:00:27. > :00:31.office on Falls Road at around 8:30pm. Emma has been taken to

:00:32. > :00:37.hospital with gunshot wounds to his leg. His condition is not known -- a

:00:38. > :00:42.man. The area has been cordoned off. A local person said there had been

:00:43. > :00:45.anti-social activity in the area shortly before the shooting. The

:00:46. > :00:46.police say the investigation into the attack is ongoing.

:00:47. > :00:51.The Taoiseach Enda Kenny has said it's a matter of vital national

:00:52. > :00:53.interest that there's no return to a hard border when

:00:54. > :00:57.Mr Kenny was making a major speech on the implications of Brexit,

:00:58. > :00:59.saying it poses a serious threat to the Republic's

:01:00. > :01:05.He described the forthcoming negotiations as the most significant

:01:06. > :01:07.that Ireland has faced as an independent state.

:01:08. > :01:15.Here's our economics and business editor John Campbell.

:01:25. > :01:26.Irish voters, fellow EU leaders and a warning

:01:27. > :01:31.With the dissolution of the Assembly, there is a very

:01:32. > :01:32.real danger that the absence of political leadership

:01:33. > :01:35.in Northern Ireland will lead to a retreat to partisan debate

:01:36. > :01:39.and an even greater marginalisation of Northern Ireland's concerns.

:01:40. > :01:43.The Brexit process will not wait for another round of

:01:44. > :01:56.The future of the border will be one of the toughest Brexit issues.

:01:57. > :01:58.Neither the British nor Irish Governments want a return

:01:59. > :02:08.But finding a way to keep the border at its current invisible state

:02:09. > :02:15.For example, there will be have to be some form of customs checks.

:02:16. > :02:18.One of Enda Kenny's biggest challenges will be convincing the EU

:02:19. > :02:24.leaders the border should not be hardened.

:02:25. > :02:26.The Irish Government will oppose a hard border.

:02:27. > :02:28.They will argue for free movement in Ireland,

:02:29. > :02:31.seek European Union funding for cross-border projects

:02:48. > :03:01.Key sectors, such as agriculture, food, fishing, all face particular

:03:02. > :03:09.Hanging over the speech was the question of who will be speaking

:03:10. > :03:14.for Ireland as Mr Kenny's leadership comes under pressure.

:03:15. > :03:17.A man from Newcastle who was held at knife-point in his home

:03:18. > :03:19.and had his car stolen says he feels victimised again by personal

:03:20. > :03:24.injury claims made by three police officers.

:03:25. > :03:27.They were in a car which was hit by Terence Duffin's stolen car.

:03:28. > :03:36.When Terence Duffin's car was stolen, it was traumatic enough.

:03:37. > :03:40.But months later, it was written off in a police chase and he has had

:03:41. > :03:42.more unexpected news - he's received three personal injury

:03:43. > :03:52.I just couldn't believe this was happening to me.

:03:53. > :03:54.They told me they would send me full details of all claims

:03:55. > :03:59.I reckon that will be about September and then I will see

:04:00. > :04:05.It is bad enough with the criminal case coming up, without this

:04:06. > :04:14.The police chased the car from Newcastle to Belfast.

:04:15. > :04:21.We asked the PSNI if it was in practice for police to make civil

:04:22. > :04:22.claims against owners even if they were not

:04:23. > :04:29.They said they did not hold this information and each

:04:30. > :04:31.incident would depend on individual circumstances.

:04:41. > :04:43.officer, like any other citizen injured by a stolen car

:04:44. > :04:53.This solicitor says this is the officer's only option

:04:54. > :04:56.Terence has now replaced his car and is waiting to see just how

:04:57. > :05:01.high his next insurance bill will be.

:05:02. > :05:04.In a statement this afternoon the PSNI said the officers are not

:05:05. > :05:06.claiming against the victim's insurance, they are claiming

:05:07. > :05:10.The PSNI said it was a matter between the insured person

:05:11. > :05:12.and the insurance company whether or not the incident

:05:13. > :05:22.would be treated as a claim under their policy.

:05:23. > :05:26.A Belfast man has been jailed for 11 years for causing life-changing

:05:27. > :05:29.injuries to a young woman after he assaulted her with a claw

:05:30. > :05:34.The judge, who sentenced 22-year-old Aaron Hyland

:05:35. > :05:40.from Katherine's Road in Ballymurphy, said the violence

:05:41. > :05:42.used against the woman, who is now 25, was "sickening".

:05:43. > :05:44.Hyland admitted causing the woman grievous bodily harm

:05:45. > :05:52.Police welcomed the sentence and praised the strength and dignity

:05:53. > :05:53.shown by the victim. Sinn Fein's Stormont leader

:05:54. > :05:56.Michelle O'Neill has rejected DUP calls for the controversial petition

:05:57. > :05:59.of concern to be scrapped. Ms O'Neill said the mechanism
