:00:09. > :00:15.Hello and welcome to South Today from Oxford. In tonight's programme:
:00:16. > :00:18.The cancer patient who says cuts to his benefits will leave him
:00:19. > :00:22.struggling to cope. Paul Marlow is about to lose ?200 a
:00:23. > :00:25.month and says he won't be able to buy food or heat his house.
:00:26. > :00:29.Also tonight: Patricia Goodband's murder ` the court hears the man on
:00:30. > :00:33.trial may have lied, but that didn't mean he killed her.
:00:34. > :00:36.And later on: On target to win ` how Matt Skelhon is hoping to add
:00:37. > :00:47.European glory to his Paralympic success.
:00:48. > :00:50.A man living with cancer says a reduction in his disability living
:00:51. > :00:54.allowance has forced him to register with a local food bank ` because he
:00:55. > :00:58.can no longer afford to feed himself properly. Paul Marlow from Barton
:00:59. > :01:02.finds it difficult to walk far. But he's now been told he'll lose more
:01:03. > :01:07.than two hundred pounds a month, because his needs have been
:01:08. > :01:10.re`assessed. Victoria Cook reports. Paul Marlow found out his bladder
:01:11. > :01:16.cancer had come back this year. He's had it for a decade. Now he faces
:01:17. > :01:21.his 38th operation. He says walking is tough, and working impossible.
:01:22. > :01:24.Now he faces paying ever`increasing bills with even less money because
:01:25. > :01:50.the government says he isn't entitled to Disability living
:01:51. > :01:55.allowance. He's now appealing the decision.
:01:56. > :02:04.He's called in the help of his local MP and councillors.
:02:05. > :02:07.Suzy Drohan is the manager of the Oxfordshire Welfare rights centre.
:02:08. > :02:10.She's taken on Paul's case. The team here have more than a
:02:11. > :02:31.ninety per cent success rate in appealing benefit cut decisions.
:02:32. > :02:35.The Department for Work and Pensions says it gives DLA to those who
:02:36. > :02:38.struggle to walk ` it makes its decision on whether to give that
:02:39. > :02:44.benefit based on medical evidence. It says if people aren't happy with
:02:45. > :02:48.its decision they can appeal. Now Paul will have to wait to hear the
:02:49. > :02:55.results of his, but he's been told it may take more than two months to
:02:56. > :02:58.be processed. The jury's begun considering its
:02:59. > :03:02.verdict in the trial of an Aylesbury man accused of murdering another man
:03:03. > :03:11.with a crossbow bolt. Darrell Farnham was had been shot on the
:03:12. > :03:16.chest. He was found on the doorstep of his home in Belgrave Road back in
:03:17. > :03:20.June. Russell Gill from Lavendar Walk has admitted manslaughter. He
:03:21. > :03:23.claimed the crossbow had gone off by accident when he was attacked by Mr
:03:24. > :03:27.Farnham's dog. Reading Crown Court heard that the victim was a drug
:03:28. > :03:29.dealer, and that the men had argued over an unpaid debt.
:03:30. > :03:32.A former school governor from Abingdon has gone on trial accused
:03:33. > :03:37.of sexual offences against young girls. Paul Townsend of Hadland Road
:03:38. > :03:39.has since resigned from his post at Dunmore Pre`School board of
:03:40. > :03:42.governors, and as president of Abingdon's chamber of commerce. He's
:03:43. > :03:45.standing trial for a number of offences, including sexual activity
:03:46. > :03:47.with a girl under 13. None of the allegations relate to children at
:03:48. > :03:51.the pre`school. He told a lie ` but that doesn't
:03:52. > :03:53.mean he's guilty of murder. The words today of the defence barrister
:03:54. > :03:56.representing Christopher Symons, who's on trial for the killing of
:03:57. > :04:00.his business partner Patricia Goodband. Her body was found at her
:04:01. > :04:03.home near Aylesbury last December. Reading Crown Court was told that
:04:04. > :04:07.too much weight had been placed on the defendant's earlier claim to
:04:08. > :04:08.have dropped the victim at a train station ` something later proved to
:04:09. > :07:24.be untrue. Angela Walker reports. For 15 years Godfrey was at the
:07:25. > :07:27.scene of 999 calls before paramedics. But his much loved
:07:28. > :07:32.volunteering came to an emergency stop after he drove at 33 miles per
:07:33. > :07:35.hour in a 20 zone. He said he hadn't realised the speed limit. Godfrey
:07:36. > :07:37.appealed the decision and came to meet the chief executive at the
:07:38. > :07:40.ambulance headquarters here in Bicester. The trust still maintains
:07:41. > :07:43.Godfrey committed serious traffic offences. But it's now said in
:07:44. > :07:47.recognition of the way he's served his local community and the trust
:07:48. > :07:53.for so many years, it has reviewed the dismissal and agreed to retrain
:07:54. > :08:00.and reassess him. By Phil thrilled that the ambulance
:08:01. > :08:07.service had reviewed the case, given me the opportunity to take a driving
:08:08. > :08:15.reassessment and thereafter give me the chance to be reinstated and come
:08:16. > :08:19.back to Farringdon to do the thing I've been doing, serving the
:08:20. > :08:22.community as a responder. When local plummer David had a major heart
:08:23. > :08:26.attack it was Godfrey who saved his life.
:08:27. > :08:29.You can't survive in this sort of community without this facility.
:08:30. > :08:33.Yes, a mistake appears to have been made, but through no reason apart
:08:34. > :08:37.from potentially trying to save somebody's life will stop.
:08:38. > :08:41.His hard work in Faringdon hadn't gone unnoticed ` locals started a
:08:42. > :08:44.campaign to get him re`instated. So, how will he thank them?
:08:45. > :08:50.I can thank them by coming back into the community with a smile on my
:08:51. > :08:53.face. Tonight sees the third in a series
:08:54. > :08:56.of public meetings to discuss Oxfordshire County Council's need to
:08:57. > :09:00.make millions of pounds in savings, by cutting back on some services it
:09:01. > :09:03.currently provides. The aim is to gauge local opinion ahead of any
:09:04. > :09:07.decisions being taken. The meeting's being held in Wantage at the Civic
:09:08. > :09:12.Hall, and is being chaired by BBC South Today's Emma Vardy. The leader
:09:13. > :09:20.of the council and senior council managers will be taking questions
:09:21. > :09:24.from the floor. Two further meetings are also planned. The County Council
:09:25. > :09:26.is grappling with the need to save ?61 million on top of cuts that had
:09:27. > :09:29.already been agreed. ?61 million on top of
:09:30. > :09:32.On Friday, we ran a report about an armed stand`off with police in
:09:33. > :09:36.Kidlington near Oxford. The report contained a photograph of the wrong
:09:37. > :09:40.man ` which had been given to us by the police. We used that picture in
:09:41. > :09:45.good faith, and we'd like to apologise sincerely to the man in
:09:46. > :09:48.question, Daniel Rodriguez`Lay. The football action from Oxford
:09:49. > :10:00.United, Swindon and the MK Dons is coming up in a few minutes. I would
:10:01. > :10:01.like at eight o'clock and 10:25pm. That's all from me for the moment,
:10:02. > :10:03.here's Sally that it says has helped more
:10:04. > :10:06.teenagers get vocational qualifications.
:10:07. > :10:10.Still to come in this evening's South Today: Aiming high ` the
:10:11. > :10:19.Paralympic gold medallist shooting for gold again this week in Spain.
:10:20. > :10:22.Plans to demolish a clubhouse used by anglers in Weymouth have been
:10:23. > :10:26.rejected by councillors. The lease on the current clubhouse expires
:10:27. > :10:30.next year. The council wants to knock it down and build a car park
:10:31. > :10:33.in order to generate more money. Members of the Harbour Management
:10:34. > :10:39.Board voted 4`1 to keep the club on the site. One year after the
:10:40. > :10:42.collapse of the company that installed Bournemouth's artificial
:10:43. > :10:44.surf reef, and its owner still can't be traced.
:10:45. > :10:47.Nick Behunin ran New Zealand`based ASR Limited which built the ?3.2m
:10:48. > :10:54.Boscombe Reef in 2009 but the company went into liquidation last
:10:55. > :10:57.September. Bournemouth Council is owed almost ?15,000 and other local
:10:58. > :11:04.contractors involved in the reef's construction four years ago are
:11:05. > :11:07.still owed as much as ?34,000. Parents in Dorset have vowed to
:11:08. > :11:11.fight a decision to close day nurseries which are run by the
:11:12. > :11:14.County Council. The facilities in Blandford and Shaftesbury, which
:11:15. > :11:19.include an out of school club, are used by 250 children. The council
:11:20. > :11:23.says the loss of Government grants means it can no longer afford to
:11:24. > :11:24.keep them open, but parents fear finding suitable alternatives may be
:11:25. > :11:36.impossible. It's the weekend and playtime at
:11:37. > :11:39.Lola's house. But during the week the children gathered here spend
:11:40. > :11:43.time playing away from their homes. They go to Shaftsbury Nursery, which
:11:44. > :11:47.is run by Dorset County Council. The news that it's to close has
:11:48. > :11:56.devastated the parents who depend upon it. It was a complete shock and
:11:57. > :12:00.a bolt out of the blue. It caused panic, because I thought, there are
:12:01. > :12:04.going to be all of these children, looking for other nursery places in
:12:05. > :12:07.a very small town. It is so good there, I can't see how they can
:12:08. > :12:12.justify closing somewhere that would give our children the best start in
:12:13. > :12:16.life. Dorset County Council say the loss of the Government's Early Years
:12:17. > :12:19.Foundation grant means that its two nurseries, at Sure Start centres in
:12:20. > :12:22.Shaftsbury and Blandford, as well as an out of school club there, are
:12:23. > :12:26.losing around ?130,000 a year and are no longer financially
:12:27. > :12:36.Viable. It is unusual for councils to directly operated nurseries for
:12:37. > :12:41.children. It becomes increasingly difficult, when there is a deficit
:12:42. > :12:44.budget, to keep those sorts of facilities open. It is with a heavy
:12:45. > :12:48.heart we are having to take this decision. Parents have until the end
:12:49. > :12:51.of March to find somewhere else for their children to go, and are being
:12:52. > :12:54.offered support. These mums says Shaftsbury's only other nursery and
:12:55. > :12:57.pre`school are full. They're working together to try and to persuade the
:12:58. > :13:03.council to rethink a decision they find hard to accept.
:13:04. > :13:06.Claims of poor pay and zero hour contracts for cleaners working on
:13:07. > :13:11.First Great Western trains have resulted in further strike action
:13:12. > :13:13.this Friday. Members of rail union RMT, working for sub`contractors
:13:14. > :13:18.Mitie, will take industrial action for 24 hours from Friday morning.
:13:19. > :13:21.The union say it's a fight for a living wage and workplace justice.
:13:22. > :13:24.First Great Western said negotiations are ongoing and accused
:13:25. > :13:29.the RMT of playing political games rather than resolving the issues.
:13:30. > :13:33.Smart card tickets for commuters travelling into London will be
:13:34. > :13:36.rolled out to more stations in West Sussex today. Southern Rail is
:13:37. > :13:41.extending usage of its Key smart card to enable commuters to buy
:13:42. > :13:44.tickets into London. The company says the scheme marks the first step
:13:45. > :13:51.towards abandoning paper tickets all together.
:13:52. > :14:01.On to sport. Saints did very well? They certainly did. Pre`season, I
:14:02. > :14:04.spoke to the Southampton manager Mauricio Pochettino and said, how
:14:05. > :14:09.high can the team go? He said, there is no real limit. He's not going to
:14:10. > :14:13.set a limit on what his team can do. They are a surprise package.
:14:14. > :14:16.Saints were fourth for about two hours on Saturday night, before wins
:14:17. > :14:20.for Manchester City and Tottenham over the weekend knocked them back
:14:21. > :14:25.to sixth, they've lost just once in their opening eight fixtures. A
:14:26. > :14:28.great result for them on Saturday. Mauricio Pochettino so far seems an
:14:29. > :14:32.inspired choice by the man who calls the shots, Nicola Cortese. An early
:14:33. > :14:35.chance for Saints, but Pablo Osvaldo could have done better. United in
:14:36. > :14:44.front, Januzai's pass, Boruc with a good save but Van Persie with the
:14:45. > :14:48.follow up. It is always tough when you are behind at Old Trafford.
:14:49. > :14:50.Saints left it late, but the goal is being credited to Dejan Lovren. What
:14:51. > :15:04.a signing he has been. 1`1. Sunni TRANSLATION: We pressed high
:15:05. > :15:08.up the pitch, we pressed a lot. I want to congratulate them, it is
:15:09. > :15:13.difficult to come to a ground like Old Trafford and get a result. We
:15:14. > :15:15.were deciding just to play, to see what we could do. And we took the
:15:16. > :15:18.one point. Going very well indeed. next year. The council wants to
:15:19. > :16:08.knock it down and build a car rather than by back into it with two
:16:09. > :16:17.headers. The second a classic own goal. There was great composure to
:16:18. > :16:22.find a winner two minutes from time. They lost the composure as he
:16:23. > :16:26.celebrated with a mass bundle and was even joined by their own
:16:27. > :16:33.goalkeeper. Nothing to celebrate in the two. Oxford maintained their
:16:34. > :16:35.unbeaten away record, but they could not score a goal
:16:36. > :16:40.9000 more than the next biggest attendance in the division.
:16:41. > :16:43.Portsmouth climb to mid`table. In ice hockey's Premier League it
:16:44. > :16:46.was a good weekend for Basingstoke bison. They beat the table topping
:16:47. > :16:48.Manchester Phoenix 4`2 on Saturday night. They trailed twice. Miroslav
:16:49. > :16:52.Vantroba with the second equaliser to make it 2`2. Bison took control
:16:53. > :16:56.in the third period, the comeback capped by Zac Sullivan with his
:16:57. > :16:59.first league goal. Guildford stay second after the weekend, Bison
:17:00. > :17:04.third, Milton Keynes and Swindon are just below them. On Friday night you
:17:05. > :17:08.may have seen us live at the launch of this year's Rallye sun`seeker. 83
:17:09. > :17:11.cars were tearing through the heathland between Bournemouth and
:17:12. > :17:15.Poole, many taking part in what was also the final round of the British
:17:16. > :17:19.Rally Championship. And it was the man who took Alexis for a spin last
:17:20. > :17:22.week, Jukka Korhonen, who won the title finishing third in the rally
:17:23. > :17:33.itself, which was won by Oshan Pryce. The champagne flowed on
:17:34. > :17:35.Saturday. London Irish rugby club scored nine tries for the second
:17:36. > :17:41.successive week. They continue their good start to the equivalent of
:17:42. > :17:46.football's Europa League. The club, who play home games at Reading's
:17:47. > :17:53.Stadium, beat their Portuguese opponents. 67`6 victory, well done
:17:54. > :17:55.to them. This week sees the European Disability Shooting Championships
:17:56. > :17:58.take place in Alicante in Spain. London 2012 double medallist Matt
:17:59. > :18:02.Skelhon goes into the contest as one of the favourites. The 28`year`old
:18:03. > :18:05.first started shooting at the 2006 Spinal Games in Stoke Mandeville
:18:06. > :18:11.before going on to win gold at the 2008 Paralympics in Beijing. He won
:18:12. > :18:14.a silver and a bronze at London 2012. Brennan Nicholls has been to
:18:15. > :18:27.see his final preparations. It is a sport where you do battle as
:18:28. > :18:30.much with yourself as others. Shooting requires supreme
:18:31. > :18:39.concentration, as well as an obvious steady hand. Matt Skelhon proved his
:18:40. > :18:44.when he won gold in 2008. When he's in his own, he's hard to beat. I am
:18:45. > :18:48.just worried about the way I am shooting, really. I'm not bothered
:18:49. > :18:52.who is shooting well. As long as I can shoot how I should in training,
:18:53. > :18:56.that is enough. My biggest enemies myself, keeping my head on the game.
:18:57. > :19:03.If I can do that, nobody is going to beat me at the moment. It took a
:19:04. > :19:06.world record to deny him gold at London 2012, but he secured a silver
:19:07. > :19:10.and bronze for Paralympics GB. Since London, the sport has changed the
:19:11. > :19:13.scoring system. Decimal points come into play and the final is a
:19:14. > :19:16.straight shoot off. But that hasn't stopped him setting new world
:19:17. > :19:23.records at the World Cup events in Stoke Mandeville and Turkey. Away
:19:24. > :19:26.from the range, he has been attracted to pass times which again
:19:27. > :19:32.require technique and technology. In the run`up to London 2012, it was
:19:33. > :19:37.remote`controlled helicopters. But fishing is his new hobby of choice.
:19:38. > :19:40.I've been doing it since I was little, my grandad took me years ago
:19:41. > :19:44.and I've been doing it ever since. It's nice and relaxing, a lot of
:19:45. > :19:49.places you can get down to the water 's edge, get your stuff out, it's
:19:50. > :19:55.nice and relaxing. Then there is a big adrenaline rush when you get a
:19:56. > :20:02.nice fish on the end. No time for that at the World Championships.
:20:03. > :20:06.Matt is keen to land one of disability shooting's biggest prizes
:20:07. > :20:10.on his road to the Paralympics in 2016.
:20:11. > :20:16.A very good shot. We wish him good luck with that. Coming up tomorrow,
:20:17. > :20:19.we have a Caribbean feel to the sport Former Hampshire and West
:20:20. > :20:23.Indies batting legend Gordon Greenidge is back in the region and
:20:24. > :20:26.he had a chat with me after opening a new study support centre at the
:20:27. > :20:29.Ageas Bowl, Hampshire are also marking Black History Month with a
:20:30. > :20:30.exhibition marking the contribution of some of their Caribbean talents
:20:31. > :20:42.who have played for the county. And what a contribution some of them
:20:43. > :20:47.have made. I met him when he was playing here, just at the end for
:20:48. > :20:55.Hampshire, about 87. Such a lovely man. What a batsmen. Quiet,
:20:56. > :21:00.really... He's not changed, he looks like he should still be out there.
:21:01. > :21:03.Shall we talk weather? We will have the full cast in a moment. But the
:21:04. > :21:06.weekend weather has been making the headlines. Residents on Hayling
:21:07. > :21:09.Island in Hampshire have been assessing the damage after a freak
:21:10. > :21:19.tornado struck there yesterday morning, affecting around 100 homes.
:21:20. > :21:23.This is the moment it struck. It caused an estimated ?100,000 worth
:21:24. > :21:27.of damage as it swept through the yard, leaving a trail of
:21:28. > :21:31.devastation. This footage shows how boats were thrown around and left
:21:32. > :21:37.badly damaged, with mast snapped off. It really was dreadful. It also
:21:38. > :21:42.uprooted trees, knocked over walls and four tiles from roofs. There is
:21:43. > :21:47.a fully, nobody was injured but a big clean`up was underway today.
:21:48. > :21:51.The clear and Patrick was continuing today on Hayling Island. About 100
:21:52. > :21:55.properties are believed to have been damaged. Local roofer Paul Croft has
:21:56. > :22:01.already worked on repairing many of them. Today about five, yesterday
:22:02. > :22:08.about six. We have had another three or four calls today. Quite busy. How
:22:09. > :22:11.badly damaged? It was mostly tiles flying off, hitting cars or
:22:12. > :22:15.next`door's windows. It's caused quite a bit of damage, namely this
:22:16. > :22:22.road and Blackthorn Drive on the end. Fairly localised? Yes. This was
:22:23. > :22:27.the scene yesterday. As well as damaged roofs, several trees were
:22:28. > :22:33.blown down, causing damage to houses and cars. It was just after 7am when
:22:34. > :22:38.it struck. We heard and felt this big, strong, howling wind. My
:22:39. > :22:44.husband described it as a ball of wind that came through the house.
:22:45. > :22:48.The house shock, like there was an earthquake. It felt like the roof
:22:49. > :22:54.was going to come through the house, the windows rattled and the
:22:55. > :23:00.roof rattled. Then it was gone in a blast. The seafront border brunt of
:23:01. > :23:05.the tornado hit. This beach hut had the roofs blown off. This one lost
:23:06. > :23:11.most of the felt. This one was blown from its base by the sheer force of
:23:12. > :23:14.the wind. The high wind also brought down trees elsewhere in the south,
:23:15. > :23:20.including in this garden in West Sussex. At Finchampstead, near
:23:21. > :23:25.Woking, lightning struck a house, causing serious damage. We heard an
:23:26. > :23:31.almighty bang, that sounded just like a bomb. It took a few seconds
:23:32. > :23:37.to sink in, what was it? We came out the front and we looked cross the
:23:38. > :23:41.road to see there was a massive hole in the roof of the property
:23:42. > :23:52.opposite. High wind continued to buffet part of the South today.
:23:53. > :23:56.Next, the threat of heavy rain. Quite frightening when something
