:00:12. > :00:15.This is BBC Newsline and these are the headlines

:00:16. > :00:19.The attempted murder of a police officer in Belfast.

:00:20. > :00:27.The Chief Constable describes the gun attack as reckless.

:00:28. > :00:34.The other members of the community where it a massive risk as well and

:00:35. > :00:35.the people who did this did not care whether or who they murdered last

:00:36. > :00:35.night. Michelle O'Neill is the new Northern

:00:36. > :00:44.leader of Sinn Fein Whenever I was growing up in Tyrone

:00:45. > :00:48.as the teenager, if anyone had ever said to need that some stage in the

:00:49. > :00:54.future I would be leading Sinn Fein in the north I probably would not

:00:55. > :00:57.have believed them. What more do we know about Michelle O'Neill? I have

:00:58. > :00:58.come to her home village in County Tyrone.

:00:59. > :01:00.The biggest local manufacturer of wood pellets here shared

:01:01. > :01:02.information about tariff changes in the RHI scheme before

:01:03. > :01:06.A man who sexually assaulted young girls in a public swimming pool

:01:07. > :01:10.Ireland look to some new faces in the Six Nations as Ulster

:01:11. > :01:14.And we've got some rain on the way later tonight,

:01:15. > :01:23.but that should keep the frost away. I'll be back with a full forecast.

:01:24. > :01:26.Last night's gun attack on a police patrol was at a busy petrol

:01:27. > :01:31.One of the officers was wounded in the arm and is said to be

:01:32. > :01:35.The Chief Constable has described the shooting as reckless.

:01:36. > :01:37.In a statement released in the last few minutes,

:01:38. > :01:40.the police say they've recovered several bullets from other cars that

:01:41. > :01:58.Images taken in the immediate aftermath of the shooting. Packed

:01:59. > :02:02.with cars underlines just how busy the garage was at the time.

:02:03. > :02:07.Automatic gunfire was spread across the forecourt, first aid equipment

:02:08. > :02:11.still the ground. This is the security operation afterwords. A

:02:12. > :02:15.police officer with his weapon aimed towards the main road. The policeman

:02:16. > :02:19.was hit twice in the arm, he had an operation this morning and will

:02:20. > :02:24.require further surgery. The Chief Constable spoke to the media shortly

:02:25. > :02:35.after visiting him in hospital. We as police officers are citizens in

:02:36. > :02:37.uniform. This officer was a member of the community. He was attacked

:02:38. > :02:40.but other members of the community were at risk as well. The people who

:02:41. > :02:43.did this did not care who they murdered last night, albeit it was

:02:44. > :02:47.clear that the attack was aimed at the police officers on duty. The

:02:48. > :02:53.shooting happened at around 730 last night. The area was still busy with

:02:54. > :02:57.people, among them this eyewitness. We were coming around the corner and

:02:58. > :03:01.shots were going off. We didn't know it was shot first, we thought it was

:03:02. > :03:11.fireworks. It was consistent and I knew something was wrong. The

:03:12. > :03:13.officer's body armour might have saved him from something more

:03:14. > :03:15.serious. Dissident republican I being blamed. It was also described

:03:16. > :03:19.as reckless. This threat against officers has been severe for some

:03:20. > :03:22.time. We cannot be complacent about the nature of this type of attack

:03:23. > :03:28.but it does concern me that others are trying to take advantage of the

:03:29. > :03:32.political instability taking year at Stormont. A short time ago this

:03:33. > :03:36.image was released of what the police think was the card used in

:03:37. > :03:39.the attack. They are appealing for witnesses. -- car.

:03:40. > :03:41.Our home affairs correspondent Vincent Kearney is with me now.

:03:42. > :03:43.The officers were among customers, including children.

:03:44. > :03:46.How fortunate were all in that station?

:03:47. > :03:56.They were very fortunate indeed. This is a very busy forecourt, lots

:03:57. > :04:00.of cards. These weren't small calibre handguns. High velocity

:04:01. > :04:06.shots fired from an assault rifle. When they hit the target, they do an

:04:07. > :04:10.incredible amount of damage. The police have said the body armour

:04:11. > :04:15.worn by this officer was sent off for forensic investigation and it

:04:16. > :04:19.was said that the bullet hit the armour. He was very fortunate

:04:20. > :04:20.indeed. It does an incredible amount of damage these bullets.

:04:21. > :04:23.The Justice Minister is concerned this attack may be being linked

:04:24. > :04:29.What's the police service's assessment of that?

:04:30. > :04:34.The police have always been concerned dissidents will try to

:04:35. > :04:38.fill the political vacuum. We are not working on the bases this was

:04:39. > :04:42.something organised quickly on the spot due to the collapse of the

:04:43. > :04:47.assembly. We have to remember this is the series of attacks in Belfast

:04:48. > :04:52.in recent years. There have been attacks and attempted attacks using

:04:53. > :04:55.AK-47 rifles, home-made rocket launchers, home-made bombs, it is

:04:56. > :04:58.the latest in a pattern rather than a one-off. The Chief Constable

:04:59. > :05:02.George Hamilton said he does not believe this is opportunistic that

:05:03. > :05:05.something well planned. Those who carried out this attack are likely

:05:06. > :05:09.to have been watching these police officers for some time looking for

:05:10. > :05:14.signs. The properly carried out some kind of dry run to check afterwords.

:05:15. > :05:19.Not the kind of attack planned very quickly in response to what happened

:05:20. > :05:23.in Stormont in the past week or two. Police will be concerned that this

:05:24. > :05:25.has been in the planning for quite some time. Thank you.

:05:26. > :05:27.Sinn Fein's Michelle O'Neill said today she is "following in

:05:28. > :05:30.The current Health Minister is replacing Martin McGuinness

:05:31. > :05:32.as the party's leader north of the border.

:05:33. > :05:35.At a news conference this afternoon she said she had never been afraid

:05:36. > :05:37.of a challenge and never afraid to act.

:05:38. > :05:48.BBC Newsline's Mark Simpson takes at look at the new leader.

:05:49. > :05:53.His report contains flash photography.

:05:54. > :06:00.A new generation and a new era for Sinn Fein. The leadership role of

:06:01. > :06:05.the assembly and to Michelle O'Neill. It is a big day and for me

:06:06. > :06:09.when I was growing up in Tyrone as a teenager, if anyone had ever said to

:06:10. > :06:12.me that at some stage in the future I would be leading Sinn Fein in the

:06:13. > :06:17.north, I would not have believed them. I have worked with Martin

:06:18. > :06:20.throughout all of my adult life. I have no doubt I am following in the

:06:21. > :06:29.footsteps of the political giant. The man is a legend. He said if you

:06:30. > :06:37.words himself. I haven't gone away, you know.

:06:38. > :06:45.CHEERING I am overjoyed she is our leader and

:06:46. > :06:46.overjoyed she is my leader. She will have my fullest wholehearted

:06:47. > :06:48.dedicated and committed support. Michelle O'Neill knows that

:06:49. > :06:50.all eyes are on her now. Her life may never quite

:06:51. > :06:55.be the same again. She worked her way through the ranks

:06:56. > :06:58.of Sinn Fein at Dungannon Council Here she is ten years ago arriving

:06:59. > :07:11.in her new office at Stormont. My two kids are 13 and eight and

:07:12. > :07:15.loving that I'm coming here today. All excited this morning and up

:07:16. > :07:17.early this morning for money's first day at work.

:07:18. > :07:19.She later became Agriculture Minister and clearly impressed

:07:20. > :07:23.So much so that she was given the Health Ministry

:07:24. > :07:26.at the last election, a spot she seemed to relish.

:07:27. > :07:36.I am just delighted. She says she is also very proud to come from County

:07:37. > :07:40.Tyrone and this is her home village. People in the village who know her

:07:41. > :07:46.and let's leave that everyone does say she has three interests, her

:07:47. > :07:50.family, the local GAA club and of course politics. She comes from a

:07:51. > :07:57.strong Republican family in east Tyrone and as popular here. All the

:07:58. > :08:05.best. Sinn Fein councillor runs the local pub. There is no better person

:08:06. > :08:13.for the job. I think Arlene Foster needs to watch yourself. Michelle is

:08:14. > :08:14.very capable. When it comes to crisis management, Michelle O'Neill

:08:15. > :08:17.now faces her biggest challenge. The biggest manufacturer of wood

:08:18. > :08:20.pellets in Northern Ireland has confirmed that it shared information

:08:21. > :08:24.about proposed tariff changes in the RHI scheme two months before

:08:25. > :08:29.they were officially announced. Balcas, based in Ballinamallard,

:08:30. > :08:33.County Fermanagh said there was "nothing

:08:34. > :08:36.sinister" in the move. It said it was not aware at any

:08:37. > :08:39.stage that the information it had Here's our agriculture

:08:40. > :08:55.and environment correspondent, Company-mac is a big player in the

:08:56. > :09:00.wood pellet business and makes and sells 150,000 tonnes of boiler fuel

:09:01. > :09:05.every year. In County Fermanagh and Scotland. It is an industry leader.

:09:06. > :09:09.Now it's emerged in July 2015 it circulated information that had been

:09:10. > :09:13.given about proposed changes to the tariff several months before they

:09:14. > :09:16.were publicly announced. Last week, the permanent Secretary of the

:09:17. > :09:20.Department for the economy doctor Andrew McCormick said e-mails he had

:09:21. > :09:31.been sent anonymously should the industry knew in advance about the

:09:32. > :09:33.changes. He said that information appear to have come from officials

:09:34. > :09:35.in his department. The consequences are very serious because this shows

:09:36. > :09:38.there was premature awareness of the potential for the tariff to be

:09:39. > :09:43.reduced and the message went within the sector quick. The BBC has seen

:09:44. > :09:48.two e-mails apparently circulated within the renewables industry in

:09:49. > :09:50.July 20 15. Today, company-mac confirmed one of them had been

:09:51. > :09:53.written by a member of its management at a time when

:09:54. > :09:58.departmental officials were working on plans to make the scheme less

:09:59. > :10:01.profitable. In the e-mail, the manager passed on information to one

:10:02. > :10:04.renewables company which apparently came from another and were said to

:10:05. > :10:20.have spoken to a senior departmental official. The Balcas manager said...

:10:21. > :10:21.Referring to the possibility of a two tier tariff, the manager

:10:22. > :10:37.added... Following questions from the BBC

:10:38. > :10:41.about the e-mail, Balcas and a statement this morning and said it

:10:42. > :10:44.was passing on information from the department that was responsible in a

:10:45. > :10:50.scheme that had been heavily promoted. The company underlined at

:10:51. > :10:53.no time was that information presented as confidential.

:10:54. > :11:04.Acknowledging that serious error in the scheme led to the potential for

:11:05. > :11:07.abuse, it said... We asked the Department for the economy if any

:11:08. > :11:11.action had been taken in respect of its official named in the e-mail. A

:11:12. > :11:12.spokesperson said as the issue was under investigation it would be

:11:13. > :11:14.inappropriate to comment. Assembly Members have been debating

:11:15. > :11:17.the Economy Minister's plan to cut the projected ?490 million loss

:11:18. > :11:20.to the public purse Our political editor Mark Devenport

:11:21. > :11:27.is at Parliament Buildings. Is there any conclusion

:11:28. > :11:29.yet to the debate about the renewable heat scheme,

:11:30. > :11:38.Mark? No. This was a scheme at the start

:11:39. > :11:40.debating last week when they thought the Secretary of State Michael

:11:41. > :11:46.Stoney assembly quickly. They got extra time and were able to adjourn,

:11:47. > :11:51.come back to the debate. Simon Hamilton's ideas today. They started

:11:52. > :11:56.at half past 12 today. During the course of the day we heard the

:11:57. > :12:01.special adviser came up with the basic idea of cutting the cost of

:12:02. > :12:04.this scheme which is projected to lose ?490 million but will be a lot

:12:05. > :12:08.less of the adopted these regulations. We heard from the

:12:09. > :12:14.former minister Jonathan Bell who was talking about special advisers,

:12:15. > :12:19.he was accusing DUP rises of delaying the closure of the scheme.

:12:20. > :12:23.He said the study about the senior GDP special adviser Timothy

:12:24. > :12:28.Johnston. Members on the DV benchers to my left kept open because Timothy

:12:29. > :12:33.Johnston's brother was installing the boilers. I am not getting into

:12:34. > :12:37.who is what family member was in Stormont. If these members to the

:12:38. > :12:41.left have information they are not going to try and felt it through me,

:12:42. > :12:46.they've got to stand up and tell it like I had to stand up and tell it.

:12:47. > :12:50.We got a complete denial from the DUP that allegation from their

:12:51. > :12:53.former minister. They said Timothy Johnston's brother does not and

:12:54. > :12:58.never has installed boilers, does not reckon the sector and has not

:12:59. > :13:01.been involved in any renewable heat incentives. We challenged Mr Bell to

:13:02. > :13:01.produce a shred of evidence outside the chamber.

:13:02. > :13:04.DUP figures have previously declared interests in the scheme.

:13:05. > :13:11.What's the development this evening with the Ulster Unionists?

:13:12. > :13:15.Over the weekend, Jim Wells said four of his relatives were

:13:16. > :13:22.recipients in the scheme. Tonight the Ulster Unionist Party said the

:13:23. > :13:26.aunt and uncle of the MLA were also recipients in their family business

:13:27. > :13:28.and they said a former Ella -- MLA had a wood pellet boiler in his

:13:29. > :13:29.family business as well. The new Sinn Fein leader,

:13:30. > :13:32.how is her appointment likely to go down with Sinn Fein,

:13:33. > :13:41.their supporters and other It certainly seemed to energise the

:13:42. > :13:45.Sinn Fein supporters gathered in the gallery here at Stormont when the

:13:46. > :13:48.announcement was made. It was presented as a generational change.

:13:49. > :13:52.It will be a challenging time over the next three teams first Michelle

:13:53. > :13:55.O'Neill she will have to go and fight an election campaign and it

:13:56. > :13:58.will be interesting to see how the party divvies up the various demands

:13:59. > :14:05.between manifesto launches and debates between her and other senior

:14:06. > :14:07.members. Tonight another women party leader of the Alliance party

:14:08. > :14:12.congratulated Michelle O'Neill saying she trusts she is willing to

:14:13. > :14:15.work with others and see stability restored in these institutions.

:14:16. > :14:19.Michelle O'Neill answered, thank you, I am committed to making the

:14:20. > :14:23.institution worked on the basis of equality, respect and integrity.

:14:24. > :14:25.You're watching BBC Newsline and still ahead:

:14:26. > :14:27.The families of three children with a muscle wasting disease

:14:28. > :14:38.want to know why they haven't access to a potentially life changing drug.

:14:39. > :14:40.A man has appeared in court charged with murdering a woman

:14:41. > :14:45.Anita Downey was found dead at a house on Friday morning.

:14:46. > :14:51.Louise Cullen reports from the court.

:15:06. > :15:08.spoke only to confirm his name and that he understood the charge.

:15:09. > :15:11.The solicitor told the court there would be no bail application today.

:15:12. > :15:13.The police were called to a house in Toberhewny Hall

:15:14. > :15:15.in Lurgan in the early hours of Friday morning.

:15:16. > :15:18.There, the body of Anita Downey was found and a murder

:16:16. > :16:17.moved to the town two years ago to improve his English.

:16:18. > :16:20.Here's our south-west reporter Julian Fowler.

:16:21. > :16:24.This is the man who abused three young girls while they were

:16:25. > :16:27.swimming, arriving at court accompanied by his sisters.

:16:28. > :16:31.The parents of his victims were also in court to see him sentenced.

:16:32. > :16:33.As one mother told me afterwards, "He came

:16:34. > :16:39.in here as Cristian Diaz, he's going out as a registered sex offender."

:16:40. > :16:42.He touched the children, who were aged nine, ten and 11,

:16:43. > :16:44.in three separate incidents two years ago at the Lakeland

:16:59. > :17:03.distressed and upset at what had happened to them."

:17:04. > :17:05.A defence lawyer said that Diaz had described what had happened

:17:06. > :17:09."as the greatest mistake of my life."

:17:10. > :17:11.Diaz was given a 14-month sentence, half to be served in prison,

:17:12. > :17:16.and was put on the sex offenders register for ten years.

:17:17. > :17:18.The parents of the three children watched as Diaz

:17:30. > :17:32.to come forward and should be very proud of themselves in helping

:17:33. > :17:42.to stop further harm to members of the public.

:17:43. > :17:45.An inquest is being held into the death of an 81-year-old

:18:18. > :18:22.the year -- care home for six months. At the time of her death,

:18:23. > :18:25.here at the home was provided by the Saint John of God Association. The

:18:26. > :18:31.inquest was told on a number of occasions Kathleen Fegan was seen

:18:32. > :18:35.smoking in areas she wasn't meant to be including her bedroom. The

:18:36. > :18:39.inquest also heard that she burnt her underwear and trousers and left

:18:40. > :18:42.cigarette buts burning in her bedroom then. Despite this, she was

:18:43. > :18:47.regularly given more than one cigarette at a time and a lighter.

:18:48. > :18:53.Giving evidence today was brother Michael who was acting manager at

:19:01. > :19:05.about the dangers of smoking in a bedroom with a woman who had

:19:06. > :19:09.dementia. Brother told the court he believed all steps were taken to

:19:16. > :19:20.her brother replied no. -- brother Newman replied, no, she was not able

:19:30. > :19:32.Another child has already started the treatment, which at present

:19:47. > :20:00.She's one of four children in Northern Ireland who have it.

:20:01. > :20:11.She has a really tough life. If she takes a cold, it could kill her. She

:20:12. > :20:13.did take pneumonia. She was in hospital a couple of weeks ago and

:20:14. > :20:19.was really bad. She just trips on. After years of trials,

:20:20. > :20:22.a drug's become available Nusinersen arrived in
