:00:00. > :00:09.A Royal Marine from Larne has been arrested in England as part

:00:10. > :00:13.of an investigation into dissident republican activity.

:00:14. > :00:16.He was detained in Somerset by counter-terrorism officers

:00:17. > :00:21.It's believed two houses belonging to family members have

:00:22. > :00:38.Chris Buckler is there for us tonight.

:00:39. > :00:47.At the heart of this investigation is the discovery of weapons linked

:00:48. > :00:54.to dissident republicans earlier this year and Larne, however it is a

:00:55. > :00:57.loyalist marine who is being questioned tonight. He is currently

:00:58. > :01:01.serving in the West Country and is being questioned there. What

:01:02. > :01:09.followed was a day of searches here in Larne and south Devon.

:01:10. > :01:15.Police officers are searching but have not yet said what they are

:01:16. > :01:19.looking for. It is known that it is connected with dissident republican

:01:20. > :01:33.terrorism. He was arrested at 12:20pm by

:01:34. > :01:40.counterterrorism officers. Who were joined by police. He was arrested on

:01:41. > :01:41.suspicion of being caught under -- involved in preparing terrorism

:01:42. > :01:49.acts. Full is the one mile away, more

:01:50. > :01:53.searches. It has come as a shock to locals not used to such sites. At

:01:54. > :02:01.the same time, a significant operation was under way and Larne.

:02:02. > :02:06.Old Glenarm Road was the focus of investigations. Today's arrest is

:02:07. > :02:13.the culmination of months of planning following the discovery of

:02:14. > :02:20.two arms dumps. First a significant terrorist hide of bomb-making

:02:21. > :02:30.equipment in Carnfunnock Country Park. Then antipersonnel mines and

:02:31. > :02:38.rockets discovered near Capanagh Forest.

:02:39. > :02:38.This was a counterterrorism investigation that followed those

:02:39. > :02:53.two fines. -- discoveries. It is clear the searches were

:02:54. > :03:03.organised and coordinated. Yes, if you look at the sequence of

:03:04. > :03:09.events. The searches began immediately after Ciaran Maxwel was

:03:10. > :03:14.arrested. I watched forensic officers remove a number of items

:03:15. > :03:17.for investigation. It is clear that court nation was involved due to the

:03:18. > :03:23.number of forces involved. Because that goes back to arms discoveries

:03:24. > :03:32.from earlier this year it is clear there were months of discoveries.

:03:33. > :03:37.The counterterrorism command, the Southwest intelligence unit and

:03:38. > :03:43.Northern Irish police force all involved.

:03:44. > :03:50.Has anything more been said about the arrest?

:03:51. > :03:55.They have not even confirmed that a marine was arrested. They say they

:03:56. > :04:00.are aware of an arrest under the terrorism act. They will assist this

:04:01. > :04:04.investigation fully and see it will be inappropriate to say anything

:04:05. > :04:05.else because it is an ongoing investigation.

:04:06. > :04:08.Sinn Fein has accused the DUP of jeopardising a community project

:04:09. > :04:12.Some unionists had objected to the development because it's

:04:13. > :04:16.at the site of a GAA club in Glenariff, which has

:04:17. > :04:19.the names of two IRA men from the 1920s on the gates.

:04:20. > :04:22.A vote which allows for council funding was narrowly

:04:23. > :04:29.These are the gates that sparked a political row

:04:30. > :04:40.The DUP said if they are living at the site

:04:41. > :04:45.they could re-traumatise people affected by terrorism.

:04:46. > :04:55.Last week members of the GAA club voted to

:04:56. > :04:58.Last night by the narrowest of margins and

:04:59. > :05:00.behind closed doors the Council approved

:05:01. > :05:04.?180,000 in funding for the community centre.

:05:05. > :05:06.Sinn Fein accused the DUP of jeopardising the project

:05:07. > :05:16.It is a sideshow to try to distract attention from any money

:05:17. > :05:27.I understand the gates will stay in place, there is no issue.

:05:28. > :05:31.There are no conditions on the funding.

:05:32. > :05:33.A lot of our district could learn from this.

:05:34. > :05:34.The DUP said they were disappointed with

:05:35. > :05:38.This has caused a lot of bad feeling in the

:05:39. > :05:52.Two senior officials from the Olympic Council of Ireland

:05:53. > :05:55.are expected to meet with police in Brazil tomorrow.

:05:56. > :05:57.Stephen Martin, who is from Northern Ireland,

:05:58. > :06:01.and Kevin Kilty had their passports seized by officers investigating

:06:02. > :06:06.the illegal re-sale of tickets to the Games.

:06:07. > :06:09.The former head of the OCI, Pat Hickey, was arrested last week.

:06:10. > :06:15.A serious breakdown of staff relationships at a West Belfast

:06:16. > :06:18.school had a substantial impact on pupils - that's just one

:06:19. > :06:21.of the findings of an independent investigation into

:06:22. > :06:26.The report, published by the Department for Education,

:06:27. > :06:29.says individual staff at the school described a culture of fear,

:06:30. > :06:32.with claims of bullying and intimidation.

:06:33. > :06:35.It also says the Council for Catholic Maintained Schools

:06:36. > :06:39.should have intervened sooner to resolve difficulties.

:06:40. > :06:42.Our Education Correspondent, Robbie Meredith, reports.

:06:43. > :06:44.It is a west Belfast school that has seen

:06:45. > :06:49.protests by some parents and some pupils.

:06:50. > :06:51.Now the extent of the problems at De La Salle College

:06:52. > :06:56.According to the report, there was a culture of

:06:57. > :07:02.And a history of disputes over selection

:07:03. > :07:08.There was a serious breakdown of working relationships

:07:09. > :07:11.which impacted substantially on the pupils there.

:07:12. > :07:17.Classes were often disrupted because of teacher absences.

:07:18. > :07:19.Despite that, the report said the school

:07:20. > :07:23.did not ask the local exam board for any extra time or other special

:07:24. > :07:28.circumstances for pupils sitting A-levels or GCSEs.

:07:29. > :07:32.That has come as a shock to parent representatives.

:07:33. > :07:34.We were assured there would be special dispensation

:07:35. > :07:43.The committee was assured, the full committee, were assured

:07:44. > :07:47.that would be the case and the report states that was not.

:07:48. > :07:51.The report says there was no single cause for the problems, they're not

:07:52. > :08:04.solely down to the principal, but it is critical

:08:05. > :08:07.the problems for more than two years.

:08:08. > :08:09.The report breaks down into immediate actions

:08:10. > :08:12.to focus on and wider strategic actions

:08:13. > :08:15.and it is important all players play their part in trying to resolve

:08:16. > :08:17.the issues and making sure we do not have another issue

:08:18. > :08:25.With the new term about to start, many will need to be

:08:26. > :08:32.Sinn Fein have announced that former MLA Philip McGuigan will replace

:08:33. > :08:42.Mr McGuigan has been selected for co-option to the North Antrim

:08:43. > :08:44.seat following Mr McKay's resignation, after it was revealed

:08:45. > :08:48.he had been involved in advising the loyalist blogger Jamie Bryson

:08:49. > :08:51.on how to give his evidence to an Assembly committee.

:08:52. > :08:54.Dozens of Syrian refugees who moved here just before Christmas enjoyed

:08:55. > :09:01.Around 30 of them were given a tour of Ulster Rugby's Kingspan Stadium.

:09:02. > :09:05.They had VIP access to all areas from the main stand, to the dugouts.

:09:06. > :09:15.The families all had good things to say about their new home.

:09:16. > :09:24.My favourite thing is the people because they are friendly. It is a

:09:25. > :09:30.beautiful city. I feel so happy here in Belfast.

:09:31. > :09:31.I like Belfast, it is very nice. Many of Team Ireland's

:09:32. > :09:33.competitors returned home Silver medals were won in sailing

:09:34. > :09:38.and rowing and other athletes However, it was a disappointing

:09:39. > :09:45.Games for Team Ireland's boxers with Paddy Barnes shock early exit,

:09:46. > :09:48.as he battled to make the light-flyweight limit

:09:49. > :09:50.and a controversial judging decision ending Michael Conlan's

:09:51. > :10:03.hopes for a medal. Totally devastated. We trained so

:10:04. > :10:14.hard and the circumstances, that's a bad lost. But the positives to take

:10:15. > :10:18.out of it is helping my team in the biggest competition in the world.

:10:19. > :10:23.I still think what I said was true and honest. If I hadn't said them,

:10:24. > :10:28.even though it was crazy, I would regret not saying it so I'm happy

:10:29. > :10:34.with myself and I know what went on and it is what it is. I'm delighted

:10:35. > :10:40.to be back here and have a few rogue's welcomed. It is fantastic.

:10:41. > :10:43.How much support I've received since the boat?

:10:44. > :10:52.All over the world people have been writing to me. They are saying they

:10:53. > :11:00.are behind me. People in Canada seeing eye am a folk hero. It is

:11:01. > :11:02.fantastic. It has been overwhelming. It has made it easier.

:11:03. > :11:04.The Republic of Ireland captain, Robbie Keane, has announced he's

:11:05. > :11:06.to retire from international football at the age of 36.

:11:07. > :11:09.Keane, who has 145 senior caps, is due to play his last match

:11:13. > :11:16.The LA Galaxy forward has played for the Republic for the past 18

:11:17. > :11:22.years and is his country's all-time leading scorer with 67 goals.

:11:23. > :11:32.Now, finally onto the weather forecast with Cecilia Daly.

:11:33. > :11:39.It has been a lovely day and there are another couple of decent days to

:11:40. > :11:45.come before the end of the summer holidays. Temperatures are quite

:11:46. > :11:51.clear tonight -- it is quite clear tonight 's temperatures will fall

:11:52. > :11:56.away. That close will be around at the start tomorrow morning but will

:11:57. > :12:03.soon burn off in the sunshine. Most of Thursday is looking dry, warm and

:12:04. > :12:09.sunny. A lovely day across many parts of the Republic as well. But

:12:10. > :12:15.you can see a line of showers creeping onto the West. Fine in

:12:16. > :12:23.parts of Scotland but part of East Anglia and Wales will see some cloud

:12:24. > :12:32.and that hot weather is moving away from the south-east. It might reach

:12:33. > :12:40.22 degrees tomorrow but later in the Deep Purple see some showers

:12:41. > :12:46.particularly in the West. They will gradually see some

:12:47. > :12:53.on Friday, some showers to start with but otherwise fine and warm

:12:54. > :12:59.weather to come with the best of it through the afternoon. More

:13:00. > :13:00.unsettled this weekend. Some rain around but not all the time and it

:13:01. > :13:03.will be dry as well. Our next BBC Newsline
