:00:00. > :00:17.This is BBC Newsline and these are the headlines

:00:18. > :00:24.A lap of legends at Windsor Park - two Paralympic champions ask why

:00:25. > :00:39.I was wanting to know, or was it about who we represent? The two that

:00:40. > :00:43.are either compete for Great Britain and those who are compete for the

:00:44. > :00:45.Irish. Was it about achievement or not?

:00:46. > :00:47.Described as the Orange Order's greatest advocate -

:00:48. > :00:50.tributes are paid to Drew Nelson who has died.

:00:51. > :00:52.The gift of free parking for christmas shoppers -

:00:53. > :00:54.will Belfast council be convinced to take it back?

:00:55. > :00:56.A digital detox - would losing their smartphones send

:00:57. > :01:00.We'll have the latest from Hanover where Northern Ireland's footballers

:01:01. > :01:04.are preparing to take on Germany in a World Cup qualifier.

:01:05. > :01:06.And after another lovely day for most today -

:01:07. > :01:09.find out how the rest of the week is shaping up

:01:10. > :01:50.Saturday was supposed to be a night of celebration

:01:51. > :01:52.at the new National football stadium at Windsor Park in Belfast.

:01:53. > :01:55.But the official opening has now been overshadowed by who was not

:01:56. > :01:58.invited to take part in a parade of local sporting greats -

:01:59. > :02:00.what was called a "Lap of Legends" on the pitch.

:02:01. > :02:03.Two of our Paralympic gold medallists - Jason Smyth

:02:04. > :02:04.and Michael McKillop - were not originally

:02:05. > :02:08.BBC Newsline's Mark Simpson is at Windsor Park.

:02:09. > :02:11.It was quite a night on Saturday, the opening of the new

:02:12. > :02:13.multi-million-pound stadium, the biggest crowd here for decades and

:02:14. > :02:16.Northern Ireland work areas. There was a party atmosphere but some

:02:17. > :02:18.believe the IFA spoiled the party by not inviting all the right people.

:02:19. > :02:21.It wasn't just footballers who were invited to a lap of honour

:02:22. > :02:23.around the new Windsor Park on Saturday night.

:02:24. > :02:25.Soap star Charlie Lawson, once of Coronation Street, was there.

:02:26. > :02:32.As did singer Gary Lightbody and goalkeeping great Pat Jennings.

:02:33. > :02:36.Two Paralympic stars who recently represented Team GB were there -

:02:37. > :02:42.But two runners who recently represented Team Ireland,

:02:43. > :02:45.Jason Smyth and Michael McKillop, were not on

:02:46. > :02:56.The standout thing was, who we represent?

:02:57. > :03:02.The two that are there compete for Great Britain and the

:03:03. > :03:05.Maybe that was me making an assumption but

:03:06. > :03:07.that was the question that I was asking.

:03:08. > :03:19.Michael McKillop also wasn't on the original invitation list. He was

:03:20. > :03:24.invited at the last minute but he said that was too late. I would love

:03:25. > :03:30.to have attended, I'm a massive sports fan and I've been to many

:03:31. > :03:34.Northern Ireland matches in the past and it's coming down to politics and

:03:35. > :03:37.who you compete for, and that's unfortunate because I have always

:03:38. > :03:41.talked about representing the island. But the IFA say it was not

:03:42. > :04:00.about politics but logistics. And the Sports Minister says that

:04:01. > :04:05.should be the end of the matter. I have no doubt that the IFA had no

:04:06. > :04:11.intention of causing offence to anybody, and we shouldn't allow this

:04:12. > :04:12.to overshadow a successful occasion. It was certainly a night like no

:04:13. > :04:24.other at Windsor Park. The IFA haven't just build a new

:04:25. > :04:29.stadium here, they are trying to build a completely new era, a

:04:30. > :04:34.cross-community era, and they have made enormous strides in recent

:04:35. > :04:39.years, I saw it myself when I was in France for the Euros and we saw it

:04:40. > :04:44.on Saturday when one of the VIPs invited was Martin McGuinness, but

:04:45. > :04:49.this controversy over the invitation that, accidental or not, will lead

:04:50. > :04:58.some to believe that the IFA still have some distance to go to create

:04:59. > :05:00.new completely cross there. -- that new completely cross-community here.

:05:01. > :05:02.Two men have been remanded in custody following a stabbing

:05:03. > :05:04.in Lisnaskea when three men were wounded.

:05:05. > :05:07.The incident happened in the early hours of Saturday morning.

:05:08. > :05:08.Our south-west reporter, Julian Fowler, was at

:05:09. > :05:11.The stabbings happened at Trasna Way in Lisnaksea.

:05:12. > :05:14.Three men aged in their 20s were attacked in the early hours

:05:15. > :05:18.They were taken to hospital for treatment.

:05:19. > :05:24.None are thought to have life-threatening injuries.

:05:25. > :05:30.Appearing at Enniskillen Magistrates' Court today were

:05:31. > :05:31.26-year-old Brendan McLaughlin of Tempo Road in Tempo.

:05:32. > :05:34.He faces two counts of attempted murder and one count of causing

:05:35. > :05:38.Another 26-year-old, Peter Smith of Sycamore Drive in Enniskillen,

:05:39. > :05:41.is accused of causing grievous bodily harm.

:05:42. > :05:44.Both men also face a charge of entering a house

:05:45. > :05:50.Brendan McLaughlin stood in the dock with his hand in a cast.

:05:51. > :05:54.His solicitor said his client had spent some time in hospital

:05:55. > :05:58.and a detective constable confirmed that he had obvious injuries

:05:59. > :06:03.The officer, who said she could connect both men

:06:04. > :06:07.to the charges, added that Mr McLaughlin had given two "no

:06:08. > :06:12.Neither defendant applied for bail and they were both

:06:13. > :06:22.A man in his 40s was stabbed in the head in Lurgan last night.

:06:23. > :06:26.He was attacked by two men on a pathway in the Old Portadown

:06:27. > :06:33.His injuries are described as non life-threatening.

:06:34. > :06:46.call for a fresh investigation into his killing.

:06:47. > :06:50.If you plan to head to Belfast for your Christmas shopping this

:06:51. > :06:55.year, you may not be able to get free city centre parking.

:06:56. > :06:58.Festive shoppers enjoyed the benefit last December.

:06:59. > :07:06.Our business correspondent, Julian O'Neill, has the details.

:07:07. > :07:15.Last year for the first time in four years Belfast City Council made 1500

:07:16. > :07:19.car parking spaces available for free on week nights and at weekends.

:07:20. > :07:25.The idea was to entice Christmas shoppers and help the cities

:07:26. > :07:29.retailers, but Translink says it clogged up the city, making it too

:07:30. > :07:34.congested and was counter-productive. It wants the

:07:35. > :07:38.council to shell proposals for free parking this year and along with the

:07:39. > :07:43.Department for Infrastructure has come up with some alternatives. In

:07:44. > :07:47.December Translink says it would reduce the cost of bus and train

:07:48. > :07:52.fares after the morning commute and extend the opening hours of its park

:07:53. > :07:57.and ride facilities. But this proposal has to clear to hurdles,

:07:58. > :08:01.first it needs the backing of a council committing on Wednesday and

:08:02. > :08:05.then if successful would go forward for full adoption by the Council at

:08:06. > :08:07.a monthly meeting in November. The First Minister Arlene Foster has

:08:08. > :08:10.paid tribute to the senior Orangeman Drew Nelson who has died

:08:11. > :08:13.after a short illness. Condolences have also been expressed

:08:14. > :08:17.by the Ulster Unionist Party, The current Grand Master has

:08:18. > :08:24.described Mr Nelson as perhaps Drew Nelson was regarded as one

:08:25. > :08:32.of the most articulate voices He was seen as a moderniser

:08:33. > :08:38.and a visionary within Orangeism. Before taking on a leading

:08:39. > :08:40.role within the Order, he'd been an Ulster Unionist

:08:41. > :08:42.councillor and former chair The Queens University graduate

:08:43. > :08:47.was a solicitor in the Dromore area He was also a former part-time

:08:48. > :08:52.member of But it was his profile as a leading

:08:53. > :08:57.Orangeman that put him He was a much sought-after public

:08:58. > :09:01.speaker on the institution and lobbied on its behalf amongst

:09:02. > :09:03.the political elite on both sides of the border,

:09:04. > :09:06.breaking new ground when he addressed the Irish

:09:07. > :09:11.Senate four years ago. Thank you very much for

:09:12. > :09:15.the invitation to come here today. He was also among Orange

:09:16. > :09:17.delegations that met SDLP politicians, the former

:09:18. > :09:20.Irish President Mary McAleese and the leader of the Catholic Church

:09:21. > :09:23.in Ireland at the time, He kept in touch with

:09:24. > :09:28.the institution's grassroots and was central to the parades

:09:29. > :09:31.issue, showing his support for the protest at Twaddell Avenue

:09:32. > :09:35.when it was still ongoing. I think he made a huge contribution

:09:36. > :09:40.in terms of its cultural direction and I think in restoring the

:09:41. > :09:48.reputation of the Order and looking The Order's Grand Secretary has been

:09:49. > :09:51.described by fellow Orangemen as its greatest ever advocate,

:09:52. > :10:03.with his greatest legacy Drew was a colossus within the

:10:04. > :10:14.institution. A lifelong Orangemen, dedicated to the Orange cause.

:10:15. > :10:16.His greatest legacy being the visit of Prince Charles

:10:17. > :10:20.at Sloan's House in County Armagh earlier this year, and the level

:10:21. > :10:22.of recognition that symbolised for the Institution.

:10:23. > :10:30.The Union flag is flying at half-mast in memory Drew Nelson.

:10:31. > :10:32.Those within the Orange Order and outside that are well aware that he

:10:33. > :10:34.will be hard to replace. The family of a former UDR solider

:10:35. > :10:37.who was murdered by the Real IRA in Londonderry 14 years ago

:10:38. > :10:39.are calling for a fresh David Caldwell's partner

:10:40. > :10:44.and daughter met the First Minister Arlene Foster

:10:45. > :10:47.and the Ulster Unionist leader Mike Nesbitt at Stormont today

:10:48. > :10:51.to seek their support Our political correspondent

:10:52. > :10:59.Enda McClafferty is at Stormont. Remind us of the circumstances

:11:00. > :11:10.of Mr Caldwell's murder. David Caldwell had retired from the

:11:11. > :11:15.UDR and was carrying out construction work on the Territorial

:11:16. > :11:21.Army base in the Waterside area in 2002 when he picked up a bomb hidden

:11:22. > :11:25.in a lunchbox. He suffered multiple injuries and died two was later in

:11:26. > :11:30.Altnagelvin the hospital. Police said he was a soft target working on

:11:31. > :11:34.an unmanned station with no security. There was widespread

:11:35. > :11:41.condemnation at the time about his murder, the real IRA admitted the

:11:42. > :11:45.attack and despite the fact a number of people were arrested in question,

:11:46. > :11:45.no one has been held accountable for his killing.

:11:46. > :11:50.Why do the family want a fresh investigation now?

:11:51. > :11:57.This stems from allegations which appeared in a book by a man who

:11:58. > :12:06.claims he was a soldier working on covert operations in Derry around

:12:07. > :12:08.the time of the murder. He details a surveillance operation during which

:12:09. > :12:11.they were a link they suspect they believe to be transporting a bomb.

:12:12. > :12:17.He said the car they were following. Alongside another vehicle and the

:12:18. > :12:20.bomb was moved from one card to another and they tailed the wrong

:12:21. > :12:25.car. They were not able to thought the attack and Mr Caldwell lost his

:12:26. > :12:29.life. That raises serious questions for the family in terms of what was

:12:30. > :12:35.known at the time. The author of the book refuses to divulge his real

:12:36. > :12:40.liberty, so this account cannot be tested, but the Caldwell family say

:12:41. > :12:44.there are many questions which need answered and they came to Stormont

:12:45. > :12:53.to lobby support from Arlene Foster and Mike Nesbitt. This is what Mr

:12:54. > :12:58.Caldwell's partner had to say. It is hurtful, some man knows details

:12:59. > :13:02.about VB's death and could not come forward before this. Will weep

:13:03. > :13:09.another 14 years to see who else will knock on the door? No, it has

:13:10. > :13:13.to come to a stop. Mr Nesbitt says there are questions that need

:13:14. > :13:17.answers around this and he has been in touch with the Chief Constable's

:13:18. > :13:23.office and has quoted paragraphs from this book and urged the Chief

:13:24. > :13:25.Constable to reopen the case. We await the response from the PSNI.

:13:26. > :13:30.This is BBC Newsline, and still ahead on the programme:

:13:31. > :13:34.We ask if history can be recreated in Hanover when Northern Ireland's

:13:35. > :13:37.footballer 's take on Germany. A trial has been told that a woman

:13:38. > :13:40.accused of killing a man and dumping his body in a bin tried

:13:41. > :13:43.to stop her co-accused carrying out Shaunean Boyle from Edenderry Park

:13:44. > :13:51.in Banbridge and Stephen Hughes, whose address was given

:13:52. > :13:55.as Maghaberry Prison, have been jointly charged with

:13:56. > :13:57.murdering Owen Creaney in Craigavon. Owen Creaney's body was discovered

:13:58. > :14:04.in a wheelie bin at this It took the 40-year-old two days

:14:05. > :14:10.to die from his injuries 29-year-old Stephen Hughes

:14:11. > :14:11.and Shaunean Boyle, Today the court heard transcripts

:14:12. > :14:16.of police interviews conducted with Shaunean Boyle

:14:17. > :14:20.following her arrest. During her first interview

:14:21. > :14:22.she refused to answer most of the questions but a pre-prepared

:14:23. > :14:27.statement was given to the police. In her statement to police,

:14:28. > :14:29.Shauneen Boyle said she tried to stop Stephen Hughes from hitting

:14:30. > :14:34.Owen Creaney but he pushed her away. She said at one point Stephen Hughes

:14:35. > :14:37.had a knife which she took off him She cleaned up Owen Creaney's face

:14:38. > :14:42.when he was lying in the hall but said this was not a case

:14:43. > :14:49.of her trying to cover anything up. Shaunean Boyle also told police

:14:50. > :14:52.she stopped Hughes from hitting Mr Creaney over the head

:14:53. > :14:54.with a dumbbell as he lay on his back after being punched,

:14:55. > :14:57.kicked, beaten and stamped on. She said both her and Stephen Hughes

:14:58. > :15:00.got Owen Creaney to his feet after the attack and carried him up

:15:01. > :15:03.the stairs, where he was placed When asked by police if she knew why

:15:04. > :15:10.Stephen Hughes had attacked Owen Creaney, Shaunean Boyle said

:15:11. > :15:14.it was because he thought that Owen Creaney knew the identity

:15:15. > :15:17.of a person who had trashed his I don't really think he went

:15:18. > :15:26.to go that hard on him." During police interviews,

:15:27. > :15:28.Shaunean Boyle also claimed that after attacking Owen Creaney,

:15:29. > :15:32.Stephen Hughes was walking up and down saying, "What have I done?"

:15:33. > :15:36.with his hands on his head. We're getting news this evening of a

:15:37. > :15:53.fish kill. More than 1600 fish

:15:54. > :15:55.are dead after a chemical spilled into a river in Co.

:15:56. > :15:57.Down. The Northern Ireland Environment

:15:58. > :15:59.Agency says there's been significant pollution of the Carrigs River

:16:00. > :16:01.which runs from Castwellan The Agency says it has traced

:16:02. > :16:05.the source and a clean-up We will have more on this story in

:16:06. > :16:14.our late bulletin. we're looking at mobile technology

:16:15. > :16:18.and the impact it's having On Friday, our reporter Mark Simpson

:16:19. > :16:22.gave up his smartphone He's taking a break from being

:16:23. > :16:32.connected online all the time. He's been asking commuters

:16:33. > :16:55.on their way into Belfast I've given up my smartphone for a

:16:56. > :17:00.week. You think you could do would? I could probably do a week but after

:17:01. > :17:05.that I would get a bit tetchy, there withdrawals and cravings would kick

:17:06. > :17:12.in. Probably not. I do everything on my phone. In your head its access to

:17:13. > :17:17.communication with people and you convince yourself it's OK to be on

:17:18. > :17:19.at all the time and then realising you're not communicating with

:17:20. > :17:26.anyone, you're just looking up information. How do you think you

:17:27. > :17:30.would cope with detox? I would probably be OK but I use it quite a

:17:31. > :17:40.lot. Have you ever had a detox? I have. I'm going through one. How's

:17:41. > :17:46.it going? Not good! You do still sees some people reading books or

:17:47. > :17:51.newspapers, and although most people seem to be on their smartphones,

:17:52. > :17:58.there are some exceptions like these two from Carrickfergus. People don't

:17:59. > :18:03.communicate any longer. Do you not feel you are missing out without a

:18:04. > :18:09.smartphone? No, I couldn't work it for a start. Would you not like to

:18:10. > :18:15.have some apps? I don't even know what apps is! She doesn't know what

:18:16. > :18:24.she's missing, or maybe she is one of the lucky ones.

:18:25. > :18:25.On tomorrow's programme we visit the McDonald

:18:26. > :18:28.family from Garvagh who have agreed to switch off their

:18:29. > :18:32.There are two teenage girls in that house - so it could be quite

:18:33. > :18:35.a sacrifice for them to be off-line with no internet for even a day

:18:36. > :18:38.The switch-off happens live on the programme tomorrow

:18:39. > :18:52.Now sport - and with the latest on the World Cup

:18:53. > :18:55.The Northern Ireland squad have travelled to Germany

:18:56. > :18:58.for their third World Cup qualifying tie in Group C.

:18:59. > :19:00.The two countries met in the group stage of Euro 2016

:19:01. > :19:03.of course, four months ago, when the Germans won one-nil.

:19:04. > :19:05.But after a four-nil victory at home to San Marino,

:19:06. > :19:07.which marked the opening of the new completed

:19:08. > :19:09.National Stadium, Michael O'Neill's side have travelled in good heart.

:19:10. > :19:24.Opening night at Northern Ireland football's new home. After years of

:19:25. > :19:30.planning and the odd hiccup, this stage was finally step. Steve Davis

:19:31. > :19:37.scored a first-half settler and a familiar face came off the bench to

:19:38. > :19:42.help Jamie Ward up like the gloss. Two goals for Kyle Lafferty, his

:19:43. > :19:48.second urgency provided by Davis, and the scoreline reflected the home

:19:49. > :19:54.side's dominance. You always want to entertain the fans to open a new

:19:55. > :19:57.stadium and our first time he says it has been completed, and

:19:58. > :20:03.thankfully we got the four goals and hopefully the fans will be happy. We

:20:04. > :20:09.will recover for two days and then on Monday be back at it. It will be

:20:10. > :20:15.a different, on Tuesday we may see little of the ball but we need a

:20:16. > :20:19.proper Northern Ireland performance to try to pick up a point. So after

:20:20. > :20:26.playing one of the worst teams in the world, Michael O'Neill and his

:20:27. > :20:30.players will face one of the best. Germany the world champions, have

:20:31. > :20:37.played 86 World Cup qualifiers and only two. If you take anything in

:20:38. > :20:42.this game it's a huge bonus, against the best international team in the

:20:43. > :20:47.world at this moment so it is good to come here having won the game on

:20:48. > :20:53.Saturday night. Taking anything from this game would be a major boost to

:20:54. > :21:08.hopes of finishing as runners-up behind Germany in the group.

:21:09. > :21:11.It has been a good few days for the Republic of Ireland.

:21:12. > :21:13.Martin O'Neill's side followed up the victory against Georgia

:21:14. > :21:16.with a 3-1 win away to Moldova, which leaves them well

:21:17. > :21:20.It is now seven points for a possible nine

:21:21. > :21:24.Everything looked to be going to plan when the visitors

:21:25. > :21:29.Only for a lapse in concentration to gift Moldova an equaliser.

:21:30. > :21:40.And he takes it! Could have maybe scored two or three before

:21:41. > :21:43.half-time, a bit of a head moment and suddenly it's parity at

:21:44. > :21:45.half-time, I think it should have been one.

:21:46. > :21:47.They responded to the setback, mainly thanks to James McClean.

:21:48. > :21:50.The West Brom forward finding the net twice in quick succession

:21:51. > :22:00.after the players were on the end of a stern talking-to at half time.

:22:01. > :22:09.a job here, my job is pretty important to me, players are

:22:10. > :22:13.important, players have to respond to things you say and they have

:22:14. > :22:19.responded the last couple of years. The games are tough, I think to try

:22:20. > :22:23.and read anything into it after two games is too early but we are

:22:24. > :22:25.delighted tonight, we have won away from home and were good.
