:00:28. > :00:31.The DUP MP Jim Shannon breaks down during a legacy debate

:00:32. > :00:44.It might seem that one life is worth more than another. It's not. It

:00:45. > :00:46.never will be. The safety warning for owners

:00:47. > :00:49.of certain tumble dryers - Northern Ireland's air link with

:00:50. > :00:52.the US is being restored next year. Johnny Sexton gets the nod over

:00:53. > :00:56.Paddy Jackson for Ireland's After the rain

:00:57. > :01:00.and strong winds of Storm Doris. Tonight we have a weather

:01:01. > :01:07.warning for ice. Around 1,000 homes

:01:08. > :01:13.are still without power, as the Storm Doris clear-up

:01:14. > :01:16.operation continues this evening. Hundreds of trees were brought down,

:01:17. > :01:34.and flights and ferries experienced Storm Doris arrived early sleeping

:01:35. > :01:40.in from the West leaving a trail of destruction. It hit eastern counties

:01:41. > :01:45.around rush hour. In Belfast, major roads were blocked by fallen trees.

:01:46. > :01:50.High winds uprooted hundreds of trees across Northern Ireland. Not

:01:51. > :01:59.even the dark ages in County Antrim, made famous by Game Of Thrones

:02:00. > :02:06.escaped. Flights, trains, ferry services all faced disruption as the

:02:07. > :02:10.winds peaked. A top speed of over 100 mph was recorded on the south

:02:11. > :02:14.coast. The worst of the storm passed through by late morning but the

:02:15. > :02:20.clear up operation has taken most of the day. This team of tree surgeons

:02:21. > :02:26.has removed 30 trees in Belfast alone. Most of the fallen trees were

:02:27. > :02:31.weakened by disease or fungus. The tree is really quite a spongy,

:02:32. > :02:36.falling apart. There is no strength to it. Everything we've dealt with

:02:37. > :02:42.has been structurally defective or the tree has been attacked by a

:02:43. > :02:47.pathogen, leading to decay and therefore the tree has been weak.

:02:48. > :02:54.Disruption as well to electricity supplies. The vast majority have now

:02:55. > :02:58.been restored with crews working from first thing this morning in

:02:59. > :03:04.difficult conditions. Access can be a problem where we have debris lying

:03:05. > :03:09.on roads. It is getting the equipment onto the ground. The

:03:10. > :03:14.ground is very damp with some flooding so we have to be careful.

:03:15. > :03:18.We have to be mindful of health and safety. It does take time to get

:03:19. > :03:24.crews onto the ground to carry out repairs. Storm Doris may have left

:03:25. > :03:32.but there is another weather warning for tomorrow morning. This time for

:03:33. > :03:33.ice. Winter is not over yet. We will have a full forecast later in the

:03:34. > :03:34.programme. A 63-year-old man struck

:03:35. > :03:36.by an empty van in Larne as he was withdrawing money

:03:37. > :03:39.from an ATM, has died. Our north east reporter Sara Girvin

:03:40. > :03:50.has been to the scene. The man was using this ATM just

:03:51. > :03:55.before 8:30am yesterday morning when he was hit by a van. The vehicle had

:03:56. > :04:00.been parked on Main Street but it rolled backwards and struck him. He

:04:01. > :04:03.was taken to husband with a suspected fractured leg but died

:04:04. > :04:10.this morning. Robert Reid was working in the butchers next door

:04:11. > :04:15.when it happened. I heard a man screaming in pain. We went to see

:04:16. > :04:19.what was happening. They few other people from cars outside the shop

:04:20. > :04:25.had run to his help. We then phoned for an ambulance. People are shocked

:04:26. > :04:32.that somebody could be knocked down and buy the next day. It's horrible.

:04:33. > :04:35.Police have asked anyone who saw a blue Vauxhall van parked here on

:04:36. > :04:38.Main Street yesterday morning or who witnessed the incident themselves to

:04:39. > :04:41.get in touch. The DUP MP Jim Shannon

:04:42. > :04:43.has cried in the House of Commons during a debate

:04:44. > :04:48.about the prosecution of security The Strangford MP says victims

:04:49. > :04:55.of the Troubles want "closure and justice" and he referred

:04:56. > :04:58.to the death of his cousin murdered by the IRA -

:04:59. > :05:00.and members of the UDR Here's our Political

:05:01. > :05:10.Correspondent Stephen Walker. UDR man Kenneth Smith was murdered

:05:11. > :05:14.by the IRA back in 1971. Today his cousin Jim Shannon recalled his

:05:15. > :05:21.death and the killing of his friends in April 19 90. I want justice for

:05:22. > :05:27.the four UDR men. I knew three of them personally. And yet there is no

:05:28. > :05:34.multi-million pound investigation available for that. There seems to

:05:35. > :05:38.be more in the present this idea that one life is worth more than

:05:39. > :05:53.another. It is not and it will never be.

:05:54. > :05:59.Ian Paisley MP said that Baron McGrory should not take part in any

:06:00. > :06:07.investigation because of his previously is. He should resign now.

:06:08. > :06:13.I don't agree. The public prosecution service has pursued

:06:14. > :06:18.prosecutions for serious terrorist crimes during the troubles and

:06:19. > :06:21.continues to do so. Sir Gerald Howarth also claimed that the DPP

:06:22. > :06:29.was trying to stop journalists reporting his work. The DPP has

:06:30. > :06:34.issued an effective fatwa to news organisations across the United

:06:35. > :06:43.Kingdom that if they have the temerity to make any criticism of Mr

:06:44. > :06:51.O'Gara, Mr McCrory, that they will be served with legal proceedings. A

:06:52. > :07:03.public prosecution service statement said...

:07:04. > :07:09.This debate was called by the DUP who believe too much focus has been

:07:10. > :07:16.given to the prosecution of eggs security force members compared to

:07:17. > :07:20.former paramilitaries but this month, figures obtained by the BBC

:07:21. > :07:25.has shown that investigations into killings by the Army account for

:07:26. > :07:29.about 30% of its legacy workload. We must ensure that there is fairness

:07:30. > :07:34.and balance in all of this. The Catholic Bishop of Derry has

:07:35. > :07:36.offered to meet the bombers who tried to kill a police officer

:07:37. > :07:40.at his home in Culmore. The bomb exploded while the army

:07:41. > :07:43.was trying to make it safe. A neighbour of the officer

:07:44. > :07:45.says many young children Here's our North-West

:07:46. > :07:56.reporter, Keiron Tourish. At first glance, it looks like any

:07:57. > :08:00.residential area but the damage on the tarmac reveals how close this

:08:01. > :08:07.bomb was to the family home of a police officer. The PS and I say

:08:08. > :08:12.this attack could have resulted in death or serious injury. Earlier, a

:08:13. > :08:17.team of friends in offices was back at the scene. They covered a wide

:08:18. > :08:29.area in search of fragments from the Bomb. Neighbours who, like the

:08:30. > :08:33.policeman, had young children in the house were appalled at the attack.

:08:34. > :08:36.We were looking after the grandchildren while their parents

:08:37. > :08:43.worked and they were here. Their lives were put at risk and all the

:08:44. > :08:48.children in the area. Their lives are disrupted. Everybody's is. It's

:08:49. > :08:53.inconvenient and it's a disgrace and I feel for the poor family involved.

:08:54. > :08:56.They've lived here about 15 years. I'm angry because they put everybody

:08:57. > :09:04.at risk, not just the people targeted. I think an attack on any

:09:05. > :09:07.police officer is an attack on all police officers regardless of what

:09:08. > :09:17.their background is. I think we nearly -- need to take the message

:09:18. > :09:29.seriously that we need to get behind the police service. The Bishop of

:09:30. > :09:34.Derry said that they would not be deflected by the bombers. It was

:09:35. > :09:40.reckless and where people could have been badly injured to do what they

:09:41. > :09:45.have done is outrageous. It's a very dangerous weapon used in a heavily

:09:46. > :09:50.built-up area with children and adults of all ages. It's very

:09:51. > :09:57.irresponsible. I'd love to meet with them and show them there is a better

:09:58. > :10:00.way to a better society. To use this weapon in this built-up area or

:10:01. > :10:05.anywhere else is not part of the way forward. Police will be studying

:10:06. > :10:09.CCTV images in an attempt to track down the bombers.

:10:10. > :10:12.First Trust Bank says its decision to close half its branches is due

:10:13. > :10:31.Around 130 staff will be made redundant when the bank closes 15

:10:32. > :10:46.Five years ago First trust had a network of 40 branches. It will be

:10:47. > :10:52.soon down to just two. Branch usage has fallen by 40%. Mobile app usage

:10:53. > :10:56.has increased and we have two responded to those changes. We have

:10:57. > :11:00.carried out a strategic review of our business over the last 18 months

:11:01. > :11:08.to come up with a sustainable strategy for the future. The bank is

:11:09. > :11:12.closing for branches in Belfast. The other closures are in Antrim,

:11:13. > :11:23.Armagh, Banbridge, Cookstown, president link, Derry, Downpatrick,

:11:24. > :11:28.Newtownards, Portadown and Strabane. Outside this branch, disappointment

:11:29. > :11:35.among customers. It's really bad. Sad. It's a nice branch to go into.

:11:36. > :11:41.Sad for those boys working in it. It's capitalism at its work. It's

:11:42. > :11:46.disappointing because it's handy. The bank says it is investing in

:11:47. > :11:52.mobile and online products, an area in which it has lagged behind but it

:11:53. > :11:55.does. It has also announced a partnership with the Post Office to

:11:56. > :12:01.allow customers to do some banking there. But a spokesman said that

:12:02. > :12:07.this couldn't replace fully a branch. A lot of customers haven't

:12:08. > :12:13.migrated to digital banking. There is the author of the post office and

:12:14. > :12:19.available but that is just for processing cash. They can't provide

:12:20. > :12:22.independent financial advice. This is not just an issue for First

:12:23. > :12:29.trust. All the banks have been closing branches. In fact, since

:12:30. > :12:31.2010, one in three branches has closed. That's a trend that would be

:12:32. > :12:32.reversed. A hearing has been continuing

:12:33. > :12:35.at the High Court into the Economy Minister's plan

:12:36. > :12:37.to publish the names More than 500 recipients

:12:38. > :12:42.of the controversial subsidy are involved in a High Court

:12:43. > :12:55.challenge against Simon Hamilton. The renewable heat Association

:12:56. > :12:59.claims the ministers plan was to divert attention from ministerial

:13:00. > :13:02.responsibility for the scheme. A lawyer for the minister said that

:13:03. > :13:10.there is no evidential basis for Simon Hamilton to be acting

:13:11. > :13:16.capriciously. He said the minister acted in the interests of

:13:17. > :13:24.accountability and transparency. An investigation was told about the

:13:25. > :13:28.financial consequences. The repercussions were seismic and the

:13:29. > :13:35.fallout so grave that a public enquiry had to be established. The

:13:36. > :13:40.court heard that the scheme had overspent costing taxpayers almost

:13:41. > :13:45.half a billion pounds. The hearing was also told that any media

:13:46. > :13:49.publishing confidential details were at risk of committing contempt of

:13:50. > :13:53.court. A judgment is expected next week.

:13:54. > :13:55.Do you have a Creda, Hotpoint or Indesit tumble dryer?

:13:56. > :14:06.Have you checked to see if it is safe to use?

:14:07. > :14:09.Whirlpool, which manufactures the dryers has now advised millions

:14:10. > :14:12.of owners to unplug their machines and not to use them

:14:13. > :14:15.if they are listed as one of the faulty models.

:14:16. > :14:17.Our reporter Ita Dungan has been looking at exactly what you need

:14:18. > :14:19.to do to make sure your home is safe.

:14:20. > :14:30.It was a tumble dryer waiting to be repaired that caused this fire at a

:14:31. > :14:34.London tower block in August. People were assured their drivers were

:14:35. > :14:39.still safe to use as long as they were supervised. The guidance has

:14:40. > :14:42.now changed. Following advice from trading standards, the advice is

:14:43. > :14:59.now... What machines are affected? Creda,

:15:00. > :15:05.Indesit, and Hotpoint dries fought between 2004 and 2015 could have the

:15:06. > :15:12.dangers fault. You need to check the back for the serial number and then

:15:13. > :15:16.go on to the Whirlpool website. You need your model number and serial

:15:17. > :15:22.number and the website will tell you whether you're machine is faulty. If

:15:23. > :15:27.it is, the advice is, don't use it until it has been repaired. You

:15:28. > :15:32.might be waiting to five months for someone to come and repair it. This

:15:33. > :15:40.Belfast woman wasn't happy with the service. They told me to supervise

:15:41. > :15:46.it. It's in the garage which isn't realistic. I tended not to use it.

:15:47. > :15:51.They told me to pay my own money to buy another one. I may think I

:15:52. > :15:58.should get a free one. The advice is don't be tempted to use it. Doing

:15:59. > :16:03.the kids school uniforms on Sunday night, don't do it. If it goes on

:16:04. > :16:08.fire, you are not covered by house insurance and could be liable for

:16:09. > :16:12.costs. Do the checks to ensure it is safe. Good advice.

:16:13. > :16:15.Northern Ireland's air link with the US is on its way back,

:16:16. > :16:18.with a new carrier promising low fares to airports near

:16:19. > :16:25.Norwegian Air has also announced it'll operate from Dublin and Cork.

:16:26. > :16:27.There's a boost too for City of Derry Airport,

:16:28. > :16:31.as our business correspondent Julian O'Neill explains.

:16:32. > :16:39.A new Boeing aircraft will soon be flying under the colours of

:16:40. > :16:44.Norwegian air from Belfast International. Five services per

:16:45. > :16:48.week begin in July with the low-cost operator using smaller regional

:16:49. > :16:55.airports about 60 miles from Boston and New York. I am very happy that

:16:56. > :17:01.we can continue the services into the US will stop Belfast definitely

:17:02. > :17:10.needs services into the US. So after losing United, the airport is buoyed

:17:11. > :17:15.up by a new connection. United had complained about profitability but

:17:16. > :17:20.it left an opportunity. United weren't able to export the gap in

:17:21. > :17:25.the market. These guys, low-cost, high-quality with the right aircraft

:17:26. > :17:37.and right routes. City of Derry airport is now getting a lift as

:17:38. > :17:39.well. A ?4 million of governments as -- government subsidy has allowed a

:17:40. > :17:50.new operator to take over from Ryanair. It will unable to get a

:17:51. > :17:57.full day of business in the capital. We're very optimistic the future.

:17:58. > :18:01.All of these routes are getting financial help of varying degrees.

:18:02. > :18:03.It will give them a start but perhaps the harder part is making

:18:04. > :18:08.the services stand the test of time. With the prospect of Brexit

:18:09. > :18:10.being triggered next month, it's still unclear if the rights

:18:11. > :18:14.of the many EU migrants who have Donna Traynor was at a conference

:18:15. > :18:26.in Dungannon where Brexit The Prime Minister says the UK would

:18:27. > :18:33.be poorer and public services weaker without the contribution of EU

:18:34. > :18:38.workers. This conference is organised by the stronger together

:18:39. > :18:44.network that killed links with communities across Europe. Lena, you

:18:45. > :18:48.are from Lithuania and have worked a long time in Northern Ireland. What

:18:49. > :18:56.is the greatest fear of Eastern European people with Brexit

:18:57. > :19:05.approaching? The fear is what will be tomorrow. Some politicians

:19:06. > :19:13.attitude and position to migrants is not very nice. People feel confused

:19:14. > :19:17.and not very safe. Thank you. Bernadette, one of the organisers of

:19:18. > :19:23.the conference. What do you think the government needs to do as it

:19:24. > :19:30.enters into negotiations with the EU? The conversation around what is

:19:31. > :19:35.not going to happen when we are not in the EU should be a conversation

:19:36. > :19:40.about how we ensure that inside or out, now we are going to be out,

:19:41. > :19:45.people's human rights are strongly protected, or more strongly

:19:46. > :19:51.protected, in a post Brexit United Kingdom than they are currently. Do

:19:52. > :20:00.you think the fear is being exaggerated? No. The context is

:20:01. > :20:04.happening in a world where the very idea of human rights and the

:20:05. > :20:08.practice and exercise of human rights for all human beings is being

:20:09. > :20:13.challenged. It's particularly important for others in the context

:20:14. > :20:21.of the border. All the conversations around the border have been around

:20:22. > :20:26.more or less security, criminality, and trade. But there's been very

:20:27. > :20:32.little around the rights of freedom of movement, except in the Common

:20:33. > :20:38.travel area which only applies to people who are citizens of the UK

:20:39. > :20:42.and the Irish Republic. Thank you very much indeed. I have no doubt

:20:43. > :20:49.that all of the issues will be discussed in the weeks that follow.

:20:50. > :20:55.If you are an EU worker who has set up home in Northern Ireland, we'd

:20:56. > :20:57.like you to share your thoughts on our Facebook page.

:20:58. > :21:00.Ireland coach Joe Schmidt has named a strong-looking side for the RBS

:21:01. > :21:02.Six Nations clash against France in Dublin on Saturday.

:21:03. > :21:08.Nial Foster reports from County Kildare.

:21:09. > :21:16.A storm brewing at the team hotel this morning and it wasn't called

:21:17. > :21:20.Doris. Until lunchtime, the possible names were Jackson or Sexton. The

:21:21. > :21:24.latter eventually got the call at outside half as Joe Schmidt

:21:25. > :21:31.weathered questions as to why he chose the 31-year-old. Fitness is

:21:32. > :21:37.never really an issue for Johnny. It is making sure he is fully fit. He

:21:38. > :21:41.certainly is. He trained well today and on Tuesday. As expected, he's

:21:42. > :21:48.highly motivated to get into the game on Saturday. After recovering

:21:49. > :21:56.from a stomach bug, Captain Rory Best is reinstated at hooker with

:21:57. > :21:57.Andrew Trimble and Henderson joining him on the bench which could have a

:21:58. > :22:15.big say on match day. It's been a busy 24 hours. We

:22:16. > :22:22.wouldn't have it any other way. You would think we were out of the woods

:22:23. > :22:28.now as Doris has crossed across into the North Sea off to bother Belgium

:22:29. > :22:33.and Holland. As the storm developed, it became deep enough to be

:22:34. > :22:39.described as a weather bomb. We saw the strongest gust of 71 mph. This

:22:40. > :22:45.evening, we've got another problem. This time it is nice. Clearing skies

:22:46. > :22:48.after earlier rain and with Worcester in the atmosphere and

:22:49. > :22:53.rapidly dropping temperatures and the breeze starting to ease off,

:22:54. > :22:58.perfect conditions for ice to form an untreated roads. The Met office

:22:59. > :23:04.has a warning in place for ice overnight. It means that Friday gets

:23:05. > :23:10.off to a chilly start, staying mostly dry through the morning and

:23:11. > :23:14.bright for a time. It won't last. In the West, skies will cloud over and

:23:15. > :23:19.the rain starts to move in spreading to all parts through the afternoon.

:23:20. > :23:23.Another chilly day with top temperatures of six or 7 degrees.

:23:24. > :23:27.The breeze starting to come around from the south-west later in the

:23:28. > :23:32.day. Through the evening, we continue with the showers coming in

:23:33. > :23:37.and the breeze starts to come around. A change in direction means

:23:38. > :23:43.not quite as cold tomorrow. That continues through the weekend. Still

:23:44. > :23:47.wet and windy but we will draw in some warmer air and that has an

:23:48. > :23:52.impact on the temperatures on Saturday. In two double figures.

:23:53. > :23:59.Still plenty of wild weather heading in our direction for the weekend.

:24:00. > :24:06.The isobar indicate the strength of the wind. Not quite as warm on

:24:07. > :24:08.Sunday but nudging towards 10 degrees. Looking quite unsettled

:24:09. > :24:11.through until Monday. Our late summary

:24:12. > :24:17.is at half past ten. You can also keep in contact with us

:24:18. > :24:21.via Facebook and Twitter.
