Richard Haass may have

:13:26. > :13:27.tried to stay neutral when he was chairing inter-party

:13:28. > :13:29.talks but on the European referendum, that

:13:30. > :13:32.is not his approach. On Twitter, the former US

:13:33. > :13:36.envoy suggested Brexit could trigger political gridlock,

:13:37. > :13:38.violence or calls for partition. His message did not impress

:13:39. > :13:41.the First Minister on her way In respect of the fact that it

:13:42. > :13:48.could cause violence, I think that's quite disgraceful

:13:49. > :13:52.for anyone to suggest that violence will be a consequence of us

:13:53. > :13:55.leaving the European Union. The Taoiseach believes the peace

:13:56. > :13:59.process will continue but thinks the EU support has often been

:14:00. > :14:05.underestimated and forgotten. Visiting Belfast, he warned that

:14:06. > :14:08.in the event of a Brexit, there We would certainly try to do

:14:09. > :14:15.what we could to preserve the common travel area, but believe me,

:14:16. > :14:19.it's difficult to imagine a situation where there would be no

:14:20. > :14:23.controls or no checks on the movement of goods,

:14:24. > :14:27.if the United Kingdom Enda Kenny meets David Cameron

:14:28. > :14:34.later this week to make a joint Whether you find the Taoiseach

:14:35. > :14:38.or First Minister's cases more persuasive, you only have ten days

:14:39. > :14:51.now to make up your minds. The Northern Ireland Environment

:14:52. > :14:56.Agency is investigating a major fuel spill into the sea off

:14:57. > :14:59.the County Antrim coast. The manufacturing company

:15:00. > :15:01.Caterpillar says a control unit at their plan in Larne failed,

:15:02. > :15:03.leading to 40,000 litres of red diesel running

:15:04. > :15:06.through a storm drain into the sea. It was part of a bigger

:15:07. > :15:10.spill on the site. The oil formed a long slick just

:15:11. > :15:19.offshore at the weekend. The firl says it has employed an

:15:20. > :15:22.environmental contractor to help with the clean-up.

:15:23. > :15:25.In memory of the 49 people killed in the terrorist attack in Orlando,

:15:26. > :15:28.City Hall in Belfast is currently lit in rainbow colours.

:15:29. > :15:34.A book of condolence was opened there earlier today.

:15:35. > :15:38.At midnight tonight, the lighting will be changing over

:15:39. > :15:42.to the colours of the US flag, red, white and blue until dawn.

:15:43. > :15:47.On BBC Newsline tomorrow evening, a story from Kevin Magee.

:15:48. > :15:54.A leading County Down businessman who converted two property companies

:15:55. > :15:59.into charities is being asked to repay millions of pounds. He has

:16:00. > :16:03.lost control of a major property empire which includes this entire

:16:04. > :16:07.street in East Belfast and hundreds of homes in West Belfast. I will

:16:08. > :16:12.have a special report beginning on BBC Radio Ulster in the morning and

:16:13. > :16:19.I will have more on BBC Newsline at 6.30pm tomorrow evening.

:16:20. > :16:25.Now Barra Best has the latest forecast. Through the course of the

:16:26. > :16:29.night, the scattered showers are going to pep up and they will be

:16:30. > :16:32.with us to begin with tomorrow, but it is an improving picture as we

:16:33. > :16:36.make our way through the day. Gradually improving, by around lunch

:16:37. > :16:40.time from the north. But to begin with, a widespread scattering of

:16:41. > :16:44.showers. The odd heavy one is possible as well. A grey, damp

:16:45. > :16:46.start, unfortunately. If you are ale travelling tomorrow, it is an

:16:47. > :16:50.unsettled picture with low pressure in control with the xption of

:16:51. > :16:54.western and northern areas of Scotland. Here dry with sunshine,

:16:55. > :16:56.but cloudier elsewhere with a scattering of showers, but

:16:57. > :17:02.temperatures aren't bad for the time of year. For us, it will brighten up

:17:03. > :17:07.from the north coast and some sunshine will push in across many

:17:08. > :17:10.areas by evening time. One or two scattered showers that will linger

:17:11. > :17:14.across parts of the south and the west. Wednesday, there will be more

:17:15. > :17:19.scattered showers coming. The odd heavy burst is likely as well. Not

:17:20. > :17:22.great conditions unfortunately for the Lisburn half-marathon. You will

:17:23. > :17:27.want to prep yourself for wet weather. Temperatures will be 15 or

:17:28. > :17:30.16 Celsius. Maybe feeling cooler and blustery at times around the coast

:17:31. > :17:33.when you factor in the easterly wind. Scattered showers tomorrow and

:17:34. > :17:36.on Wednesday. One or two in the forecast for Thursday, but the good

:17:37. > :17:39.news is there is a glimmer of hope by the end of the week. High

:17:40. > :17:42.pressure is trying to build for Friday and Saturday. If that wins

:17:43. > :17:44.out, we are expecting dry conditions at least for the beginning of the

:17:45. > :17:47.weekend. Good night. Our next BBC Newsline

:17:48. > :17:51.is at 6.25am in the morning
