:01:17. > :01:18.in the south of England A Royal Marine from Larne Ciaran

:01:19. > :01:23.Maxwell who was arrested at his based yesterday

:01:24. > :01:25.is being questioned about two caches of weapons linked to dissident

:01:26. > :01:27.republicans found near Several searches are also continuing

:01:28. > :01:33.in the south of England where Ciaran Maxwell

:01:34. > :01:36.was arrested yesterday. It's also emerged that before

:01:37. > :01:39.leaving Larne to join the Marines, the 30-year-old had been the victim

:01:40. > :01:42.of a loyalist attack. Mervyn Jess has more

:01:43. > :01:56.on the background to the arrest The search operation in southern

:01:57. > :02:00.England gathered pace today as more officers at the Devon and Cornwall

:02:01. > :02:06.police force were drafted in to help with the investigation. The search

:02:07. > :02:08.is focusing on a house near the city of Exeter in Devon, where Ciaran

:02:09. > :02:13.Maxwell is believed to have stayed. Officers are also checking an area

:02:14. > :02:18.of nearby woodland. Yesterday, Ciaran Maxwell's hometown of Larne,

:02:19. > :02:22.two houses were searched in connection with this enquiry. It is

:02:23. > :02:27.understood that laptops and mobile phones were seized for examination.

:02:28. > :02:31.This morning, we returned to the scene of yesterday's researchers in

:02:32. > :02:33.Larne put up I knocked on the door of one of the properties that were

:02:34. > :02:38.searched yesterday. I spoke to a woman inside and asked her if she

:02:39. > :02:41.had any comment to make on what was happening. She told me, they didn't

:02:42. > :02:46.know what was happening. Ciaran Maxwell has been arrested in England

:02:47. > :02:50.and we are here in Larne. We are in the dark. The 30 Royal Marine was

:02:51. > :02:54.arrested yesterday in connection with an anti-terrorist enquiry

:02:55. > :03:03.involving London's Metropolitan Police. It is understood

:03:04. > :03:08.intelligence officers from MI5 were also involved. It is still to be

:03:09. > :03:13.linked to the discovery of two terrorist arms loads near Larne

:03:14. > :03:21.earlier this year. The hides were found to contain bumming tee bombing

:03:22. > :03:33.and done implements and an improvised rocket. It is expected --

:03:34. > :03:37.bombing and gun implements. He has also posted pictures of military

:03:38. > :03:41.exercises he has been involved with as a Marine. Yesterday was the first

:03:42. > :03:46.time that Ciaran Maxwell featured in a news story. 14 years ago, a

:03:47. > :03:58.teenage Ciaran Maxwell made the news when he was attacked K in attacked

:03:59. > :04:06.here in Ciaran Maxwell. -- attacks here in Larne. Police have searched

:04:07. > :04:10.the marine's lock at his military base in Somerset as part of the

:04:11. > :04:18.ongoing investigation. We are searching for items in connection

:04:19. > :04:24.with the affects for which the man has been arrested. It is an early

:04:25. > :04:27.days of the investigation. Devon police say the search operations

:04:28. > :04:30.will continue through the weekend as more officers arrived to help

:04:31. > :04:32.Around 30,000 pupils in Northern Ireland have

:04:33. > :04:36.There's been another rise in the number receiving A* to C

:04:37. > :04:39.grades, as our education correspondent Robbie

:04:40. > :04:47.Letting all the tension out after two years of hard work...

:04:48. > :04:54.And Shauna wasn't alone in getting good news

:04:55. > :05:00.at Little Flower Girls School in North Belfast.

:05:01. > :05:08.I got a bee in my science, and a in sports studies, an a in maths.

:05:09. > :05:09.Many are planning to follow A-levels after GCSEs,

:05:10. > :05:19.I'm training to work with dogs, I'm going to train to groom them and

:05:20. > :05:21.have my own shop doing that. The performance gap between girls

:05:22. > :05:24.and boys has widened, too. Undoubtedly there is a difference

:05:25. > :05:26.with maturity, but I think things open up

:05:27. > :05:38.and equal out during time. That is very important to remember

:05:39. > :05:40.that this is a measure at 16 when we met again at 18, things have evened

:05:41. > :05:42.out. But results across Northern

:05:43. > :05:44.Ireland have risen again. The proportion of entries awarded A*

:05:45. > :05:47.to C grades increased to over 79% while the number attracting the top

:05:48. > :05:59.A and A* star grades Those in proving results will always

:06:00. > :06:04.spark debates about standards but the people here seem delighted their

:06:05. > :06:09.counterparts across Northern Ireland have again outperformed those in

:06:10. > :06:11.England and Wales. This is just a good news story.

:06:12. > :06:12.And that was the Education Minister's message.

:06:13. > :06:15.We have seen very high standards improved upon year on year, and also

:06:16. > :06:19.Northern Ireland is proudly leading the way across the United Kingdom.

:06:20. > :06:21.Pupils at Oakgrove College in Derry were also happy,

:06:22. > :06:23.although some did have concerns about how their family

:06:24. > :06:37.It's kind of like I have to continue because my siblings have

:06:38. > :06:40.It's something that we shouldn't have to worry about.

:06:41. > :06:43.But on a day of good news for many, one pupil at Hazelwood College

:06:44. > :06:47.in Belfast had extra reason to celebrate.

:06:48. > :06:57.So, I got the results I need to go on and study A-levels and do ICT,

:06:58. > :06:59.biology and it is also my birthday today.

:07:00. > :07:13.We will be hearing from the American rock band, Red Hot Chilli Peppers,

:07:14. > :07:16.head of their big gig in Belfast tonight.

:07:17. > :07:19.The police say they are treating an attack on a house

:07:20. > :07:21.in North Belfast last night as a hate crime.

:07:22. > :07:23.A window in the house at Atlantic Avenue was smashed

:07:24. > :07:28.A family from Slovakia were there at the time

:07:29. > :07:31.but no one was in the room where the window was smashed.

:07:32. > :07:34.A neighbour said that while police went to the scene last night

:07:35. > :07:37.after the window was broken, a pipe bomb was not

:07:38. > :07:42.discovered inside until 9:30am this morning.

:07:43. > :07:45.He said he carried it out of the house and called the police.

:07:46. > :07:48.The area was cordoned off for several hours until the device,

:07:49. > :07:51.which was described by the police as viable, was dealt with.

:07:52. > :07:56.The family say they are now hoping to move out of the area.

:07:57. > :07:59.More than 30,000 people waited more than a year to see a hospital

:08:00. > :08:03.consultant according to new figures from the Department of Health.

:08:04. > :08:09.That's an increase of 6% on this time last year.

:08:10. > :08:11.At the end of June 2016 more than 225,000 people

:08:12. > :08:15.were on the list to see a consultant for the first time.

:08:16. > :08:17.There were also 96,000 waiting for medical tests or procedures.

:08:18. > :08:19.70,000 patients are waiting to go into hospital.

:08:20. > :08:40.We need to do better. The Department of Health needs to do better. We

:08:41. > :08:45.need to be realistic. Rather than a short-term solution, we need long

:08:46. > :08:48.term stable budget solutions to allow the departments and senior

:08:49. > :08:49.officials to manage the budget so they can be better prepared for

:08:50. > :08:52.these waiting lists. A woman from Dungannon has been

:08:53. > :08:54.jailed for three months after pleading guilty to making

:08:55. > :08:57.false statements to the police about The court heard that Dorothy Gardner

:08:58. > :09:03.from Killycanavan Road wasn't at a hustings event in 2015,

:09:04. > :09:06.where she alleged Mr Wells made A court heard today that this woman

:09:07. > :09:17.wanted to 'get Jim Wells'. The 49-year-old mother tried to do

:09:18. > :09:19.that by making false It centred on this event

:09:20. > :09:24.in Downpatrick ahead of the 2015 general election when Mr Wells

:09:25. > :09:32.was accused of making homophobic He stood down as Health minister

:09:33. > :09:36.following the controversy Dorothy Gardner told police

:09:37. > :09:39.she was at the event with a group of protestors She claimed she'd

:09:40. > :09:42.heckled Mr Wells and had She claimed she'd

:09:43. > :09:45.heckled Mr Wells and had The court heard today these

:09:46. > :09:49.allegations and others were found to be false and no video

:09:50. > :09:51.was produced by Ms Gardner. In fact, police established

:09:52. > :09:55.that she wasn't at the event. At a previous court appearance

:09:56. > :09:57.Ms Gardner admitted Outside court Mr Wells said he hoped

:09:58. > :10:13.it sent a message to others. I think it is important today to

:10:14. > :10:17.remember that politicians cannot be set up and destroyed as the result

:10:18. > :10:20.of totally false allegations. It goes way beyond what happened to me.

:10:21. > :10:23.If people are going to make complaints about politicians they

:10:24. > :10:26.should at least be truthful. We have the right to have the truth said

:10:27. > :10:28.about what we say. The judge said that Ms Gardeners

:10:29. > :10:31.statement not only wasted police time but damages the justice system

:10:32. > :10:33.and the prospects of those She was sentecned to

:10:34. > :10:56.three months in prison. In Brazil to officials from the

:10:57. > :11:00.Olympic Council of Ireland have arrived at Rio's police headquarters

:11:01. > :11:04.to meet detectives. They were there to cooperate with the investigation

:11:05. > :11:09.into the alleged mis-selling of Olympic tickets. The arrested

:11:10. > :11:12.official's legal team has made a second application for bail. His

:11:13. > :11:17.lawyers will ask the court to place him under house arrest, instead of

:11:18. > :11:19.holding him in prison. He has denied any wrongdoing.

:11:20. > :11:21.Hundreds of mourners gathered in west Belfast today

:11:22. > :11:24.for the funeral of Mary Murphy, the widow of Joseph Murphy who was

:11:25. > :11:29.Joseph Murphy's remains, which were exhumed last year,

:11:30. > :11:32.were released by the coroner this week so that the couple

:11:33. > :11:39.Our reporter Aileen Moynagh was at today's funeral.

:11:40. > :11:42.In August 1971, Joseph Murphy was injured in shootings involving

:11:43. > :11:46.the Parachute Regiment in Ballymurphy.

:11:47. > :11:50.He died 13 days later, on August 22nd, in hospital.

:11:51. > :11:57.Three days ago, also on August 22nd, his widow Mary Murphy died.

:11:58. > :12:01.Mr Murphy's body was exhumed last October as part

:12:02. > :12:08.Today, side by side, the couple, reunited in death, were brought

:12:09. > :12:13.into Corpus Christi Church near their family home.

:12:14. > :12:18.Mary Murphy campaigned for decades for answers to questions

:12:19. > :12:23.Early last year, the Murphy family said they believed he was shot

:12:24. > :12:26.at a military barracks after being injured and that

:12:27. > :12:30.a bullet may still be lodged in his leg.

:12:31. > :12:33.Then, in a review of evidence into the Ballymurphy shootings

:12:34. > :12:36.Coroner Jim Kitson granted an exhumation order of Mr Murphy's

:12:37. > :12:41.body because of the "exceptional circumstances" of the case.

:12:42. > :12:45.A bullet was recovered by investigators.

:12:46. > :12:48.This week the coroner allowed Mr Murphy's remains to be released

:12:49. > :12:52.so that he could be buried with his wife.

:12:53. > :12:56.During the requiem mass, Father Darach Mac Giolla Cathain

:12:57. > :13:00.told the congregation of God's perfect timing in that both Mary

:13:01. > :13:02.and Joseph's deaths and burials coincided on the same dates

:13:03. > :13:09.He also talked about how Mrs Murphy dealt with the loss of her husband.

:13:10. > :13:12.Joseph and Mary Murphy were buried in a family plot

:13:13. > :13:22.Aileen Moynagh, BBC Newsline, west Belfast.

:13:23. > :13:23.Government papers from the 1980s, just released

:13:24. > :13:27.by the Public Records Office, describe Sinn Fein's Gerry Kelly

:13:28. > :13:30.as an extremely dangerous and dedicated terrorist.

:13:31. > :13:34.The files also highlight that senior Northern Ireland Office civil

:13:35. > :13:38.servants were relieved when the Dutch courts decided

:13:39. > :13:42.to return Mr Kelly and another IRA Maze escapee Brendan McFarlane

:13:43. > :13:51.Our Political Editor Mark Devenport reports.

:13:52. > :13:57.IRA bombs and loyalist murders in the 1980s, it was the men of

:13:58. > :14:03.violence who appeared to set the agenda but these government files

:14:04. > :14:10.reveal tentative efforts to get talks underway. Representatives from

:14:11. > :14:14.the parties did meet in secret in Germany in 1988. The government

:14:15. > :14:18.thanked the organiser, a German clergyman, at a meeting for months

:14:19. > :14:25.later, despite harbouring some doubts about his knowledge. He

:14:26. > :14:29.seemed a well-meaning man. Reading what he said, he talked about the

:14:30. > :14:35.need for an Irish dimension, he talked about the need to know the

:14:36. > :14:39.views of the republican movement, the Unionist concerns, but in many

:14:40. > :14:44.ways he had a grasp of our political reality then. The documents say a

:14:45. > :14:48.fit person at the talks had a difficult role to play. Representing

:14:49. > :14:52.the views of the republican movement but remaining acceptable to the

:14:53. > :14:56.Unionists. The file doesn't name this fifth man, but subsequently he

:14:57. > :15:00.was revealed to have been the priest Alec Reed. It was a different area,

:15:01. > :15:05.although some of the characters mentioned in these archives are

:15:06. > :15:12.still active in politics today. The files contain a report on the duck

:15:13. > :15:17.'s extradition hearing, for two IRA Maze escapees, Gerry Kelly and

:15:18. > :15:21.Brendan McFarlane. A Northern Ireland Office assessment describes

:15:22. > :15:25.Gerry Kelly, a north Belfast MLA as a in extremely dangerous and

:15:26. > :15:29.dedicated terrorist who presents a continuing escape risk. The

:15:30. > :15:33.secretary of a tap to invoke a prerogative of mercy because some of

:15:34. > :15:36.the men's offences went extraditable but when they were due to be

:15:37. > :15:42.returned an official concluded that the case had been a success. It will

:15:43. > :15:46.be the first time that terrorists had been extradited from a foreign

:15:47. > :15:49.country to Northern Ireland. Throughout this period, the

:15:50. > :15:54.government struggled with how to address deprivation in areas like

:15:55. > :15:59.West Belfast, where Catholic male unemployment was at 47%. He came

:16:00. > :16:03.across one strongly worded document from the head of the Northern

:16:04. > :16:09.Ireland civil service. The head civil servant talk about the ghetto

:16:10. > :16:14.mentality. Less than civilised behaviour of the inhabitants and the

:16:15. > :16:18.fact that they would be killing terrorism with kindness. Some would

:16:19. > :16:21.say, do you have two kill British soldiers to get government support?

:16:22. > :16:27.In the end, it becomes a major issue and money is part of it. Several

:16:28. > :16:32.files and 30 government's problems with the McBride principal's

:16:33. > :16:36.campaign on job discrimination. The Secretary of State, Peter Brooke,

:16:37. > :16:40.Verity Cabinet colleagues that the implementation of tough and radical

:16:41. > :16:44.employment laws would be crucial to the success of the government's

:16:45. > :16:45.Northern Ireland policies and that perceptions abroad, especially in

:16:46. > :16:50.the USA. We meet up with the rising stars in

:16:51. > :17:01.the world of golf. Over the next two days some

:17:02. > :17:04.of the world's biggest music stars take to the stage in Belfast

:17:05. > :17:06.at the annual Tennant's An estimated 40,000 people

:17:07. > :17:27.are expected to descend Hello, we are backstage here at the

:17:28. > :17:31.Tennant's Vital Festival. It is a lovely evening for an outdoor music

:17:32. > :17:36.festival. Fans are pouring in behind me here. The music has already got

:17:37. > :17:40.underway. Some of the support acts are on stage. Of course, the main

:17:41. > :17:44.act, the headline is tonight, the one everyone is waiting to see, Red

:17:45. > :17:49.Hot Chilli Peppers and I am delighted to tell you that their

:17:50. > :17:54.drummer joins me now. Chad, welcome to Belfast, welcome back, you have

:17:55. > :18:01.played here before. What do you love about an audience here? Do you get a

:18:02. > :18:05.good reaction from them? I must say, the Belfast audiences are some of

:18:06. > :18:10.the best and it sounds like I'm, you know, saying some kind of cliched

:18:11. > :18:18.line but they are so passionate. They are so wonderful. We played

:18:19. > :18:22.here, the first time was in 1992. I remember it being one of the wildest

:18:23. > :18:30.gigs we ever did. People jumping on the balconies, just having the

:18:31. > :18:37.greatest time. Belfast are a big punk Rock city. What are your

:18:38. > :18:45.memories of the gig in 2003? We filmed a concert there. It's a

:18:46. > :18:52.beautiful setting for a concert and the people, Irish people, they are

:18:53. > :18:56.so passionate, so wonderful. Fans of all ages, people support you from

:18:57. > :19:07.young to older. What can they expect to hear? Some of your new songs,

:19:08. > :19:12.some of the old ones, too? We will play a little bit of the Ireland and

:19:13. > :19:17.the new. Just we are going to play our hearts out like we do every

:19:18. > :19:22.night. We have been doing a lot of festivals but we have had a little

:19:23. > :19:26.break, two weeks off, this is our first show back. Everyone is really

:19:27. > :19:36.excited to play again. We will feed of the energy of the crowd and play

:19:37. > :19:39.some of the old tunes and we are excited about playing some of our

:19:40. > :19:46.new songs as well. We have four new songs and a bunch of others. Thank

:19:47. > :19:49.you for joining us tonight, Chad from Red Hot Chilli Peppers. They

:19:50. > :19:54.are expected on stage at 9pm tonight. I think Catherine has found

:19:55. > :19:56.a new friend! Looks like great fun they're!

:19:57. > :19:59.A superintendent in the PSNI has become a the talk of Bangor

:20:00. > :20:05.and beyond after becoming a poster boy of an online ad from the police.

:20:06. > :20:08.The Facebook posting is to encourage women to join the PSNI in the hope

:20:09. > :20:11.they might bump into him in the canteen.

:20:12. > :20:30.The latest weapon in the PSNI recruitment drive.

:20:31. > :20:32.The Bangor pin up boy with the focus on attracting women

:20:33. > :20:38.Attention ladies, our bobby seems to be causing quite the impression.

:20:39. > :20:45.When it comes to sexism of any kind it is always banter and fun and when

:20:46. > :20:49.they objectify people and talk about body images of various kinds,

:20:50. > :20:53.whether attractive or not, they always say it is a bit of fun but

:20:54. > :20:54.actually it isn't and I think it can be hurtful to people.

:20:55. > :21:06.As an organisation we have embraced a significant amount of change.

:21:07. > :21:10.Would this latest advertisement encourage you?

:21:11. > :21:23.I don't see why not put up he looks handsome. Would you fall for it? If

:21:24. > :21:32.30 years younger maybe! It is encouraged women, ladies it says

:21:33. > :21:38.there, too joined the. RIGHT. Is it sexist? No, I don't think is at all.

:21:39. > :21:50.If there was a woman there, without the sexist? I don't know. If there

:21:51. > :21:55.was a woman, would it encourage you? Who knows, who knows! He isn't

:21:56. > :22:01.single, he is married with two children. He has been inundated with

:22:02. > :22:02.requests for interviews but he is not saying anything according to the

:22:16. > :22:24.with the sport. Rory hit the headlines earlier

:22:59. > :23:01.to see. It really was. It seems like there was a great atmosphere down

:26:46. > :26:49.more sunshine developing and we will still have some decent temperatures

:26:50. > :26:56.tomorrow, just not as warm as the last couple of days. 18 or 19

:26:57. > :27:04.Celsius, maybe 20 in County Down. Cruel and fresher in the breeze. 23

:27:20. > :27:23.evening. We are expecting showers, though, in the North West. There

:27:24. > :27:28.will be brightness from time to time, some sunshine around on

:27:29. > :27:31.Saturday. On Sunday, we have a few things going around. This looks like
