:00:07. > :00:09.The Republic's cabinet will meet tomorrow to discuss
:00:10. > :00:14.its controversial tax arrangements with the technology giant Apple.
:00:15. > :00:18.Earlier today the European Commission said the Irish government
:00:19. > :00:19.had enabled Apple to enjoy huge tax benefits which it found to be
:00:20. > :00:22.illegal and it ordered the firm to pay up to thirteen billion Euro
:00:23. > :00:39.Our Economics and Business Editor John Campbell reports.
:00:40. > :00:48.Apple is one of the world's best loved France. It sold its billion
:00:49. > :00:52.Earth iPhone earlier this year, but it is billions of disputed tax which
:00:53. > :00:55.has been at the centre of its clash with the European Commission and
:00:56. > :01:00.today the commission ruled that Ireland had given Apple a special
:01:01. > :01:05.deal which was a giant illegal subsidy. Here is what the commission
:01:06. > :01:09.said it was going on... Apple set up a company in Ireland and all profits
:01:10. > :01:13.from this European operations were booked by that company and an
:01:14. > :01:16.arrangement with the Irish tax authorities meant that Apple could
:01:17. > :01:19.send the vast majority of those profits away from Ireland to a
:01:20. > :01:38.so-called head office. A loophole in Irish law meant this
:01:39. > :01:41.head office did not have to pay tax anywhere in the world and as a
:01:42. > :01:44.result, Apple had an effective corporate tax rate of less than 1%.
:01:45. > :01:48.The effective tax rate in 2011 was 0.05%. To put that in perspective,
:01:49. > :01:55.it means that for every million euro in profits, it paid just 500 euros
:01:56. > :02:01.in taxes. The Irish government is aghast at this decision which paints
:02:02. > :02:04.the country as a tax haven. It believes the commission is acting
:02:05. > :02:10.far beyond its remit. I disagree with that. I think it is very
:02:11. > :02:16.tenuous grounds. The Irish authorities at the time in 2007 did
:02:17. > :02:23.nothing improper or illegal and there is a government meeting in the
:02:24. > :02:27.morning and I will be proposing that the Irish government appealed this
:02:28. > :02:31.decision. Apple has reacted furiously, the firm 's Chief
:02:32. > :02:36.Executive says that the European Commission has attempted to rewrite
:02:37. > :02:41.their history in Europe and ignore the Irish tax laws and then the
:02:42. > :02:44.international tax system. Apple employs thousands of people in court
:02:45. > :02:54.and the country's dilemma was reflected on the streets today. They
:02:55. > :02:59.can pull up and leave. That would be terrible. It is great that there are
:03:00. > :03:04.5000 jobs in Cork. We are delighted with that. They would not pull out
:03:05. > :03:10.if they had to pay the money. We cannot afford to lose Apple.
:03:11. > :03:16.Ireland's appeal will be a slow process, it is likely to be at least
:03:17. > :03:18.five years before this case is closed once and for all.
:03:19. > :03:20.Earlier our Dublin correspondent Shane Harrison told me why the Irish
:03:21. > :03:22.government was appealing the Commission's decision
:03:23. > :03:29.when it could be 13 billion Euro better off.
:03:30. > :03:39.Just to put that figure in context, 13 billion euros, ?11 billion, it is
:03:40. > :03:42.the equivalent of the Irish annual health budgets, so why is the
:03:43. > :03:47.government appealing? People are wondering, it is a bit like a
:03:48. > :03:50.lottery winner who has won the lottery but is thinking about
:03:51. > :03:55.tearing up the ticket before claiming the prize. A lot of the
:03:56. > :03:58.answer has to do with reputation, the Irish government has come in for
:03:59. > :04:07.criticism because it has been alleged that it is a tax haven and
:04:08. > :04:10.the Irish government says that is not the case. It has closed a number
:04:11. > :04:12.of loopholes and it is saying that it profoundly disagrees with the
:04:13. > :04:16.findings. It says it gave no favourable deal to Apple and this
:04:17. > :04:21.ruling is not about corporation tax, it is nothing to do with the low
:04:22. > :04:27.corporation tax rate and the Irish government also says it is not its
:04:28. > :04:31.job to collect tax in other European countries from Apple. For all of
:04:32. > :04:33.those reasons, but mainly to do with its reputation, Ireland is not keen
:04:34. > :04:36.to take that money at this stage. Apple is an american
:04:37. > :04:38.company and tonight President Obama's Press Secretary
:04:39. > :04:54.described the European Commission's It could be treated in the US tax
:04:55. > :05:03.system as a current tax payment that would allow, essentially, Apple to
:05:04. > :05:07.deduct that EU tax payment from their taxes. That would not be fair
:05:08. > :05:09.to US taxpayers. Searches carried out by the police
:05:10. > :05:12.in Larne today are linked to an investigation into terrorist
:05:13. > :05:14.activity which resulted in the arrest of a 30 year
:05:15. > :05:29.old member of the armed forces Police have sealed off this Town
:05:30. > :05:34.Park area in Larne and it is understood a bomb disposal experts
:05:35. > :05:39.are investigating a wooded area. The PSNI have confirmed that they are
:05:40. > :05:45.also searching an area of Iceland next to Larne football club next to
:05:46. > :05:48.Inver Road which is linked to an investigation into republican
:05:49. > :05:53.terrorism. It is linked to the arrest of a 30-year-old member of
:05:54. > :05:57.the Armed Forces, he has been named as Ciaran Maxwell, a Royal Marine.
:05:58. > :06:00.He has been questioned about dissident terrorist activity and is
:06:01. > :06:04.in custody. Although this area is more likely to be linked to the
:06:05. > :06:08.loyalist community, the arrest of the Royal Marine is thought to be
:06:09. > :06:15.connected to the discovery of two major arms dumps nearby. The first
:06:16. > :06:21.was in this park in March, followed by another in May. The searches are
:06:22. > :06:25.said to have caused a lot of local disruption. This is obviously the
:06:26. > :06:29.local park where people go for walks, exercising dogs and children
:06:30. > :06:34.and young families and I am aware that there have been a number of
:06:35. > :06:40.homes evacuated, constituents in my area with young families and a local
:06:41. > :06:45.business has been forced to close due to these ongoing searches.
:06:46. > :06:49.Meanwhile a 27-year-old man from the Larne area has been arrested. He is
:06:50. > :06:51.being questioned about dissident republican activity.
:06:52. > :06:53.Notes and documents have been discovered by Gardai in the house
:06:54. > :06:56.in County Cavan where five members of the same family were found dead
:06:57. > :07:02.The bodies of Clodagh and Alan Hawe were discovered along with those
:07:03. > :07:04.of their three sons in their home at Barconey outside
:07:05. > :07:15.Our reporter, Catherine Morrison reports:
:07:16. > :07:22.In the tranquil Cavan countryside a scene of unimaginable horror, five
:07:23. > :07:27.members of the same family die in an apparent murder suicide. The bodies
:07:28. > :07:32.of Alan Hawe pictured here with his three sons Liam, Niall and Ryan and
:07:33. > :07:37.his wife Clodagh were discovered yesterday in their home near
:07:38. > :07:40.Ballyjamesduff. Today the forensic investigation continues, Gardai
:07:41. > :07:45.tried to answer two questions, Ohio and why this family died. It is
:07:46. > :07:51.understood notes were left on the door of the property and inside, all
:07:52. > :07:57.now part of this enquiry. The tragedy has left everyone struggling
:07:58. > :08:02.to find words of comfort. I was speaking to the priest yesterday
:08:03. > :08:07.evening and when I was speaking to him, he was still in a state of
:08:08. > :08:14.shock himself. He told me that anyone he met, they were just numb
:08:15. > :08:22.by this extraordinary and unprecedented event. It was so
:08:23. > :08:26.shocking, because they were so well known in the community. Absolutely
:08:27. > :08:32.shocked. Have you spoken to other neighbours? Everyone is in the same
:08:33. > :08:38.situation. Those who knew the family and those who do not and it is not
:08:39. > :08:45.just here, it is for miles around. We are all just speechless. Alan
:08:46. > :08:49.Hawe was the deputy principal at Castlerahan National School. Pupils
:08:50. > :08:52.were due back today after the summer holidays, instead educational
:08:53. > :08:56.psychologists have been advising teachers on how best to help their
:08:57. > :09:02.pupils deal with this tragedy. No one from the school wanted to speak
:09:03. > :09:06.on camera but in a statement, the principal described Alan Hawe as a
:09:07. > :09:09.valued member of school staff and she said that the three boys were
:09:10. > :09:17.wonderful children who would be greatly missed by all who knew them.
:09:18. > :09:19.Gardai are expected to remain at the scene for some time.
:09:20. > :09:22.The Lord Mayor of Belfast says he will meet members of the Jewish
:09:23. > :09:25.community and the police following an attack on Jewish graves
:09:26. > :09:28.The police are treating it as a hate crime.
:09:29. > :09:43.Lord Mayor of Belfast Brian Kingston surveys the damage for himself. 13
:09:44. > :09:47.graves in the Jewish part of the cemetery were targeted on Friday
:09:48. > :09:52.afternoon. This does not represent the modern Belfast. Those
:09:53. > :10:01.responsible need to catch themselves on. All of us obviously take great
:10:02. > :10:04.pride and solace in visiting the graves of family members and our
:10:05. > :10:07.forebears and none of us would like to have a situation where those
:10:08. > :10:12.graves are vandalised and desecrated. The Lord Mayor says he
:10:13. > :10:15.plans to meet with community representatives and the PSNI. For
:10:16. > :10:21.some local people today, it was important for them to stand up to
:10:22. > :10:25.those behind the attack. For evil to prevail, it takes good men to say
:10:26. > :10:29.nothing and that is why I am here today. I have lived in the area for
:10:30. > :10:34.20 years and have close bonds with the Jewish community and my heart is
:10:35. > :10:39.broken for them. I want to see for myself what was done here on Friday
:10:40. > :10:43.and it was not in my name. The Lord Maher says he is determined to bring
:10:44. > :10:47.to justice those behind the attacks on Friday.
:10:48. > :10:49.The senior Irish Olympic official, Pat Hickey, is now under
:10:50. > :10:53.He was released from jail in Rio de Janeiro earlier today
:10:54. > :10:57.The president of the Irish Olympic Council was arrested nearly
:10:58. > :10:59.a fortnight ago in a police investigation into the alleged

:11:16. > :11:18.It's a result which brings more pressure on the tenure of Glentoran
:11:19. > :11:21.Holders Cliftonville beat Lisburn Distillery 11-1
:11:22. > :11:25.and there were also wins for Linfield and Crusaders.

:11:38. > :11:46.Here is the weather forecast with Cecilia Daly.
:11:47. > :11:52.Good evening. It has been another warm day, temperatures have been
:11:53. > :11:56.into the low 20s, we do have some rain coming in from the western
:11:57. > :12:00.night, just a few hours of work whether in most places, clearing the
:12:01. > :12:05.East Coast in the early hours, many places dry by the end of the night
:12:06. > :12:09.and still miles. Not too breezy, but we changed the wind direction, it
:12:10. > :12:12.will move into the West for tomorrow, that will mean a few
:12:13. > :12:23.showers especially in the north and west and it will feel cooler and
:12:24. > :12:26.sunshine, the best of that over Belfast and the south-east. There is
:12:27. > :12:33.the cloud and rain tonight, it moves into the East, towards the London
:12:34. > :12:37.area but the rain will those allowed leaving an area of cloud, lots of
:12:38. > :12:41.dry weather with sunshine behind it, it showers moving in across Scotland
:12:42. > :12:46.and just the odd shower for the Republic of Ireland where it should
:12:47. > :12:50.be a largely fine afternoon. A few showers for Northern Ireland mainly
:12:51. > :12:55.in the north and west, but a lot of the day will be dry. Temperatures
:12:56. > :13:00.will reach 18 or 19 degrees, it will feel pleasant, not as warm as today.
:13:01. > :13:10.Thursday is the 1st of September, and nice morning, do what you have
:13:11. > :13:12.to do outdoors in the morning because the afternoon will turn
:13:13. > :13:15.cloudy and breezy with some rain coming from time to time. Moving
:13:16. > :13:17.further towards the weekend, it is looking more unsettled, with some
:13:18. > :13:20.rain around but it will not rain all the time.
