:00:00. > :00:11.We are back with the late news at 11pm.

:00:12. > :00:15.A young man remains critically ill after he was hit

:00:16. > :00:31.A section of the motorway has now reopened. Several cars were involved

:00:32. > :00:36.in this serious crash that led to the closure of the motorway in both

:00:37. > :00:43.directions overnight and into today. The 30-year-old driver lost his

:00:44. > :00:47.life. Two other men were hurt but their injuries are not thought to be

:00:48. > :00:53.life-threatening. The collision which led to the closure of this

:00:54. > :00:58.major road took place around 8:40pm last night. Police have appealed for

:00:59. > :01:02.any witnesses to come forward. Road closures were in place after

:01:03. > :01:08.Crossmaglen this morning after a hit and run incident this morning, a man

:01:09. > :01:17.was hit by a car, in his 20s, in a critical condition. A 19-year-old

:01:18. > :01:18.man seriously ill after he was stabbed in the back in Antrim last

:01:19. > :01:20.night. The incident happened

:01:21. > :01:23.after an altercation near the town centre at around 8.30pm.

:01:24. > :01:26.The police say a family group were chased by others

:01:27. > :01:36.on to the Dublin Road and assaulted. A man has been rescued after falling

:01:37. > :01:39.onto rocks on the County Down coast. He was flown by helicopter to

:01:40. > :01:48.hospital in Belfast. It was all change in education

:01:49. > :01:55.in 20-16, with DUP ministers taking over responsibility.

:01:56. > :01:56.As our education correspondent Robbie Meredith reports,

:01:57. > :02:08.Almost immediately, he changed his Sinn Fein predecessor's policy in

:02:09. > :02:13.the transfer tests, allowing primary schools to prepare pupils for them.

:02:14. > :02:18.The tests were based around where the curriculum is anyway so this is

:02:19. > :02:24.not a major diversion. -- divergence. There has always been

:02:25. > :02:28.the option to opt in or out. Everyone wants the best for their

:02:29. > :02:33.children but the best of giving of education. A shared future for

:02:34. > :02:34.everybody so you don't have a system of house and have-nots, of

:02:35. > :02:48.apartheid. Mr Weir also came under pressure

:02:49. > :03:00.from the teaching unions overpay. We are worth more than 0%. He responded

:03:01. > :03:10.by calling the striking action futile. SINGING

:03:11. > :03:16.Meanwhile, the education authority run into controversy over its

:03:17. > :03:19.decision to cut hours from pupils in bursaries, a move opposed by some

:03:20. > :03:27.parents, principles and the former Education Secretary live on BBC.

:03:28. > :03:32.They need to make sure they are providing the proper facilities for

:03:33. > :03:36.young people's educational needs. A review of those plans is ongoing.

:03:37. > :03:41.There was plenty to celebrate with rises in GCSE and a level results

:03:42. > :03:48.and primary school pupils declared the best in Europe in international

:03:49. > :03:52.maths tests. At the other end of the education scale, more young people

:03:53. > :03:56.from Northern Ireland are never entered university this year but

:03:57. > :04:00.paying for their education remains a problem. A document from Queen is

:04:01. > :04:02.obtained by the BBC, called for significant rises in government

:04:03. > :04:08.funding or student tuition fees. A windsurfer from Belfast says

:04:09. > :04:12.he's determined to gain the world record for the crossing

:04:13. > :04:15.from Ireland to Scotland. Chris Loughridge has already made

:04:16. > :04:17.the trip this summer but, as Will Leitch reports,

:04:18. > :04:29.there was a dispute over Dismayed meant a lot to Chris. He

:04:30. > :04:35.made his plans in June this year and got on with it. Scotland, here we

:04:36. > :04:40.come. There were challenging conditions on the crossing. It was

:04:41. > :04:43.very difficult to sail in the right direction because of the wind and we

:04:44. > :04:50.eventually worked out that if we sailed down the waves, that would

:04:51. > :04:54.push me down. The waves were coming from all directions that you were

:04:55. > :04:58.sailing along and then a wave would come in the opposite direction and I

:04:59. > :05:03.fell a few times because it was completely out of control. The

:05:04. > :05:08.arrival of the Scottish coast an hour and a half later clearly meant

:05:09. > :05:15.a lot. That is where we came out of the list and I thought, that will

:05:16. > :05:19.do. Nobody holds the world speed record for windsurfing the channel

:05:20. > :05:25.but Chris Wood to be getting it just yet. Guinness world records will not

:05:26. > :05:30.accept across the north where Chris did his, but only further south. The

:05:31. > :05:33.former record bid has now been rejected at the Guinness world

:05:34. > :05:39.records say they are sorry he was unsuccessful... But are unable to

:05:40. > :05:45.rectify the record. Will he have another go? I will definitely give

:05:46. > :05:49.it a go. He will be hoping for better weather.

:05:50. > :05:51.Time now for a look at what the weather has

:05:52. > :05:54.in store for the day ahead, here's Angie Philips.

:05:55. > :05:59.Not a bad day for walking off the excesses of Christmas,

:06:00. > :06:04.It was a dry day and that is because we have high pressure in charge,

:06:05. > :06:07.sitting on the near continent, keeping those weather fronts at bay,

:06:08. > :06:10.although we are at the periphery so some of those isobars gathering

:06:11. > :06:13.a little bit and that will bring the breeze up in places through this

:06:14. > :06:16.Particularly towards the north and west.

:06:17. > :06:18.A bit more cloud around the north-east parts as well,

:06:19. > :06:21.maybe threatening a spot of drizzle but generally speaking,

:06:22. > :06:23.it is dry and fairly clear still for parts of the east

:06:24. > :06:26.and south-east and this is where will see our lowest temperatures,

:06:27. > :06:30.getting close to freezing in some rural areas, and that will give

:06:31. > :06:35.So, a chilly start in places tomorrow but a decent day coming up,

:06:36. > :06:37.a lot of dry and fairly bright weather, though during the morning,

:06:38. > :06:40.there could still be a fair amount of cloud across parts

:06:41. > :06:42.of the north and west. That breeze as well.

:06:43. > :06:44.The best of any hazy sunshine to the south-east.

:06:45. > :06:47.That band of cloud and brisk winds extends up into Scotland,

:06:48. > :06:50.bits and pieces of drizzly rain towards the north west as well.

:06:51. > :06:53.Dry and bright across the Republic and it brightens up across much

:06:54. > :06:55.of England and Wales after a frosty start.

:06:56. > :06:58.But there will be fog in places as well, which could be slow

:06:59. > :06:59.to clear, particularly across the Midlands,

:07:00. > :07:02.eastern England. Could have an impact on the airports

:07:03. > :07:04.if it does linger and it will also feel quite cold.

:07:05. > :07:07.But it the sunshine, getting up to 7 to 9 degrees.

:07:08. > :07:10.For Northern Ireland in the afternoon, even the north

:07:11. > :07:12.and west will be seeing some bright spells developing.

:07:13. > :07:15.Highs getting up to around 7 or 8 degrees, with those bright

:07:16. > :07:21.I think over the next few days, offered a lot of cloud

:07:22. > :07:25.in the forecast, a bit more breeze but mainly dry and the temperatures
