:00:00. > :00:00.We are back with the late news at 10:05pm.

:00:07. > :00:11.The Republic of Ireland are out of the European Championships

:00:12. > :00:17.Robbie Brady's penalty in the second minute

:00:18. > :00:19.wasn't enough to hold off the tournament favourites.

:00:20. > :00:35.The European adventure ended here in Lyon form Artur Daniel 's side

:00:36. > :00:38.despite a brave performance against the hosts who went on to progress to

:00:39. > :00:43.the quarterfinals. It was a dream start for the Republic. When Shane

:00:44. > :00:47.Long was fouled, Robbie Brady make no mistake the penalty. There were

:00:48. > :00:51.opportunities to extend the lead. The French piled on the pressure as

:00:52. > :00:56.the game progressed. Atletico Madrid star Antoine Griezmann scored twice

:00:57. > :01:02.in 4/2 minutes in the second half to swing the game in favour of France.

:01:03. > :01:06.Shane Duffy was dismissed soon after as a poster and equaliser but they

:01:07. > :01:12.were unable to find a second goal. It has grown in seven or eight

:01:13. > :01:17.minutes. I think that we could have utilised that in the last 30 minutes

:01:18. > :01:21.of the game but I could not be more proud of the team. Really fantastic

:01:22. > :01:26.effort. And throughout the tournament. I could not be more

:01:27. > :01:31.proud. Of the supporters. The team will return to their team based in

:01:32. > :01:33.Versailles following their most successful ever European

:01:34. > :01:41.Championships, with plenty of positives to take, looking ahead to

:01:42. > :01:43.the World Cup for the fine campaign. -- World Cup qualifying campaign.

:01:44. > :01:45.Well our reporter Ita Dungan's been watching with the fans.

:01:46. > :01:48.Ita, a lot of disappointment there, then?

:01:49. > :01:57.Yes, we are here in the heart of Lyon. Unfortunately this will be the

:01:58. > :02:01.last French city Irish fans will visit on their Euro 2016 two.

:02:02. > :02:08.Playing the hosts was always going to be special. And this did not fail

:02:09. > :02:12.to give that special feeling. Hundreds of fans still during to get

:02:13. > :02:17.into the fan zone, and inside, it was absolutely packed with mostly

:02:18. > :02:21.French bands, it has to be said, singing very loudly. That was until

:02:22. > :02:27.that Robbie Brady penalty hit the back of the net. Then they were

:02:28. > :02:32.silenced. Then in the second half, those two goals went in and

:02:33. > :02:33.unfortunately it was time for the Irish fans to pack their cases and

:02:34. > :02:43.head home. Absolutely brilliant. Absolutely

:02:44. > :02:50.fantastic fans. Brilliant, fantastic. Disappointed, but that is

:02:51. > :02:56.the way it goes. It has been a magic experience, fantastic, but the fans,

:02:57. > :03:00.and the Northern Ireland fans, everyone, it's been absolutely

:03:01. > :03:05.brilliant. We are proud of France and very proud of Ireland, because

:03:06. > :03:09.their fans are very good fans. Fantastic. Great from the Irish

:03:10. > :03:23.fans. Merci, Merci, Irlande. That sums up

:03:24. > :03:31.the past three weeks. Shadow Northern Ireland Secretary

:03:32. > :03:34.Vernon Coaker has become the eighth member of Jeremy Corbyn's Shadow

:03:35. > :03:36.cabinet to resign today. It follws Mr Corbyn's decision

:03:37. > :03:39.to sack Hilary Benn. Mr Coaker held the post twice -

:03:40. > :03:42.first between 2011 and 2013 and was again appointed to the role

:03:43. > :03:44.by Jeremy Corbyn The Secretary of State has dismissed

:03:45. > :03:52.a claim by the Scottish First Minister Nicola Sturgeon that

:03:53. > :03:55.Stormont or the Scottish Parliament could veto the outcome

:03:56. > :03:58.of the EU referendum. The Deputy First Minister Martin

:03:59. > :04:05.McGuinness says he's requested Here's our political

:04:06. > :04:13.correspondent Gareth Gordon. As soon as Brexit was confirmed on

:04:14. > :04:18.Friday, Sinn Fein called for a board of Paul. Today they said that was

:04:19. > :04:22.not their main priority. From my perspective in the immediate future,

:04:23. > :04:25.although we are focused on the issue of the board of Paul and we believe

:04:26. > :04:31.that there should be one at some stage in future, the immediate task

:04:32. > :04:34.has to be how big democratically expressed wishes of the people he in

:04:35. > :04:40.the north of Ireland candidate at four in the context of these huge

:04:41. > :04:45.debate which will ensue over the course of the next number of months.

:04:46. > :04:51.Could the result be vetoed in the places which voted to remain?

:04:52. > :04:54.Northern Ireland and Scotland? Obviously Parliament is sovereign,

:04:55. > :04:58.but in the weeks and months ahead, we will be working with both the

:04:59. > :05:06.Scottish Government and the Northern Ireland Assembly but ultimately it

:05:07. > :05:09.is Parliament 's decision whether we repeal in 1972 European committees

:05:10. > :05:12.act or whether we don't. It is a constitutional question at things

:05:13. > :05:16.different answers from the Northern Ireland parties. I don't believe

:05:17. > :05:20.that the Leave campaign has thought this through. They did not expect it

:05:21. > :05:23.win and now they do not know how to deal with this. We believe that the

:05:24. > :05:25.Northern Ireland Assembly at the Scottish Parliament have the

:05:26. > :05:29.opportunity to say no. Parliamentarians who would

:05:30. > :05:32.disrespect the view of the clear instructions given to them by the

:05:33. > :05:38.British people would be making a huge mistake. There is no dispute

:05:39. > :05:40.that those of us on the remain side won the referendum in Northern

:05:41. > :05:44.Ireland, but it was a UK- wide referendum and the UK Parliament

:05:45. > :05:51.still has primacy in these matters. The main union leader said we were

:05:52. > :05:54.on the edge of an age of uncertainty. Quite a lot of

:05:55. > :05:59.nationalists over recent years have been relaxed about their aspirations

:06:00. > :06:02.for a united Ireland and have seen as an aspiration rather than

:06:03. > :06:06.something they want to act to make a reality. And they are very angry,

:06:07. > :06:12.and we need to listen to those voices. What is clear is that not

:06:13. > :06:14.much is clear. That is unlikely to change, any time soon.

:06:15. > :06:28.Good evening. We are at the start of weather. It has not been pleasant

:06:29. > :06:33.today, dull and damp at times. This evening, a fair amount of cloud and

:06:34. > :06:37.patches of rain and drizzle as the breeze picks up, that cloud will

:06:38. > :06:40.start to break up with clear spells and one or two showers in the North

:06:41. > :06:46.and West. Temperatures around 10 Celsius. Tomorrow, a brighter day.

:06:47. > :06:50.Breezy with showers around, but not too many during the morning, when

:06:51. > :06:55.they will be mainly light with decent spells of sunshine. A

:06:56. > :06:58.brighter day for many parts tomorrow, when the cloud and rain

:06:59. > :07:02.clears from the south-east. Lots of dry weather in the sunshine across

:07:03. > :07:06.England and Wales. It will be quite warm sunshine when it comes through

:07:07. > :07:11.as well. Plenty of showers across Scotland, some of those quite heavy.

:07:12. > :07:14.The northern half of Ireland in the afternoon could well see one or two

:07:15. > :07:18.sharp showers running through before they ease away on the breeze later

:07:19. > :07:24.on with more in the way of sunshine to end the day. Some exposure to the

:07:25. > :07:30.breeze on the north coast, maybe 16 Celsius with a bit of shelter. Not

:07:31. > :07:32.feeling that bad. The rest of the week, one weather front after

:07:33. > :07:34.another coming in with heavy bursts of rain at times and temperatures

:07:35. > :07:37.generally feeling average. Our next BBC Newsline

:07:38. > :07:39.bulletin is at a 22:15pm. From everyone on the BBC

:07:40. > :07:42.Newsline team, goodbye.
